CINEMA! E ANCORA CINEMA!

The Irish Aviation Authority, has launched the 'Drone Safely This Christmas' Campaign, supported by Drone Innovation Partnership and Dublin City Council. If you're thinking of getting a drone this Christmas, you need to make sure you register as an Operator on the IAA website and that you know the rules before you fly. This advice comes ahead of the busiest shopping days in the lead up to Christmas. Drone use is on the rise and the number of drones and operators registered in Ireland has risen exponentially over past number of years. Safety is paramount, and so since 2021, the IAA has registered over 8,000 drone operators and trained over 21,500 drone pilots. This year has seen a 24% increase in the number of pilots trained. Consumers who own a drone that is over 250gr or has a camera, are legally required to register as a drone operator. If you are a drone operator, drone safety is your responsibility. You need to ensure you are always in control of the drone and that you remain compliant with the law. Jim Gavin, Chief Operations Officer of the Irish Aviation Authority commenting on drone safety said: "Drone use has increased significantly in recent years. Piloting a drone is fun but it comes with responsibility to fly it safely while respecting people's privacy. Remember a drone is not a toy and can have very serious consequences if it collides with a person, an animal or another aircraft. So, if you do get a drone this Christmas, remember it's your responsibility to know the rules and fly it safely." Veronica Mariti Sesoko, Drone Innovation Partnership (DIP) Engagement Lead added: "As drones top Christmas wish lists, it's crucial to remember they are not toys. Fly responsibly by checking current regulations and following safe practices. The Drone Innovation Partnership (DIP), a collaboration between the Irish Aviation Authority, Dublin City Council, and Maynooth University, is working to ensure drones enhance public services and support emergency responses while keeping our skies safe through active stakeholder engagement, including citizens." "Thankfully the vast majority of drone users are compliant with the regulations. However, we are concerned, with the rapid growth of drone usage, that not all new pilots may be aware of their responsibilities which can lead to unsafe flying. If you see anyone not complying with the regulations, we encourage people to contact the IAA. Reckless use of a drone or inappropriate use of a drone camera may result in prosecution," Enda Walsh, UAS Manager/Drones Manager from the Irish Aviation Authority added. For more information on IAA Drone Safety Regulations and registration process, visit www.iaa.ie/drones.

A two-year in-depth study to help prepare Dublin and other European cities for the widespread use of drones in commercial and civic life has been launched at the offices of Dublin City Council by the Minister of State at the Department of Transport and the Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications, James Lawless T.D. The project is led by a research team from Lero, the Research Ireland Centre for Software and Maynooth University in collaboration with Dublin City Council (DCC), and the Irish Aviation Authority (IAA). Speaking at the launch, Minister Lawless said: "Ireland has an established record of leadership in regulation of emerging technologies. As drones begin to be used more and more across the globe, at home, we have seen them supplying emergency medicines, delivering fast food, used for search and rescue purposes and to enhance public safety, among a range of important applications. Earlier this year, the Government held a public consultation on the development of a policy framework for Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), commonly referred to as drones. The research partnership being launched today between Lero, Maynooth University, Dublin City Council and the Irish Aviation Authority, with stakeholder engagement at its heart, is very much aligned with the Government's efforts to foster the industry's growth while mitigating safety, security, environmental, privacy, and other concerns." Welcoming the announcement, Dr Ciarán Seoighe, Deputy CEO of Taighde Éireann - Research Ireland, the newly established research and innovation funding agency, said: "Research Ireland supports partnerships such as this to bring key stakeholders together to drive progress and capitalise on the advantages offered by innovative and disruptive technologies. While exploring emerging technologies and systems to capture data and support responses to critical events, this collaborative approach helps us to better understand its potential benefits and impact on wider society. Investing in basic research is of strategic importance to Research Ireland, as it allows us to support a pipeline of transformative solutions to bring about real-world benefits." Project Coordinator Professor Tim McCarthy of Maynooth University and LERO believes the project is particularly timely as unmanned drone ecosystems are beginning to emerge globally and involve a wide variety of stakeholders and end-users. A vital aspect of the research project, according to Prof. McCarthy, will be the creation of a digital twin for Dublin City to explore and simulate urban drone flight ecosystems, allowing researchers to address issues that emerge in a safe and controlled environment. "This digital twin will capture inputs from all stakeholders, enable simulation of drone activities and provide prototype digital optimisation services in addressing various business, market, safety, privacy, nuisance and environmental concerns," he added. The partnership will also deliver a number of 'state of the art' drone applications to show the benefits of autonomous and remote piloting of drones to support life-saving and emergency response applications in a Dublin City setting. "This unique drone innovation partnership will contribute to Dublin City Council's Drone and Urban Air Mobility Strategy 2024-2029, an ambitious roadmap to support the integration of drones into city services and position Dublin and Ireland as a European leader in Drones and Urban Air Mobility," said Jamie Cudden, Smart City Lead Dublin City Council. Enda Walsh, manager of the IAA's UAS division, believes the partnership will deliver crucial insights for safely integrating UAS into urban environments while maximising benefits to society and laying the foundation for developing UAS Traffic Management (UTM) for the State. "The Drone Innovation Partnership project will look at stakeholder concerns and provide crucial information and analysis of the key aspects around security, environment, and privacy for UA...

Cillian Murphy has received global acclaim for his performance in the title role of Christopher Nolan's epic film Oppenheimer. He has been nominated for an Oscar, which follows the best actor award he picked up at this year's Golden Globes. On the small screen he played the Birmingham gangster Thomas Shelby for a decade in the BAFTA-winning Peaky Blinders, which made him a household name. Cillian was born in Cork in 1976 and initially music was his creative outlet. His band Sons of Mr Green Genes, which he formed with his younger brother, was offered a five album record deal, but the boys' parents thought his brother was too young and vetoed a career in music.Cillian changed tack and in 1996 was cast as Pig in Enda Walsh's play Disco Pigs, reprising the role in a film version in 2001. His breakthrough film role came playing Jim the bicycle courier in Danny Boyle's 28 Days Later in 2002 which he followed up with a starring role in Ken Loach's the Wind that Shakes the Barley. In 2005 he played Dr Jonathan Crane - Scarecrow - in Christopher Nolan's film Batman Begins, which was the start of their continuing creative collaboration.Cillian lives in Ireland with his wife, the artist Yvonne McGuinness, and their two sons. In which the Mister and Monsters join me in reviewing THE HOUSE (2022), currently streaming on Netflix. The film, told in three parts but focusing around a house is directed by Emma De Swaef and Marc James Roels (segment "I: And Heard Within a Lie Is Spun"); Niki Lindroth von Bahr (segment "II: Then Lost Is Truth That Can't Be Won") and Paloma Baeza (segment "III: Listen Again and Seek the Sun"). Screenplay credit goes to Enda Walsh and story credit is attributed to Johannes Nyholm. Each story is delightfully creepy and the stop motion animation is beautiful. This will not be for everyone but we definitely think it's worth a watch so check it out. The film has a run time of 1 h 37 m and is rated TV-MA. Please note there are SPOILERS in this review.
It has been said before, but this episode was largely off the rails, at least in the beginning and at the end, in the middle, we did actually talk about this....movie? Yeah, it's a movie. Even though IMDb says it's a series but Netflix plays it consecutively so it's a movie. It is Jacob's pick and the graphic designer and a friend of the podcast gave Jacob this week's pick and boy oh boy, we did not enjoy it. But we did have fun with it. This movie was directed by Emma De Swaif, Marc James Roels, Niki Lindroth von Bahr, and Paloma Baeza and was written by Enda Walsh.

Siobhan McSweeney plays one of the best small screen characters at the moment, Sister Michael, and just took part in #DearIreland, a massive and innovative project to keep the Abbey Theatre in our lives. The Abbey commissioned writers like Enda Walsh, Sonya Kelly and Stacey Gregg, to write five- to 10-minute monologues. Each script is performed and filmed by 50 actors, often at home including Brendan Gleeson, Nicola Coughlan, Seána Kerslake and Siobhan McSweeney. The piece performed by Siobhan McSweeney recalled the famous city character, Katty Barry - a famous Cork character who owned and ran a shebeen on Dalton's Avenue near the Coal Quay. In the performance, Siobhan played Katty as she might be today - she died in 1982 - and how she would be coping with the current pandemic. Watch her performance here: Katty became so famous that she had a verse composed in her honour in the famous Cork anthem, The Boys of Fairhill. Alison and Siobhan also caught up on season three of Derry Girls and how Siobhan's getting on in lockdown in London. Listen back by pressing the play button at the top of the screen. Weekend Breakfast with Alison Curtis, Saturdays and Sundays from 8am!

Blackwell's Broad Street was thrilled to be joined by author of the best-selling Grief is the Thing with Feathers, Max Porter. Max was in conversation with fellow author, Ali Shaw, discussing his latest book, Lanny. There is a village outside London, no different from many others. Everyday lives conjure a tapestry of fabulism and domesticity. This village belongs to the people who live in it and to the people who lived in it hundreds of years ago. It belongs to England's mysterious past and its confounding present. But it also belongs to Dead Papa Toothwort who has woken from his slumber and is listening, and watching. He is watching Mad Pete the village artist. He is listening to ancient Peggy gossiping at her gate, to families recently moved here and to families dead for generations. Dead Papa Toothwort hears them all as he searches, intently, for his favourite. Looking for the boy. Lanny. ‘It’s hard to express how much I loved Lanny. Books this good don’t come along very often. It’s a novel like no other, an exhilarating, disquieting, joyous read. It will reach into your chest and take hold of your heart. It’s a novel to press into the hands of everyone you know and say, read this.’ MAGGIE O’FARRELL ‘The writing is stunning and deeply affecting. The plot thunders along. This is a book that resolutely refuses to be categorised but to get somewhere close, think: Under Milk Wood meets Broadchurch.’ NATHAN FILER ‘It takes a special kind of genius to create something which is both so strange and yet so compulsive.’ MARK HADDON Max Porter’s first novel, Grief Is the Thing with Feathers won the Sunday Times/Peter, Fraser + Dunlop Young Writer of the Year, the International Dylan Thomas Prize, the Europese Literatuurprijs and the BAMB Readers’ Award and was shortlisted for the Guardian First Book Award and the Goldsmiths Prize. It has been sold in twenty-nine territories. Complicité and Wayward’s production of Grief Is the Thing with Feathers directed by Enda Walsh and starring Cillian Murphy opened in Dublin in March 2018. Max lives in Bath with his family. Ali Shaw is the author of The Trees, The Man who Rained and The Girl with Glass Feet, which won the Desmond Elliott Prize for first novels. He grew up in Dorset and studied English Literature and Creative Writing at Lancaster University. He has worked as a bookseller and at Oxford’s Bodleian Library. He lives with his wife and two-year-old daughter. For our return to our regular studio after a summer of live recordings (and 1 lost one featuring Enda Walsh - if a live podcast isn't recorded, then it's just a conversation right?), we are joined by radio presenter (Today FM / TXFM) and DJ Claire Beck to discuss angry swans, shushing at gigs, scaldy tunes, dressing for Halloween, how everyone loves Ed Sheeran and Claire tells us about a song that follows her around the place. Bryan Cranston played a hapless dad in Malcom in the Middle, a dentist to the stars in Seinfeld, and most famously a teacher-turned-drugs-lord in Breaking Bad. Now he has written an autobiography. Cranston discusses A Life in Parts which recalls the many odd parts he's played in real life - paperboy, security guard, dating consultant, murder suspect, husband, father and, of course, actor. One of the last projects David Bowie worked on was his musical Lazarus which includes new music and some of his best-known hits. The production which broke box office records when it played in New York has now transferred to a specially-built venue in London. We speak to Enda Walsh, Bowie's co-writer on the project, and the show's director Ivo van Hove about bringing Bowie's vision to life. Paul Beatty has become the first US author to win the Man Booker Prize, with his racial satire The Sellout. It marks the second win in a row for independent publisher Oneworld who also published last year's winner, A Brief History of Seven Killings by Marlon James. So what is their secret? How do they talent spot the authors who go on to win big? We will hear from one of the founders, Juliet Mabey. We remember theatre director Howard Davies whose death at the age of 71 was announced today. During his long career he won three Best Director Olivier Awards, and established and ran the Warehouse Theatre for the Royal Shakespeare Company, now the Donmar Warehouse in London. He also did much work for the Royal National Theatre, where he directed 36 productions. Former NT artistic director Nicholas Hytner recalls working with him there, and Matt Wolf, theatre critic for The International New York Times, assesses his work.Presenter: John Wilson Producer: Angie Nehring.
Enda Walsh has been writing plays for over twenty years. He was born in Ireland, and grew up with a dad who liked to role-play and a mom who was an actor. He didn’t want to write plays at first. He thought he might be in a band, or make movies. Instead he went to Cork in 1993 and started working with a theatre company. Since then, he’s written seventeen theatre plays, two radio plays, three screenplays, the script for a musical and one for an opera! Most of his plays and scripts are adult stories, about very serious adult topics. But he’s also written a theatre play of Roald Dahl’s The Twits and has been working on a movie version of Island of the Aunts (also called Monster Mission), by Eva Ibbotson. For Mr. Walsh, storytelling is part of his nature. “Irish people tell stories,” he said in an interview with the City University of New York television station. “That’s it!”
Enda Walsh, one of Ireland's best-loved contemporary playwrights, pops in to talk about the unexpected new form his contemporary opera, The Last Hotel, has taken: the critically acclaimed dark drama has been filmed and will be televised next week on Sky Arts. Also in studio is Phil Edgar-Jones, Director of Sky Arts, talking about the challenges of commercial arts television programming. In part two: for most a nightmare in glass and concrete, Hawkins House, familiar to anyone familiar with Dublin city centre, won't be missed when it is demolished. But what about the other brutal 'concrete monstrosities' between Pearse Street and the Liffey's south bank? Hugh takes a stroll with architectural historian Dr Ellen Rowley to see if they can be rehabilitated.
