Here we are with Part Two of the 2022 Keys 100! This episode kicks off with Lucien "Mr Hot Chocolate" Boulet, this year he finished in a time of 31:07:07. Last year he ran a time of 27:58:04, however, with the time this year being slower... the journey was different, and that journey is what the true success was! He was also crewed by his amazing kids! After Lucien, I am joined by Patrick Gallagher, Matt Moss, Kalo Axsom, and Nels Matson! As Gallagher has done races like the Western States 100, the Barkley Classic, and Croom Zoom...this was his first Keys 100. He knocked it out of the park with a time of 25:04:22! As for Nels Matson, he followed Gallagher going 25:40:41. Nels was running in training for his run across the United States for Project Campbells Call. Kalo Axsom of the O-Town Blazers finished in 29:00:19 followed up by Matt Moss with a time of 29:04:15. These guys did AMAZING!!! They overcame the tough conditions; the humidity, the heat, the hot pavement and cement... a huge physical victory, but also a moral victory. Shoutout to Bob Becker, Mark Cudak, all the course marshals, volunteers, crews, and runners! You make this happen!
We were joined by our first in studio guest in years, Pinky of Team Pinky Muay thai from South Australia jumped on the mic and we had a chat about the great night of fights 1774 put on. Matt Moss is a drawer - an artist and designer - introduced to me by Luis Santamarina (see interview 8). Matt and Luis worked together on a daily webcomic about their respective lives unfolding during the pandemic called 66 days. Matt and I explore many topics including: technology's impact on design work over the last two decades, learning from your mistakes, forgiveness and fallibility and the virtues and challenges of using creativity to sort through ideas and contemporary hot topics. Enjoy the Random!
This was a lot of fun, and I hope pretty educational; I know I learned a ton. I reached out to Matt and asked him to join me for 20-30 minutes to talk about Vietnam's small arms. Instead, he gave me almost an hour of his time! Jammed with insight and information, the hour zipped right by. We covered the early development and reliability issues of the M16, its performance at Ia Drang, and briefly talked about some of the other weapons of the battle. We made sure to leave plenty of meat on the bone for conversations down the line! After a month of teasing you folks, it's finally here! Madonna's birthday celebration for 2k16 is chalk-full of bootleg fabulosity! I haven't created a full-on circuit set for her majesty since 2010 and based on the songs I was coming across, it became pretty clear that's where this set was heading. Just based on this site's stats, I know we've got a ton of circuit-lovers here and it's a given that Madonna reigns the Diva Hall of Fame. Just like peanut butter and chocolate, these are two great tastes that go together. This set relies heavily on bootlegs from Rebel Heart and M.D.N.A. but also pulls from her vast catalog going back to the 80's with bootlegs that are so well done, they could have been official. HenriqMoraes one-ups Matt Moss's take on Like a Virgin by delivering a bouncy tribal fun adaption of the original while VMC turns the best version EVER of What It Feels Like For a Girl (and there were some awesome remixes that accompanied that release). Even though it's a dub, Luke DB, Umberto Balzanelli & Michelle give us the best version of Hung Up that frankly never existed with the official mixes. Sorry, but those were always lacking and Leanh delivers the hands-down winner of all the bootlegs with a remake of my least favorite song from American Life, Nobody Knows. His progressively tribal version is just so fun, it's a wonder nobody ever thought of this treatment. VMC takes Bedtime Story and basically puts Victor Calderone's unreleased version on steroids ensuring a circuit-lover's wet dream. Ralphi Rosario delivers an 11+ minute progressively tribal opus to Erotica, while Thiago Anthony gives Frozen a 21st-century circuit makeover. I reached out to Barry Harris to see if he had anything new in the works but sadly he did not. When I told him his version of Deeper and Deeper + Vogue totally made the cut, he suggested Ghosttown. I tried to make it work, but his more house-up rendition (which I love) just sapped the energy out of the set so I went with DJ Paulo and Jackinsky instead. He's a super nice guy so I'm pretty certain he took it well. Finally, I close the set out with a mashup by Noface between Madonna and Me and My Toothbrush's Gold Member. This pretty much sets the stage for a fun Chic-esque disco re-work of the original that's guaranteed to put a smile on your face if you haven't heard it yet. Every year I try to outdo myself on these mixes and always fret as to what I'm going to come up with. While I've always been pleased with the end result, this year I can honestly say I am beyond stoked. From the artwork, track selection (yes, I had a lot to go through) to the actual mixing, this is one solid set that should set the dance floor on FIRE for your local Madonna birthday celebration. I hope you have as much fun listening to it as I did putting it together for her loyal subjects. ENJOY! I guess I should stop making promises for a certain date, as things inevitably come up. At least I'm only a day late with plenty of time before Halloween and Pride (for the ATL) this weekend. Anywho, let's get down to it. This particular mix is decidedly more circuit oriented with lots of big room beats to spread around. One of my big favorites of the moment is the Simone Denny and Barry Harris collaboration "Drama Queen." Ooh, did I just write Barry Harris? You bet! The former half of Thunderpuss has now returned from exile with his guns blazing! One of the things I didn't get around to mentioning in the recent Chrome Edition 2003, was that 2003 was the year Thunderpuss split, despite the fact that the TP franchise was still very much in demand by artists and club-goers around the globe. Both Barry and Chris gave separate interviews to About.com in 2004 which cover their early years and how Thunderpuss came about down to their amicable split in 2003. Fast forward to 2009, and Barry's back with "Drama Queen" a ripping track where circuit meets 80's electronica. This is a hot original production from Barry that attempts to break up the monotony of many of today's circuit tracks. While the actual song doesn't cover any new territory, it's familiar theme rings well with the gay crowd; but it's the actual production that people will be shaking too. I'm hoping this isn't a one-off and that we'll be getting even more from Barry in the near future. For now, all I want to say is "welcome back Barry, we missed you!" I also want to give a HUGE shoutout to my new favorite producer Matt Moss from New York. A graphic designer by day (he's gotta pay the bills) and producer/DJ/remixer the rest of the time, like many of us, Matt has been hit by the recession. Matt approach's each production based on what the song requires rather some cookie cutter formula where you just slap on the vocals over the same basic beats like many other producers do (without mentioning names). It's his unique style and unquestionable understanding of his craft that makes him a surefire bet for success. I've included two of his mixes in this set. The first "Wendy Williams Theme" an ode to the infamous gossip talk trash radio host, which is nothing short of pure fun! The second mix is Madonna's "Like a Virgin" which he has completely re-worked from top to bottom making this a welcome addition to the upcoming Pride festivities this weekend in the ATL. Matt seems to think these are not his best work, and maybe not (I haven't had the chance to listen to everything), but they are outstanding productions that are sure to move the boys on any dancefloor from coast to coast. You can check out Matt's work on his blog at mattmossforever.com. Make sure to drop him a note, especially if you pick up anything for use in your own sets. I promise you, he's a really nice guy without the attitude and like most of us would love to have some feedback about his work. Finally, you may have noticed an Eagles song in the track list. Last year's Halloween Edition included the memorable remake of the Ministry classic "(Every Day Is) Halloween" by Dangerous Muse. I didn't really have anything that would fit for this year's gay ghouls and goblins, but when I recently came across Alex Dubbing's rework of "Hotel California" I knew this was an absolute must. Check out the lyrics and you'll understand why: Mirrors on the ceiling, The pink champagne on ice And she said, we are all just prisoners here, of our own device And in the master's chambers, They gathered for the feast The stab it with their steely knives, But they just can't kill the beast Last thing I remember, I was Running for the door I had to find the passage back To the place I was before Relax, said the night man, We are programmed to receive. You can checkout any time you like, But you can never leave! And that's my wrap-up for the week. I'm going to be super busy the next two or three...
