In this episode of the Journey of My Mother's Son podcast, I talk with Teri M. Brown. Born in Athens, Greece as an Air Force brat, Teri M. Brown came into this world with an imagination full of stories to tell. She now calls the North Carolina coast home, and the peaceful nature of the sea has been a great source of inspiration for her creativity. Not letting 2020 get the best of her, Teri chose to go on an adventure that changed her outlook on life. She and her husband, Bruce, rode a tandem bicycle across the United States from Astoria, Oregon to Washington DC, successfully raising money for Toys for Tots. She learned she is stronger than she realized and capable of anything she sets her mind to. Teri graduated from UNC Greensboro with a multitude of degrees – majors in Elementary Education and Psychology and minors in Math and Sociology – she just couldn't settle on one thing! While homeschooling her four children, she began her writing career by focusing on small businesses, writing articles, blog posts, and website content. During this time, Teri published five nonfiction self-help books dealing with real estate and finance, receiving "First Runner Up" in the Eric Hoffman Book Awards for 301 Simple Things You Can Do To Sell Your Home Now, finalist in the USA Best Books Awards for How To Open and Operate a Financially Successful Redesign, Redecorate, and Real Estate Staging Business and for 301 Simple Things You Can Do To Sell Your Home Now, and Honorable Mention in Foreword Magazine's Book of the Year Award for Private Mortgage Investing. In 2017, after finally getting out of an emotionally abusive 14-year marriage, Teri began dabbling in fiction, a lifelong dream. Upon winning the First Annual Anita Bloom Ornoff Award for Inspirational Short Story for a piece about her grandfather, she began writing in earnest, and published her debut novel in 2022, Sunflowers Beneath the Snow, a historical fiction set in Ukraine. Her second novel published in 2023, An Enemy Like Me, takes place during WWII. Her latest novel, Daughters of Green Mountain Gap, a generational story about Appalachian healers came out in January 2024. In June 2024, her short story, The Youngest Lighthouse Keeper, came out in the anthology Feisty Deeds: Historical Fictions of Daring Women. Her latest book, 10 Little Rules for a Double-Butted Adventure (Feb 2025), is an inspirational look at the life lessons she learned riding across the United States on a tandem bicycle. In April, her first children's book, Little Lola and Her Big Dream launched. Teri is a wife, mother, grandmother, and author who loves word games, reading, bumming on the beach, taking photos, singing in the shower, hunting for bargains, ballroom dancing, playing bridge, and mentoring others – especially youth and women who are having trouble discovering their worth. To find out more about Teri, you can check out her website at https://terimbrown.com/.

Melinda Wenner Moyer, author of the new book Hello, Cruel World! joins me to break down the most essential skills kids need to thrive in today's complicated times. Together we explore: The three powerful themes Melinda saw again and again in her research and how you can tap into these to help you be more effective in your parenting. Practical and realistic ways to help kids feel truly seen and heard. How slowing down, staying curious, and fostering a growth mindset isn't just for kids, but for parents too. The surprising power of guiding children to discover answers on their own—and how this can actually build critical neural circuitry in their brains A simple, impactful question you can ask your child to help them reflect and learn to trust their own judgment. The critical yet often overlooked role of self-compassion in mental health, and the three key components of self-compassion every parent should know. What it really means when kids say things like “I hate myself” or “I shouldn't be part of this family,” and how to respond with empathy. If you've ever felt overwhelmed by the pressures of modern parenting or worried about helping your child manage their feelings and decisions, this episode offers research-backed, actionable wisdom you won't want to miss. Pat Winer's journey through the towing industry reveals a career marked by innovation, service, and an unwavering commitment to community. From his humble beginnings in the paint department at Challenger Wrecker Manufacturer in the early 1980s, Pat shares the fascinating evolution of his career alongside the technological advancements that have shaped modern towing.Working under industry pioneer Bill Bottoms at Challenger, Pat witnessed firsthand how manufacturing excellence and thoughtful design could transform an industry. He describes the state-of-the-art facilities where an overhead chain-link system moved parts between stations – a testament to the ingenuity that has always driven the best in the business. As the wheel lift revolution took hold in the mid-80s, Pat found himself at the epicenter of change, watching as demand for add-on wheel lifts grew so intense that "guys were waiting in line to get them."Perhaps most compelling is Pat's creation of Tow Trucks for Tots in 2007, an initiative born from a simple yet profound desire to transform the somber processions of tow trucks at industry funerals into something joyful and community-focused. What started as a local parade has grown into an annual tradition that has broken Guinness World Records, delivered toys to children affected by economic hardship and natural disasters, and even inspired similar events internationally. The friendly competition with the French Towing Association, who now hold the record with 491 trucks, only serves to benefit more children in need.Today, as District Sales Manager for Landau Corporation, Pat continues to champion innovation with new trailer designs featuring 10-foot-1 spread axles and expandable capabilities reaching 61 feet. His humility shines through when discussing his Hall of Fame induction, crediting his entire team for the success of Tow Trucks for Tots. For those interested in learning more or touring the Landau factory, Pat welcomes contact at pat.winer@landoll.com or 630-878-9837. Join us for this inspiring conversation that demonstrates how dedication to craft, community, and continuous improvement can create a lasting legacy in the towing industry.

This week's Ticked Off Tuesday is full of high-stakes complaints from a breakfast wrap betrayal to a lighting company leaving someone lit up for all the wrong reasons. Jared reads your most frustrating TOTs and shares one of his own: a restaurant review disguised as a love letter to the perfect bite (and an ode to not boarding the SS Disgusting).A dieting betch gets charged full price despite removing half the ingredients, a listener questions the utility of GPS when dispatchers still play the “sometime between 8 and never” game, and a homeowner wonders if asking for a bigger discount on mismatched LED lights makes her unreasonable… or just too bright for her good.Plus, Jared breaks down his vision of a “healthy, happy sandwich” and explains how each bite keeps him from drifting off to sea with the rest of the breakfast mistakes. No numerical ratings here, just one man's 1000-word review full of nuance, complaints, and admiration.Follow on Instagram for sandwich pics and join the resistance against unthoughtful bites!
