Long, long before George Burns became the senior citizen movie star of films like "The Sunshine Boys" and "Oh God!" he was familiar to radio and television audiences across the country as the grounded half of the comedy couple Burns and Allen, with real-life wife (and vaudeville partner) Gracie Allen playing the ditzy dame of the duo. Theirs was a 25-year run on the airwaves, and now for Project Audion, Pete Lutz has penned a fresh new Burns and Allen script that recalls the best of their radio work during World War II, right down to their sponsor of the time, Swan Soap. Much like Bob Hope and Jack Benny did, we find the two of them at a naval base entertaining the troops, along with guest stars Henry Fonda and Chico Marx. You'll be entertained by Audion's transcribed-live transcontinental cast of delicious, delirious vocal talents: John Bell (as George) in Alabama Mel Rose (as Gracie) in Pennsylvania Dana Gonsalves (as Bill Goodwin) in Texas Les Marsden (as Chico Marx) in California Scott R. McKinley (as Henry Fonda) in New Jersey Pete Lutz (as Mel Blanc as PO2 Ferguson) in Texas Robert L. Mills (as Adm. Tarbottom) in California Larry Groebe supervised the production. Hi friends, today we showcase -Turning Point 1977- Shirley MacLaine and Anne Bancroft star here, with some big help from rad defector Mikhail Baryshnikov, Tom Skerritt, Martha Scott Marshall Thompson, and James Mitchell too. The mad scientist that makes evil robot Kiss members in Kiss meets the Phantom of the park pops in for a bit, dressed like Tom Skerritt's character, and it got confusing for a hot second. I think it was to show that Shirley's Character had a type, but it was nice to see the Kiss guy. Director here is Herbert Ross, naming a few we got, Boys on the side, steel Magnolias, Footloose, max Dugan Returns, and for us it's The goodbye girl, the Seven percent solution, the sunshine boys, the Last of Shelia, T.R. Baskin, and the Owl and the pussycat 1970, We will be showcasing him again with the Sunshine Boys 1975. Our writer here is Arthur Laurents, who is absolutely amazing, and wrote quite a lot of tell all stories about his life in Hollywood. He wrote it all after he came out of the closet so it gets deep and a lil hot too. Arthur was a gay Jewish, once blacklisted writer, so it was too much to be contained in just 1 book.He was born in 1917-and lived for 93 years. He wrote the coded Rope 1948, Home of the brave, West side story, Gypsy, and we reviewed him before in 1973's The Way we were. Quite happy to showcase this film for y'all, it's been a minute since we have showcased something. Lots to say soooooooo, why not press play. Fun sentence to write, but I'm sure many of us read while listening, whatever your process, thanks for listening.

TVC 646.5: Part 2 of a conversation that began last week with five-time Emmy Award-winning writer, producer, and cultural critic John Barbour (Real People) and Carol Hoenig, the collaborator on John's memoir, Your Mother's Not a Virgin. Carol's latest book, The Greatest Reviews I've Ever Read, is a collection of some of John's many film reviews for Los Angeles magazine and KNBC-TV Los Angeles from the 1970s that also includes an ongoing, My Dinner with Andre-like conversation between John and Carol about how movies continue to shape and influence our culture. Topics this segment include why most movie adaptations of stage musicals do not succeed at the box office; how Neil Simon became one of John's staunchest allies, even after John had panned the movie version of The Sunshine Boys; and why Deep Throat was the most difficult movie that John ever had to review. It was a year of political assassinations, unpopular wars, and global protests. Luckily, we can relive 1968 through movies alone. This week, Jake Ziegler recommended that Brad Garoon watch the Producers, the first of Mel Brooks' 11 feature films. After getting over how embarrassing it was for Brad to have not seen the film already, they talk about Gene Wilder and Zero Mostel's brilliant comedic performances, the legacy of character actor Kenneth Marz, and the allure of Lee Meredith. Things turn to the fantastic as Brad recommends Planet of the Apes for Jake, and Jake doesn't like it. They talk about the film's surprising courtroom setting, the bizarre plotting, the movie's important place in science fiction history, and the long-running Planet of the Apes franchise as a whole. Other movies mentioned in this episode: New Faces of 1937 (1937), The Great Dictator (1940), Rodan (1956), The Fortune Cookie (1966), Once Upon a Time in the West (1968), Romeo and Juliet (1968), Who's That Knocking at My Door (1968), 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), Barbarella (1968), Blackbeard's Ghost (1968), Night of the Living Dead (1968), Rosemary's Baby (1968), Hot Millions (1968), The Odd Couple (1968), The Twelve Chairs (1970), What's Up, Doc (1972), The Sunshine Boys (1975), Planet of the Apes (2001), The Producers (2005), Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011), Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014), War for the Planet of the Apes (2017), Jojo Rabbit (2019), Albert Brooks: Defending My Life (2023).

Sunshine Boys 2.0 kick of the 9 o'clock hour with calls and College Basketball news.
According to her recently published book, I Quit Everything, Freda Love Smith quit everything. But she does still talk, and we can prove it. And when she did do stuff, she played drums with The Blake Babies, Juliana Hatfield, Antenna, Gentleman Caller, Sunshine Boys, and Mysteries of Life among other 90s darlings. She wrote Red Velvet Underground, a cookbook/ memoir. However, once again we have no interest in lingering on our guest's remarkable accomplishments but prefer to bring out the worst in them. So get ready to hear about Ricky's Cantina, robotripping, and roughing up a local celebrity. PS The related articles on Freda's Wikipedia page are “Erzulie, Family of Voodoo spirits,” “Felix da Housecat, American DJ and record producer,” and “Debra L. Shapiro, American scholar.” BIG NEWS: WE HAVE MERCH! Designed by Chris Mott and sponsored by badknees. Check it out! Before you say goodnight, Gracie, listen to my decades-old interview straight from the vault with comedy legend George Burns. The conversation was recorded in December of 1985, back when Burns was about to turn 90 and I was a rookie writer with the Canadian edition of TV Guide magazine. The audio was recorded 37 years ago on a Sony cassette tape I've kept among dozens of others dating back to my days at the magazine. I spoke with Burns and his manager, Irving Fein, at the comedians office on a studio lot in Hollywood. We talk about his incredible career spanning vaudeville, radio, television and film, including his nearly 40 year marriage and comedy team partnership with Gracie Allen. He also talks about "these comedy kids today" (Billy Crystal, Bill Cosby, etc) and his Oscar win at 80 for "The Sunshine Boys." He also shares memories of vaudeville pals such as Harpo Marx, hints on diet and exercise (he lived to be 100) and why he only smoked cheap cigars on-stage and off-.Travel back in time and listen to a true Hollywood legend -- as well as George Burns. Out of the vault now at brioux.tv.

Drummer Freda Love Smith recently hung up her sticks after a long career playing in bands from Blake Babies to Antenna, Mysteries of Life and the Sunshine Boys. She also wrote Red Velvet Underground, a perfectly titled memoir that covers her rock ‘n' roll life and her passion for cooking. Here she reflects on growing up in Bloomington, Indiana, and teaming up with John Strohm and, later in Boston, Juliana Hatfield to form Blake Babies. How did Allen Ginsberg come to name the band? Why didn't that band last, and how did she feel about Hatfield's solo success? What supernatural force named Antenna? How hard was the decision to retire? What's she writing now? And why are rock ‘n' food so entwined?

Enjoy two free comedy episodes of The Burns & Allen Show w/ George Burns & Gracie Allen A) 3/7/44 w/ guest, Alan Ladd B) 2/1/50 w/ guest, Al Jolson George Burns and Gracie Allen – a real-life married couple – performed a comedy routine with Gracie as the funny woman and George as the straight man. Millions of radio listeners truly believed Gracie was as dumb as she sounded which was a tribute to both her comic brilliance and the top-notch scripts. For two decades the duo had a weekly following on radio, which culminated with a decade-long television show. George and Gracie continually revised their act, moving from vaudeville crossfire to full-stage situation comedy. At first, their characters were not romantically linked. In 1936, Gracie decided to help educate singer Tony Martin about the opposite sex by flirting with him. Actor Paul Douglas, then an announcer, was also on the receiving end of Gracie's affections in 1938. It was only later that George's character began pursuing Gracie. By 1942, Gracie's flirtations with other men had been shelved and the program evolved into a husband and wife situation comedy series with occasional guest stars. Ever the businessman, George Burns (and wife Gracie) left NBC and signed a lucrative contract with CBS that included television. Gracie was hesitant about TV at first but quickly discovered that she was a pro in front of the camera. On TV, George would often break the fourth wall and speak directly to the audience while Gracie continued to play dumb. In 1958, after eight years on television, Gracie retired and after her passing, George kept himself busy by acting in films. He earned an Oscar for his role in The Sunshine Boys and starred as “God” alongside John Denver in the Oh, God! films.
Freda Love Smith is retiring. She's an indie-rock icon who's been in more bands than you've had hot meals. Her first band —the fabled Blake Babies— helped define the late ‘80s/early ‘90s Boston music scene. Her tight, multi-faceted style of drumming evokes everyone from Moe Tucker to Ringo Starr. But that part of her life is about to end in a little over a month when —due to a variety of reasons— she'll pick up her sticks for the final time when she performs at the long running Hot Stove Cool Music benefit at the Metro. At least that's what SHE says. Time will tell. Regardless — she'll always be cool. On this episode we talk to Freda about “Breaking Away”, moving to Boston, the first time she quit music, macrobiotic cults, Mysteries Of Life, living in a hobbit hole, Some Girls, her foodie/rock memoir “Red Velvet Underground”, her forthcoming book about Angela Atwood, Scott yammers on about “Network”, Jane Pauley, Sunshine Boys, and Freda is retiring.
Greetings, fellow listeners. What is definitely my personal favorite episode of the entire podcast, my Mom and I have such a wonderful in-depth conversation with the twenty-first guest of the podcast who really means a lot to me: my 90 year-old bowling teammate Jim Carpenter. Recorded on the voice memo app on my phone in the comfort of his own house (Notice the upbeat swinging jazz music in the background), this hour and a half-long chitchat is filled with loads of amazing topics that range from Jim's previous lives as a cabinet designer and professional golf player for over six decades, to hearing is breathtaking singing skills from being a baritone opera singer for sixty years, the thrills of bowling and still killing it at 90 years of age, celebrating his 90th birthday with the entire bowling league, and discussing his massive heart attack that followed with his tedious physical rehabilitation process and his miraculous road to recovery. Believe it or not, this man has become a really big deal to my life in just a short period of three months.

Sessions from Studio A - Sunshine Boys (December 9, 2021)
The good ship (*both laugh*) keeps sailing along with our 48th episode, and it features one of our only repeat guests to date. He's the owner of one of my favorite voices in the pantheon of punk rock, and he's also one of my favorite songwriters and one of, in my opinion, the most underrated guitar players in the scene. A triple threat! Anyway, he's the inimitable Josh Caterer, and if you remember back at the beginning of 2021, we chatted about what was to be his first solo release, The Hideout Sessions. It was an album recorded in front of a live stream online audience at an otherwise empty club in Chicago, and it marked the first real appearance of any sort by this particular project, which featured Caterer on guitar and vocals, John Perrin on drums and John San Juan on bass. To mark the release of that album this spring, the band played an album release show, but because all of the clubs were still closed to the public, they did it via live stream and recorded it as an album...AGAIN! If you're keeping score at home, that makes not one but TWO live albums recorded before actually playing a show in front of an in-person, human audience. The result of that latter show is The SPACE Sessions, due out next week (December 17th) on Pravda Records. It was recorded at - you guessed it - at SPACE in Evanston, Illinois, and like The Hideout Sessions, it features an interesting mix of songs from Caterer's catalog (via Smoking Popes and, yes, Duvall!!!) and some standards that you might otherwise think of as from the big band era, because they were popularized by the likes of Judy Garland and Sammy Davis Jr. and Elvis Presley and, in the case of "At Last," which happens to be my wedding song...Etta James. The set also closes with Caterer being joined on vocals by his daughter, Phoebe, for an updated take on "Somethin' Stupid," popularized by Frank Sinatra and his own daughter, Nancy. If been even tangentially aware of the punk scene over the course of the last three decades, you're of course aware of a legion of bands that have covered songs from outside the typical punk rock milieu, but they've done them with a fair amount of tongue planted firmly in cheek, as in "oh, isn't it funny/ironic that we're playing this song this way!" Sometimes it works great and sometimes it's a gag that tires after the first few listens, much like a comedy album. What's different about the old standards that Caterer et al., take on is the appreciation that the band has for the source material, paying considerable homage in their modern retellings. Anyway, I'm rambling (I know, right?)...if you liked The Hideout Sessions, you'll love the SPACE Sessions. I'll add pre-order links when they're available (it'll be available digitally and on CD next weekend but the vinyl will have to wait until...who knows, honestly. Friggin' Adele...). Catch the Josh Caterer Trio (along with the Sunshine Boys) live and in person: December 16th at SPACE in Evanston, IL December 17th at The Lyric Room in Green Bay, WI December 18th at the Back Room at Colectivo in Milwaukee, WI https://joshcaterer.bandcamp.com/music https://sunshineboys.net/ https://www.pravdamusic.com/ (*both laughs*) theme song is an excerpt from [laughs] track "Hurts To Laugh." © KALI MASI 2021 ℗ Take This To Heart Records 2021

The World According To Yoni starts its second year with a BANG, as Yoni has the pleasure of interviewing the Number One "GET" on his list of most-desired guests, two-time Tony Award nominee, Lewis J. Stadlen. In part one, of this two-part interview, Yoni — who considers Lewis his acting hero — and Mr. Stadlen cover everything from what it's like growing up in a theatrical family, to the teachers they've loved and...not loved so much. From there it's on to the start of Lewis's career, in the first National Touring Company of Fiddler On the Roof, to his Broadway debut as Groucho Marx in the musical, Minnie's Boys, and on to the original Broadway casts of Neil Simon's The Sunshine Boys, and his brilliant, Tony-nominated performance as Best Actor In A Musical, for Hal Prince's 1974 revival of Leonard Bernstein's Candide. They also discuss Lewis's friendship, and close working relationship with Nathan Lane and director Jerry Zaks. There's even a surprise clip later in the show — demonstrating Lewis's comedic brilliance. This is one show you definitely do not want to miss.
Apologies for the audio kinks you will hear throughout this episode.. it was sadly unavoidable due to a technical glitch with the recording software and could not be fixed in post production :( Anyhow...... We are back on the retrospective with yet another side-step outside the core filmography.. today we have ANOTHER re-adaptation of a play / movie that woody DID NOT write or direct... _____________ SPECIAL THANKS to The Woody Allen Pages & The Woody Allen Subreddit http://www.woodyallenpages.com https://www.reddit.com/r/woodyallen/ http://woodyallen.site / @simeon_rad @dontyro
Richard Klein and Jerry Adler are veteran actors and directors on stage, television, and film. You might know Klein as Dallas on Three's Company, and Adler as "Hesh" on The Sopranos. On this show, they'll visit the WNPR studios to tell their stories, and reminisce with Colin about his years as Ed the Handyman on Charles In Charge. That's not true, Colin wasn't in Charles In Charge, but we'll explore the nuances of theater acting, the history of their time on television, and get a sneak peek at their latest work together, "The Sunshine Boys" at the Jorgensen Theater at UConn.Support the show: http://www.wnpr.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
