EP 35:  Mistakes I've Made So You Don't Have To I don't believe that you need to fall down to know that it hurts. I don't believe that you need to make a mistake to learn from one. I believe that we can learn from each others mistakes and stumbles and falls. That's why I'm sharing a whole bunch of my mistakes in the hope that doing so will keep you from making the same gaffes. Some of these mistakes are seemingly obvious ones. Well, the obvious mistakes are obvious because they happen the most. The vast majority of mess ups that I share are directly related to running . Some are tangentially related. And there's even one that's just a grooming mistake. But there is no need for any of you to make that mistake either. I hope you enjoy the episode and have some fun at my expense. And if this episode helps you have better runs or keeps a goatee off your face... then I've done my job.  Cheers,Coach Bennett(0:00) Intro(2:34) You don't need to run on ice. I've done it. (6:50) You don't need to do a beer mile or chocolate milk mile. I did both. (10:30) I've run with a phone in my hand... you shouldn't do that(13:40) Don't run in shoes that don't fit. I've done it. (17:13) You don't need to not have toilet paper when you need it. (19:40) You don't need to run a race you shouldn't run. I did. (23:35) Don't tell yourself you can't race because you're not in great shape. I did that. (25:52) Don't run in a thunderstorm. Idiots do that. I did that. I was an idiot. (27:39) You don't need to hang out in the sun unprotected for hours. I did it. It sucks. (32:21) I've run when I was sick. I've run when I was hurt. You don't need to do that. (34:47) You don't need to have a goatee. Ever. I had one once. It was a disaster. (36:32) Don't eat a pepperoni stromboli the night before an early morning race.(38:45) Thought I could get hydrated during a run. I couldn't. You probably can't either. (40:14) I used to say I hated running. It wasn't true and it hurt my running. Don't do that.Be sure to send any and all questions and comments to the mailbag: Coach Bennett's Podcast 9220 SW Barbur Blvd STE 119, #322 Portland, Oregon 97219 And if you need even more Coach Bennett in your life you can scratch that itch by subscribing to the Coach Bennett's Newsletter. You can also listen to the Two Coach Bennetts Talking podcast on Apple Podcasts or on Spotify Podcasts Or you can follow on Instagram: @coachbennett TikTok: @CoachBennett Check out Coach Bennett on Cameo for any messages of inspiration or motivation or birthday wished or pep talk for you or friends or family or teammates: Coach Bennett Mastodon: @coachbennett Twitter: @BennettRunThreads: @CoachBennettStrava: Coach Bennett

#36: How to Start a Podcast with Jaice Shakespaere

Since I started my podcast, I've gotten some questions from other people about how to start a podcast. This is an interesting question to answer because it's actually very simple! If you are creating content in any area of your business, you could somehow turn that into a podcast or shift your business to have your podcast be your main form of content. Of course, there are challenging parts, too. I have found consistency to be really challenging when it comes to recording episodes. The tech part of it all also initially overwhelmed me–but again, it actually was more simple than I thought it would be. I wanted to do an episode addressing these questions, but I thought it might be a little boring simply having me tell you what microphone I use, what programs I use, etc., so I decided to have my friend Jaice on the podcast! Jaice is a photographer in Sioux Falls, SD, and she has been a member of my mastermind program, The Confident Creative, so I've gotten to know her on a coaching basis and also as a friend. She has a background in education and is now moving into the education space in her business to help educate other photographers (or those who want to become one). She recently started a podcast (The Mistakes I've Made So You Don't Have To) this year that has taken off, and I have loved watching her grow with it. Here are some of the things I talk about with Jaice: What made Jaice want to start a podcast How easy starting a podcast actually can be Equipment she uses Where to record your podcast Editing (and outsourcing) How Jaice started niching down and her transition to more education The goals she has for her podcast Monetizing podcasts and making sure it aligns with your brand Publishing your first episode and on what hosting platform What's involved with show notes Launching and why we suggest doing it with more than one episode Ideal posting schedule goals Creating content in a way that you are aligned with and that your audience connects with A few highlights from this episode: [28:14]  With show notes, you have the option of making them into a blog post and linking it back to your podcast. You can get more eyes on it from different avenues. [33:17]  There's no rule that says if you have a podcast, you have to release weekly. No, two weeks, a month, it doesn't matter. Whatever you want, whatever you can do, whatever makes you happy. [35:35]  ...Maybe it's time to take a step back and ask what is the goal of this podcast? Who am I trying to reach? What do I want to talk about? [35:55]  There's a million ways to create content that people will want to consume somehow, but if you're not aligned with that, your people are going to be able to tell...The medium doesn't really matter so much; it's so much more about the messages. [38:01]  I can't stress enough just make sure you know who you're talking to. Find your audience! That takes some soul searching. This was so much fun catching up with Jaice and discussing all things PODCASTING. We even ended the episode with a fun little get-to-know-you speed round. If you've been considering starting a podcast but feel a little unsure, I hope this episode provided you with some great insight as well as confidence to start now! Moore recently directed and produced “64,” a project on father-absent homes. “Father’s Day?” was also produced by Squeaky, and addresses the effects of absentee fathers. It recently debuted on the launch of Magic Johnson’s Aspire TV Network. “The Positive Controversy” is a show she developed, and “Face of Darkness-Journey to Healing” is documentary film that explores depression and suicide in African-American communities. She authored the book, #100 Pitches: Mistakes I’ve Made So You Don’t Have To, which is a film and TV-pitching guide for independent content creators about the do’s, don’t’s, and strategy of pitching film and TV projects. Dreams that Remain: Have your dreams changed over the years or remained the same? Squeaky says that her dreams have remained for her, from the early age of 11, when she knew she wanted to act. The only difference for her is that she’s given it a shot in front of and behind the Squeaky, is to remain open-minded and optimistic! TWEET: We usually perceive it as #failure if the outcome is different than we envisioned. @squeakymoore What is FAILURE, anyway? What exactly constitutes failure? Squeaky says that it isn’t really what most people think it is! Often, we perceive our efforts as failure, simply because the outcome wasn’t what we wanted or expected. Dealing with disappointment and fear is part of life, and it doesn’t equal failure. Mistakes are just the steps we must take on our way to the success we will become! TWEET: #Mistakes are how we become the successes we become. @squeakymoore Facing FEAR: How do you usually face fear? Squeaky says that she learned to face her fear head-on, and “put it out there so I can’t chicken out.” Becoming a master at not letting NO affect her has changed her perspective and her mindset. Her desire is to help others by letting them know what she has learned through the process of facing fear. Healing comes when you deal with the fear! TWEET: If you ask WHY enough, then you’ll get to the core of the #fear. @squeakymoore   Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser to take—“We have to set the goal and put it in writing.
