This week, the boys cover “Fight Club”, the 1999 movie that is both an of-its-time dark satire and a should-have-been-released-in-2025 heat check. Before we dive into it, we need to get drinking! So we discuss the new Paul Thomas Anderson “Dr. Strangelove”-esque gripping satire (maybe?), “One Battle After Another”, the new Daniel Day-Lewis film “Anemone”, directed by his son, Ronan Day-Lewis, and John made it to the red carpet premier of Guillermo del Toro's latest fright film “Frankenstein”. We also discuss “Highest 2 Lowest” and “Swiped”. It's a busy show! Grab a beer and listen to us drunkenly talk about movies! linktr.ee/theloveofcinema - Check out our YouTube page! Paul Thomas Anderson himself cited 1988's RUNNING ON EMPTY as a direct influence on the new ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER, and it's not difficult to see the rhymes between these two films about former revolutionaries trying to protect their kids from the consequences of their parents' past. We'll get into those rhymes more next week, but first we devote some time to Sidney Lumet's 1988 film, which is less cat-and-mouse chase than coming-of-age family drama, anchored by a remarkable River Phoenix as the teenage son of former anti-war protesters on the run from the law. Unlike with PTA's film, there are no real bad guys in RUNNING ON EMPTY, only problems to negotiate within a rich family dynamic that is both delightful in its specificity and heartbreaking in its fragility. After that, we field some Feedback from listeners about our recent episodes on HIGHEST 2 LOWEST and THEY SHOOT HORSES, DON'T THEY? Please share your thoughts about RUNNING ON EMPTY, ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER, or anything else in the world of film, by sending an email or voice memo to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730. According to an investigation by The Verge, Google has allegedly been censoring searches involving "Donald Trump" and "dementia." The search engine no longer provides an AI summary, as it does for other searches, and instead says that this feature is not available. However, the AI summary shows up immediately when doing the same search for Joe Biden and possible dementia. The owners of Google were present at Trump's inauguration, so this isn't as surprising as you'd think - disgusting, yes, but not surprising.Multiple sources confirmed to The Washington Post that Donald Trump and Pete Hegseth are planning to force THOUSANDS of Pentagon employees to take polygraph tests so that they can try to find out who keeps leaking information. The irony, of course, is that all of their schemes to find leakers have been leaked to the press before they can even happen. Polygraph tests are unreliable to the point where they aren't even admissible in court, and the testing so far hasn't stopped any of the leaks or found any leakers. The Trump administration has ordered furloughed federal employees to set up "out of office" reply emails on their accounts during the government shutdown, and employees have been ORDERED to blame Democrats for the shutdown in their email messages. Staffers at multiple government agencies were given word-for-word scripts that they are to use, blaming Democrats in the Senate for the shutdown, even as Republicans control every single branch of the government. But polls already show the public is blaming Republicans for the shutdown. Two weeks ago, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. had the highest approval rating of any official in the Trump administration, sitting at a pathetic NEGATIVE four points. That was obviously still really bad, but still better than other officials in the administration. After his recent antics, however, he now has the LOWEST approval rating of any cabinet official. He managed to destroy his entire public image (the little bit that he had) in less than two weeks, and that is nothing short of amazing. Donald Trump had another major, unhinged meltdown on Truth Social on Thursday morning as he claimed that it was the Democrats who had gone "stone cold crazy." The man is completely off his rocker at this point, and all of his attacks on other people's sanity and intelligence is the most transparent projection we've ever seen.Text and and let us know your thoughts on today's stories!Subscribe to our YouTube channel to stay up to date on all of Farron's content: https://www.youtube.com/FarronBalancedFollow Farron on social media! Kelowna, BC - The Cavernous, a heavy psychedelic electronic duo from Kelowna, BC, are releasing their most unconventional project yet: Please Hold, a full-length concept album only accessible by calling a toll-free number. The album dropped July 28, 2025. Dial 1-877-420-9159 and you won't find a streaming link - you'll be placed in a surreal hold sequence filled with lo-fi beats, ambient textures, dissonant soundscapes, and cryptic automated messages. It's an experience equal parts soothing, uncanny, and existential. While Please Hold is only available in full via phone, the lead single “Guile” will be released on major streaming platforms with an official video, offering a glimpse into the project's eerie, immersive world. Built around a shifting tapestry of paranoia and tension, “Guile”showcases The Cavernous' ability to blur the line between unsettling and sublime. Known for their wall-of-synths setup and experimental ethos, The Cavernous (Rob McLaren and Jesse Barrette) draw sonic inspiration from HEALTH, Nine Inch Nails, and Mogwai's electronic works. Please Hold pushes that further, weaving together washed-out electronica, eerie downtempo, and progressive synth odysseys into a nonlinear meditation on death, vulnerability, and the fractured calm of modern life. Created over the winter of 2022–23, Please Hold was born out of asynchronous collaboration. McLaren leaned into the slow, liminal quality of looping improvisations, inspired by ambient comfort and the strange stillness of lo-fi music. Barrette added unpredictable rhythmic complexity, like the rare 15/8 time signature on “Quinze,” and sonic oddities - glass bottle percussion, banjo-synth hybrids, and distorted field recordings. Tracks like “Vitric” unfolds like a synthesizer-led funeral march, written the same week McLaren's cousin and closest childhood friend was found after going missing. The album's narrative turns hauntingly personal as it progresses. In “Lo-finite,” an automated operator breaks the fourth wall, reminding listeners that they, too, are on borrowed time. Please Hold lulls the listener into a false sense of security before pulling the rug out, one dial tone at a time. “It started as a joke about hold music,” says McLaren. “Then it became a meditation on death.” Please Hold isn't just an album - it's a call you won't forget. To experience the album, dial:

The Cinematography Podcast Episode 326: Matthew Libatique, ASC Cinematographer Matty Libatique, ASC, has had a productive year. Shortly after moving to New York, he began work on Spike Lee's film, Highest 2 Lowest. Immediately after wrapping that project, Matty prepped for Darren Aronofsky's Caught Stealing, and then, following a short break, he collaborated with Bradley Cooper on Is This Thing On? (which releases in December.) He found it fascinating to explore New York City through the lenses of three distinct directors, feeling privileged to shoot three New York-centric movies back-to-back. The New York depicted in Highest 2 Lowest and Caught Stealing are starkly different, depending on where people from different socioeconomic backgrounds live. Both films effectively convey the diverse realities of living there. "When you look at both films, separately, you have a feeling of New York, you feel like you're living in New York inside of these films," Matty explains. "And it's because the directors live in New York and have grown up in New York." During location scouting with both Lee and Aronofsky, Matty noted their deep familiarity and emotional attachment to where they chose to shoot. He feels that movies faking New York locations lack the inherent authenticity of shooting in the real city. Highest 2 Lowest is a reinterpretation of the Akira Kurosawa classic, High and Low. Matty used High and Low as an influence, even though Lee was not making a direct adaptation. He found the Kurosawa film helped him see the hierarchy between the affluent and the poor, and the literal rise to the top of a hill by the wealthy industrialist from his humble origins. These themes became the seed of his visual inspiration. In Highest 2 Lowest, Denzel Washington's record executive David King inhabits a high-rise, literally looking down on the world from a high vantage point. The film is intensely character-driven, and with a large ensemble cast, Matty often shot with two to three cameras per scene. The film used an actual exterior of the Olympia building in Dumbo, Brooklyn while the crew shot on a volume stage set for the interiors. Matty found shooting on the volume stage and working with Unreal Engine to create the background images for the penthouse set to be the most challenging aspect of the shoot. It demanded far more advance planning and preparation to perfect the background images than the production schedule allowed. He had to make early, calculated decisions and plan far in advance for shooting the plates that would be used as the backgrounds. Spike Lee frequently incorporates various film formats in his movies, and Matty saw an opportunity to use both a 16mm and a new KODAK Super 8 film camera once the action in Highest 2 Lowest shifted outside the controlled apartment environment. He use both the 16mm and the Super 8 on the subway and in scenes of the Puerto Rican Day parade, also combining them with different film stocks. Lee cut between these distinct formats, which made a sense of heightened chaos. Matty says, “It was just an effort to create chaos, you know, and having the unmatched visual images cut together to sort of just mimic a chaos around this character.” Caught Stealing recreates the New York City of the 1990s, with Martin Scorsese's After Hours serving as a major reference. Matty felt that the character Hank Thompson (Austin Butler) needed a distinct look to articulate the story. He thought about the rust-red tint of the Lee Marvin film, Point Blank, and used a Camtec Color-Con2 to deliberately bleed red color into a few key scenes. Even though Caught Stealing is entertaining and full of action, it was important to Aronofsky to tell a strong, narratively-driven story, with performance and character making the sequences as exciting and brutal as possible. “Like all Darren movies, there's a construct, there's a box, he sets up the architecture of the film,” Matty says.
After a long hiatus, Tommy returns to Cinematic Savants on a solo mission. With his co-hosts out for this episode it's on him to bring the entertainment and education for the week. He gives on Tulsa King episode 1 season 3 on Paramount+, Gen V season 2, and Peacemaker season 2. He gives his thoughts on The Conjuring: Last Rites, Highest 2 Lowest, and The Long Walk. To cap things off Tommy breaks down the situation with Jimmy Kimmel addressing the Charlie Kirk assassination and his thoughts on Jordan Peele tanking the potential success of the newly release Him, starring Marlon Wayans.
This week we review Highest 2 Lowest, Spike Lee's brazen remake of the 1963 black and white Akira Kurosawa classic, High and Low. A divisive movie with its own modern mind apart from its predecessor, Highest 2 Lowest split audiences at Cannes this year and has now split us on the podcast as well. Akira Kurosawa at the height of his power or Spike Lee's late style curio? We talk about aging masters, baffling scores, and Lee's storied oeuvre as a whole.
A Spike Lee joint starring Denzel Washington is must-see cinema, so the guys discuss this reimagining of an Akira Kurosawa classic. There's an awful lot to like about Spike Lee's newest film, HIGHEST 2 LOWEST. Unfortunately, there's also a lot to dislike about it. Denzel Washington and Jeffrey Wright are spectacular -- especially when they're on the screen together -- but A$AP Rocky might've been a casting misstep. So let's talk about it...

With over 50,000 streams and a reputation for vivid, emotionally honest songwriting, Toronto-based folk artist Stan Simon returns with Narrow Bridge, a new EP set for release on July 9, 2025, through Slammin' Media, distributed worldwide by Believe. Rooted in contemporary folk traditions and laced with elements of country and Americana, the EP weaves together themes of climate urgency, personal loss, and quiet resilience. Its title track (out June 4) leads the project with a tone that's both defiant and hopeful, offering a powerful invitation to “cross that narrow bridge” toward awareness, accountability, and renewal. “It's a passionate environmental and social call to action,” Simon says. “I wanted to write something that captures both the anger and the hope I feel about what's happening in the world. About how we treat nature, each other, and ourselves.” Written and recorded with longtime producer Dennis Patterson at Big Smoke Audio, Narrow Bridge takes a layered approach to reckoning. The vivid natural imagery in its title track (bleeding oceans, burning forests, mass extinction) is underscored by Simon's frustration with “greenwashing” and political indifference. And yet, beneath the urgency lies a steady, unshaken belief in collective transformation. “We're not beyond saving,” he adds. “The song is a reminder that renewal is possible, but only if we step into discomfort and choose to act.” That spirit of resolve and reflection runs through the entire EP, which Simon describes as “an invitation to disconnect from the noise and reconnect with the natural world, and with the deeper truths we all carry.” Alongside its global outlook, Narrow Bridge offers unflinching personal moments, including the grief-stricken ballad “Long Way Past Gone,” written shortly before the passing of Simon's father. “This song took on new meaning after he died,” Simon explains. “It's about feeling far beyond the point of return. There's numbness, resignation, and the sense of being broken in ways that can't be fixed.” Using imagery like a cardinal's song (often seen as a spiritual sign) Simon threads together mourning and metaphysical longing, evoking the empty quiet of spiritual collapse with poetic, weary precision. “I wanted to paint a picture of someone who is emotionally disconnected from life,” he says, “but also still reaching for meaning through the fog.” D I S C O V E R Website:https://www.stansimonmusic.com/Twitter:https://twitter.com/stansimonmusicInstagram:http://instagram.com/stansimonFacebook:https://www.facebook.com/stansimonmusic/Youtube:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCDkystQkNOVQxtl51oWTYgQSpotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/5FNVNpBAW998paHMVx3xLV Checkout my YouTube Channel with long form interviews from the Subversives | the History of Lowest of the Low. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL9d1VSeOHYuxFWKuRdmn9j8UTW6AHwS_fAlso my Weekly Tour Vlog is up an live on the YouTubeshttps://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL9d1VSeOHYuwphwhc4zd0VgY66f1OUQZp Pledge monthly with Patreon https://www.patreon.com/apologueShop Apologue products at http://apologue.ca/shopCheck out new Four Square Here: https://distrokid.com/hyperfollow/foursquare/brighton-beach-ephttps://distrokid.com/hyperfollow/foursquare/seven-oh-sevenhttps://distrokid.com/hyperfollow/foursquare/industry-at-home--21st-anniversary-remix-remasteredhttps://distrokid.com/hyperfollow/foursquare/when-weeks-were-weekends

Episode Summary Building and scaling a law firm isn't just about winning more clients or hiring more staff, it's about creating consistent, predictable visibility in your market. And the easiest way to do that is through organic marketing. In this episode of the Scalable Law Podcast, Caralee dives into what organic marketing actually involves, why it's the most underused growth lever in the legal industry, and how it can set your firm up for long-term success. Most law firm owners overlook organic marketing because it doesn't deliver overnight results, but it does deliver lasting ones. With the right strategies, you can build a powerful presence that generates leads 24/7, positions you as the go-to expert, and fuels your revenue growth without burning cash on ads. What You'll Hear in This Episode What organic marketing is and why it matters for law firms The key organic channels that drive consistent client enquiries Why organic strategies build long-term momentum that compounds How to start implementing organic marketing with simple, weekly actions How strong organic marketing boosts the ROI of your paid campaigns My Key Takeaways for You Organic marketing is the lowest-hanging fruit for law firms because it uses assets you already have such as your website, expertise, and relationships — rather than relying on a large ad budget. Content created now can keep attracting clients for years, creating compounding returns over time. It builds trust and positions you as an authority, which increases conversion rates and reduces the need for “hard selling.” A strong organic presence makes any future paid ads perform better by improving brand awareness and trust. Start small and stay consistent: optimise your website, update your Google Business Profile, post weekly, and nurture your email list. THIS WEEK: We are loaded with news this week, including the fallout of the Jimmy Kimmel/FCC controversy, false information on a casting for Spider-Man BND, and more. Then, in our TALK TOPIC of the week, Spike Lee gives you a reason to jump on Apple TV with my review of Highest 2 Lowest starring Denzel Washington, Jeffrey Wright, and A$AP Rocky.
Claire and Gavia share clashing opinions on Spike Lee's new crime thriller Highest 2 Lowest, starring Denzel Washington as a music mogul who faces financial ruin after his son is kidnapped and held to ransom. Remaking Akira Kurosawa's 1960s classic High and Low, it's a divisive new addition to Lee's filmography.
We welcome Indiana Pacers star point guard Tyrese Haliburton back to the show, along with legendary film director Spike Lee. What more needs to be said. The episode begins with Tyrese and Spike reminiscing about last season's playoff series between the New York Knicks and Indiana Pacers, including Tyrese's homage to Reggie Miller's choke gesture, Spike's relationship with Reggie, and the ongoing rivalry as a whole. They also discuss Spike's latest joint, ‘Highest 2 Lowest', and the greatness of actor Denzel Washington; so great, in fact, that Spike considers him the greatest living actor. Tyrese and Spike also discuss what it takes to be elite in both of their crafts, as well as fascinating comparisons between the best athletes and actors. Spike then graciously shares behind-the-scenes anecdotes from many of his legendary films, working with legends like Michael Jordan and Michael Jackson, and much more. Spike Lee's HIGHEST 2 LOWEST is built on the rock-solid narrative foundation of HIGH AND LOW, but the “interpretation” of Akira Kurosawa's 1963 crime-thriller classic he builds atop it can be shaky at times. We're all in agreement that HIGHEST 2 LOWEST has flaws, but whether those flaws add up to ruin or simply provide texture to a singular filmmaker's singular film is up for discussion in the first part of this week's episode. Then we move into Connections to see where Lee and Kurosawa's films align and diverge when it comes to high-low metaphor and imagery, the intersection of media and public opinion, and the value of police work. And in Your Next Picture Show, Scott recommends an earlier collaboration between Lee and HIGHEST 2 LOWEST star Denzel Washington that has only grown in his estimation since its 1998 release. Please share your thoughts about HIGH AND LOW, HIGHEST 2 LOWEST, or anything else in the world of film, by sending an email or voice memo to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730.
