Well, it's the story that's got everyone talking - former Prince Andrew was arrested on Thursday morning UK time on suspicion of misconduct in public office ... The arrest follows allegations that he shared confidential government material with the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. He is the first senior British royal in modern history to be arrested. He has since been 'released under investigation' with King Charles saying in a statement that, "the law must take its course." So, what will this mean for the monarchy moving forward? Dr Grant Morris spoke to Jesse.

In this episode of Big Blend Radio's "World of Art Podcast," artist and art historian Victoria Chick continues the Evolution of Art Materials series with a colorful deep dive into paint. The conversation explores the historical evolution of paint, from ancient mineral pigments and plant-based dyes to modern synthetic options. Victoria explains how early binding agents such as egg yolk and milk were used, the role of glazes in oil painting to enhance depth and luminosity, and how limitations in materials often sparked creative breakthroughs. The episode also examines the relationship between art, science, and technology, comparing traditional painting techniques with digital art creation and emphasizing why understanding art materials is essential in education and creative practice. In this episode of Big Blend Radio's "World of Art Podcast," artist and art historian Victoria Chick launches a new series exploring the Evolution of Art Materials, beginning with a deep dive into artist brushes and bristles. The conversation traces the journey of artist tools from ancient times to contemporary practice, examining how natural and synthetic materials have shaped painting techniques across cultures and centuries. Victoria discusses the tactile relationship between artists and their tools, why painters often remain loyal to familiar materials, and how technological advancements continue to influence artistic expression. Listeners are invited to appreciate the craftsmanship, history, and experimentation behind the brushes artists use—and how understanding materials deepens our connection to art history itself. GM Andy Soltis is a U.S. Chess Hall of Famer, prolific author, and longtime Chess Life columnist who has left a lasting mark on American chess while balancing a decades-long career as an editor at the New York Post. His recent memoir, Deadline Grandmaster, retraces those parallel paths and shares remarkable stories such as playing a 16-year-old Vishy Anand, meeting Mikhail Tal, corresponding with Irving Chernev, and unknowingly crossing paths with Bobby Fischer. In our conversation, Andy revisits several of these moments and reflects on the challenges of chess improvement. We explore why players plateau, how to identify their own chess styles, and what today's players can learn from history's greats. Donald Trump is doubling down on the "It's not my signature" excuse regarding his troubling birthday message to convicted sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein. The original letter from Trump to Epstein was included in documents released by the House oversight committee. When the Wall Street Journal released details of the letter in July, Vice President JD Vance said it wasn't real. Now that its reality is no longer in dispute, (the original was held by Epstein's estate) the President and his supporters are denying it's his signature, despite multiple examples of his signature at the time that match. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt went so far as to say the White House would support an expert review of the signature. Who would trust a handwriting expert called by the White House? Yesterday, NBC asked Trump about the letter and he replied that he wasn't going to comment on something that's a dead issue...oh but this issue is very much alive and is haunting Trump daily. We welcome presidential historian and political analyst John Rothmann to the show. We'll ask him about Russian drones violating Polish airspace and Trump asking the EU to slap high tariffs on Russia to apply more pressure for an end to war with Ukraine. We'll air a conversation Mark had with Gregory Lyakhov. At 17, he's the youngest nationally syndicated columnist in the US.

How to Care for Oil Paint Brushes Properly Taking good care of your oil paint brushes is essential to ensure they last a long time and maintain their performance. A common misconception among artists is that washing brushes with water is an effective way to clean them after using oil paints. In reality, water is the worst way to clean your oil paint brushes, and here's why. When you clean oil paint brushes with water, especially after using turpentine or turpentine substitutes, it causes a chemical reaction that results in a gummy residue forming at the base of the brush hairs. This residue is extremely difficult, if not impossible, to remove and eventually damages the brush by clogging the hairs, affecting flexibility and performance. To preserve your brushes, it is crucial to avoid introducing water until you are completely done with the brushes. Instead, start by cleaning your brushes in turpentine or a turpentine substitute. Turpentine dissolves the oil paint effectively without damaging the brush hairs. Once you have wiped the brush to remove as much paint as possible, the next step is to dip your brushes in clove oil. Clove oil acts as a slow drying retardant, meaning it keeps the brush hairs wet and pliable for a longer period, allowing you to reuse them without the paint drying and hardening on the bristles. This also means that if a little clove oil mixes with your paint during reuse, it will not damage the paint's quality because clove oil eventually dries. Here is a recommended step-by-step process for cleaning and preserving your oil paint brushes: 1. Immediately after painting, clean your brush in turpentine or a turpentine substitute to dissolve the oil paint. 2. Wipe the brush off using a clean rag or paper towel to remove excess solvent and paint. 3. Dip the brush into clove oil and allow it to soak, which will keep the hairs moist and ready for reuse. 4. When you're ready to paint again, wash the brush thoroughly to remove the clove oil and turpentine so that you start with a clean brush. Maintaining this routine ensures that your brushes never come into contact with water during the cleaning process until you are finished using them for the day. This prevents the formation of gummy residues and greatly extends the lifespan of your brushes, preserving their shape and flexibility through normal wear and tear. This method is especially recommended for all types of brushes, but it is particularly important for high-quality brushes such as those made from squirrel hair or camel hair, which can be delicate and expensive. Proper care using turpentine and clove oil ensures you get the most out of these premium tools. In summary, avoid washing oil paint brushes directly with water, and instead use turpentine for cleaning followed by clove oil for preservation. This approach keeps brushes supple, prevents the buildup of residues, and extends their usability, helping you maintain a professional painting toolkit over many years. Art Wank

Send us a textIn this episode of the Art Wank podcast, we speak with Australian artist James Drinkwater, known for his vibrant paintings, sculpture, poetry, and music. Drinkwater, originally from Newcastle, NSW, has built a reputation for his layered, gestural works and multidisciplinary practice. He won the Brett Whiteley Travelling Art Scholarship in 2014, which allowed him to work in Paris, and he has been a finalist in the Wynne and Dobell Drawing Prizes multiple times. Our conversation explores his deep connection to place, his creative experiments with dance and theatre, and the impact of his time in New York with Julian Schnabel.A significant part of our discussion centres on Drinkwater's collaboration with MIMA Lake Macquarie in 2019, where he was commissioned to create the sets and costumes for a contemporary ballet titled Storm Approaching Wangi – and Other Desires. The ballet was inspired by the watery landscapes around Lake Macquarie and the Australian modernist painter William Dobell. Drinkwater didn't just design the visuals; he also performed on stage, collaborating with choreographers Skip Willcox and Belle Beasley, and composer Joseph Franklin. This project was an opportunity for Drinkwater to translate his painterly language—texture, gesture, and colour—into a dynamic, physical space, extending his creative practice beyond the canvas. He reflects on how the experience allowed him to think about movement and space differently, enriching his approach to making art.We also delve into Drinkwater's time in New York, particularly his 2022–2023 residency at Julian Schnabel's property on Long Island. Schnabel, famous for his plate paintings and maximalist style, invited Drinkwater to work in his studio space. This intense, seven-week period inspired Drinkwater's exhibition American Salt – Montauk to the Bowery, which explored themes of memory, landscape, and artistic legacy. Drinkwater drew parallels between his own experiences in New York and those of Dobell, who had also found creative energy in the city. Although Dobell's time there was fleeting, Drinkwater sees the connection in the way both artists absorbed and transformed their environments into their art. Finally, Drinkwater shares his reflections on the interplay between disciplines in his practice, including a mid-career survey exhibition in Canberra. He speaks passionately about the importance of collaboration, travel, and memory in shaping his work. The Department of Veterans Affairs' acting chief information officer doubled down on the agency's reshaping of its IT workforce, telling lawmakers in a Monday hearing that change is “challenging” but “necessary.” Eddie Pool told members of the House VA's subcommittee on technology modernization that the agency's Office of Information and Technology (OIT) is pushing forward with workforce reductions as the division increasingly turns to automation and other technology modernization efforts. “This reorganization, reallocation of positions, is designed to cut bureaucratic overhead, accelerate decision making and focus every OIT position on delivering secure, reliable and modern IT solutions to improve veterans' lives,” Pool said in opening remarks at the hearing. Subcommittee Chair Tom Barrett, R-Mich., lauded the VA OIT's “smarter, not bigger” strategy in its fiscal 2026 budget request, asking Pool if technology improvements can alleviate the need for manual, human processes. “Absolutely,” Pool responded. “It is about automating what we can automate.” In its fiscal 2026 budget, the VA OIT requested funding to support approximately 7,000 full-time equivalent employees, marking an 11.7% decrease from its fiscal 2025 budget request, according to Carol Harris, the director of information technology and cybersecurity for the Government Accountability Office. Former White House national security adviser Mike Waltz brushed aside criticisms Tuesday that he put sensitive military operations at risk by holding discussions about military strikes in a Signal group chat, claiming the app's use was authorized by the federal government's top civilian cyber agency. In a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing, Waltz — who has been nominated to represent the U.S. at the United Nations — was pressed about his short tenure as President Donald Trump's top national security official. In particular, he was grilled by Sen. Chris Coons, D-Del., for his use of the end-to-end encrypted messaging application Signal to coordinate with other officials over airstrikes on Houthi rebels. While much of the initial attention was focused on Waltz adding journalist Jeffrey Goldberg to the chat, national security experts were also aghast by government officials at the highest levels coordinating highly sensitive military operations using a free application. The incident is widely viewed as contributing to Waltz's departure just months after leaving Congress to take the role, and his subsequent shuffling to a new nomination at the U.N. “The use of Signal is not only … authorized; it was recommended in the Biden-era CISA guidance,” he said. Waltz was referencing a piece of 2024 guidance put out by CISA on mobile security. He later read from a portion of the guidance, which recommended using “only end-to-end encrypted communication” and to “adopt a free messaging application to secure communications that guarantees end to end encryption, particularly if you are a highly targeted individual, such as Signal or other apps.” The Daily Scoop Podcast is available every Monday-Friday afternoon.
