This week we're talking Kelley Stoltz, who has been making amazing DIY pop out of San Francisco for over 25 years for such labels as Sub Pop, Third Man and John Dwyer's Castle Face. His latest is If You Don't Know Me, Buy Now! and is his first of possibly three albums out this year. In addition to his own music, Kelley also spent time as an auxiliary member of Echo & The Bunnymen and Robyn Hitchcock's band, and also produces other artists' albums (Sonny and The Sunsets, Thee Oh Sees). We talked about how his new album works could work as an entry point for the uninitiated, and how he thinks he's only truly found his own sound in the last decade. We also talked about his time living in New York City in the '90s where one of his jobs was sorting Jeff Buckley's fan mail, his path to home recording, the unique sounds of the Ebow, how he went from being a Echo & The Bunnymen superfan -- who had his own tribute band that include Pavement's Spiral Stairs -- to being an actual member of the Bunnymen, and how he ended up playing in Robyn Hitchcock's band. Plus: five records he thinks everyone should own and lots more.

Today's episode was recorded in front of a live audience at the Regent Street Cinema in London: David talks to the writer and broadcaster Misha Glenny about Carol Reed's 1949 masterpiece The Third Man, written by Graham Greene and featuring a notorious film-stealing performance from Orson Welles. It's a film about friendship and betrayal, double-crosses and double lives, divided loyalties and dubious moralities. It is also all about Vienna, a city with a double life of its own. Everyone involved in this film had something to hide: the question is, what? Join us on Wednesday 20th May at the Regent Street Cinema in London for the next film in our spring and summer season: a screening of George Clooney's Good Night, and Good Luck followed by a live podcast recording with David and writer and broadcaster Helen Lewis. Hundreds of survivors across a century — climbers, sailors, divers, soldiers — report the same thing. At the moment they were about to die, a calm presence appeared beside them. It gave directions. It knew the way out. It disappeared the moment the danger passed. A neuroscientist built a machine that can summon something like it. But what his subjects experienced and what survivors describe are not the same thing. The cases are real. The pattern is undeniable. What the presence actually is — that part is still open. He grew up in gang culture…believed he would die in the streets…and was proud of it. Today, his life looks completely different. In this episode of Third Man in the Ring, Popeye Ray sits down with Jay to talk about a life most people will never understand. From violence, jail, and losing friends… to finding purpose, faith, and a new direction. This isn't just a story about where he came from, it's about what changed, and why it matters.
Welcome to the eleventh episode of our ongoing series: Fascism On Film. Each episode of this series, the Holmes Brothers look and review a film that has to do with fascism. During the episodes, the brothers look and see how the aspects and portrayal of fascism shown in the film relate to current and/or past events. On this Fascism on Film episode, the Holmes Brothers look at and discuss the post-war spy thriller from Cat People director Jacques Tourneur: Berlin Express. The film stars Robert Ryan, Merle Oberon, Charles Korvin, Paul Lukas, Robert Coote and Reinhold Schünzel. A group of strangers from various places, the UK, USA, Russia and Europe, are travelling together on a train to Berlin. Onboard the train with them is Dr. Heinrich Bernhardt a diplomat who becomes the target of a Nazi Assassination plot. Upon arriving in bombed out Frankfurt, Robert Ryan and co head out into the ruined city to find Heinrich before it is too late. The film makes very good to use the real locations that still show the marks of the Second World War to give a moody and harsh authenticity that feels reminiscent of Carol Reed's The Third Man. A suspenseful and fast paced noir spy caper. Available to watch on the Criterion Channel. We hope you enjoy this episode and stay tuned for more episodes of this Fascism On Film series.Be sure to check out our Monument Valley Film on our YouTube Channel.Anders's screenwriter work can also be seen at work in the horror, car chase thriller Delivery Run, co-written with & directed by Joey Palmroos. The film has been released digitally and also in select cinemas in the US and the UK. In Finland it was released on Apple TV after finishing its limited cinema run and was the Number 1 film for multiple weeks. You can read a review about it here on the Fangoria website. The film is now available to watch in the other Nordic territories like Sweden, Oslo and of course Denmark. Pete and Hannah review the classic film noir The Third Man
This week, I'm sharing another of my favorite movies - Carol Reed's classic noir drama set on the streets of postwar Vienna The Third Man. Orson Welles makes one of his most memorable screen appearances as the charming rogue Harry Lime, and Joseph Cotten is Holly Martins, Lime's friend who struggles to face the truth about his pal's criminal nature. We'll hear the two stars in Suspense shows - Welles in "The Dark Tower" (originally aired on CBS on May 4, 1944) and Cotten in "Fly By Night" (originally aired on CBS on September 28, 1950). Then, Cotten recreates his film role in a Lux Radio Theatre presentation (originally aired on CBS on April 9, 1951), and finally Welles stars again as Lime in an episode of the radio series The Lives of Harry Lime - "Clay Pigeon."

The Third Man by Graham Greene---Exploring Graham Greene's postwar classic, The Third Man, Jesan Sorrells and Ryan J. Stout unravel the psychology of unreliable narrators, leadership in times of nihilism, and the timeless challenge of ethical decision-making amid a world of grifters and cons. They dive into Greene's cinematic writing style, his nuanced character portrayals, and how postwar Vienna mirrors our own era of skepticism and manipulation. The conversation draws out practical leadership lessons—particularly the need for sincerity and humility—in a landscape shaped by both history and human nature.Book Title: The Third ManAuthor: Graham GreeneGuests: Jesan Sorrells (host), Ryan J. This episode, SECRET MISSION (1942) – Decoded explores one of the most unusual spy films ever made. We examine this wartime espionage movie created without hindsight or guaranteed victory SECRET MISSION Background In this episode of Cracking the Code of Spy Movies, we return to Britain in 1942. World War II is still raging, Europe is occupied, and the outcome is terrifyingly uncertain. Out of that uncertainty comes SECRET MISSION (1942), a spy film that treats espionage as survival, not fantasy. Unlike later spy movies, this film offers no gadgets, swagger, or invincible heroes. Instead, it presents secrecy, fear, restraint, and the danger of being noticed. Every choice matters, and every mistake risks lives. What we decode for SECRET MISSION (1942) The episode breaks down how SECRET MISSION functions as both cinema and wartime instruction. It was propaganda, but also a sober reflection of real intelligence work. The discussion places the film within its historical context, explaining why 1942 truly matters We analyze performances by James Mason, Hugh Williams, Carla Lehmann, and Michael Wilding. James Mason's quiet, observant presence stands in stark contrast to later Bond-style heroes. Here, being invisible is success. The episode also explores civilian involvement and moral cost. Helping a spy could destroy an entire family. We must also remember that trust is fragile, alliances are uncertain, and no one is fully safe. Spycraft takes precedence over action in this movie: Code phrases, compartmentalization, and limited knowledge drive the tension. This approach connects SECRET MISSION to later realistic spy films like The Third Man and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. Ultimately, this episode argues that SECRET MISSION reveals the foundation beneath modern espionage cinema. Before Bond became myth, spying was quiet, dangerous, and rarely celebrated. That reality is what makes this forgotten film worth decoding today. Episode Highlights How this movie coming out DURING the war was impacted by the fact that outcome of World War II hadn't yet been decided. Espionage is portrayed as restraint, not spectacle James Mason in an early, anti-Bond role Realistic spycraft over action and gadgets Wartime cinema as psychological preparation In addition, we talk about this poster that was used in the movie. Is it a real poster? What was its purpose? Tell us what you think about our decoding of SECRET MISSION (1942) Have you seen this movie yet? If not, did listening to this episode make you want to watch it? On the other hand, if you have seen it, where do Dan and Tom get it right, and where do they get it wrong? The so-called “third man factor” is a phenomenon in which people in dire circumstances experience the presence of an extra person in their midst who gives comfort and aid when it's most needed—a guardian angel, perhaps, or some figure of divine intervention. Harry Lime seems to have played just such a role in the lives of Holly Martins and Anna Schmidt. But is Lime from heaven or from hell? Perhaps a less-than-angelic third man might estrange rather than bring together, muddle rather than clarify, adulterate rather than help. And indeed, as a black market middle-man, Lime has the devilish power to intervene in people's lives for the worse—like a narrator who edits out characters and manipulates the plot. Wes & Erin discuss the 1949 classic film “The Third Man,” about friendship and betrayal, and about the stories we tell ourselves in order to love, survive, kill, or even die.
