Filmmaking isn't just about making a great film—it's about getting that film seen. With traditional distribution models crumbling, independent filmmakers are finding new ways to connect directly with audiences. This episode explores how the indie film landscape is shifting, with filmmakers taking control of their own distribution, marketing, and audience-building strategies. Whether you're a first-time filmmaker or a seasoned pro, this episode will inspire you to think outside the box and embrace a more grassroots approach to getting your work into the world. Jon Reiss is a filmmaker, author of the book Think Outside the Box Office, and a media strategist who runs 8 Above, a company that creates custom distribution strategies for indie films. He has consulted with filmmakers and organizations worldwide including The Gotham, IDA, and Film Independent, and has led workshops on distribution and marketing through his 8 Above Distribution Lab. Reiss is currently producing a documentary on robotic performance artist Mark Pauline, and is producing the second season of a podcast, Plantscendence, about people's psychedelic experiences. He has recently launched a Substack focused on indie film distribution and marketing. Annamaria Sofillas, a development executive and producer, is the Director of Content at Kino Lorber's MHz SVOD. She is the lead producer of the documentary "I'm “George Lucas": A Connor Ratliff Story, which premiered at Slamdance '24 and received theatrical exhibition nationwide through Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas, with digital distribution by Grasshopper Film. Annamaria was instrumental in building NBCUniversal's Seeso and Gimlet Media's scripted division, where she led over 25 long-form television series and 30 stand-up specials, including the GLAAD Award-nominated Take My Wife and BAFTA Award-nominated Flowers. Scott Monahan, the filmmaker behind Anchorage, has been candid about his experience with self-distribution, highlighting the challenges and successes of taking control of a film's release. Glen Reynolds, founder of Circus Road Films, is a producer rep and festival advocate who helps indie filmmakers navigate distribution and find the right partners to bring their projects to audiences. In this roundtable discussion, No Film School's GG Hawkins speaks with Jon Reiss, Annamaria Sofillas, Scott Monahan, and Glen Reynolds to discuss: Why hybrid distribution is essential for indie filmmakers today How film festivals and events can help grow your audience Why setting clear release goals is crucial for your film's success How building your audience starts long before your film's release Real-world examples of filmmakers using grassroots promotion and festival tours Why filmmakers are taking control of their own marketing and outreach strategies How indie filmmakers are embracing a punk rock mentality to bypass traditional distribution models Links: Learn more about Scott Monahan Learn more about Glen Reynolds Follow Annamaria Sofillas on Instagram Buy or rent I'm “George Lucas”: A Connor Ratliff Story on Amazon/Apple I'm "George Lucas": A Connor Ratliff Story Website Follow I'm “George Lucas” on Instagram Follow I'm “George Lucas” on Facebook Follow I'm “George Lucas” on X 8 Above with Jon Reiss Substack 8 Above website Find No Film School everywhere: On the Web https://nofilmschool.com/ Facebook https://www.facebook.com/nofilmschool Twitter https://twitter.com/nofilmschool YouTube https://www.youtube.com/user/nofilmschool Instagram https://www.instagram.com/nofilmschool Send us an email with questions or feedback: podcast@nofilmschool.com! In this episode, Christian Taylor interviews Joe Amodei of Virgil Films Entertainment about the changing landscape of film distribution. They discuss the role of distributors in acquiring and selling the rights to films, the rise of streaming platforms, and the challenges faced by filmmakers in finding trustworthy distributors. Joe shares his insights and experiences from his 20 years in the industry and offers advice for filmmakers considering self-distribution. Takeaways The role of distributors is to acquire and sell the rights to films, including digital platforms, TV channels, DVD, theatrical release, and international markets. Welcome back to the Independent Filmmaker's GuideThe navigation of film distribution can be one of the more difficult parts of the filmmaker's process. From understanding deal memos, aligning expectations, to simply getting something you've undoubtedly spent so much time and effort on in front of, and sometimes literally in the hands of, your intended audience. These are just some of the things covered in today's valuable and personal episode with guest Malcolm Ingram - an acclaimed and decorated filmmaker and documentarian, as well as an ambassador of the now resurgent desire for physical media. Leveraging all these things, Ingram felt a personal pull to, most recently, start his own distribution company with a focus on this physical media Mercantile Instinct. And his first release is the film CLERK (yes, a look at the man and the stories behind the hit CLERKS). CLERK will feature both Blu-Ray as well as VHS and Blu-Ray - with wide release on September 26th. After taking a few weeks off, Evan and Tony are reunited for a brand new episode of End Scene! Evan and Tony spend some time catching up on what they've been up to the last few weeks before they dive in to the week's topics. This week, Tony and Evan talk about Taylor Swift's Eras Tour Concert film and how her direct-to-consumer model for distributing the film is a groundbreaking move (07:37). Next, Tony and Evan talk about a lawsuit that was dismissed in California alleging that the removal of actress Ana De Armas in the film "Yesterday" did not amount to a viable cause of action or a tortious claim, even though she appeared in the trailer for the film (21:26). Finally, in honor of Evan's Greek getaway, Tony and Evan share their favorite Greek dish (29:06). We're on Shayk! Put some people around you that can give you some nice wisdom... Become skilled at your craft, screenwriting, cinematography, whatever. What I see too often is passion for ministry or passion to tell a story trumps the time it takes to really make it ready for production and compete in the marketplace.” -Trey Reynolds About Trey Reynolds As VP of Development and Production, Trey Reynolds leads the Provident Films team to produce, market and distribute faith and family films. Provident Films is a business unit of SONY Music Entertainment. For over 20 years, Trey has worked in the film industry for small start-ups to large corporate businesses. Cris Saur was in college studying to become a civil engineer when she was scouted to be a model. Cris became a successful Brazilian model and while on the outside it seemed the tables had turned for this shooting star who was bullied in school for being taller and skinnier than the rest of the girls, like most models are, something was not right. The pressure to be perfect for decades left her with very low self-esteem and she only realized how damaged her self-esteem actually was after being physically abused by a former partner. The depression that ensued pushed her to her limit and it was only after seeing Forest Gump, did she feel a call to action to make a change in her own life. Ironically, Mel Rose had her own Forest Gump moment and could relate intensely when they first discussed Cris' story. It has become clear that much of Cris' story seems to ring true for many women who have experienced the lifestyle of being a professional model. Abusive work will often perpetuate abuse in other area's of a person's life and this is why career is so important! Cris decided to do something about it and realized that the distorted ideas of beauty in our society deserved a quest. Cris sold her car, grabbed a camera, and traveled around the world on a quest for how different cultures define beauty. Cris found that it is often when we stop moving and sit very still and learn to think and act differently, only then do we really find the change and beauty in life that we crave. Through her journey and content creation, Cris produced an amazing documentary; Quest for Beauty, which you can find here. She premiered during covid. The proceeds benefited a women's shelter since her film was prompted by her own battle with domestic abuse. Cris is amazing and doing big things in live, so take note, dig in and get inspired by this amazing woman! On this episode Mel and Cris discuss Cris' journey and the gratefulness she has for naivety to even try creating a film, her process in becoming a now professional film director, producer and star, and reflecting on the emotional place that she has arrived to in her life now. They discuss the concept the world being a large array of people either running away or running towards something and the importance of knowing where you are on that spectrum and what you want. Tune in for some really amazing ideas and to be inspired by another amazing Seastar who is on a mission to change the world in her own authentic way. Cris recommends reading the Autobiography of a Yogi by Paramahansa Yogananda and Planetary Transiton by Divaldo Pereira Franco and Manoel Philomeno de Miranda. If you are interested in film she recommends Save the Cat, Making Movies by Sidney Lumet, Guide to Film Distribution, Documentary Storytelling, How to Shoot Video that Doesn't Suck, and Shut Up and Shoot.
