This is the very last Merch Minds episode of 2020. Since I started the year with a Spanish co-host, it's only fitting that I end the year with a Spanish co-host. RJ Martinez joins me to recap some of the highlights and lowlights of 2020. Thank you everyone for your support, and I'll catch up with you next year.
After a 3 month absence Michael talks about what he's been up to since the last episode was published, how he was motivated by Yong of the Merch Minds podcast and what changes to expect from the show.
After a two week break, both Glen and Yong are back with another Merch Minds episode. Glen had been traveling attending conferences, and Yong's day job had been pretty demanding. They are finally back to catch up and talk print-on-demand. A lot has happened since the last episode. Yong had relaunched his Etsy store by deleting and relisting everything from scratch. This destroyed his algorithm, and he was hardly getting any traffic. After a couple of weeks, he's finally starting to get sales once again. Now that they're both back what have you been up to? How is your POD business running? Let them know in the comments below.
This week let's go back to the basics. The foundation of the Merch Minds podcast is based on graphic design. This week the boys talk to a talented designer in Danielle Podeszek. Danielle is a graphic designer who started her print-on-demand career on Zazzle. She then moved on to Merch by Amazon and has done relatively good for herself. Her experience as a corporate designer has given her the freedom to explore opportunities outside of a day job. Danielle's approach to design is straightforward. She uses basic shapes and color schemes, which is a throwback to the retro look. The boys said it a thousand time by now. Simple and clean designs are always the best, and Danielle has proven that with her portfolio. This week the boys talk to Johnathan Grzybowski from Penji. Johnathan is the co-founder of Penji, which is a design agency that offers high-end designs from in-house graphic designers. Unlike other agencies, they focus more on quality instead of quantity. Penji is unique because they have a streamlined back-end where you can communicate with your designer. They are also capping off their services to only 300 clients. Currently, there have 200 clients, but the spots will be filled up fast. Johnathan talks about how he hires students and graduates primarily from Rutgers University. He specifically hires students going through a design program. He also puts them through extensive training before they can be hired as a designer at Penji. You can submit unlimited designs and get unlimited revisions. Most of their work is completed within 48 hours. Their convenient month to month plan makes it easy to join with no contracts. You also get the original source files and have complete ownership of them. The best thing about Penji is you get real in-house designers that sit in the office with Jonathan. You don't get people online who claim they are designers. And Johnathan is generous enough to give the Merch Minds listeners a 10 percent discount. Just use the discount code listed below. Also, check out Johnathan's podcast where he interviews entrepreneurs from various backgrounds. Make sure and subscribe to his podcast, which is also listed below. Funny how people figure out their “lane”. If you go back and look hard enough you get to see the choices (good and bad) that have brought you to this point in your life. Guess what, Glen likes what he sees. He has shifted from the “cubicle” to the freedom to do as he pleases in his time frame and on his terms. Very cool story from a great guy. This week the guys are talking about design again. Typography to be exact. As Merch by Amazon becomes saturated with more competition, it's getting harder to get sales with everyone trying to get a piece of the pie. Glen and Yong have been preaching good design since they started the Merch Minds podcast. You can argue that their opinion is bias since they both have graphic design degrees but the lack of sales almost everyone is experiencing is proof that good design is important. You need to have a good design to stand out from the competition since the market is saturated with shirts in the same niche. Yong recently wrote the ebook Understanding Typography for Merch by Amazon, which was originally announced to the attendees of the Denver meetup. Now the ebook is being officially being announced to the general public and on sale for everyone. Yong wrote the book because after doing the Merch Minds podcast for a little over a year now no one still talks about design. Everyone is always talking about sales, marketing, and keywords but no one talks about the most important factor of doing the Merch by Amazon business. The book won't make you an expert in typography or design overnight, but it will introduce you to the basic fundamentals. The book will cover important topics such as kerning, spacing, font selection, font pairing and so much more! Even if you don't do your own design, this book will help you better communicate with your designer. Design is such a visual topic and week after week Glen and Yong been coming on the podcast talking about it. The book will visually explain a lot of the things that they have discussed on the podcast for the past year. It will help you better understand what good typography is. Yong had been secretly working on this book for over six months. Yong not only wrote the book but he also designed it. Glen wrote the foreward, and there are tons of resources stacked in the book. And here's the best part of making the purchase. Yong will continue to add to the book as time goes on and the people who purchase it will always get the newest version for free. He's promised that as long as he's alive and kicking, he will never charge you another penny for a revised version. Make the purchase today and up your design game with Understanding Typography for Merch by Amazon for just $37!
