Back in 2016, the national tour of THE LION KING played a month-long engagement at the Durham Performing Arts Center in Durham, North Carolina. Prior to that, I was able to interview actor Ben Lipitz for BroadwayWorld by phone. At the time, he was in the show as Pumbaa, a part he played for more than 6,000 performances through both the tour and Broadway productions. Ben recently passed away on April 18th at the age of 58. So what I decided to do is share with all of you the aforementioned interview. I've also included a snippet from a conversation I had with the tour's head carpenter at the time, Billy Kimbley, as the show was loading into DPAC a few days before the run began. Ben Lipitz's previous stage credits included RED, HOT, AND BLUE (Goodspeed Opera, Papermill Playhouse); JUST SO (Goodspeed Opera); ART; DIRTY BLONDE; LAUGHTER ON THE 23RD FLOOR; A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM; Cleveland Playhouse, Kennedy Center, Walnut St. Theatre. TV: THE SOPRANOS, LAW & ORDER, 100 CENTRE ST., HOMICIDE. Film: THE GIRAFFE and FIND ME GUILTY (directed by Sidney Lumet). *I do not own any of the content used in this podcast. Today on Celebrating Simple Life the Podcast, I'm chatting with Susan Busse. Sure, it says ‘publicist' on her business card. But her real passion is being a storyteller. She works with great clients to trumpet their brands to the world. Susan has worked with all manner of musicians, artists, film companies, festivals, and businesses, to great success. Like the time music clients The North Sound were interviewed on CBC's q with Tom Power, when fine art artist Denyse Klette was interviewed during the pandemic on CBC's The National, when Belle Plaine covered the front page of Arts & Life in the Edmonton Journal, or when Carrie Catherine was featured as ‘Ms. Chatelaine' in Chatelaine magazine. Her clients have an impressive list of awards and nominations. The key to Susan's success is that she really does care about the people she is working with and their projects, becoming an invested partner. You feel that connection when she's looking you right in the eyes as you're explaining your next big idea to her. In what can sometimes be a cutthroat world, that ‘look you right in the eyes' collaboration is as rare gift. In fact, she won the 2017 Western Canadian Music Award for ‘Impact in Music Marketing'. Tune in as we chat all about sharing your brand, reaching for the stars and how anything is possible when you connect with others. The best products often come from a frustrated consumer.Laura Armstrong was an event planner who traveled a ton for work and struggled to find the right hair products to bring on the road. She couldn't lug all her tools and hair products around, and the only dry shampoos she could find came in aerosol cans, which were banned from carry-on and they turned your hair white. So, Laura created her own. Using ingredients you could find in your kitchen, Laura created her own formula and packaging for an all-natural, travel-friendly dry shampoo that matches your hair color. Almost 3 years in, Laura has expanded Dirty Blonde into a Hair and Skin Care brand that generates $5k a month in revenue — a solid side hustle on top of her day job as a marketing and event planner. In this episode, Laura takes us behind the scenes of her operations, sharing her process of developing an all-natural formula and her tips for new businesses — what to do before launching your product, how to manage your time with a side hustle, and how to make the most out of Instagram and Facebook ads for your business. Let us all say Solla Sollew because three-time Tony nominee Kevin Chamberlin swings by Shetler Studios to look back on a varied career that includes the Broadway productions of My Favorite Year, Seussical, Dirty Blonde, The Addams Family, Triumph of Love, Disaster, and the hit Disney television show Jessie. Kevin pulls back the curtain on his career to discuss how he was busted as a wee lad for bootlegging, what it was like creating the roles of Horton and Fester in two of high school's most produced musicals, and why he loves developing new works! Also, Kevin shines the spotlight on Nathan Lane, Ahrens and Flaherty, and Detective Beth Fowler! A big thanks to listener/brilliant artist Ray Kampf who set up this interview. It's rare when we have someone this big...this famous...and this cute appear live in the secret underground studio. This week we welcome gay porn superstar Brent Everett, his beautiful husband/manager Steve Pena, and BrentEverett.com exclusive model Ayden Cole to the show. Brent talks about his appearance at Washington, DC's Town Danceboutique last weekend which the Swish Edition co-sponsored (um, yeah, he and his boys put on a very hot stage show), how his douche bottle and video camera (with material too x-rated for XTube on it) were stolen from a Michigan hotel room, how he and Steve audition new guys for their website, why straight guys are more apt to bottom for a gay boy, and MUCH more. This conversation is not for the faint of heart. Oh, and we got him to play a round of "Who Would You Do," too. Also on this fun episode, we have a hot new single called, "Dirty Blonde" by a gorgeous California girl named Astraea. Plus, Lisa Lampanelli has a reality show pilot waiting for Logo's greenlight; NYC listener Edward runs in the Pride race with our logo on his (fine) chest; The redhead appreciation bar night craze comes to DC with Red Crush; Foam parties are coming back; The creator of The Brady Bunch and Gilligan's Island takes his last 3-hour tour; Scott does nasty things to his lunch box in a tree house; The Swishers announce their trip to L.A.; Win ANOTHER pair of tickets to Camp 2011 just by leaving us a silly message at 202-596-7769; The latest news from Sean at Metro Weekly; and, Much gay hilarity! Episode 142 is called "Brent in the House."
