The best operating models for design orgs are mission-driven, evolving, and team-developed. Those criteria might seem daunting, but Daniel Orbach, Lou's guest and a speaker at September's DesignOps Summit, explains how he facilitates a dynamic culture of co-creating with his team at JP Morgan Chase. Daniel outlines his framework, one where the whole team is involved. It's a dynamic, fluid process that builds teamwork, creates buy-in, and establishes a framework of periodic review, which encourages continual evolution. Lou and Daniel discuss the impact of rituals and mission statements on both teams and individuals. They also explore the impact of a team's operating models on the broader organization and how interactions with various teams can foster shared understanding within the broader context of the organization. “I would love for the psychoanalytic world to re-embrace some of these adjunctive treatments that get to non-ordinary states of consciousness in order to enhance psychoanalytic treatment, and that includes psychedelics. The other thing I'd like to see is, I think psychoanalysts are extremely well suited to use psychedelic-assisted therapy in a non-harmful way. I really believe that without an ongoing treatment relationship that these medicines are not going to be quick fixes. There's an article in the Substack blog, Ecstatic Integration, about an Israeli man who had an MDMA treatment for chronic post-traumatic stress disorder and it's a very interesting read, and it really does speak to the crucial aspect of having an ongoing therapy relationship while we use these medicines. I want people who are in the analytic field who are trained right out of the box to provide these containers to be more involved in the psychedelic field. For the psychedelic field I think sometimes I wish they would be a little more humble, a little less zealous about the efficacy, and a little more concerned about what could happen that's harmful. I also think the psychedelic field, for some reason, has not embraced psychoanalysis as a major tool to enhance the medicine." Episode Description: Charis begins by discussing her inspiration, attributed to Maimonides, for always seeking new understandings to enhance her care of patients. We also begin with a caution - any time we introduce a frame change in clinical work, we must carefully attend to our countertransference to determine the factors that are contributing to our actions. That said, we should be careful to not use our carefulness to rationalize inhibitions to thinking and acting creatively. Charis describes her thinking underlying her decision to introduce ketamine with a particular patient as well as the process of the ongoing psychotherapy. We discuss the practical aspects of this procedure, the risks, the changes in the patient, and the importance of an ongoing psychotherapy to serve as a productive holding and processing space for this work. She concludes with her recommendation to the analytic world to be more open to such adjunctive approaches to therapy and to the psychedelic world to be more modest in their assumptions of its healing ability. Swag.com founders Jeremy Parker and Josh Orbach are two millennials who got their start selling T-shirts, had an assist from Mark Cuban (of all people) and decided that the future of the promo industry was online. Then, like the down-to-their-DNA entrepreneurs they are, they looked at how things were done and knew they could find a way to make it better. More than doubling their sales from 2020 to $30 million so far this year, Parker and Orbach may have cracked the code to promo's future success.

Our discussion includes the connections of proto-Evangelicals's theology and lynching, what it means to hide behind theological ideology and why Donald Trump's election was not out of character for religious Americans. Casey and Dr. Bulter also discuss the connections between Billy Graham's anti-communism and Evangelical push-back to civil rights and collective guilt that still goes on today (c.f. Lucas Kwong is a professor at CUNY and author of Against Christian Xenophobia, an open letter with 700+ signatories to date. Lucas has been running a campaign since the beginning of 2021 contacting political and religious leaders who peddle in Anti-Asian rhetoric. Particularly after the Atlanta Spa Massacre in March of this year and the resurgence of the largely conspiratorial lab-leak theories, politicians hiding behind the mantle of Christianity from Ted Cruz to Marsha Blackburn and Paul Gosar have helped to reignited a yellow peril for our time. Lucas is hard at work educating us all and inviting us to join with him in his prophetic work. Based on extensive surveys with 20,000 women the book explores the causes of the 47% orgasm gap between men and women. Sheila and her team analyzed the messages of best selling Evangelical books on marriage and sexuality, to dig down into the harmful effects of hearing and believing nonsense like Every Man's Battle and Love and Respect in the lives. Along the way Sheila discusses the need for Christian teaching to center around men figuring out what the clitoris is and Casey asks Sheila how it became common to sanctify being an asshole, we discuss much better resources for understanding sexuality and marriage and how the Evangelical obsession with static gender roles protects those with power....because every conversation has both political and theological consequences, particularly when we talk about sex! Both authors share how they came to this work as well as the faith traditions (Jewish and Catholic) that brought them to care for the poor in a material way. We also discuss what it truly means to be on the side of the poor and marginalized (hint: it has much more to do with material restructuring than it does performative gesticulations or interpersonal anti-racist measures) and the fact that Barbara Lee is the real deal (for just one proof of this fact, watch this video right after 9/11, when she stands alone in the House of Representatives - not even Bernie got this one right - and defends her sole vote against Bush's AUMF)! Chris Nelson joins Casey for a second time. Chris found out that a private mega-prison was set to be built right around the corner from his childhood home and he got busy hounding small-town Alabama council meetings,, canvassing neighborhoods and spending every spare moment fighting against the state and corporate powers that be. Thanks to Chris' efforts and that of numerous other activists and community groups, popular sentiment forced large banks to pull out of this insanely immoral investment opportunity. Chris shares valuable lessons learned, what to look out for in the next (zombie) phase of Gov. Kay Ivey's mega-prison plan and the unglamorous work of showing up where injustice is being done. While this focuses on super-local Alabama politics Chris' story highlights the need for all of us to bring what we have to the fight for justice. ***Like the show?
