You know I talk about longevity all the time, right? It's something I'm genuinely working toward every single day, being healthy and vibrant well into my later years. And I credit a lot of my thinking around this to reading books and watching documentaries that completely changed my perspective on aging. So the other day, I was scrolling Instagram (as you do) and came across this wild ChatGPT prompt about living to 140. When AI analyzed centenarian populations in Blue Zones — regions like Okinawa, Sardinia, and Costa Rica — it didn't point to Mediterranean diets or daily walks as the key factor. The surprising answer? Managing chronic stress matters more than anything else for longevity. In this episode, I'm diving into seven principles that came from this analysis, and honestly, they resonated so deeply with how I already try to live. These aren't abstract concepts for decades from now, they're shifts you can make today that actually matter.Because one line really hit me hard: so many people wait their whole lives to truly live, and by the time they give themselves permission, their body has already paid the price. What You'll Learn:Why chronic stress (not diet or genetics) is the biggest threat to longevity and how to identify hidden stressors in your lifeWhy living out of alignment with your true self keeps your body in constant survival modeThe power of social connection and why loneliness is as dangerous as smoking 15 cigarettes a dayHow to find your "ikigai"— your reason for getting up each morning that can add 7 years to your lifespanHow to stop postponing joy until “retirement” and start living now Hosted on Acast. Jennifer Roig-Francolí shares her journey from a young violinist finding solace in her art, to a place of spiritual exploration and self-discovery. We discuss the challenges she faced in her artistic life, including a pivotal moment when she realized she was not using her creativity in a healthy way, and the profound neck pain that changed her path. Through the Alexander Technique, Jennifer found not just relief from her physical discomfort, but also a new way to reconnect with her creativity. Jennifer discusses her creative childhood, Suzuki training and meteoric run of competitions and solo work, before the ambition dissolved, orchestra life set in, and her relationship with music dimmed. When no treatment could alleviate her stubborn neck pain, a friend urged Jennifer to revisit the Alexander Technique. Within a few lessons, the pain vanished and something deeper shifted – mood, movement, and a sense of ease that didn't require effort.Together, we unpack what Alexander work actually is beyond posture, and Jennifer shares a simple on-air exercise that anyone can try in seconds, demonstrating how noticing without fixing often melts strain and steadies the voice. Jennifer is the creator of the Art of Freedom Method built around five pillars – purpose, mind, body, spirit, artistry – to help musicians and non-musicians create from presence rather than pressure, and author of Make Great Music with Ease: The Secret to Smarter Practice, Confident Performance, and Living a Happier Life.Find out more about The Art of Freedom and Jennifer herecreativityfound.co.ukResearched, edited and produced by Claire Waite BrownMusic: Day Trips by Ketsa Undercover / Ketsa Creative Commons License Free Music Archive - Ketsa - Day TripsAffordably advertise on this podcast by emailing claire@creativityfound.co.uk, or book a call here. Dan Buettner, the discoverer of the Blue Zones, has spent decades studying the longevity factors of the longest-living populations around the globe — they naturally move frequently, eat largely a plant-based diet, have a strong sense of purpose, and are connected to community, to name a few. Another factor that can be a challenge to measure but is no less important is happiness. In this episode, Buettner shares the learnings we can all apply to live longer, happier lives. He also discusses the power of a whole-foods, plant-focused diet on longevity, including insights from his new book, Blue Zones Kitchen: One Pot Meals, 100 Recipes to Live to 100. Why are BDSM practitioners so happy? It turns out, BDSM isn't just about whips and chains. With engaging stories and a warm, conversational tone, Bound by BDSM: Unexpected Lessons for Building a Happier Life (Bloomsbury Acacdemic, 2025) by Dr. Alicia M. Walker and Dr. Arielle Kuperberg reveals how BDSM practitioners use clear boundaries, enthusiastic consent, open dialogue, and a strong community to create fulfilling relationships and build richer, more intentional lives. Drawing on research from the largest scientific study of BDSM ever conducted, Alicia Walker and Arielle Kuperberg demonstrate that the BDSM community's approach to trust and vulnerability offers a valuable model for building intimacy and fostering authentic connections. BDSM also allows practitioners to exercise their creativity and break the mold - whether it comes to trying out new practices in the bedroom or bending ideas about gender.Whether you're vanilla, kinky, or just here for the life advice, this book -packed with humor and insight-is a refreshingly open-minded guide to building stronger relationships, deeper intimacy, and a more intentional approach to connection. Michael O. Johnston, Ph.D. is a Assistant Professor of Sociology at William Penn University. He is the author of The Social Construction of a Cultural Spectacle: Floatzilla (Lexington Books, 2023) and Community Media Representations of Place and Identity at Tug Fest: Reconstructing the Mississippi River (Lexington Books, 2022). Laughter! That's the focus of today's meander, as we explore the third last chapter in Martha Beck's book, “The Joy Diet: 10 daily practices for a happier life.” We visit a laughter yoga class from 2023 on Australia's sunshine coast and hear from two laughter yoga teachers about the benefits of such a thing. There's good science behind it too, that Beck explores in the book. I hope you'll have a read of that, and explore her invitation to increase your quotient of laughs per day.Feel free to share your thoughts with me at meanderingswithtrudy@gmail.com. Welcome to episode 106. In this episode, we explore the connection between trauma and neurodivergence, looking at why neurodivergent people are often more vulnerable—even to experiences others might not view as traumatic. Living in a world that isn't designed for our brains can add to that sense of overwhelm, so this episode is a gentle reminder of the power of self-forgiveness, self-kindness, and how seeking trauma-informed support - no matter your background or experiences – can lead to healing and a happier life. Let's dive in. In this episode: The definition of trauma, and how everyday overwhelm puts neurodivergent people at greater risk. The impact of trauma on body and mind – How it can manifest as chronic pain, illness, or anxiety – not just emotional pain. The power of self-forgiveness – How releasing self-blame creates space for healing, self-advocacy, and accessing trauma-informed support. Creativity is this week's focus in chapter 4 of “The Joy Diet.” I found this chapter really helpful and I encourage you to grab a pen and a piece of paper so you too can work through the exercises she offers. She doesn't as much talk about creativity as much as invite you into a few practices that help you explore yours, in relation to the desire you may have articulated in the previous chapter. We're always told to live our best lives, but what does that really mean? In this book, coach Beck introduces us to the 10 daily practices that she believes will help us live more joy-filled lives. We're on chapter three, which dives into finding your heart's desire.Today, I meander with you from the hot tub, the site of my daily meditation practice. Truth be told, I've been struggling with this week's practice on Desire. I had a whole script written, but instead, by instinct, I set it aside and just spoke from my heart. You'll hear the hiss from the hot tub's filtre for a while, then the sound of the wind brushing the mic and the birds tweeting in the background. It's all real, I promise you! After that, I share with you what I have learned about stillness and how it has applied in my life. I keep coming back to this first practice as it is just that pivotal. Then we turn to the book and the topic of desire and how I have worked with that practice. I'm hoping you are reading along and so will learn also from Martha Beck herself as I stray a bit away from her work in this meander, and into my experience with it. I hope you'll enjoy this episode. Please, share my work widely, and give the podcast a review to tease the algorithms. If you have comments or questions, please send them to: meanderingswithtrudy@gmail.com. Longevity isn't just about adding years to life—it's about adding life to those years. At the heart of lasting vitality are the often-overlooked essentials: deep social connection, a clear sense of purpose, and a mindset filled with optimism. These emotional and relational foundations are just as critical as what's happening inside the body. Thanks to emerging diagnostics and the growing field of functional and longevity medicine, we now have the ability to detect subtle shifts in biology—long before symptoms arise—giving us the chance to course-correct with personalized strategies. By combining cutting-edge science with time-tested lifestyle practices like nourishing food, regular movement, restful sleep, and meaningful relationships, we can not only slow the aging process but begin to reverse it—unlocking a future where growing older means growing stronger, wiser, and more vibrant. In this episode, I explore, along with Peter Diamandis and Dr. Jeffrey Bland the keys to living a longer, healthier life by combining cutting-edge longevity science with the power of mindset, purpose, and meaningful connection. Peter Diamandis is the founder and executive chairman of the XPRIZE Foundation, which leads the world in designing and operating large-scale incentive competitions. He was recently named by Fortune as one of the “World's 50 Greatest Leaders.” He is also the executive founder of Singularity University, a graduate-level Silicon Valley institution that counsels the world's leaders on exponentially growing technologies. Dr. Jeff Bland is the founder of Big Bold Health, a company on a mission to transform the way people think about one of nature's greatest innovations—the immune system. Through Big Bold Health, Dr. Bland is advocating for the power of Immuno-Rejuvenation to enhance immunity at a global level, often through the rediscovery of ancient food crops and superfoods. To get there, he is building a network of small farms and suppliers throughout the US that take a clear stance on regenerative agriculture, environmental stewardship, and planetary health. Dr. Bland's career in health spans more than 40 years. A nutritional biochemist by training, he began in academia as a university professor. He then spent three decades in the natural products industry, working alongside other pioneers. A lifelong educator, Dr. Bland has traveled the world many times over in his role as the “father of functional medicine.” In 1991, he and his wife, Susan, founded The Institute for Functional Medicine. In 2012, he founded another educational nonprofit called the Personalized Lifestyle Medicine Institute. Dr. Bland is the author of The Disease Delusion: Conquering the Causes of Chronic Illness for a Healthier, Longer, and Happier Life, as well as countless additional books and research papers. Ashley Whillans has spent years studying how time, money, and workplace culture shape our well-being. They explore urgency culture, the myth of work-life balance, and the tradeoffs we make without realizing it.Ashley Whillans is a professor at Harvard Business School and the author of Time Smart. Her research has been featured in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and Harvard Business Review. In this episode, Dart and Ashley discuss:- How time poverty affects performance and well-being- Why leaders should care about how their teams spend time- The limits of traditional perks - How to shift from burnout to sustainability- Why work-life balance is a myth—and what matters more- What “time affluence” really means- And other topics…Ashley Whillans is the Volpert Family Associate Professor of Business Administration at Harvard Business School. Her work focuses on how people spend their time and money—and how those choices shape happiness and success. She is the author of Time Smart, a book that helps people reclaim time in a world that constantly steals it.
