Ezekiel writes about death and restoration
Fr. Mike explains the significance behind the mention of bones in Jeremiah and Ezekiel. In Jeremiah, we learn that the bones of God's people are scattered because of their worship of false gods. In Ezekiel, we see the prophet prophesy over the valley of dry bones and the Lord's Spirit restoring and moving within them. Today's readings are Jeremiah 8, Ezekiel 37-38, and Proverbs 14:33-35. Sermons from Gold Ave Church, Grand Rapids, Michigan
Your Daily Prayer
“Dry Bones” is a gritty, blues-funk revival song that rumbles with swampy guitar, deep groove, and raw soul. It tells the story of God's power to breathe life into what's broken, turning rust, scars, and wear into a testimony of redemption and purpose.
In this powerful sermon, Pastor Gabriel Platero centers on the call of the faithful remnant to bring revival to the church and society. Drawing from Ezekiel 37, the imagery of dry bones coming to life becomes a vivid picture of renewed hope and faith. He also reflects on the value of traditional worship songs, the urgency of proclaiming God's truth with boldness, and the danger of silence in a world of opposition. Listeners are challenged to stay rooted in God's Word and to speak life into the “dry bones” within their own lives and communities.

When it seems like all the life is gone from what is important to you, your marriage, your kids, your job, your church do you just talk about how it has not life? Does your talk reflect what is going on? If so, you have lost the greatest ability of the modern day believer. What if you rose above and the nasty speak and found out what God is saying? Brian Higbee talks about the example that God gave us in someone who saw just dry bones. In that example we see how to make life where there were only dry dead bones. Check it out.
A mighty army of dry bones.
This is the story of the Valley of the Dry Bones. To put it mildly - Israel probably felt like those dry bones - disconnected and isolated - alone and probably a bit dead inside during this time. Captivity, forced separation from loved ones, oppression, isolation in a new land. We know what those dry bones feel like. Then God asks a curious question: "Can these bones live?" Uh, they're dead, God. What are you even talking about? The bones can't do anything for themselves. All they can do is sit there in the dust. Then God tells Ezekiel to call upon the breath - the four winds. Help comes from outside ourselves - comes from beyond ourselves. He calls on the breath - the wind - and the bones live. The Spirit is the power beyond ourselves. But God also sends Ezekiels into our lives. This happens throughout history, and we can see it. God sends us Ezekiel's, too. So the next time you feel disconnected and isolated and alone - pray for and watch for and wait for the Spirit. But also pray for and watch for and wait for an Ezekiel to enter into your life - new life might be just around the corner. So here we end on a hopeful note, of new life being possible. Ezekiel 37:1–14 (Listen) The Valley of Dry Bones 37:1 The hand of the LORD was upon me, and he brought me out in the Spirit of the LORD and set me down in the middle of the valley;1 it was full of bones. 2 And he led me around among them, and behold, there were very many on the surface of the valley, and behold, they were very dry. 3 And he said to me, “Son of man, can these bones live?” And I answered, “O Lord GOD, you know.” 4 Then he said to me, “Prophesy over these bones, and say to them, O dry bones, hear the word of the LORD. 5 Thus says the Lord GOD to these bones: Behold, I will cause breath2 to enter you, and you shall live. 6 And I will lay sinews upon you, and will cause flesh to come upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and you shall live, and you shall know that I am the LORD.” 7 So I prophesied as I was commanded. And as I prophesied, there was a sound, and behold, a rattling,3 and the bones came together, bone to its bone. 8 And I looked, and behold, there were sinews on them, and flesh had come upon them, and skin had covered them. But there was no breath in them. 9 Then he said to me, “Prophesy to the breath; prophesy, son of man, and say to the breath, Thus says the Lord GOD: Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe on these slain, that they may live.” 10 So I prophesied as he commanded me, and the breath came into them, and they lived and stood on their feet, an exceedingly great army. 11 Then he said to me, “Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel. Behold, they say, ‘Our bones are dried up, and our hope is lost; we are indeed cut off.' 12 Therefore prophesy, and say to them, Thus says the Lord GOD: Behold, I will open your graves and raise you from your graves, O my people. And I will bring you into the land of Israel. 13 And you shall know that I am the LORD, when I open your graves, and raise you from your graves, O my people. 14 And I will put my Spirit within you, and you shall live, and I will place you in your own land. Then you shall know that I am the LORD; I have spoken, and I will do it, declares the LORD.” Footnotes [1] 37:1 Or plain; also verse 2 [2] 37:5 Or spirit; also verses 6, 8, 9, 10 [3] 37:7 Or an earthquake (compare 3:12, 13) (ESV)Romans 8:10–11 (Listen) 10 But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 11 If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus1 from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you. Celebrating our fifth season of the Suebiquitous Podcast with host Sue Duffield, starts with a newness of heart, mind, soul and body. Revivify, the word, means "to bring new life" to something that is dead or in need of a resurrection. One of the Bible's most incredible statements is "..that the same Spirit who raised Christ from the dead now lives in us.." (Romans 8:11). Just that message alone should ignite whatever is dead in you, to come alive. Take a few minutes after listening to this episode and ask yourself these questions: What's in my life that has become stagnant, dry, or even dead? How do I even know if I'm "dead" to the Living Word? What are the things that keep me dead, isolated or out of contact with the Holy Spirit? Know this: It's a simple as asking. Then take your stand for Christ and get those bones moving! Matthew 18: 19-20 reminds us, “If two of you agree here on earth concerning anything you ask, my Father in heaven will do it for you. For where two or three gather together as my followers, I am there among them.” www.sueduffield.com "Revive Us Again", by Jeff & Sue Duffield/Hymphonic Album BMI ©2012 Available on iTunes, Amazon Music, Spotify and YouTube
Miriam Herschlag, Sara Hirschhorn and Noah Efron talk about (1) The open-letter from Airforce reservists and retirees, calling on the Government to end the war, the army's scorched-earth response, and the flood of letters-of-support for the original letter – What's it all mean?; and (2) The decision by Hebrew University's elite publishing house, Magnes, to shelve plans to publish a Hebrew translation of Mein Kampf, and whether or not there is a place on Israeli shelves for Hitler's now-100-year-old manifesto. All this and a singular record launch, a memorial tribute to Yaakov Kirschen, the auteur behind “Dry Bones,” and meeting a legend of Israeli song.
Brooklyn-born Israeli cartoonist Yaakov Kirschen, whose iconic “Dry Bones” cartoons appeared in newspapers for decades, has died at Meir Medical Center in Kfar Saba at the age of 87 after a lengthy illness. Kirschen, who made aliyah in 1971, began drawing his trademark cartoon “Dry Bones” in 1973—a series inspired by the biblical vision of the Valley of Dry Bones and featuring a main character named Shuldig (Yiddish for guilty or blame). The comic strip became internationally syndicated and was published in The Jerusalem Post for 50 years before Kirschen moved his work to JNS.Jeff Barak, a former editor in chief of The Jerusalem Post, says that Yaakov Kirschen was the “ideal cartoonist.” He told reporter Arieh O’Sullivan that Kirschen had a unique, original style and a joie de-vivre presence whose cartoons also resonated outside of Israel. A small corrective on Cleopatra and Rabbi Meir (we know they couldn't have actually spoken to each other; they didn't live at the same time!). From there, delving into the teachings of Rabbi Elazar, some of which are about personal conduct, some about personal intellect, and how we interact. Also, the possible people who were resurrected by Ezekiel, in restoring the dry bones of his visions to life. Plus, the fiery furnace of the Book of Daniel and Nebuchadnezzar -- borrowed by the midrash for the famous fiery furnace from which Abraham also emerges unscathed.
