It was my honor recently to speak with music writer Andrew Wild, who has written books about the likes of Queen, Fleetwood Mac, Dire Straits, and Pink Floyd, as well as about the iconic Live Aid concert festival. Andrew just released his second book about the 1980s "neoprog" era in England, chronicling six British bands that kept the progressive rock torch alive when the 1970s bands were either fading out or pivoting to more pop-oriented sounds. Those bands are: Marillion, IQ, Pallas, Pendragon, Twelfth Night, and Solstice. The book, A Playground of Broken Hearts: the Progressive Rock Revival 1984 to 1989, is a sequel to his A Mirror of Dreams: the Progressive Rock Revival 1981 to 1983. Andrew spoke to me about his music history, how he came to write about these six bands, how those groups kept the prog scene alive, and much more (including his upcoming book about Big Big Train!). In this video, we explore how Wall Street firms, REITs (Real Estate Investment Trusts), and private equity giants are reshaping housing markets—treating homes as hedge funds and tenants as revenue streams. The result? Displacement, skyrocketing rents, and the collapse of housing as a public good. But it doesn't have to be this way. What if we took housing out of the hands of corporate landlords and made it public infrastructure—like schools, libraries, and transit systems?

We are now reflecting on one of our favorite offbeat mashups: that time we explored What We Do in the Shadows, the mockumentary about New Zealand or Staten Island's most lovable vampire roommates. The movie and later developed TV show actually sucked us into some pretty powerful reflections on teaching and learning. From Colin Robinson's energy vampire tendencies—to Laszlo's chaotic charm and Nandor's eternal quest for finding his why, we found ourselves asking: What does it really mean to lead, to learn, and to live… forever… in the classroom? So let's take time unearthing What We Do in the Shadows of the classroom and see what's changed since we last aired.
iman Rapetti speaks to Dr. Shaheda Omar, Clinical Director at the Teddy Bear Foundation, who says the real danger isn’t just what children are watching — it’s what they do with it, and how it’s reshaping their understanding of sex, consent, and empathy. She joins us to unpack the behavioural shifts, what’s enabling this unchecked exposure to porn, and what urgently needs to be done to protect vulnerable children. Presenter John Maytham is an actor and author-turned-talk radio veteran and seasoned journalist. His show serves a round-up of local and international news coupled with the latest in business, sport, traffic and weather. The host’s eclectic interests mean the program often surprises the audience with intriguing book reviews and inspiring interviews profiling artists. A daily highlight is Rapid Fire, just after 5:30pm. CapeTalk fans call in, to stump the presenter with their general knowledge questions. Another firm favourite is the humorous Thursday crossing with award-winning journalist Rebecca Davis, called “Plan B”. On this episode we heard the shocking story about our Jeremy being approached by a woman at a local playground. She made some ridiculous accusation about him which he's now very angry over.

Ever noticed how your kids can be completely different people when they're around someone new? In this captivating episode, we dive deep into the fascinating world of childhood social development and the magic that happens when we gently push our kids beyond their familiar boundaries. We share candid stories about those surprising moments when our children exceeded our expectations socially. From a daughter making new playground friends completely independently to a normally reserved son transforming into a confident soccer player when grandparents were watching, these experiences highlight the incredible adaptability of children when given the right opportunities to shine. The conversation takes a thoughtful turn as we reflect on our own adult social anxieties. We realize that the awkwardness we feel trying to insert ourselves into new groups or strike up conversations with strangers is exactly what our children navigate regularly. This awareness sparks an important discussion about empathy and modeling—how can we expect our kids to be socially courageous if we ourselves avoid uncomfortable social situations? We tackle the particular challenge facing children who attend the same school from kindergarten through eighth grade, potentially stuck with the same peer group for nearly a decade. When difficult personalities or negative dynamics emerge, having outside friendships becomes crucial for a child's social development and self-esteem. Through personal experiences and honest reflection, we explore strategies for helping kids build diverse friendship circles that extend beyond their school environment.Whether you're raising a social butterfly or a more reserved child, this episode offers practical insights for nurturing social confidence while respecting your child's unique personality. Join our conversation about finding that sweet spot between protection and independence, and discover how stepping back occasionally might be exactly what your child needs to step forward socially.

As summer approaches, kids are spending more time outside—riding bikes, climbing on playgrounds, and walking through their neighborhoods. It's a season full of adventure and fresh air, but it also brings a higher risk of injuries. That's why we're turning to Jennifer Rodriguez from Miller Children's & Women's Hospital Injury Prevention Program. In this episode, she shares practical safety tips every parent and caregiver should know. From pedestrian safety to preventing playground injuries and making sure helmets are worn correctly, Jennifer covers the essentials to help keep kids safe while they enjoy the sunshine. Whether you're a parent, grandparent, or just someone who cares about the well-being of kids in your community, this is a conversation worth tuning into.
Welcome back to the Inside JABA series—this is Episode 23, and it's a must-listen for anyone interested in using Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) to improve safety in school settings. What does climate have to do with theology and where does storytelling come in? Today, we sat down with Dr. Everett Hamner to talk about his interdisciplinary journey at Regent, and how it has shaped his interests in ecotheology, climate literature, and responding to the very real crisis we are facing globally as a result of our consumption. By delving into stories that create and envision alternative futures, such as Playground by Richard Powers, Everett weaves together science, faith and art to engage us with realistic and truthful approaches to these big issues. If you're interested in learning more, join us from July 7-11 for “Climate Theology and Storytelling.”Everett's BioDr. Everett Hamner is a Professor of English at Western Illinois University (WIU), where he has been a faculty member since 2008. In this week's episode, we'll be talking about a spirit board, or talking board, known to most as the Ouija Board. This "game" was designed to communicate with the dead, but it has proven time and time again that it's really just evil entities playing with you. The concept of the board is simple, but what you conjure up may be way more than you anticipated. Be very careful and hope that you don't encounter ZoZo!!If you have any comments, questions or stories you would like to share, or if you'd like to be on the show, email us at cryptidfanatic@gmail.com.Send us a textSupport the show

We have covered some pretty intense shows in our pop culture playground series - including the global phenomenons game of thrones and tiger king. But I think some of our most interesting and insightful educational connections have come from a vampire movie AND its companion series in spite of its bloody violence, crude sexual content, and language. Thankfully, it's bloody hilarious too. Our What We Do in the Shadows minisode first aired August 23rd, 2023. Enjoy!
