On May 31,1985, two days before her high school graduation, Shari Faye Smith was abducted from the driveway of her family home in South Carolina. For several days after the abduction, the kidnapper called and sent letters to the family, taunting them with details of abduction and murder of Shari. Ultimately, he revealed the location of Shari's body on a phone call to Shari's older sister, Dawn. But he wasn't finished. Two weeks to the day of Shari's abduction, the murderer snatched another victim, 9-year-old Debra May Helmick, who came to a similar fate. The authorities realized they were dealing with a sadistic, narcissistic serial killer of young women.   WHEN A KILLER CALLS is the haunting story of Murder, Criminal Profiling and Justice in a small town, written by John Douglas and Mark Olshaker. John and Mark have written 7 previous books, including Mindhunter, the number one New York Times bestseller that was the basis for the hit Netflix series of the same name. Mark drew the short straw, and he joins me today on Murder Most Foul.

In the early 1970's, F.B.I agent, John E. Douglas, created and managed the FBI's Criminal Profiling Program, now called the Behavioral Analysis Unit. Agent Douglas became the inspiration for the character Jack Crawford in “The Silence of the Lambs,” played by actor Scott Glenn. Douglas has interviewed numerous serial killers and other violent sex offenders at various prisons, including David Berkowitz, John Wayne Gacy, Charles Manson and others. In the late 1990's he formed a partnership with author and documentary producer, Mark Olshaker, called MINDHUNTER, INC. Together they wrote numerous True Crime books, based on John's experiences in the field. One of their books, Mindhunter: Inside the FBI's Elite Serial Crime Unit was the basis for the popular Netflix series, of the same name. Author and Mindhunter, Mark Olshaker, joins me today on Murder Most Foul.

Last week, I told you about the abduction and murder of seven-year-old Joan D'Alessandro. On April 19, 1973, Joan was delivering Girl Scout cookies when her neighbor, Joseph McGowan, a high school science teacher, lured her into his basement, sexually assaulted her, and brutally beat and strangled the helpless little girl. McGowan pleaded guilty to felony murder and was sentenced to life in the New Jersey prison system with the possibility of parole after 14 years. In this episode, I'll dig deep into McGowan's various psychological evaluations and his interview with famed FBI profiler John Douglas, trying to reconcile the mild-mannered man McGowan appeared to be with the heinous rapist and murderer he became on Holy Thursday, 1973. Also in this episode, you'll hear my conversation with Joan's mother, Rosemarie D'Alessandro, who has spent decades advocating for children and victims' families in her beloved daughter's name. This is part 2 of the horrifying but incredibly inspiring story of Joan D'Alessandro. Thanks to Magic Mind for sponsoring the show! On April 19, 1973, seven-year-old Joan D'Alessandro left her family's home in Hillsdale, New Jersey to deliver her last two boxes of Girl Scout cookies. She never returned. After a massive search and an intensive investigation, police zeroed in on the family's neighbor, 27-year-old high school science teacher Joseph McGowan, who soon confessed that he had sexually abused and murdered Joan before dumping her body in Harriman State Park, just over the border in New York State. For decades, Joan's mother, Rosemarie D'Alessandro, has led a charge to change laws, both state and federal, to better protect victims' families. This short memoir details her life both before and after the attack and discusses how she put her life back together to both survive and to thrive in spite of her trauma.PAIR THIS WITH: Michelle McNamara and Paul Haynes “I'll Be Gone in the Dark”; the HBO mini-series of the same name; XG Productions Audible Original “Evil Has a Name.”3) When a Killer Calls-- John Douglas and Mark Olshaker.I'm an unabashed John Douglas fan; everything he and Mark Olshaker have ever written lives somewhere on my true crime bookshelves. But this is by far the best of their work and that is really saying something! The kidnapping and murder of Shari Smith is horrifying, but even more so is the behavior of the offender. It is so audacious and cruel that it sounds like something from a movie. John's work on the case will break your heart… but it is the work of a profiler at the top of his game!PAIR THIS WITH: Anything this dynamic duo have previously written! You will never get a boring or poorly written book from these guys!We interviewed Mark Olshaker about this book on Mind Over Murder on February 14th and February 21st, 2022.4) Journey to the Center of the Mind Books 1-3-- James Fitzgerald.Grab a hot drink, snuggle under a warm blanket, and leave yourself plenty of time to binge! Jim “Fitz” Fitzgerald's career as both a uniformed cop and then an FBI profiler is full of ups and downs, which he skillfully and entertainingly details in his books. Get all 3 books if you want the full and unabridged Fitz story, though book 3 is my favorite as that's where we learn all about the Unabomb case and linguistic profiling. Make sure you check out his website for books and other merch (www.jamesrfitzgerald.com) including autographed posters.PAIR THIS WITH: Fitz's podcast The Fitz Files (which features a cameo from Kristin); the original drama MANHUNT: UNABOMBER; and the XG Productions Audible original “Where the Devil Belongs.”We interviewed Fitz on Mind Over Murder about the Unabomber and his books on June 30 and July 7, 2022.5) ShadowMan: An Elusive Psycho Killer and the Birth of FBI Profiling-- Ron Franscell. The story of Howard Teten and Patrick Mullany's profile of the Susie Jaeger kidnapping case was all new to me, but it's an absolutely enthralling story. These are the two men who started the BSU—the profiling legends we know today (Rob Ressler, John Douglas, Judd Ray) learned the ropes from Teten and Mullaney. The unsub at the heart of this story is your classic “nice guy next door” and it will definitely make you reevaluate what you think you know about your neighbors! It's a pulse pounding read!PAIR THIS WITH: If you're in the mood for a history of the early days of the BSU, start here, progress to Ann Burgess's “A Killer by Design”, then move on to the earliest Douglas and Olshaker collabs “Mindhunter” and “Journey into Darkness.” Take time for Robert Ressler's book “Whoever Fights Monsters” as well.6) Madman in the Woods—Jamie Gehring. What was it like to live literally next door to Ted Kaczynski, the Unabomber? To have him show up at your door and even have him over for dinner? Jamie Gehring could tell you. She lived next to him in Montana. If you ever wanted to know who Ted Kaczynski was and how he evolved into the Unabomber, Jamie's book will bring you as close as you'll ever come, short of having a conversation with him yourself. This is a stunner of a memoir. I can't recommend it enough.PAIR THIS WITH: Jim Fitzgerald's JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE MIND, book 3; a viewing of MANHUNT: UNABOMBER; Audible original “Where the Devil Belongs”; the Audible version of this book, read by Jamie herself. We interviewed Jamie on Mind Over Murder on June 27th, 2022.7) Keeping On—Gemma Hoskins. You knew her and loved her on THE KEEPERS! But do you know the real Gemma Hoskins? You can by reading her book! Gemma's memoir is by turns funny, poignant, and insightful. There's plenty of info on Sister Cathy Cesnik's case and yes, there are some bombshells you won't want to miss!PAIR THIS WITH: A re-watch of THE KEEPERS! It's been a few years since it first aired, so it's more than time to give it another viewing! Pop some popcorn, grab a fuzzy blanket, and be prepared to give up a few hours of your life in a binge of epic proportions. We interviewed Gemma on Mind Over Murder on July 28th and August 4th.8. Trailed: One Woman's Quest to Solve the Shenandoah Murders—Kathryn Miles. This labor of love from Kate Miles is one of the best true crime reads in recent memory, tying together the murders of Julie Williams and Lollie Winans in the Shenandoah National Park with other missing and murdered women in Virginia. She discusses some compelling theories as to who may have murdered the women back in 1996 and sheds light on major issues within the NPS during that time period. It's thought-provoking and sensitive reporting. Highly recommended!PAIR THIS WITH: “The Cold Vanish” from Jon Billman (which we featured on last year's gift guide), which also explores disappearances and murders in national parks. We interviewed Kate on Mind Over Murder on May 16th and May 23rd of 2022.9) How to Catch a Killer and I Scream Man—Dr. Katherine Ramsland. We couldn't pick just one book out of Dr. Ramsland's whopping catalogue; you'll never get a bad book from this talented, astute, and prolific writer. But we opted for her two most recent releases—How to Catch a Killer is about the hunt for and capture of the world's most notorious serial killers including Rodney Alcala (the Dating Game killer); GSK; Aileen Wuoronos; and many more. This is part of the Profiles in Crime series, so if you love this one, there's more to come. And we couldn't neglect Dr. Ramsland's fiction debut … I Scream Man, featuring protagonist Annie Hunter who seems to be quite a bit like the good doctor herself! It's an excellent first book in a new series and we are looking forward to more! Check out all of Dr. Ramsland's books at www.katherineramsland.net.PAIR THIS WITH: Any of her 70 other books! I recommend the two that tie in to CSI and CRIMINAL MINDS.We interviewed Dr. Ramsland on Mind Over Murder on July 4 and July 11 of 2022.10) The Babysitter—Liza Rodman.Imagine, if you will, learning that your beloved childhood babysitter was a sadistic psychopath who was murdering women when he wasn't watching you. That's precisely what happened to Liza Rodman when she learned that Tony Costa, handyman and her childhood babysitter, was the ghoul responsible for murdering and dismembering four women in the Truro woods near Provincetown. The premise on its own is enough to make your skin crawl … learning what Tony Costa was actually doing made me want to sleep with the lights on! This pairs perfectly with HELLTOWN by Casey Sherman, which covers Tony Costa's crimes.PAIR THIS WITH: HELLTOWN, below!11) Helltown—Casey Sherman.Liza Rodman's childhood babysitter, Tony Costa, was a horrific serial killer who haunted the Cape Cod and Provincetown area, murdering and dismembering women. His horrific crimes and his court case are covered expertly in the book. Also explored is the pull the case had over two enigmatic local writers—Kurt Vonnegut and Normal Mailer. This meticulously researched and brilliantly crafted book was one of my favorite true crime reads of this year.PAIR THIS WITH: THE BABYSITTER, above! We interviewed Casey on Mind Over Murder on September 19th 202212) American Demon—Daniel Stashower. There's so much more to Eliot Ness than his time with the Untouchables. This deep dive into Ness's time in Cleveland and his work trying to solve the series of brutal slayings by the Butcher of Kingsbury Run is masterful. Stashower has a wonderful touch with historical crimes … they seem to come alive on the page. The book is meticulously researched, gorgeously written, and will keep you turning pages.PAIR THIS WITH: THE BEAUTIFUL CIGAR GIRL, Stashower's book about the murder of Mary Rogers and Edgar Allan Poe's involvement in it.We interviewed Dan on Mind Over Murder on October 31st, 2022.GIFTS OF SERVICE:1) You can help to solve a crime in one of two ways by going to DNASolves.com. You can either help to fund a case (or two or three) in any dollar amount, large or small, or you can follow the instructions on how to provide your own DNA to help grow the searchable law enforcement database.2) We know you love the work that Othram does as much as we do! They are absolutely smashing cold case solves! Did you know they have a ton of great merchandise to offer as well? Happy Holidays from Kristin and Bill!

Remember the original Unsolved Mysteries from back in the day when Robert Stack was the host? How he always wrapped up the intro by saying, “Perhaps you may be able to solve a mystery.” Retired FBI Criminal Profiler John Douglas agrees. He says in our book today that “...there's almost always someone out there who has information needed to complete the puzzle.” Our book this week is The Anatomy of Motive by John Douglas and Mark Olshaker and our guest is a familiar one, private investigator Sheila Wysocki. She's going to help us understand what the term “victimology” means how you prepare one and why it's so important for investigations Sheila Wysocki became a household name in the private investigation world after she helped solve the cold-case murder of her college roommate, Angie Samota, more than 25 years later. Only wanting to figure out Angie's case, Wysocki was ready to close the case on her PI career. However, that's when letters from around the world came pouring into her inbox begging her to help their families who had mysteriously lost a loved one. “I just couldn't say no,” recalls Wysocki, “these families were in the same position I was after Angie's death, and I knew I had to at least try to help them.” Since then, Wysocki has worked on over 100 complicated cases, has been nominated as one of the Top 20 Best Nashville Private Investigators, and voted the number six most influential woman private investigator. She has been featured in The Washington Post and has appeared on Anderson Cooper, Dateline, Katie Couric, A&E Biography's “I Solved a Murder,” ABC's 20/20, Crime Watch Daily, Criminal, and numerous other podcasts. Persistence has always been how her colleagues characterize her and that persistence has paid off in the many cold cases she has worked. What I learned from rereading Land's Polaroid: A Company and the Man Who Invented It by Peter C. Wensberg.[0:01] Why is Polaroid a nutty place? To start with, it's run by a man who has more brains than anyone has a right to. He doesn't believe anything until he's discovered it and proved it for himself. Because of that, he never looks at things the way you and I do. He has no small talk. He has no preconceived notions. He starts from the beginning with everything. That's why we have a camera that takes pictures and develops them right away.[1:33] More books on Edwin Land: Insisting on The Impossible: The Life of Edwin Land by Victor McElheny The Instant Image: Edwin Land and the Polaroid Experienceby Mark Olshaker A Triumph of Genius: Edwin Land, Polaroid, and the Kodak Patent War by Ronald Fierstein Instant: The Story of Polaroid by Chris Bonanos [2:18] “Then I read something that one of my heroes, Edwin Land of Polaroid, said about the importance of people who could stand at the intersection of humanities and sciences, and I decided that's what I wanted to do.” —  Steve Jobs: The Exclusive Biography by Walter Isaacson (Founders #214)[5:17] This guy started one of the great technology monopolies and ran it for 50 years.[7:35] He lived his life more intensely than the rest of us.[8:53] His interest in our reactions was minimal — polite, sometimes kind, but limited by the great drain of energy necessary to sustain his own part.[9:30] He never argued his ideas. If people didn't believe in them, he ignored those people. —A Mind at Play: How Claude Shannon Invented the Information Age by Jimmy Soni and Rob Goodman  (Founders #95) Loomis was not someone you could argue with. He would listen patiently to an opposing opinion. But his consideration was nothing more than that-an act of politeness on his part.” — Tuxedo Park: A Wall Street Tycoon and The Secret Palace of Science That Changed The Course of World War II by Jennet Conant (Founders #143)[11:40] Right before he introduces the most important product he ever makes — he is in a fight for his life. There's a good chance that Polaroid is going to be bankrupt.[14:29] The parallel to Steve Jobs is striking. Edwin Land —like jobs — had to turn around the company he founded before they ran out of money![15:02] At 37 he had achieved everything to which he aspired except success.[15:32] Against The Odds: An Autobiography by James Dyson (Founders #200)[22:48] The heroes of your heroes become your heroes.[23:39] Bill Gates would later tell a friend he went to Harvard to learn from people smarter than he was —and left disappointed. —Hard Drive: Bill Gates and the Making of the Microsoft Empire by James Wallace and Jim Erickson (Founders #140)[27:22] The young hurl themselves into vast problems that have troubled the world's best thinkers, believing that they can find a solution. It is well that they should for, from time to time, one of them does. — Autobiography of a Restless Mind: Reflections on the Human Condition Volume 2 by Dee Hock. (Founders #261)[29:30] He concentrated ferociously on his quest.[29:43] We live in the age of infinite distraction.[30:03] My whole life has been spent trying to teach people that intense concentration for hour after hour can bring out in people resources they didn't know they had.[30:29] Among all the components and Land's intellectual arsenal, the chief one seems to be simple concentration. — The Instant Image: Edwin Land and The Polaroid Experience by Mark Olshaker. (Founders #132)[41:50] A Landian question took nothing for granted, accepted no common knowledge, tested the cliche, and treated conventional wisdom as an oxymoron.[42:44] A Triumph of Genius: Edwin Land, Polaroid, and the Kodak Patent War by Ronald Fierstein  (Founders #134)[48:33] They had no alternative but to succeed with the camera. Everyone left at Polaroid knew that at the present rate of decline the business, the company, and their jobs would not survive 1947.[55:45] Smith estimated that throughout the eighties he spent at least four hours a day reading. He found he relied quite heavily on his own vision, backed by assimilating information from many different disciplines all at once. “The common trait of people who supposedly have vision is that they spend a lot of time reading and gathering information, and then synthesize it until they come up with an idea." — Overnight Success: Federal Express and Frederick Smith, Its Renegade Creator by Vance Trimble (Founders #151)[59:05] If you're not good, Jeff will chew you up and spit you out. And if you're good, he will jump on your back and ride you into the ground. — The Everything Store: Jeff Bezos and the Age of Amazon by Brad Stone. (Founders #179) [1:02:24] They were among the first of the park's attractions to be finished, but the pressure of time was already weighing on everyone. One day John Hench stopped by to check the progress on the coaches and had an idea, which he brought to his boss. "Why don't we just leave the leather straps off, Walt? The people are never going to appreciate all the close-up detail."Walt Disney treated Hench to a tart little lecture: "You're being a poor communicator. People are okay, don't you ever forget that. They will respond to it. They will appreciate it."Hench didn't argue. David does an outstanding job summarizing these biographies and hones in on the elements that make his subjects so unique among entrepreneurs. Her abductor then made repeated phone calls to her family taunting her mother and sister. Sadly, Smith was found dead days later. The book details the crime and the work of police, the FBI, and Shari's family to find her murderer and bring him to justice.   You can purchase the book from local bookshops or online here: https://amzn.to/3k5ICJy   This episode's music is by Tyler Boone (tylerboonemusic.com). The episode was produced by LMC Soundsystem.

It's important to understand that the reason we must go to these dark places, such as violent crime, is in the interest of prevention of future crime. In this episode, Dr. Graham Taylor is joined today by Dr. Gary Mercado, clinical psychologist, researcher, and author in the areas of violence, early psychosis, and other serious psychopathology. Gary is also the writer of The New Evil: Understanding the Emergence and Modern Violent Crime co-authored by Dr.Michael Stone. Together Graham and Gary define what evil is, understanding the horror attached to violent acts, and understand the psychological implications of what they're doing, and what's driving it. Gary talks about the development of the 22 Category Scale of Evil that looks at the factors in a person's life as a spectrum to better understand the behavior behind the acts of violence and how this scale is being used in assisting with the capture and prevention of future violent crimes. And finally, they discuss the trends in violent crime and the reasons behind the shift from serial killings to mass murder. The Stranger Diaries (Harbinder Kaur #1) by Elly Griffiths Published March 5th 2019 by Mariner BooksClare Cassidy is no stranger to murder. A high school English teacher specializing in the Gothic writer R. M. Holland, she teaches a course on it every year. But when one of Clare's colleagues and closest friends is found dead, with a line from R. M. Holland's most famous story, “The Stranger,” left by her body, Clare is horrified to see her life collide with the storylines of her favourite literature. To make matters worse, the police suspect the killer is someone Clare knows. Unsure whom to trust, she turns to her closest confidant, her diary, the only outlet she has for her darkest suspicions and fears about the case. Then one day she notices something odd. Writing that isn't hers, left on the page of an old diary: "Hallo, Clare. You don't know me."Clare becomes more certain than ever: “The Stranger” has come to terrifying life. But can the ending be rewritten in time? The Killer Across the Table: Unlocking the Secrets of Serial Killers and Predators with the FBI's Original Mindhunterby John E. Douglas, Mark OlshakerPublished May 7th 2019 by Dey Street BooksThe legendary FBI criminal profiler, number-one New York Times bestselling author, and inspiration for the hit Netflix show Mindhunter delves deep into the lives and crimes of four of the most disturbing and complex predatory killers, offering never-before-revealed details about his profiling process, and divulging the strategies used to crack some of America's most challenging cases. The FBI's pioneer of criminal profiling, former special agent John Douglas, has studied and interviewed many of America's most notorious killers—including Charles Manson, ”Son of Sam Killer” David Berkowitz and ”BTK Strangler” Dennis Rader—trained FBI agents and investigators around and the world, and helped educate the country about these deadly predators and how they operate, and has become a legend in popular culture, fictionalized in The Silence of the Lambs and the hit television shows Criminal Minds and Mindhunter.Twenty years after his famous memoir, the man who literally wrote the book on FBI criminal profiling opens his case files once again. In this riveting work of true crime, he spotlights four of the most diabolical criminals he's confronted, interviewed and learned from. Going deep into each man's life and crimes, he outlines the factors that led them to murder and how he used his interrogation skills to expose their means, motives, and true evil. Like the hit Netflix show, The Killer Across the Table is centered around Douglas' unique interrogation and profiling process. With his longtime collaborator Mark Olshaker, Douglas recounts the chilling encounters with these four killers as he experienced them—revealing for the first time his profile methods in detail.Going step by step through his interviews, Douglas explains how he connects each killer's crimes to the specific conversation, and contrasts these encounters with those of other deadly criminals to show what he learns from each one. In the process, he returns to other famous cases, killers and interviews that have shaped his career, describing how the knowledge he gained from those exchanges helped prepare him for these.A glimpse into the mind of a man who has pierced the heart of human darkness, The Killer Across the Table unlocks the ultimate mystery of depravity and the techniques and approaches that have countered evil in the name of justice.Mother May I - by Joshilyn Jackson Revenge doesn't wait for permission.Published April 6th 2021 by William MorrowGrowing up poor in rural Georgia, Bree Cabbat was warned by her single mother that the world was a dark and scary place. Last year, CIDRAP Director Michael Osterholm, PhD along with Mark Olshaker released the very interesting and relevant book, Deadliest Enemy: Our War Against Killer Germs. I talked to "Bad News Mike" last April on the radio show about some of the most important public health issues addressed in the book to include bioterrorism, vaccines, antibiotic resistance and pandemic influenza, to name a few. A great storyteller with vast experience in infectious disease epidemiology, Osterholm covered these topics with experience, zeal, knowledge and never pulling any punches. As one Amazon reviewer writes: Fabulous read from a great writer/scientist/public health warrior!

Mindhunter is the latest Netflix original series based on the true crime book, 'Mindhunter: Inside the FBI's Elite Crime Unit' written by John E. Douglass and Mark Olshaker. The series depicts the FBI's slow growing serial killer unit in 1977. Surpassing the standard viewpoint on the criminal element of the past, FBI agents Holden Ford (Jonathan Groff) and Bill Tench (Holt McCallany) interview imprisoned serial killers to try and broaden their understanding of the psychology of these type of criminals, and to hopefully help stop future killers. The series works very much in the same vein as "Silence of the Lambs." One has to understand how a killer's mind works in order to stop a killer. Mindhunter is the first step in the FBI's now famous "profilers" group of agents. This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/5939723/advertisement
