Today, I'm thrilled to announce my episode with 4-time Tony nominee Judy Kuhn, who is currently appearing in BECOMING EVE at the Abrons Arts Center. Tune in to hear some of the stories of her legendary carer, finding the physicality of her character in FUN HOME, singing on the Tonys with RAGS and LES MISERABLES in the same year, how that performance led to her role in CHESS, working with Trevor Nunn on FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, why her role in ASSASSINS scared her, being voted the killer in THE MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD, acting with Glenn Close in SUNSET BOULEVARD, interpreting the role of Fosca in PASSION, auditioning opposite Boyd Gaines for SHE LOVES ME, and so much more. Don't miss this conversation with a Broadway favorite.
This is a special encore episode of my 2022 interview with Tony-award-winning lighting designer Ken Billington. This past week, Ken received rave reviews for his lighting design of the new Broadway musical SMASH, which amazingly is his 108th Broadway production. So, I thought it was an ideal time to revisit this fascinating conversation about the history of lighting design on Broadway and Ken's own tremendous contribution to it. This is a two-part conversation and I will be rereleasing both parts this week. Original Description: My guest on this episode is Tony Award winning lighting designer Ken Billington who created the lighting for an incredible 105 Broadway plays and musicals, including 21 productions that were directed by Harold Prince. Ken's career spans from his very first Broadway show in 1967 when he was the assistant to legendary lighting designer Tharon Musser, to his most recent Broadway show, the hit musical, Waitress. Along the way, he designed the original productions of Sweeney Todd, On The 20th Century, The Drowsy Chaperone, The Scottsboro Boys, The Search For Signs Of Intelligent Life In the Universe starring Lily Tomlin, three revivals of Fiddler On The Roof, two revivals of Sunday In The Park with George, and the still running 1996 revival of Chicago for which he received the Tony Award. I have had the great pleasure of knowing and working with Ken for more than 40 years, and it is always fascinating and always a delight to speak with him. Theatrical lighting design is a very young art form. Its history begins primarily in the early 20th Century -- just as the Broadway musical was being invented. Lighting design's earliest innovators include the American actress Maude Adams – most famous today for her performance as Peter Pan – and producer, director, playwright, and theater owner David Belasco. One of the recurring themes of this podcast, and one of my obsessions, is how the art and craft of the Broadway Musical have been handed down directly – firsthand – from artists to artists, from craftsperson to craftsperson. Ken Billington's long career and especially his early experiences as the assistant to the pioneering designers Peggy Clark, Pat Collins, Tom Skelton, William Rittman, and Tharon Musser make him the ideal guest for this episode. And of course, after Ken stopped being an assistant, he eventually became one of Broadway's most acclaimed and most prolific lighting designers. And we'll hear the story of how that came about on the next episode of Broadway Nation! You can learn more about Jean Rosenthal, Tharon Musser and other great women lighting designers on Episode 8 of Broadway Nation, which is titled, “Agnes DeMille & The Women That Invented Broadway”. It's a fascinating episode and I encourage you to check it out. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Initially an actress ('Les Miserables', 'Aspects of Love', et al.), Merri found herself out West some years back where she quickly made a name for herself at Liberman/Hirschfeld Casting, then Liberman/Patton Casting, working on such shows as Seinfeld, Party of Five, HBO's Band of Brothers, the feature film My Big Fat Greek Wedding and the Miramax feature film "Playing By Heart", starring Sean Connery and Angelina Jolie. All November we RAISE THE CURTAIN & BELT THE CHORUS for a musicals themed month and we're heading to a fictional Russian town called Anatevka for a folksy tale of a pious and poor Jewish family. This beloved stage show ran very long so perhaps it's no wonder that Norman Jewison's adaptation of “FIDDLER ON THE ROOF” was a box office smash for 1971. In it we meet Tevye' and his family. He's got 3 daughters at marrying age and the good book dictates that their marriages be arranged to benefit their family and status. Such is tradition! But times are changing in Eastern Europe in the early 20th Century and these kids got their own crazy ideas. With the weight of tradition and the dangers of society upon them can Tevye bend without breaking his faith? Starring Chaim Topol, Norma Crane, Leonard Frey and more. Music by Jerry Bock and adapted by John Williams. Angela has booked this month and much of it is Bob's introduction to many musical styles. The only one he's seen for this coming month is “Bye Bye Birdie” of all things. He's only seen three more beyond that. Hear us set fresh eyes and opinions on a beloved classic. Tony Nominee Liz Larsen (BEAUTIFUL, HAIRSPRAY, FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, STARMITES) joins David to share her love of the Disney Parks, specifically "Soarin'," "it's a small world," and the movie MULAN. When Liz was 19 she finally got to go to Disneyland for the first time and shares her memories from that trip, including going on "it's a small world" which she describes as "life changing." Many of Liz's Disney stories revolve around family, watching the movies with them and falling more in love with the characters, and an epic trip in 2005 for five days to Walt Disney World, battling the Florida weather and two small kids (and what happened after a family meal at Cinderella Castle). Liz's love for Disney is infectious, especially when she talks about the attractions and movies in the Disney universe that speaks to her. No "E-Ticket to Broadway" episode would be complete without mentioning Dopey, but this time it's the guest who brings up the Seven Dwarfs, specifically how she wants to be just like them when she's older. Together Liz and David play "The Sherman Brothers' Songbook," playing trivia about music written by the magical Sherman Brothers. Which song from MULAN does this Tony Nominated-actror sing directly to the movie's lyricists' face? Listen to find out! On today's episode author Kevin Winkler returns for the second part of our discussion of his fascinating new book, On Bette Midler — An Opinionated Guide. If you missed part one of this conversation, you may want to catch up with that before listening to this one. In that episode, Kevin and I touched on Bette's childhood, explored her early years in the off-off-Broadway experimental and very campy Gay theater scene, detailed her unusual rise to at least demi-stardom at the Continental Baths, her debut on Broadway in Fiddler On The Roof, and her Tony Award wining concert at the Palace Theater which set the stage for the first of what Kevin calls her Broadway musicals of her own devising: Bette Midler's Clams On The Halfshell Revue, conceived and staged by Broadway director/choreographer Joe Layton, and the shows that followed. For more than twenty years Kevin Winkler was a curator, archivist, and administrator at the New York Public Library, and prior to that, he was a professional dancer. His previous books include the award-winning Big Deal: Bob Fosse and Dance in the American Musical in 2018, and Everything is Choreography: The Musical Theatre of Tommy Tune. Kevin and I discussed that terrific book on several episodes of Broadway Nation back at the beginning of 2022. Become a PATRON of Broadway Nation! This week I am excited to welcome author Kevin Winkler back to Broadway Nation to discuss his new book, On Bette Midler: An Opinionated Guide. This engaging book is a critical analysis of every aspect of Bette Midler's career on stage, recordings, film, and television, but in this conversation, we focus primarily on her work as a theater artist. To date, Midler's long career has been bookended by her appearances in two classic Broadway musicals, Fiddler On The Roof and Hello, Dolly! In between, she invented her distinctive brand of musical theater—“musicals of her own devising,” as Kevin calls them. Ticket Link for Backstage Babble Celebrates Joe Allen Restaurant: https://54below.org/events/backstage-babble-celebrates-joe-allen-restaurant/ Today, I'm thrilled to announce my episode with legendary theater critic Frank Rich, who served as the chief theater critic of the New York Times from 1980-1993. Tune in today to hear some of the stories of his great career, including championing August Wilson, making up with Robert Brustein, watching Jerome Robbins stage the second act of FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, the changes made to the second act of THE ODD COUPLE out of town, his thoughts on the decreasing power of theater criticism in affecting the success of a show, working with Boris Aronson on a book about his work, why he tried not to think about the influence he had on shows, what he learned from Walter Kerr and Kenneth Tynan, what musicals he chooses to see today, working with theater actors on SUCCESSION, the giveaway that a critic didn't personally like a show, and so much more. You won't want to miss this conversation with a greatly influential figure in so many fields.
Traditioooon! On the one hand, listen to this episode for piously popping-off bangers. On the other hand, listen to this episode for daughters dating increasingly problematic bad-boys. The person most confused by the film this week was: Tevye, our king and eternal mood. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
