Counting Crows frontman Adam Duritz explains how his songwriting process has changed over the years, and offers insights into some of his songs, from early classics to recent compositions. PART ONE:Paul and Scott discuss judging a book by its cover and their possible status as idiots. PART TWO:Our in-depth conversation with Adam DuritzABOUT ADAM DURITZ:Songwriter Adam Duritz is best known as the lead singer of Counting Crows, which formed in 1991 in the San Francisco Bay area. Their 1993 debut album, August and Everything After, which was produced by T. Bone Burnett, attracted attention for songs such as “Mr. Jones,” “Round Here,” and “Rain King.” The album earned the group two Grammy nominations and was certified seven-times platinum. The double platinum follow-up album, Recovering the Satellites, reached number one and produced the top 10 pop single “A Long December.” Subsequent #1 singles on Billboard's AAA chart include “American Girls” with Sheryl Crow, “She Don't Want Nobody Near,” “Accidentally in Love” from Shrek 2 (which earned them an Academy Award nomination), and “You Can't Count on Me” and “Come Around” from the band's fifth album, Saturday Nights & Sunday Mornings. In 2021 Counting Crows reached #2 on the AAA chart with “Elevator Boots” from their EP Butter Miracle, Suite One. Their eighth studio album, Butter Miracle, The Complete Sweets!, will be released this Friday, May 9. You'll hear clips of some of the new songs during our conversation, but to hear others Adam discusses, such as “With Love, From A-Z” and “Boxcars,” you'll have to wait a few days for the new album. In all, the band has sold over 20 million albums and established themselves as vibrant live performers who often put a fresh spin on the recorded versions of their classic songs.

"And the man on the cuts! Twice as nice with the slice...his name ain't Tommy...but he's my boy!"Yes, that's right. You can find stuff to listen to on Spotify, Apple, YouTube, Amazon, Pandora, and Deezer, and -- while you're pokin' around -- make sure to give 2022's Suburbs a listen.I really enjoyed getting to chat with Dylan. We talked a little bit about family and growing up, being part of a band that's been both together and homeboys for decades, and we also talked about the process of writing, recording, and producing an album. Not lost in the mix was a little segment about a few of Dylan's favorite albums, which were these:Van Morrison's Astral Weeks (1968)August & Everything After (1992), Counting CrowsBen Folds Five's self-titled (1995)Rain or Shine (2010), O.A.R.Lana Del Ray's Norman Fucking Rockwell! (2019)Talking with Dylan was educational and entertaining. He seems to have that "it" button, and I wish him nothing but the best with both his current and future projects. If you're in KC, I think you can catch him at The Pour House Friday evenings. Check him out.Thank you to Dylan for his time, and thank you to all of you that support the show.Cheers.copyright disclaimer: I do not own the rights to the audio samples contained within this episode. They are samples taken from a Widespread Panic single from this year (!) called, "Blue Carousel" c/o Widespread Records. I mean, I have always loved me some Widespread, and -- while this tune's riff sounds a lot like the initial heartbeat of "Greta," I had to tag it and show them some love.

Prior to releasing some of the most memorable songs to come out of the 90's, San Francisco's Counting Crows were subject to a major-label bidding war, thanks in part to something rather unheard of in the industry: a massive, 15-song demo tape. Not only did this show a deep well for vocalist and lead songwriter Adam Duritz to pull from, but this prototype already came with early versions of future bonafide hits like "Mr. Jones" and "Round Here." To an alt-rock audience who didn't necessarily grow up with Van Morrison, The Band or R.E.M., Adam and company filled that void and then some, with their first three albums selling over 10 million copies between them. Today, Adam spills why their upcoming co-headlining tour with Dashboard Confessional has been 20 years in the making, which records he spun every morning while recording the band's landmark debut album August and Everything After, and how that title track (which never made the original 1993 release) is now finally available, specifically for vinyl lovers. In this episode, host Barbara Hannah Grufferman shares what she learned from interviewing the world-famous relationship expert, Esther Perel, about how to reignite your sex life by just making a few simple shifts in how you think about your body, your relationships, and sex. Esther Perel is the author of the best-selling book, Mating in Captivity, which Barbara has been recommending to her readers and listeners for over ten years. According to Esther, a key expert Barbara interviewed for her chapter on sex in The Best of Everything After 50, it's all about the willingness to engage, which can lead to desire, which often leads to arousal, which brings you to the experience. Couples who have a good sex thing going -- even after many years of being together or if they've just started dating -- take time to figure out what they need to do to make it happen. Whatever it is, they know what it takes to make the transition from the work or domestic life to the erotic life, and they make planning a huge part of the erotic journey. This can be especially challenging for couples who have been together for a while, causing things to get a bit stale in the bedroom. Add to the mix the negative sexual impact many common drugs (for cholesterol, hypertension, and so on) can have on the libido of both men and women, the physical complaints women often have during and after menopause (dryness) which can make sex less comfortable, and the constant stream of externals such as jobs, children, parents and so on. It's not exactly conducive to swinging from chandeliers. But, according to Esther, there are ways to get your sex life back on track. Tune in to Part 1 of “Better Sex at Any Age” today and stay tuned for Part 2 next week.
