Ask for the Gig You Want: Kevin Glendinning on SNL, Super Bowls, and 25 Years on the Road

Monitor engineer Kevin “KG” Glendinning joins you live from a Roman amphitheater in Pula, Croatia: eight countries in seven days into the Lorde world tour…and he’s got the receipts. You’ll hear how fifteen trips through the SNL stage started with a Carson Daly taping, why the rooms that treat you well are the rooms you remember, and what happens when a 32-year veteran finally plugs in a source expander and realizes the “new guys” were right. That’s the through-line: always be learning, always be open-minded, and never let a get-off-my-lawn attitude about new tech be the reason your phone stops ringing. Then it gets into the real in-ear monitor conversations: recreating a Celestion cab with a 2.6mm armature, the one-ear trick that quietly costs Adam Levine and John Mayer another 25% of volume, and why ear fatigue deserves the same respect a pitcher gives his arm. The road stories land hard from there. Super Bowl XLV in Dallas with snow, the Black Eyed Peas, and a lesson in letting the pros run their own show. Red Rocks (aka “Wet Rocks”) and why a mountain full of shuttle trucks is worth every minute. A locked-up console mid-residency and telling Christina Aguilera the audio will come back, all while genuinely hoping it would. A charter plane struck by lightning over the Amazon, an emergency landing at a decommissioned airfield, and waking up to the news about Taylor Hawkins. Plus the covert phone call that became seven years with Justin Timberlake, and the soft ask years earlier that made it happen. Rehearse enough that nerves turn into muscle memory, thank the people who opened doors for you, ask for the gig you want…and Always Be Performing. 00:00:00 Gig Gab 549 – Monday, August 31st, 2026 August 31st: Eat Outside Day Guest co-host: Kevin Glendinning 00:02:38 Pula, Croatia. 8 countries in 7 days 00:04:36 SNL stage for The Deftones with the Carson Daly show 00:06:20 Making an impression on touring musicians with 00:08:35 Always be learning about the new tech Learning from the “new” guys Neve 5045 Primary Source Expander Waves PSE Plugin Digico Mustard Source Enhancer 00:13:55 Always be open-minded 00:18:57 Mixing ears and the respect of it all 00:21:02 Chris Rabold mixing monitors for REM 00:22:06 Now some REM stories 00:24:23 Helping get Adam Levine & John Mayer through ear fatigue with one ear monitor 00:26:46 OzFest System Engineers and hearing fatigue 00:27:45 Sometimes it just doesn't sound right 00:30:44 Super Bowl in 2011 in Dallas…with snow! This week brings another installment of “Degrees Of Separation…,” where we dig into the side projects, supergroups, and solo releases connected to a particular artist. This time, we pay tribute to a rock n' roll workhorse and journeyman from the Great White North: a jack-of-all-trades musician who seems to be single-handedly keeping many of the legacy artists we love in fighting shape. He's not only a multi-instrumentalist and consummate rock star, but he also has some of the best pipes in the business. Of course, we're talking about TODD “DAMMIT” KERNS!!! New to InObscuria? It's all about excavating obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal from one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. While you may know Todd primarily as Slash's bass player and backing vocalist, you may not realize just how deep his catalog of side projects runs—or how many artists he has supported throughout his career. As always, our hope is that we turn you on to something new!   Songs this week include: Minefield - “All American Man” from Minefield (2021) Smash L.A. - “Breakin' All The Rules” from Law ‘N' Authority (1989) Blackbird Angels - “Mine (All Mine)” from Solsorte (2023) The Age Of Electric - “Remote Control” from Make A Pest A Pet (1997) Sin City Sinners - “Goin' To Vegas” from Exile On Fremont Street (2010) Bob Kulick - “Rich Man” from Skeletons In The Closet (2017) Todd Kerns - “You Know What You Did” from TKO (2016) Static In Stereo - “Overboard” from Static In Stereo (2002) Toque - “The Spirit Of Radio” from Never Enough (2019) Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/ https://bonelesspodcasting.com/shows/in-obscuria https://www.facebook.com/InObscuria https://twitter.com/inobscuria https://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/ Buy cool stuff with our logo on it: InObscuria Store If you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/ If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/ Check out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/

In this Episode, Kelly is joined by writer Gabriel Rotello! He is the author of two books: Sexual Ecology: AIDS and the Destiny of Gay Men and The CBGB Conspiracy. He became the first openly gay op-ed columnist for a major American newspaper and is the founder of Out Week Magazine. He has also written, directed, and produced dozens of TV documentaries for major networks like HBO, Netflix, and the History Channel. Gabriel talks about growing up in Danbury, Connecticut, and traveling into the city with his older brother when he was 13! Even at that age, he knew he wanted to move to New York when he grew up. Kelly asks him what life was like in New York in the 1970s. Gabriel talks about how Manhattan was a playground for young adults in their early 20s. He tells us how cheap his rent was, describes the decay of the Bowery in great detail, and talks about how wonderful it was to play music at CBGB.  Kelly asks Gabriel about CBGB. Gabriel tells us that in the beginning, no one wanted to go there. He describes the "Bowery Bums", the mismanagement of the venue, and its terrible location. He then talks about how it became one of the most famous punk venues in the world.  Gabriel talks a bit about his book: The CBGB Conspiracy. He tells Kelly that he actually did not want to write a book about his time in the 70s at first. With the aids epidemic looming over it, he thought it too depressing. But when inspiration struck, while walking along the street one day, he came up with the idea of creating a murder mystery, with CBGB as the background and weaving in famous people of the era, along with his personal experiences. Kelly asks Gabriel a bit about the process of writing, and Gabriel talks about how he was inspired by a past guest of our show, Jonathan Mahler! He talks about reading Ladies and Gentlemen, The Bronx Is Burning... and being transported back into that time in his life.  Kelly then asks Gabriel what gay life was like back in the day. Gabriel describes the streets of the West Village being filled with shirtless gay men dancing and having the best time on a random Tuesday night. He talks about how there was a feud between the East Village gay community and the West Village gay community. He talks about their differences, what it was like to have one foot in both, and he reflects on how his perception has changed since then.   Gabriel then talks a bit about his partner Hap, who passed during the Aids Epidemic. Gabriel had met Hap when he was studying abroad and just happened to run into each other when he moved to New York. Gabriel talked about how Hap showed him the ropes as a newly out man. He talks about how they dated until Hap's passing. Kelly talks about marching on Washington in support of the movement. Gabriel talks about how it inspired him to start Out Week Magazine, and how he invited outing! But above all else; Gabriel Rotello is a New Yorker! For many gay men, our relationship with our dad is one of the most defining- and least talked about. In this episode, we explore the nuances of our relationships with our fathers through three core questions: How did your dad react when you came out? How do you express your gayness around him today? Does being gay impact the level of intimacy you have with your dad? From there, we go deeper into family dynamics, cultural expectations, and the different expressions of love and acceptance between fathers and their gay sons. We get into physical affection between fathers and sons, how much access we give them into our lives, and the boundaries we set as adults. We also explore how these early relationships can shape the kinds of men we're attracted to… and the patterns we carry into dating and relationships. This is a grounded, honest conversation about the often complex and layered relationship between fathers and sons.  Today's Hosts: Matt Landsiedel Michael DiIorio - Take the 360° Self-Review for Gay Men Reno Johnston Support the Show - viewer and listener support helps us to continue making episodes - CONNECT WITH US - Watch podcast episodes on YouTube Join the Gay Men's Brotherhood Facebook community Get on our email list to get access to our monthly Zoom calls Follow us on Instagram | TikTok Learn more about our community at GayMenGoingDeeper.com - LEARN WITH US - Building Better Relationships online course: Learn how to nurture more meaningful and authentic connections with yourself and others. Bean modern without losing their core identity, and how they turned a viral internet meme into a massive, community-driven campaign for Chipotle. He breaks down why true authenticity is a brand's ultimate defense in the age of AI, how Day One's new editorial work helps clients navigate an increasingly complex cultural landscape and what the agency's signature "Day One Orange" says about their approach to fresh storytelling. campaignlive.com Music - Take you Out by Lucid Tides, courtesy of Triple Scoop. Finally, Louie and Nick break down Maroon 5's descent into the dregs of the pop machine that produced some truly unfortunate music but kept them, sometimes bafflingly, at the top of the charts through most of the 2010s and finally, rank the group in The Official Pop Pantheon.Check out our Maroon 5 Essentials PlaylistJoin Pop Pantheon: All Access, Our Patreon Channel, for Exclusive Content and MoreShop Merch in Pop Pantheon's StoreFollow Pop Pantheon on InstagramFollow DJ Louie XIV on InstagramFollow Russ on Instagram Hosted on Acast. After studying music business and releasing her debut EP, "Everything I Couldn't Say," Syd found her voice as both a singer and songwriter. When she's not teaching or working toward her master's degree in vocal performance, she's fronting a wedding band that performs across the East Coast and New York. This episode opens with a powerful breakdown of Donald Trump’s record‑shattering 2026 State of the Union address, which clocked in at approximately 1 hour and 48 minutes, making it the longest in modern U.S. history. Trump used the marathon speech to declare a “Golden Age,” emphasize economic gains, tout border crackdowns, and highlight national security moves—all while sparking tense clashes with Democrats in the chamber. The show then shifts to the entertainment world, where Tina Knowles publicly stood up for Tiny Harris amid 50 Cent and T.I.’s escalating feud. After 50 Cent posted an unflattering photo of Tiny, Knowles reposted a glam clip celebrating her “real feminine energy,” prompting 50 Cent to react online and intensify the drama that already had fans, celebrities, and family members weighing in. The crew also discusses Megan Thee Stallion joyfully manifesting engagement to NBA star Klay Thompson. While in Milan with Team USA athletes, Megan shared she’s “manifesting” a proposal, reflecting on how love found her during a season of personal healing and expressing excitement about her relationship’s future. Welcome back to The Rizzuto Show, the daily comedy show that asks the important questions — like what genre is your life, why are all malls dying, and how did a World War I artillery shell end up in a man's body? The crew kicks things off by breaking down life as a movie genre. Is Rizz living a straight-up comedy? Is Lern trapped in a rom-com she didn't audition for? Is Moon starring in an action movie with jokes sprinkled in? And is Scott legally obligated to live inside a spaghetti western forever? Spoiler: Rafe's life may be a psychological thriller directed by someone who should not be allowed near a camera. From there, the show takes a nostalgic (and slightly depressing) turn as Eddie Bauer officially joins the retail graveyard. The gang runs through dead mall staples like Borders, Blockbuster, KB Toys, Gadzooks, Sports Authority, and basically your entire childhood. Crestwood Mall gets a full eulogy, Mid Rivers Mall gets absolutely roasted, and everyone agrees: online shopping killed the food court vibes. Then it's Super Bowl chaos. Kid Rock vs. Bad Bunny, alternative halftime shows, cultural representation, and why people are still mad about Maroon 5 years later. The crew also ranks the worst halftime performances of all time, and yes — Adam Levine's shirt removal is still haunting America. In news you didn't know you needed, February is statistically the safest month to not get punched in the face. Science says cold weather equals fewer fights, which leads to personal punch histories, parking-lot ego confessions, and a shocking chair-throwing fail from Australia where a guy absolutely destroys his own friend instead of a bouncer. And just when you think it can't get more unhinged, doctors in France discover a World War I shell inside a patient, triggering a hospital evacuation and a bomb squad visit no one wanted. It's a public service announcement wrapped in a cautionary tale wrapped in “please stop putting stuff there.”The episode also dives into rising U.S. life expectancy (good news!), Branson magician crime headlines (very bad news), and a man attempting to spend an entire year locked in one room to “get healthy,” which the crew debates is either inspiring discipline or a live-streamed mental breakdown. It's another daily comedy show episode that somehow educates, horrifies, and entertains — often at the same time. It is a privilege to welcome actress and singer Kim Yarbrough back to The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar brand (and for the first time on the podcast) for the first time in 14 years!   Many Reality TV fans first saw Kim Yarbrough audition for The Voice USA: Season Two in Spring 2012. Her powerful interpretation of Chaka Khan's “Tell Me Something Good” turned both founding coaches' chairs, Adam Levine and Christina Aguilera, around.  After joining Team Adam, Kim wowed the audience with her cover of Mary J. Blige's “No More Drama” and advanced to the Season Two Live Playoffs.  During The Voice: Season Two Live Playoffs, she sang Adele's “Rolling in the Deep” but fell into the Bottom Three.  After delivering a superb, powerful cover of Jennifer Hudson's “Spotlight,” the Maroon 5 frontman chose to advance Kim's then teammate, Katrina Parker, to the Top 16.  After her appearance on the NBC talent competition, Al Roker, Hoda Kotb, and Kathie Lee Gifford interviewed her on Today, and she sang with the Roots on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. Over the years, Kim dove deep into the entertainment industry.
