Prepare brine to boil in a small stainless-steel saucepan; reduce heat, and simmer 3 minutes, stirring to dissolve sugar and salt. Tightly pack vegetables into 1 hot (1-qt/1-L) or 2 hot (1-pt/500-mL) jars. Pour hot brine over vegetables to cover. Cover jar with lid; let stand 1 hour or until cooled to room temperature. Store in the refrigerator for at least 1 month for best flavor or up to 3 months. Munaf Manji and Griffin Warner talk MLB betting for Friday and this weekend. The guys cover the entire card and give out best bets. The MLB Friday betting podcast hosted by Manaf Manji and Griffin Warner covered an extensive analysis of all 16 matchups. Manaf opened by highlighting the full Friday slate, including a doubleheader between the Orioles and Red Sox. Griffin immediately addressed frustrations with umpiring and pitch clock enforcement, using Yoán Moncada's controversial strikeout as an example. For Game 1 of the doubleheader, Povich (Orioles) and Baio (Red Sox) were both criticized, with both hosts favoring the over due to poor pitching. Povich's 5.28 ERA vs. Boston and Baio's recent seven-run outing made betting the over a logical play. In Cubs vs. Reds, Griffin noted Hunter Greene's return from injury as a risk, while Manaf praised Boyd's consistency and strikeouts, leaning toward the Cubs. Brewers vs. Pirates saw Freddie Peralta favored despite Pittsburgh's Paul Skenes' talent, due to a lack of run support. Both suggested under 7 as a good play. For Giants vs. Nationals, McKenzie Gore's strikeout success and the Giants' bullpen issues led to a lean toward the Nationals, especially in the first five innings. Blue Jays vs. Rays featured skepticism toward both bullpens. Despite Rasmussen's 3.00 ERA vs. Toronto, his 1-4 record and poor run support made the Jays an attractive underdog. Dodgers vs. Mets focused on Clayton Kershaw's weak return and Canning's strong 5-1 record with a 2.47 ERA. The Mets, 8-1 in Canning's starts, were backed heavily. In Guardians vs. Tigers, Jackson Jobe's 4-0 record and Detroit's 8-0 team mark in his starts made them the clear pick. Pablo Lopez vs. Royals saw under 7.5 suggested, with Lopez's home starts hitting the over but mainly due to weak opponents. In Braves vs. Padres, Chris Sale's 15-2 home mark with Atlanta was compelling, but concerns over the Padres' offensive slump and pitching made Griffin hesitant. The Rangers, with a 35-15-1 under record and the worst AL offense, were labeled an overvalued -180 favorite vs. the White Sox. Burke's wildness (13 walks in 3 starts) and Texas' high swing rate set up a potential upset. Mariners vs. Astros examined Emerson Hancock's inconsistency and the Astros' injury woes. Both leaned Mariners at plus money. Phillies vs. A's spotlighted Sacramento's hitter-friendly park. Despite Wheeler's average road form, Philadelphia's offense was favored to overwhelm. Yankees vs. Rockies centered on the 12.5 total at Coors, suggesting Yankees' team total overs. Marlins vs. Angels featured heavy criticism of Sandy Alcantara's 7.99 ERA. Kikuchi, despite inconsistencies, was backed due to the Angels' offensive momentum. Cardinals were recommended over Arizona due to Gallen's 5.14 ERA and recent struggles, while Mikolas had been reliable. For best bets, Griffin took the Angels at -143, fading Alcantara. Manaf backed the Mets over Kershaw, citing Canning's stellar form and New York's offensive edge. One of the inspirations for me to pursue my PhD was “The Secret of Home Economics” by Danielle Drelinger and I got to interview her for this episode. Danielle and I were able to discuss some of the topics but, honestly, you gotta read the book!!  Danielle wanted to write this book, because she covered education as a journalist. She knew she wanted it to be about education, include all races, all genres, all economic classes, and cover history. Thus was born “The Secret History of Home Economics”! Origins of Home Economics Pre World Wars  The first thing I wanted to discuss was the role of home economics pre-wars. From the 1800's leading up to the wars, home economics was really for any person, AKA not gender specific. Home economics was more the actual tasks and how labor intensive they were due to lack of electricity, running water, and staff.  That staff was often immigrants and black women once slavery had ended. A black student I know, from a different PhD program, joked that they have always done laundry. Not even a question to outsource it, black women remember were slaves first but then hired help. But even in those days, it was common to outsource your laundry. It was outsourced to locations that had running water and other conveniences. Importance of Home Economics During the Wars - Science of Food The discussion shifted more towards home economics during WWII. It was during this time that women entered the work force in America. Home economics was teaching these women how to cook and maintain their homes with the additional demands of working. Women were creating clothing patterns to make work clothes and teaching clothes how to mend and make do due to limited supplies. They were also experimenting with food to keep their families fed and feed our soldiers. Home economists wrote cookbooks for each arm of the military. The Angels of Bataan, planted to supplement prisoners of war rations in the Philippines. At home, they had victory gardens to supplement rations too. Canning discovered through home economics was discovered and became popular to ensure food supply.   And the industrial revolution brought home appliances to help with labor intensive tasks like laundry and ovens that had temperature regulation. Along with conveniences came higher expectations. This is where I pointed out that I am working on the definition of housework because some of the “male tasks” seem more to me like “household ownership”. And it's peculiar how the definition of home economics became mostly a woman's role after the war.  The Deliberateness of Stay At Home Mom Depiction The men had come back, they fired a majority of the women, and men were back to work. Now stay at home moms were in charge of emotionally supporting their children and the care of their upbringing and all the text books reflected that. “Kids need their moms and moms need to be available all the time.” It was then I realized that I have a degree in Family and Consumer Sciences but the only thing that schooling taught me was early childhood education! The bureau of Home Economics that once was making patterns for adjustable bib overalls for women in the workforce was now selling patterns for shopping coats for women to wear while shopping for groceries.  How Should We Move Forward?  Danielle feels strongly and I agree that the name should be changed back to Home Economics. A majority of people Danielle speaks to feels this is a class that should be added back to the curriculum of school - to teach basic life skills. And considering all of the subdisciplines, we should be offering a more holistic teaching of home economics; like eating healthy more affordably and consuming more responsibly. It ended with the powerful tagline: “Whatever you do, you can't win — so win.”The ad had it's fair share of praise and critics, with TV host Bill Maher planting his flag in the latter camp.On a recent episode of Real Time with Bill Maher, (airdate 2.14.25), called the message of the commercial a “zombie lie.”“It means like something used to be true, and it stopped being true. And then people kept saying it. I feel like this is a giant zombie lie,” Maher argued. “I mean, when was the last time a woman was told, ‘You can't do this? You can't be confident?' Who are these imaginary, mean old men of the patriarchy?”Well, Bill, “the mean old men of the patriarchy” aren't imaginary. In fact, they are all across America. In fact, many of them are pastors, Sunday school teachers, and some have even started Bible colleges.When I was growing up in a fundamentalist Christian community, the idea that women could “do anything” was not just discouraged—it was actively opposed.On my podcast, Preacher Boys, I've spent years exposing how religious institutions—particularly in Independent Fundamental Baptist (IFB) circles—perpetuate strict and archaic gender roles. These roles aren't just suggestions in that world. They are codified into church doctrine, college curricula, and life expectations.Take Hyles-Anderson College, one of the more well-known IFB institutions. While men at the school can pursue theological degrees, pastoral studies, and climb their way into powerful leadership roles, women are encouraged to enroll in programs like Marriage and Motherhood. (Yes, that's an actual college course.)The curriculum includes credits for “Canning and Freezing,” “How to Rear Infants,” “Scheduling Your Time,” and, my personal favorite, “Crock Pot Cooking.”Notably absent? Any track leading to ordination, church leadership, or even a career outside of traditional homemaking.The highest aspiration for many young women at these colleges isn't earning a degree but earning a husband. It's become a regular joke in these circles that “instead of a BS or PHD, young women go to college for their “MRS” degree!” Hardy har har.To claim that patriarchal control is a thing of the past is to ignore millions of women who are still being told exactly what they can't do. It's to dismiss the experiences of women who are not allowed to preach, lead, or even work outside the home without backlash. It's to erase the reality of those raised in communities where obedience and submission aren't just encouraged but mandated.
