Bill Horan and Mike DeMarco talk with Richard Panchyk, the author of a new book called Roosevelt Field Through Time, from Arcadia Publishing and The History Press.
Both Bill and Dave have been in bands with this week's guest, and we've all known him for decades, but that doesn't mean we know anything about what he does for a living! We cover his early childhood filled with dinner parties attended by Beat Generation legends, to his introduction to punk rock through D.C. hardcore bands and his work with director Larry Clark which led to his discovery and love of film (at least we think). There's a lot jammed into this episode, from living with tourette syndrome to the Lindburgh kidnapping trial, so get ready! A little #AmWriting behind the scenes: as we headed into this recording, Jess texted KJ:Here’s the lowdown on Mark: I have been a fan of Mark Olshaker’s writing since I first encountered it in 1995. He may be best known for his work with former FBI Special Agent John Douglas, his writing partner since 1995, who pioneered the behavioral crimes unit at the FBI and inspired the Jack Crawford character in Silence of the Lambs. Together they have written many books including Mindhunter, about the role of behavioral profiling in catching violent criminals. His work with Douglas has landed him on the bestseller lists, but he has also written five novels and his nonfiction and documentary work covers subjects as wide-ranging emerging infectious disease, forensic emergency medicine, bioterror, the Lindburgh baby, and victims’ rights. He is also an Emmy-award winning filmmaker, as if that’s not enough AND, in a topic near and dear to my heart, he wrote, produced, and directed the film Discovering Hamlet, about one of my favorite productions of Hamlet directed by Dereck Jacobi and starring Kenneth Branagh. He follows Branagh and Jacobi from first read-throughs to opening night in 1988 and it’s now my life goal to see this film. Mark began his career as a journalist for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the Wall Street Journal, NYT, WaPo, and USA Today and I am SO very excited to talk with him today! The result was every bit as fun as you’d imagine. We talked about finding the real story behind Silence of the Lambs, the “other kinds of detectives”—epidemiologists—and drawing a story based on taking a fact and running with it. Mark quotes Tom Clancy: “The difference between fiction and non-fiction is that fiction has to make sense.” Plus, our guest eviscerates Henry James.Links from the pod:Mind of a Killer PBS episode. The Killer’s Shadow and The Killer Across the TableMindhuntersInc.com #AmReadingMark’s favorite crime fiction: George Pelecanos, Laura Lippman, Ian McEwanAnna Karenina by Leo TolstoyWar and Peace by Leo TolstoyDr. Zhivago by Boris PasternakCrime and Punishment by Fyodor DostoevskyThe Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor DostoevskyAll the King’s Men by Robert Penn WarrenKJ: Plain Bad Heroines Emily M. You know what would make a great children's television? An eleven-minute homage to a gory horror movie from the 70s! Jimmy murders his friends and family to turn them into undead worker drones, makes a bid to become Lindburgh's technocratic dictator, and attempts to cover up his most murderous creation to date. And Hugh kills wildlife on an unprecedented scale...
Taking a break from soul-based alchemy, Jimmy returns to a more mundane form of evil that he visits upon his peers. Jimmy establishes himself as the fascist overlord of Retroville, unleashing biological weapons to both both establish order and sew chaos, and takes the passage of time itself into his clutches. And Hugh leads the citizens of Retroville on a meth-fueled witch hunt to attack his son...
Radio veteran and author Chuck Morse interviews Marc Wortman, author of 1941 - Fighting the Shadow War In 1941: Fighting the Shadow War, A Divided America in a World at War, historian Marc Wortman thrillingly explores the little-known history of America’s clandestine involvement in World War II before the attack on Pearl Harbor.
America First describes the anti-War sentiment that existed in America in the years leading up to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. The America First organization consisted of a cross section of Americans both left and right including such liberal luminaries as Nation Magazine editor Oswald Garrison Villard. One of the leaders of America First, aviator Charles Lindburgh, had pro-Nazi leanings and embraced the same anti-Semitic conspiracy theory that was originally popularized by Karl Marx in the 19th Century, a theory that made up a core belief of the Nazis. The ADL, barely acknowledging anti-Semitism today including a leftist movement to boycott Israel and a recent New York Times headline implying that Israel is killing Palestinian children, has sent out a press release implying that Donald Trump is an anti-Semite for using the slogan 'America First' since Lindburgh was a leader of that group. This smear against Trump is an attempt at a political hit, one that will surely backfire.
