Zoo and MORE Klein.Ally.Show on KROQ is more than just a "dynamic, irreverent morning radio show that mixes humor, pop culture, and unpredictable conversation with a heavy dose of realness." (but thanks for that quote anyway). Hosted by Klein, Ally, and a cast of weirdos (both on the team and from their audience), the show is known for its raw, offbeat style, offering a mix of sarcastic banter, candid interviews, and an unfiltered take on everything from culture to the chaos of everyday life. With a loyal, engaged fanbase and an addiction for pushing boundaries, the show delivers the perfect blend of humor and insight, all while keeping things fun, fresh, and sometimes a little bit illegal.

Chris has always had a passion for animals. This passion manifested itself into a lifelong career of caring for animals at one of the world's finest zoos - ZooTampa at Lowry Park. From humble beginnings working as a primate intern to his rise as the Chief Zoological Officer, Chris has developed a sophisticated team of zoo professionals that passionately care for around 1000 animals. In fiscal year 2034, ZooTampa is projected to generate $280 million in total economic impact in current dollar value, a 45 percent increase from fiscal year 2019 due to the implementation of the Zoo's master plan. Join us as Chris discusses everything from the full life cycle of the animals, the zoo's current projects like their manatee conservation project, the zoo being featured on National Geographic's “WILD: Secrets of the Zoo,” the zoo's future plans and their impact on the Tampa Bay community, and the sensationalism of the de-extinction of animals. You've probably heard of Noah's Ark. Animals, a boat, a rainbow... and, oh yeah, a global flood. Sounds like God was in a bad mood, right? This week, Kyle Ranson flips the script on one of the Bible's wildest stories. It's not about anger (or even just a Biblical precursor of “We Bought a Zoo”)—it's about a God and his deep love for his people. Recorded live at Crossroads Church in Cincinnati, Ohio.

If you're concerned about an advert you hear, please contact the platform you are listening to directly. Mayor Mike Johnston revealed his proposed budget for 2026 this week — the vibes are off and the numbers are down. But what can we read between the lines of his proposals to see where the city is going next? Our politics and green chile correspondent Justine Sandoval joins host Bree Davies and producer Paul Karolyi to talk about the mayor's new priorities on homelessness and other secrets hidden in the budget. Plus, some City Park neighbors are big mad about the Denver Zoo's proposal to reopen a long-shuttered West Gate, so we're talking about one of our favorite topics — parking — and all our other wins and fails of the week. Plus, Justine has a big announcement. Paul talked about a landmark preservation debate in Wash Park, rising homelessness in Houston, exceptions to Waste No More, and Denver's gun violence dashboard. Bree talked about the Federal Theater reopening. Justine discussed the recent debates over the Mestizo-Curtis Park Pool and Park Hill Park. We also discussed the La Loma green chile situation. What do you think about the Zoo reopening the old West Gate? We want to hear from you! Especially if you live in City Park West. She also brings us some truly juicy tales from the study of primates, like a true crime thriller involving missing monkeys, a power struggle, and even a double life, an airplane full of macaques, setting the record straight on baboon social heirarchies, and the instrumental role of women in shaping primatology and our understanding of nature.Links:Learn more about Dr. Keriann McGoogan's work on her websiteGet your copy of Sisters of the Jungle: The Trailblazing Women Who Shaped the Study of Wild PrimatesFollow Keriann on Instagram! For more information about us & our podcast, head over to our website!Follow Just the Zoo of Us on BlueSky, Facebook, Instagram & Discord!Follow Ellen on BlueSky!Sound Credit:Black howler monkey: Alex Munro, via biacoustica: https://bio.acousti.ca/content/black-howler-monkey-shortSiamang: Frank Lambert, XC1031364. Even though the Chargers game shaved an hour off the show, Tim Conway Jr. packed three hours of laughs into two. From almost making it to the L.A. Zoo (“Everyone wins at the Zoo!”), to hilarious takes on birth order quirks and getting hit on in traffic stops, Conway and crew didn't miss a beat. Thompson getting pulled over turned into pure comedy. It's everything you love about the show, just in a tighter package.
Read transcriptWelcome web-slinging warriors and joystick jockeys to another thrilling episode of Play Comics where we untangle the sticky situation of comic-to-game adaptations with the precision of Peter Parker trying to explain away his sudden photography skills! This week we're diving headfirst into the cel-shaded spectacular that is Ultimate Spider-Man, the 2005 game that took Brian Michael Bendis and Mark Bagley's comic masterpiece and somehow convinced every gaming platform from here to the Daily Bugle that they needed a piece of this web-slinging action. Released across more systems than Spider-Man has quips in his arsenal—PS2, Xbox, GameCube, Game Boy Advance, and Nintendo DS—this Treyarch-developed adventure let players experience both sides of the symbiote coin. Whether you were swinging through Manhattan as everyone's favorite wise-cracking wall-crawler or stomping around as the terrifyingly toothy Venom, this game promised to deliver more comic book authenticity than J. Jonah Jameson has anti-Spider-Man editorials. Joining us for this ultimate discussion are two absolute legends from the podcasting multiverse: Derek B Gayle and Doug Fink, the dynamic duo behind Walloping Websnappers and a whole constellation of other fantastic shows on the Glitterjaw Queer Podcast Collective that may not be directly relevant to our web-slinging shenanigans today, but are undeniably brilliant nonetheless. When they're not busy dissecting every Spider-Man cartoon ever created or exploring the depths of various other pop culture phenomena, these two bring their encyclopedic knowledge of all things Spider to help us determine whether this game truly captured the essence of the Ultimate universe or if it just left us feeling like we'd been caught in one of Green Goblin's elaborate schemes. So dust off those early 2000s gaming controllers, practice your best Venom growl, and prepare for an episode that's guaranteed to be more entertaining than watching Eddie Brock try to explain his sudden career change from journalism to alien symbiote hosting! Learn such things as: Can you make a game that really fits in with the continuity of the comics AND have it stay that way? Will we sucker any artists into making Venomized versions of The Muppets? What kind of good butt battle would ensue between Venom and Captain America? And so much more! You can find Derek and Doug on a bunch of stuff on the Glitterjaw Queer Podcast Collective, including Walloping Websnappers, Skreeonk!, and Falling With Style. You can also find Doug on Novel Gaming and on BlueSky @ickybooley. You can also find Derek on Gimmicks and Lee Carvallo's Podding Challenge, and on BlueSky @derekbgayle. Violence against outstretched palms – as in hands not the trees. The curious case against Encinitas City Councilmember Luke Shaffer. San Diego County Water Authority leaders may have thought the chatter about dissolving their agency may be in the past then came LAFCO. The funny agency nobody knew about is making headlines again. And guests to the Zoo spend a bunch of money in San Diego. The Zoo and the city want them to spend a bit more. SHOW NOTES SEGMENT 1 - Promos Buy Your Tickets for Politifest 2025 Politifest is back on Oct. 4, and this won’t be our usual public affairs summit. This year, we’re bringing together community leaders to go head-to-head in our first ever Solutions Showdown. Hear their ideas and cast your vote on which proposals you think could solve the biggest issues facing San Diego. Save on tickets with early bird pricing at vosd.org/politifest SEGMENT 2 - Palm Trees Are Not Trees There’s a particular palm tree making its mark on Southern California... and not in a good way. The Mexican fan palm — those tall, classic pseudo-trees along with other invasive species — isn’t native to Southern California, but nonetheless maintains a death grip on its ecological landscape. Within the past year, San Diego has seen multiple canyon fires propelled by these pesky out-of-towners. And within weeks of the smoke clearing, they’re already resprouting, providing fuel for another fire before native plants are able to regenerate. While fire is a natural to California’s ecosystem, necessary for many native plants to survive, it can be detrimental if it occurs too frequently. This is one of many reasons San Diego won’t be planting them on public land anymore. Our intern, Tessa Balc, sat down with the executive director of @sdcanyonlands to see how we can nurture San Diego’s native landscape.

Host Jeremy C. Park talks with Jim Bartoo, Marketing and Public Relations Director with Nashville Zoo, who discusses the zoo's history, growth and development, and commitment to animal welfare, along with the importance of accreditation by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums. He highlights the zoo's conservation efforts, both local and global, as well as their educational programs and upcoming events. The conversation also covers the zoo's unique features, including exhibit design and animal care, and ways for the public to support and enjoy the zoo's experiences.Nashville Zoo's Philosophy and DevelopmentsDuring the interview, Jim provides an overview of Nashville Zoo's history, location, and recent developments. He explains that the zoo, which moved to its current location in 1996, has been built from the ground up, allowing for the implementation of the latest philosophies and technologies for animal care and habitat development. Jim also discusses the shift in zoo philosophy from focusing on cleanliness and sterilization to prioritizing animal welfare and creating environments that promote animal happiness and comfort.Importance of AZA Accreditation for ZoosJim discusses the importance of accreditation by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA) for zoos in the United States. He explains that while all zoos must have a USDA license for animal care, AZA accreditation goes well beyond the minimum standards, focusing on animal health, veterinary care, education, and conservation efforts. This accreditation is a gold standard for animal care and is required every five years as the standards evolve. Jim emphasizes that AZA accreditation is crucial for visitors to ensure they are supporting zoos that prioritize animal welfare.Nashville Zoo's Conservation and Education EffortsJim discusses Nashville Zoo's conservation efforts, which include local and global initiatives. The zoo works with organizations like TWRA and USDA to protect streams and environments in Tennessee, conducting head start programs and monitoring waterways. Internationally, they study animal migration patterns, such as giraffe movements in Africa, to address habitat fragmentation issues. The zoo also focuses on education, offering programs for all ages and taking ambassador animals to schools and nursing homes.Nashville Zoo Upcoming EventsJim also highlights upcoming events at Nashville Zoo, including the upcoming opening of a new exhibit, Leopard Forest, the Zzzoofari Slumber camp out on May 24, Brew at the Zoo on June 13, and Summer Splash Saturdays in July and August. Jim encourages public support through memberships, donations, and corporate sponsorships to help fund new exhibits and conservation work.Visit https://www.nashvillezoo.org to learn more.
