This week on “Jesuitical,” Zac and Ashley are thrilled to speak with their friend and colleague Father James Martin about his new podcast, “The Spiritual Life with Fr. James Martin, S.J.,” which launched this week. We then share Jim's conversation with actor and comedian Whoopi Goldberg. Whoopi is known for playing a larger-than-life nun in “Sister Act,” but did you know she was also raised Catholic and educated by nuns until the eighth grade? Jim and Whoopi talk about her struggles with organized religion, the importance of laughter in a life of faith and her bold request to Pope Francis when they met in 2024. RNIB Connect Radio's Toby Davey is joined again by Vidar Hjardeng MBE, Inclusion and Diversity Consultant for ITV News across England, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Channel Islands for the next of his regular audio described theatre reviews for 2025. This week Vidar was reviewing the musical ‘Marie & Rosetta' at the Wolverhampton Grand Theatre which tells the story of the pairing of Sister Rosetta Tharpe and Marie Knight, one of the most remarkable and revolutionary duos in music history with description by professional Audio Describer Sue Reading. About ‘Marie & Rosetta'   Sister Rosetta Tharpe, the roof-raising ‘godmother of rock ‘n' roll', influenced countless musicians from Elvis to Johnny Cash. This sparkling, intimate portrait of Rosetta and her beloved singing partner, Marie Knight, restores these forgotten musical heroines to the spotlight as one of the most remarkable and revolutionary duos in music history. Mississippi, 1946. Sister Rosetta has changed the face of gospel music with her exuberant, electric guitar-playing style. Shunned by strait-laced church folk for performing in nightclubs and glorying in rhythm and blues, she's persuaded the saintly young singer Marie to join her on a tour of the segregated southern States. But first she has to convert Marie's pure Sunday sound into something that has just a little more swing… Written by George Brant & Directed by Monique Touko Sister Rosetta Tharpe, the roof-raising ‘godmother of rock ‘n' roll', influenced countless musicians from Elvis to Johnny Cash. This sparkling, intimate portrait of Rosetta and her beloved singing partner, Marie Knight, restores these forgotten musical heroines to the spotlight as one of the most remarkable and revolutionary duos in music history. Featuring a wealth of joyous rock and gospel hits including Didn't It Rain and Peace in the Valley, the show will feature live musicians accompanying Olivier Award-winning West End star Beverley Knight (Memphis, The Drifters Girl, Sylvia, Sister Act) as Rosetta Tharpe. Joining Beverley Knight is Ntombizodwa Ndlovu (Cat On a Hot Tin Roof, The Space Between Us, Mixtape, Nothing, and The Mountain Top – Royal Exchange Theatre), an up-and-coming talent making her London stage debut as Marie Knight, Rosetta's protege and musical partner. ‘Marie & Rosetta' will be at Chichester Festival Theatre from mid June to mid July and more details can be found by visiting - https://www.cft.org.uk For more about access at the Wolverhampton Grand Theatre do visit the access pages of their website - https://www.grandtheatre.co.uk/access/ (Image shows RNIB logo. Composer Alan Menken is the winner of more Academy Awards in competitive categories than any other living person. He's best known for his scores for the animated Disney films including The Little Mermaid, Pocahontas, Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast. His first big hit was the musical Little Shop Of Horrors - one of several he created with lyricist Howard Ashman, his longtime writing partner. Other stage musicals include Sister Act, The Hunchback Of Notre Dame, and Hercules, which recently opened in London's West End. Alan Menken also wrote the scores for Disney films Mirror Mirror, Enchanted and Tangled. As well as eight Academy Awards, he has also won eleven Grammys, seven Golden Globes, two Emmys and a Tony Award.Alan talks to John Wilson about his childhood in New York and the expectations of his parents that he would follow family tradition and become a dentist like his father. A musical talent from a young age, he recalls how seeing Walt Disney's Fantasia was the start of thinking about the marriage of music with story and images. Despite initial ambitions to be a singer-songwriter, enrolling in a workshop in New York for musical theatre composers, lyricists, and librettists led by composer Lehmann Engel taught him how to write for the stage. It is also through Engel that he met lyricist and director Howard Ashman with whom he went on to write many of the hit scores credited as the driving force behind the Disney Renaissance of the 1980s and 1990s. Tragically, Howard Ashman was diagnosed with HIV in 1988 and died at the age of 40 in 1991.Producer: Edwina Pitman

A thrilling, deep commentary on queer relationships, exploration, and defining one's "otherness" are the cornerstones of this peak 90's movie.

Friend of the Show Jen (@JenWalksN2Walls on TikTok) joins us to cover Sister Act 2. We once again follow the misadventures of Deloris (Whoopi Goldberg), a Las Vegas headliner who selfishly abandons the backup dancers, crew members, and support staff who rely on her show to make their living, all so she can go be a substitute teacher at a Catholic school for some reason. Seriously, is she paying all these people out of her pocket while her show is on hiatus? Or is she like Jimmy Fallon during the 2023 strikes, sending them each a $20 gift card and best wishes?   Anyway. This movie's a lot of fun, but it is all over the place. Looking into the production history, we see it's a hastily produced sequel that seems almost as if it started as an original, unrelated script about a high school choir competition and then had the Sister Act nuns awkwardly grafted onto it. Still, Whoopi Goldberg is her usual delightful self, but she's outshined by these delightful kids, including a just-about-to-be-a-superstar Lauryn Hill as Rita, a high schooler whose mom hates choirs more than anything else.    Next week: Death Proof (2007)   Subscribe to our Patreon, Load Bearing Beams: Collector's Edition for $5 a month to get extra episodes! Whether he's helping shape a brand-new show or breathing life into real people onstage, Caesar Samayoa brings authenticity and heart to every role. In this conversation, Caesar shares what it's like building Just in Time from the ground up—balancing daily rehearsals with nightly performances, and trusting in the collaborative energy of a veteran cast. He opens up about the emotional weight of portraying real people, the lessons learned from immersive productions, and the beauty of audience connection—especially when someone's first or last theatre experience is in his hands. Caesar reflects on his early influences, growing up as a first-generation American, and how a performance of Peter Pan set him on a path toward the stage—despite starting college with plans to study Japanese and international relations. He dives into working with Alex Timbers across four productions, the power of vulnerability in rehearsal, and how How to Dance in Ohio and Come From Away expanded his understanding of representation, empathy, and creative freedom. Caesar Samayoa's Broadway credits include Just in Time, Come From Away, Sister Act, The Pee-wee Herman Show, and How to Dance in Ohio. His TV work includes appearances on Law & Order: SVU, Chicago P.D., and The Code. He is a longtime collaborator of director Alex Timbers and is known for bringing deep emotional range and truth to both fictional and real-life roles. Hail, holy Queen enthroned above; O Maria! Hail, mother of mercy and of love, O Maria!Triumph, all ye cherubim. Sing with us, ye seraphim! Heav'n and earth resound the hymnSalve, salve, salve, Regina!Let the clapping begin!Sister Act isn't just a comedy. It's a celebration of sisterhood, resilience, and the joys you find in unexpected places. It brilliantly flips the script on the traditional representation of nuns, when lounge singer and mobster's girlfriend, Deloris van Cartier, is thrown into the world of convent life after witnessing a murder. Instead of the serene and pious behaviour expected of her, she brings a vibrant, modern flair to the convent that has everyone questioning their notions of faith and community. The new Sister Mary Clarence's vibrant personality clashes with the strict convent rules. From her unique take on the church choir to her interactions with the stern Reverend Mother who, of course, puts her in charge of the choir.Sister Act's iconic soundtrack not only makes you want to sing along, but also showcases how the power of gospel and Motown can turn a group of nuns into a sensational choir, transforming traditional Catholic hymns into toe-tapping gospel hits. But Sister Act wasn't always intended as a starring vehicle for Whoopi Goldberg, and nor did the screenplay end up how it started, but it did lead to the writer, Paul Rudnik, visiting a convent in rural Connecticut, hoping to meet with the only Catholic nun to be a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences...I would love to hear your thoughts on Sister Act !Verbal Diorama is now an award-winning podcast! We welcome Hal (@shestructured on Letterboxd) and Craig (@gentlemanbaby on Letterboxd) from the Red Rose Film Club podcast to cover American Psycho (2000), the Wall Street horror/comedy starring Christian Bale as Patrick "Jason" Bateman. This movie's got a lot going on, folks. And we get to it all—we determine who has the best business card, we explain why you wouldn't want Christian Bale as your co-worker at Whataburger, we try to figure out what's going on with Justin Theroux's hair, and we marvel at Patrick Bateman's chainsaw math. Also, is American Psycho Jared Leto's villain origin story?   But more than anything, we're trying to identify what exactly Patrick Bateman represents. Is he the embodiment of toxic masculinity? A victim of America's addiction to competition and consumption above all else? A misunderstood baby boy? An iconic slasher villain? What if our answer was…. Yes?   Next week:  We are the nation's top fun-havers, so we're taking the week off for Spring Break. Dennis is joined via Zoom by one of his literary heroes, author, screenwriter and playwright Paul Rudnick, to discuss Paul's new novel What is Wrong With You?, which is about an offbeat assortment of gay and straight characters whose lives and lovelives collide at the destination wedding of a tech billionaire on the billionaire's private island. Paul talks about the stranger whose despondent blog post provided the spark of the book. He also talks about the straight personal trainer-gay client friendship that is at the heart of the book, why he chose to make the billionaire character way more redeemable than our world's current crop of tech billionaires and how he doesn't outline his novels, preferring to let "the characters do the driving." He also discusses his career as a screenwriter, penning scripts for hit films like Adams Family Values, In and Out, Jeffrey and Sister Act, which had such a fraught development process that he chose not to have his name taken off the movie. Other topics include: his decades-long friendship with Tony award-winning costume designer William Ivey Long, his fetishistic obsession with design elements like fabrics, luxury brands and high-end materials, how he deals with large-scale personalities like Alan Carr and Scott Rudin when they're working together, whether or not he cries when he writes and the desperation of the super rich. The War and Treaty's Michael and Tanya Trotter grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, and Washington, DC, respectively, but both have family roots in the South. They also grew up in the musical traditions of their churches – Tanya in the Black Baptist Church and Michael in the Seventh Day Adventist Church – where they learned the power of song to move people. After becoming a father at a very young age, Michael eventually joined the armed forces and served in Iraq and Germany, where he took up songwriting as a way of dealing with his experiences there. Meanwhile Tanya embarked on a singing and acting career after a breakthrough appearance in Sister Act 2 alongside Whoopi Goldberg and Lauryn Hill. Now, after a long and sometimes traumatic journey, Michael and Tanya are married, touring, winning all sorts of awards, and set to release their fifth album together, and their fourth as The War and Treaty.
