There is a type of children's book that we haven't talked much about here in twelve years of Read-Aloud Revival. But it's one that almost anyone who has spent time with babies knows well: board books.Board books are how so many of our kids meet stories and books for the first time. They're often the first books babies and littles are able to really get their hands (and mouths!) on, and experience touching the pictures and turning the pages for themselves. So today, we're going to do a bit of a deep dive on board books, and I couldn't think of a better person to join me for this than bestselling author and illustrator Tabitha Paige. I walk you through the origin story of the event: how Jim Shooter and Marvel teamed with Mattel to essentially build a 12-issue crossover whose primary job was to sell action figures. I explain what a "maxi-series" is (think a limited-run event with a defined beginning and end) and why having so many heavy-hitter characters in one place was innovative and risky back in 1984. I share my own personal memory of hunting down issues in Moncton, trading comics with friends, and the way certain character moments — like the Black Costume for Spider-Man, Galactus' motivations, and the Molecule Man's surprising emotional arc — stuck with me years later. Then I shift into critique mode: the good, the awkward, and the “what were they thinking?” moments. Lee Gregory, like many of us, loves our Star Wars figures and would love nothing more than to break them out from time to time and recreate our favorite scenes. Regardless of what side of the Atlantic you call home, you know that Kenner and Palitoy only had the means and time to create a certain number of playsets during that time. So Lee has gone to work, creating new playsets, using some very similar techniques and design constraints and has produced a number of very amazing and authentic looking settings, from the plastic bases, to cardboard backings and boxes that any collector would love to have as part of their collection.Lee has been on my bucket list to talk to and it was a great conversation about the toys that never were, but now can be, as well as a little football talk.
