Barbara Hannah Grufferman, nationally recognized author of “Love Your Age: The Small-Step Solution to a Better, Longer, Happier Life”, shares her strategies for early diagnosis of and customized treatments for osteoporosis. As an NOF board member and author, Barbara is passionate about both healthy aging and osteoporosis education. It is estimated that nearly half of all women over age 50 will break a bone due to the effects of osteoporosis. What makes the disease so elusive is that no symptoms appear until a sufferer fractures a bone. The good news is that osteoporosis is generally preventable and, for those with the diagnosis, treatable. In this latest postcast, Barbara offers invaluable advice that, regardless of whether you suffer from osteoporosis or simply want to reduce your risk, can help each of us protect our ability to live our best life.

10 million Americans have osteoporosis and many more may be at risk of developing the bone disease. Learn the risk factors and what you can do to help improve your bone health. Barbara Hannah Grufferman, a nationally recognized expert on healthy and positive aging shares her tips to achieving a healthy and happy life. This May, she has teamed up with Women In Government, a national, non-profit, non-partisan organization of women state legislators for National Osteoporosis Month. Together, they hope to help raise awareness about bone heath and let everyone know it's never too early to learn the basics to bone health. • One in two women and up to one in four men over the age of 50 will break a bone during their lifetime because of osteoporosis • For women, the chances of breaking a bone are greater than that of a heart attack, stroke and breast cancer combined • According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, bone breaks due to the disease are most likely to occur in the hip, spine or wrist. The disease may also cause some patients to lose height. When osteoporosis affects vertebrae, or the bones of the spine, it often leads to a stooped or hunched posture • Peak bone mass usually happens between the ages of 18 and 25. Bone loss often speeds up in both men and women as they age Barbara Hannah Grufferman is the author of the new book, "Love Your Age - The Small-Step Solution to a Better, Longer, Happier Life." www.barbarahannahgrufferman.com Women In Government has provided leadership opportunities, networking, expert forums, and educational resources for 30 years on policy issues such as healthcare, education, energy, the environment, transportation, and more. BARBARA GRUFFERMAN is an acclaimed advocate for positive living and healthy aging.  She is a regular contributor to the Huffington Post and author of the new Best Selling Book, Love Your Age~the small step solution to better, longer, happier life.  The book is published by National Geographic and partner AARP.  Barbara shares her philosophy about creating new and positive habits.  All roads lead to movement and exercise. We are our habits and good habits will help us live a happier, fuller life.  You don’t have to have a rigorous exercise regime. Just get up and move!! She did not really start making healthy habits a priority until 50.  It was then she began paying attention and determined she wanted her body to feel as good as her spirit and become the ambassador for health she is today.  Start by putting one foot in front of the other and before you know it, you too may be running marathons...or NOT! All kidding aside, we all have to find a way to keep ourselves moving.  We discuss the affects and well being that comes from getting out in nature, whether bird watching or a walk in the park. Barbara talks about her role as Bone Ambassador and we discuss sex and the importance of “rebooting your sexual relationship.”  We dive into the changes we are experiencing as women and thoughts on Hormone Replacement Therapy. Are you using Retinol at night? She has left nothing out of her book as it relates to the topics we women want to discuss. Her book acts as a “daily dose,” of valuable information to inspire and point us in the right direction.  Love your Age is a must read if you are 40 or over and want to live your best life!   Barbara has appeared on many shows including the Today Show, Dr. Phil, The Doctors, Kelly and Ryan Live and Good Morning America and lives in NYC.     Her Book:   Book, Love Your Age: The Small-Step Solution to a better, longer, happier life. I met our next guest on the set of NBC’s Today Show a few years ago when we did a segment with Kathie Lee Gifford & Hoda Kotb about relatively easy tests of your agility, flexibility, & memory you could do at home which might indicate that a trip to the doctor was in order. . .and another one in which we discussed a survey which documented the “Germiest places in your home”.  Spoiler alert:  it wasn’t the bathroom, but the kitchen!  Barbara Grufferman was such a pleasure to work with and chat with, that I couldn’t wait to have her on this podcast. And now that she has her newest book out, we have the perfect excuse!  The book -- Love Your Age: The Small-Step Solution to a Better, Longer, Happier Life (National Geographic) -- launched in February and has been getting rave reviews, but most importantly, it will be our Facebook Live Show “Book of the Week” this coming Wed! Very few authors can say that!
