Capital Ideas Media publisher Mark Bunting talks to comedian and actor Dave Merheje, a late blooming success after nearly 20 years honing his craft. The 2019 Juno award winner for Best Comedy Album, Merheje opens up about his childhood as the son of naturally funny Lebanese immigrants, his comedic influences, internal struggles, why he cried when he got his first Netflix special, and how getting mugged in Los Angeles led him to find his authentic onstage voice.
EITM interviews Ramy Youssef, Steve Way, & Dave Merheje
Dave Merheje won the Juno award for best comedy album with his 2018 release “Good Friend Bad Grammar.” I've been hoping to interview Merheje since I first saw him perform a killer set at the Winnipeg Comedy Festival. His rhythmic comedic style celebrates family and personal frustrations that truly spoke to me, not only as a fan of comedy but more significantly as a father and a son. He's on the Netflix special "Comedians of the World." Watch for his upcoming regular appearance in the Hulu show “Ramy,” with Ramy Youssef, which starts streaming April 19. Follow Dave on Twitter. We look back at highlights from our shows in 2016. Clips from guests Dino Archie, Byron Bertram, Jason Bryden, Sophie Buddle, Sara Bynoe, Jeff Cooper, Grahaeme Cowie, Ivan Decker, Glen Foster, Jessica Holmes, Caitlin Howden, Paul Hooper, Shauna Johannesen, Sean Kent, Julie Kim, Simon King, Dave Merheje, Camille Mitchell, Tim Nutt, Rob Pue, and Mike Storck.
Dave Merheje is a Toronto comic living in L.A. but representing the YQG on his headware. It's all very confusing. We talk about Catholic saints, rap and hip-hop, Winnipeg, ethnic comedy shows, the good and bad of Justin Bieber, and horrible gigs.
Dave Merheje developed his comedy on the mean streets of Detroit. Throughout his forays down south, the Windsor native was given some tough love by the border guards and had a couple of run-ins with firearms. The payoff? Winning the Irwin Barker Homegrown Competition at Just For Laughs and being recognized by a stripper.
