Solo a veces.

After growing up in Spain and a brief stint as an extra on DOCTOR ZHIVAGO, Mark worked in commercials in New York City before finding his way into the Directors Guild of America's Assistant Directing training program. Mark later survived William Friedkin's globe-trotting production of SORCERER, emerging from the dirt and mud having risen to the position of 2nd AD, and eventually broke into producing with director Barry Levinson's DINER. During our discussion, we learn how Mark finds projects to produce and what he looks for in projects brought to him. Mark also reflects on the varying styles of directors and how he personally defines the responsibilities of a producer. We also learn how Mark shepherded GALAXY QUEST (a favourite of ours) into existence, and he shares a number of insights into the journey of its development, production, and release. We later learn how Mark first met writer Vince Gilligan and of their long-term professional relationship that led Mark to producing BREAKING BAD and BETTER CALL SAUL, and he reflects on the differences between working in television versus film. Mark is responsible for introducing us to director Denis Villeneuve before we worked together on PRISONERS, and it was a pleasure to be able to catch up with him in this episode.  - This episode is sponsored by Aputure

Through the medium of Boris Pasternak's novel, Dr Zhivago, Peter takes us on a nostalgic journey through the political upheavals that occurred within Russian society a little over a century ago, as Communists wrestled power from Czarist Russia. Peter's address focuses on the despair caused when ideals for a better, fairer, more equitable society fall short of expectations. Peter uses the plots and sub-plots within Dr Zhivago, and the life of its author, Nobel Laureate - Boris Pasternak, to dramatise how Czarist hegemony was replaced with one under the guise of "Communism" - but falling well short of the Marxist ideal. Alas, poor Russia! The nightmare of Zhivago continues, much to Russia's, its neighbours' - and the rest of the World's cost. Perhaps Russia's greatest fear has always been its fear of itself: our greatest enemy is always the "enemy within". The exercise of power must also come with liberties: checks and balances that allow dissent to be heard and injustices resolved peacefully and fairly. Peter's address closes with Janet's reading of Pasternak's hope that "The Power of the darkness, will - in time - be crushed by the Spirit of Light". And today we are bathed in the light of Barry and Brendan's playing of three of Dvorak's short romantic sonatas for violin and piano. And Boris smiled!

Bunny is in the seaside garden of Anna Pasternak. Anna is well known as a journalist and author.  Anna had the privilege of growing up in a Gertrude Jekyll garden as a child, and loves gardens with different spaces or rooms within them.  One of Anna's favourite plants is lilac, as they were her great uncle, Boris Pasternak's favourite. Boris Pasternak won a Noble Prize for his book ‘Dr Zhivago'.  Anna wrote a book ‘Lara: The Untold Love Story that Inspired Doctor Zhivago”, the book revealed for the first time the critical role played by Olga Ivinskaya (Boris's mistress) in his life, and argues that without Olga it is likely that Doctor Zhivago would never have been completed or published. Anna has also authored “Princess in Love” (about Diana and James Hewitt) and ‘Untitled:The Real Wallis Simpson'. Her mission is to write books that rehabilitate women whom history has treated unfairly.   For her present, Bunny took Anna a little known plant, Aloysia polystachya, which can be used to make a delicious herbal tea that  has been proven to help relieve anxiety.

We follow that up with Beyonce deciding to drop Act 2 of her Renaissance offering's, right after Usher's Football concert at the Super Bowl, because Beyonce can do whatever she likes mmmkay. There's so much to discuss, we start with Usher's efforts centre stage, but then quickly pivot to Beyonce, with a side quest into playing ‘Okay, Stop!' with the trailer for the upcoming movie of the Broadway musical ‘Wicked'. There's much more Beyonce discussion to follow, with cameos from Tina Knowles, Meryl Streep, Jay Z and even some “will Travis Kelce be in Australia with Taylor Swift” chat too. SynopsisToday's date in 1946 marks an important moment in Parisian theatrical history with the debut performance of a legendary acting company created by husband-and-wife actors Jean-Louis Barrault and Madeleine Renaud. Their opening production was Shakespeare's Hamlet in a French translation by André Gide, with incidental music by Swiss composer Arthur Honegger. To play Honegger's score, Barrault hired two young musicians at the start of their careers. The first, 21, was to play the eerie electronic sounds Honegger scored for the Ondes Martinon, evoking the elder Hamlet's ghost. That young musician was a composition student named Pierre Boulez, who would remain associated with Barrault's company for a decade before becoming a famous conductor and composer of avant-garde scores of his own like Le Marteau Sans Maître. The second musician Barrault hired was a 22-year old percussionist, who brought Hamlet to a dramatic close with timpani crescendos evoking Fortinbras' final line in the play, “Go, bid the soldiers shoot.” That young musician, Maurice Jarre, would also become a famous composer, taking quite a different career path than Boulez. Jarre devoted himself to film scoring, composing several famous ones, such as Dr. Zhivago for British film director David Lean.Music Played in Today's ProgramPierre Boulez (1925 - 2016) – Le Marteau Sans Maître (Orchestre Du Domaine Musical; Pierre Boulez, cond.) After taking a few weeks to allow the loss of my wife Snoopy (8/15/56) to sink in fully, I'm back on the air with this latest in The Two Kens series because I trusted my good friend and fellow podcasters Ken Kemp to prompt me to talk about how I'm grieving and how we're planning to give her a moving sendoff in early August. Her memorial service will be livestreamed on EBCLA's YouTube channel on Aug 12th @ 10AM. If you've been on this journey with us, I think you'll experience a great amount of closure by tuning in live or by watching the recording of the service or the two videos of her life that I'm creating. I'll probably post her videos on both my personl and podcast FB pages.
