Sir Ernest Shackleton became a national icon after venturing on four epic voyages of discovery to the Antarctic a century ago, including the famous HMS Endurance expedition. But after the Endurance was trapped by pack ice—and slowly succumbed to its crushing pressure—the expedition's fate, and that of its crew, looked bleak. Hundreds of miles from inhabited territory, and far from any shipping lanes, what followed is one of the greatest stories of endurance and survival ever told. The crew wouldn't be rescued for more than a year and a half, but incredibly all 28 made it back alive. More than a century later, the wreck of the Endurance was finally located. In March 2022, a team of scientists released stunning images of the three-masted, wooden ship where it had lodged 10,000 feet deep at the bottom of the Antarctic. Our speaker is leading polar historian Michael Smith, who books have received wide critical acclaim and he is assisting with the development of a major international film about Shackleton.

Martin shares how his journey has shaped his understanding of different cultures and leadership.  04:24 The Role of History in Leadership  Martin discusses how historical insights can inform contemporary challenges, particularly in leadership and management. He emphasizes the necessity of understanding history to navigate present issues effectively.  07:06 Lessons from the Past  The conversation shifts to how past solutions have created today's problems, with Martin referencing the Industrial Revolution and its consequences. He highlights the importance of learning from history to find modern solutions.  10:11 The Optimism of Youth  Bill and Martin reflect on the idealism of younger generations regarding climate change and sustainability. They discuss how engaging with young people can inspire hope for the future.  14:02 The Qualities of Great Leaders Martin shares insights on the characteristics of effective leaders, emphasizing their ability to envision possibilities that others cannot see. He contrasts this with the qualities of less favorable leaders.  16:11 Reevaluating Historical Figures  The discussion turns to notable historical figures, with Martin expressing a preference for lesser-known leaders who have made significant impacts. He critiques the common narratives surrounding famous leaders like Thomas Jefferson.  20:04 Unseen Leaders and Their Impact  Martin elaborates on the contributions of unseen leaders, using the example of Vasily Archipov during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He illustrates how individual actions can alter the course of history.  27:01 Churchill: The Crisis Manager  Explore Winston Churchill's complex legacy as a leader during World War II, where he was thrust into a crisis not of his making. This chapter delves into the nuances of his leadership style, contrasting crisis management with the ability to foresee and avoid crises.  35:12 The Unseen Leader: Shackleton vs. Amundsen  Martin Gutmann discusses the concept of the ‘unseen leader' through the lens of explorers Shackleton and Amundsen. While Shackleton's dramatic story captivates audiences, Amundsen's meticulous planning and authentic leadership provide deeper lessons in effective leadership.  42:55 The Challenge of Leadership in Media  In this chapter, the conversation shifts to the media's portrayal of leadership, emphasizing how crises and scandals often overshadow the quiet, effective leaders. Martin and Bill reflect on the disparity between public admiration for dramatic leaders versus those who exemplify humility and competence.  46:26 A Global Perspective on Leadership  Martin shares his insights on the political climate in Europe and how it resonates with the current events in the U.S. He discusses the resilience of democratic institutions and the importance of good leadership amidst rising concerns about political extremism.  50:01 Optimism in the Next Generation  Ending on a hopeful note, Martin reflects on the optimism he sees in younger generations, highlighting their ability to dream big without the constraints of cynicism. This chapter underscores the importance of nurturing this optimism as a counterbalance to the challenges faced in today's world.

After some current events about dire wolves, dire outbreaks of measles, and dire science denial in the White House, we discuss some true (and some not-so-true) tales of people surviving dire circumstances. People have come back alive from the frigid ice of Antarctica, a shipwreck on the bottom of the sea, and the deep jungles of South America. Others have claimed to have survived well-known disasters but been found out as frauds. And still another category intrigues us . . . survivors that never were. In fairy tales from 500 years ago and in earthquakes today, sometimes we humans have a deep psychological need to find hope in the face of disaster and believe that a small child has somehow miraculously survived.

(RV1960)

Kiwi musician Blair Jollands has made a name for himself overseas. He works as a sound designer and composer in the film industry, as well as creating and releasing his own music. Jollands has a wide range of film credits, but some of the most popular he left his mark on are Poldark, Shackleton, Midas Man, and Alien vs Predator. He's worked with a wide range of stars, including Madonna and Rhianna, and won praise from the late David Bowie and Boy George. ‘Little Comet' is his fourth album, which he recently released under his own name after performing under the pseudonym ‘El Hula'. Jollands left New Zealand in 1995, spending awhile in the United States before winding up in the UK, where he's remained since. He told Mike Hosking that getting a job in sound design at the time was very much a right time, right place situation. “I was a coffee barista, and I thought y'know, I really need to get something that pays a little bit more to help my music along.” “So I actually walked in and gave them my CV, and a week later they said ‘will you come in because we had three people just, they've been headhunted and they've gone to another studio.'” Although sound design and music production may seem like different areas, Jolland says these days the line between them is really fine. “For example, the late Jóhann Jóhannsson, for say, his movie ‘Sicario', it's, I find it very hard to establish what is music and what is sound design – it's very tonal, it's not as harmonic, less melodic.” “But generally speaking, sound design is more organic, and we capture sounds and manipulate them.” LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Explorer Felicity Ashton recounts her  solo skiing expedition across Antarctica,  explaining exploration for her and many others is not  merely  a choice but a fundamental need.   “It took me a long time to realize that not everybody has that same itch to go. There's a commonality amongst all the explorers that I've written about is that, largely, it's not their choice. They're not deciding, ‘Oh, I'm going to do this.’ It's almost taken out of their control. They have to go and do it. There is no other option.”  Growing up, there was nothing in Felicity Ashton’s childhood or DNA to suggest that she’d become an explorer or the first woman to ski solo across Antarctica – perhaps because none of the explorers she had read about, looked anything like her.  “Most of the explorers we were taught about at school were men, for a start, and men at the opposite end of the 20th century who had very little in common with me or the way that I saw the world, and probably would have no understanding of why a woman would want to go and do these things.”  Throughout her journey, Ashton experienced both failures and successes – each time coming away with new experiences and life lessons. Central to these lessons is the importance  of staying curious while being able to balance the risks with the thrill of adventure.  “It's a really tough decision to make whenever you're out in the field of where is that line between adventure and madness? When is the moment to push beyond all reason and when is the point to go? Now we need to fall back. And this is where we get to the famous quote from Shackleton: ‘I would rather be a live donkey than a dead lion.’”  In her book Life Lessons From Explorers: Learn how to weather life’s storms from history’s greatest explorers,  Ashton shares how she weathered storms, dealt with isolation, and found the motivation to keep  herself going. She also  includes anecdotes and stories from the Vikings to David Livingston, Shackelton to Amelia Ehrhardt. “Often what history records and what we see on the surface is not an accurate representation of the true story, and the truth is probably far more similar to what we ourselves have experienced throughout our lives than we care to admit.”

Today, McKay talks all about action on the podcast, starting off the episode by recounting Ernest Shackleton's 1914 expedition to Antarctica. After two years of combatting ice, cold temperatures, and the ocean, Shackleton finally managed to save his team and bring them home. McKay attributes his unlikely success to his willingness to move and set his plans into action, and points out that many of us overthink far too much and are paralyzed by our thoughts. To overcome our overthinking, action is the best remedy - making moves, changing our thought processes, and cultivating what McKay calls our emotional homes are key to success.During the latter half of this episode, McKay introduces Larry Lemieux, an Olympic sailor who made the heroic decision to forfeit his pursuit of the gold medal to save his competitors drowning in the water. It was his quick action skills that made this move possible - he didn't overthink. Likewise, McKay draws this episode to conclusion by detailing Sarah Lift's decision to leave her abusive household at the age of 15. He says that her fast acting, like that of Lemieux, changed her life and led her down a path to emotional freedom and financial success. Listen in today as McKay demonstrates that, truly, “there is power in moving and keeping your focus on the next necessary part of your life's journey.”The Finer Details of This Episode:Ernest Shackleton's 1914 mission to Antarctica Why overthinking is a bad habit Why action assuages overthinkingThe importance of a healthy emotional homeLarry Lemieux's heroic move at the OlympicsSara Lift's decision to leave her abusive householdQuotes:“We let habitual thinking freeze us from time to time, and the way out of our situation, or to safety or success, just might be to move. Action is a powerful force, not only in our life, but in our minds.”“The problem with overthinking is it can become a habit, and soon we get hung up on relatively simple decisions. We worry excessively, our mind tends to go into overdrive, and we even begin to think about our thinking.”“Overthinking can prevent us from taking action by keeping us trapped in circular thoughts. When we overthink, we may be unable to separate facts and what we know for sure from the worries we keep telling ourselves.”“You can't start the next chapter of your life if you keep rereading your last one.”“Overthinking plagues many of us, and we can change the rumination going on in our life and our thinking by focusing on what's next.”“Stand guard at the door of your mind. Lucille Shackleton is a sexologist and relationship therapist who has just released her debut book titled “All In”. When Lucille was working with couples as a therapist, most of the training that she had done said ‘if the friendship is good the sex will be good’ but this didn’t seem to be the case in practice. So Lucille went and did a masters of sexology to figure out what some of the missing pieces to the ‘good sex’ puzzle were. One particular puzzle piece that we wanted to unpack with Lucille was how much conflict affected libido and desire. We unpack: The love lust split Why referring to your partner as ‘mummy’ or ‘daddy’ (not in that way) can make you both stop desiring each other The question of ‘do you not want sex?’ or ‘are you not having sex that you actually want?’ Figuring out your sex values Relationship satisfaction goes up when people learn that their ‘problems’ are normal, even if they aren’t having more sex The ‘narratives’ that we create about our partners & ‘core negative’ images Does intention matter when it comes to conflict? Real-life stories of grisly crimes have always had a primal pull on our collective imagination. It's now axiomatic that if there's anything that sells better than sex, it's true crime. In the last decade, the genre has blown up into a media behemoth, with more and more cliffhanger podcasts, television shows, and documentaries released each year, spinning murders and mysteries into engrossing narratives. Yet these stories also raise uncomfortable questions—about the role of the media in criminal justice, the objectivity of nonfiction filmmaking, and our voyeuristic fascination that fuels this phenomenon. At this year's Sundance Film Festival, Film Comment Editor Devika Girish moderated a conversation with three nonfiction filmmakers from the festival's lineup whose works question and subvert the expectations of the true-crime mode: Charlie Shackleton (Zodiac Killer Project), David Osit (Predators), and Geeta Gandhbir (The Perfect Neighbor). The panelists explored the origins and popularity of the true-crime trend, and its implications for both audiences and media-makers.
