Free Expression Under Fire from the FCC

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has long exercised significant authority over broadcast media beyond what is typically tolerated under the First Amendment. Under various chairs and presidential administrations, the FCC has overstretched its authority. Recent actions have drawn particular attention, such as when Chairman Brendan Carr publicly pressured and threatened to punish ABC/Disney over a comment on Jimmy Kimmel Live. That incident does not exist in isolation, with friction between the commission and broadcasters steadily rising over the past 12 months over myriad issues including the unprecedented early review of ABC's broadcast licenses. The FCC points to the public interest standard and policies such as news distortion and the equal-time rule to justify its actions. How should such policies be considered in light of today's media ecosystem and the broader values of free expression? Please join us for an event that will discuss how the FCC's actions toward broadcast media are affecting free expression, what challenges these actions might face in courts, and how policymakers could prevent such abuse. Hey Streetwalkers. This is a throwback episode with Mighty Mighty BossToneS frontman & founding member of The Defiant Dicky Barrett.Dicky first appeared as guest for the 400th episode on 2.26.24 It was such a compelling & fun episode, l decided it needed to be re-visited!Enjoy this throwback episode, tell a friend, and thanks for listening! Dicky BarrettTake a walk with me down Fascination Street as I get to know Richard Michael Barrett. Better know as Dicky; he is also called The Godfather of Skacore. Dicky is former frontman and founding member of The Mighty Mighty BossToneS, and current frontman and founder of the new super group The Defiant. In this episode, we chat about how he came to be the bow-tied plaid leader of The Bosstones, and some of the cool things he got to do along the way. He tells the story of getting to open for The Misfits while he was still in high school, as well as getting to play Fenway Park many years later. Dicky shares stories of meeting and befriending Adam Carolla and Jimmy Kimmel when they were just getting started; and some of the fun things he got to do as a result of these friendships. Adam uses Bosstones' songs in the intro and outro of his Adam Carolla Show podcast; and Dicky was the announcer for Jimmy Kimmel Live for nearly 20 years. Of course, I ask Dicky if I can play my all time favorite MMB song... and he says yes! Obviously we discuss how MMB ended up in the cult classic iconic film Clueless, and what made them decide to do it. Next, Dicky explains what happened between him and the other Bosstones, as well as his relationship with the Jimmy Kimmel Live late night show. Finally, we discuss his new band The Defiant. This super group features former members of: The Mighty Mighty BossToneS, The Offspring, Smash Mouth, Street Dogs, and The Briggs. The Defiant is: Pete Parada, Greg Camp, Johnny Rioux, Joey LaRocca, and Dicky Barrett. Their debut album "If We're Really Being Honest" was released in late October 2023. Naturally I ask him if I can play my favorite song from this new album.... and Dicky said yes again! I had such a blast talking with Dicky, I think we are best friends now! Don't be surprised if you hear more from Dicky on Fascination Street Podcast. This dude is rad as balls. Thanks Dicky! And thanks Mike Dawson, you know what you did.

Youth unemployment is at crisis levels, and we're at the stage where Britain spends more to support jobless young people than it does on education. Naomi and Alex look at the latest NEET figures and Alan Milburn's interim report on youth unemployment, which makes for sobering reading. Plus, as Britain and Poland ink a defence agreement, is Europe building a 'NATO within NATO' defence against Russian aggression and Trumpian vandalism? And, because this is a British show, we discuss the weather and how to survive it. Is it summer? Ep. 589: NRB v. FCC, Embryo Donations, New SBC Attendance Numbers

MinistryWatch Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later May 7, 2026 6:49

Christina Hello, everyone, I'm Christina Darnell, the managing editor of MinistryWatch. Welcome to the MinistryWatch podcast. In today's extra episode, I talk with Warren Smith about some news items that are slightly (even significantly) outside of our normal charity and philanthropy “beat.” So, Warren, what's up first? Warren  The National Religious Broadcasters (NRB) has formally asked the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to investigate comments aired by Jimmy Kimmel during the April 23, 2026, broadcast of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” Kimmel's comments were, as a lot of his comments are, thoroughly tasteless. But if they are not protected speech, clearly covered by the First Amendment, then we are all in trouble. Christina And you think it is particularly ironic that the NRB is filing this complaint. Warren I do, because the NRB claims to be a champion of free speech.  The organization claims to be a “nonpartisan, international association of Christian communicators” whose mission is to “protect the free speech rights of our members to speak Biblical truth by advocating those rights in governmental, corporate, and media sectors.” But in recent years, some of its largest members, and the organization itself, has been little more than an unpaid public relations arm for the Republican Party. Christina There was also news this week about a little-known arena of pro-life work: embryo adoption, sometimes called “snowflake adoption.” Warren The National Embryo Donation Center (NEDC) just announced the addition of two new affiliate clinics, bringing its embryo adoption and donation services closer to families across the country. Dr. Craig Sweet of Embryo Donation International, will serve as the NEDC's affiliate physician in Fort Myers, Florida, and Dr. Valerie Shavell & her physician partners of The Fertility Center will serve in Grand Rapids, Michigan, with each performing frozen embryo transfers for NEDC patients in their respective regions. Christina Embryo adoption is often described as a “life-affirming” option because it gives embryos a chance to be born rather than destroyed. Embryos have been donated from all 50 states. Warren Recipients have traveled from across the United States, U.S. territories, and about a dozen foreign countries, including as far away as China, to participate in the program. The NEDC's website is www.embryodonation.org. Christina We have another abortion related story this week. Warren In the years since Roe was overturned, the number of abortions has grown to record levels, with two-thirds of them being chemical abortions. Christina The recent Supreme Court decision restoring abortion pill access via telehealth is another huge blow to the pro-life movement, erasing any gains made by the overturning of Roe. Warren This seems a good moment to state what should be obvious, and that is that we will not eliminate abortion by passing laws. We will eliminate abortions when we change the hearts and minds of Americans about abortion. That means persuading people who disagree with us, not beating them into submission to achieve political goals that do not make a difference. Beating people up makes them less likely, not more likely, to listen to you. Thus endeth the lesson. Christina Southern Baptists released new membership data this week. Warren Southern Baptist churches saw sustained growth in attendance and baptisms, but the two-decade membership decline continued in 2025, according to a statement from the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC). Total SBC membership fell by more than 3 percent from 2024 to 2025, dipping to 12,331,954, according to the Annual Church Profile (ACP) compiled by Lifeway Research in cooperation with Baptist state conventions. Christina Fewer members belong to Southern Baptist congregations, but more people are attending worship services and small groups and are being baptized. That seems contradictory. Warren It does. These seemingly contradictory data probably reflect efforts by the SBC in recent years to clean up their roles. They were listing people as members who were, in some cases, dead or who had long since joined other churches. There's also probably a bit of generational difference in attitudes relative to church membership and attendance. Older generations are more likely to be members but not attend. Younger generations are more likely to attend for longer periods before becoming members. Christina On average, nearly 4.5 million people attend a Southern Baptist church each week, while more than 2.6 million participate in a small group Bible study or Sunday School class—both up more than 3% compared to 2024 and up for the fourth consecutive year. Warren Meanwhile, the number of baptisms increased by nearly 5 percent to well over a quarter of a million, marking five consecutive years of growth and surpassing pre-COVID levels. Christina Any final thoughts before you go? Warren It was great to visit with readers and donors in Los Angeles and Jacksonville recently. I will be speaking at the annual convention of the Evangelical Press Association in Nashville next week, and I will be holding a reader lunch in Franklin. For precise location, send me an email at wsmith@ministrywatch.com. I will also be in Dallas and Knoxville later in May. I will be speaking at Summit Ministries in Manitou Springs in June, so I will be doing reader lunches in Denver and Colorado Springs during that trip. Let me know if you would like to join us. My email is wsmith@ministrywatch.com. Christina That brings to a close this EXTRA episode of the podcast. The producer for today's program is Jeff McIntosh. I'm Christina Darnell, along with Warren Smith. Until next time, may God bless you.

In this episode of The Exit, we sit down with Victor Varnado, CEO of Supreme Robot, to unpack his unconventional journey from television producer to tech entrepreneur and IP dealmaker. Victor shares how a simple idea for a video game interface led to a patent, and ultimately, an IP exit opportunity. He walks through the realities of monetizing intellectual property, including how provisional patents work, why solving big problems matters more than effort, and what it actually takes to navigate negotiations, due diligence, and deal structures with major companies.

We also dive into the lessons learned along the way, including the importance of contract protections, the power of warm introductions over cold outreach, and how to properly prepare your IP for sale. Beyond patents, Victor reveals one of the most overlooked opportunities in business today: newsletters. He breaks down his “hybrid newsletter” model, showing how combining products, audiences, and distribution can create scalable, recurring revenue. Whether you are building your first product, exploring an IP exit, or looking to own your audience, this episode offers a practical and forward-thinking playbook for entrepreneurs navigating the modern digital economy.

About the EpisodeOn this episode of The Bandwich Tapes, I sit down with keyboardist, arranger, bandleader, and all-around musical Swiss Army knife Jeff Babko. Jeff is one of those musicians whose career quietly spans an incredible range of musical worlds, from television and touring to studio work and bandleading, and our conversation ends up feeling like a masterclass in how to build a life in music while staying curious and grounded. We start in the present, where Jeff has recently stepped into a larger leadership role on Jimmy Kimmel Live! following the passing of longtime music director Cleto Escobedo. Jeff reflects on what that responsibility means to him and how leading a band in that environment requires both musical preparation and a deep sense of trust and respect for the musicians around you. From there we rewind to an important musical turning point. Jeff tells the story of seeing James Taylor live in college, backed by a band that included Don Grolnick, Jimmy Johnson, Mike Landau, and Carlos Vega. For Jeff, that moment crystallized what “grown-up musicianship” could look like—players serving the music with taste, humility, and deep craft. We also talk about Jeff's time at the University of Miami's Frost School of Music and the lifelong community that came out of those years. That theme of musical community carries into his long-running collaboration with Steve Martin and Martin Short, where Jeff has learned firsthand how musical timing and comedic timing often work the same way. Playing for comedians, it turns out, requires the same instincts as great improvisation.Toward the end of the conversation, we zoom out to bigger questions: legacy, awards, AI, and what actually lasts in a musical life. Jeff shares a perspective I really love: the most meaningful musical moments often aren't the ones captured online. They're the warm-up before a taping, the look between bandmates, or the feeling of someone in the audience connecting with the music in real time.Key TakeawaysVersatility is a career advantage — Jeff's work spans television, touring, arranging, and bandleading.Leadership grows from trust and preparation — especially in environments like Jimmy Kimmel Live!.Seeing great musicians early can shape a path — Jeff's experience watching James Taylor's band left a lasting impression.Musical communities matter — relationships formed in school and early careers often last decades.Comedy and music share timing instincts — playing for comedians requires the same listening and responsiveness as improvisation.Humility sustains a career — serving the music and the band keeps the work meaningful. The most powerful musical moments are human ones — often unseen and impossible to capture online.Music from the EpisodeHead Trauma - Mondo Trio (Jeff Babko, Jeff Coffin, & Vinnie Colauita)International Client - Jeff BabkoFranklin - Jeff BabkoNostalgia is For Suckas - Jeff BabkoAbout the PodcastThe Bandwich Tapes is a podcast hosted by Brad Williams, featuring conversations with musicians, composers, producers, and creative thinkers about their musical journeys. We are so excited to kick off our Interviews at Sea series with DAWES! We had the chance to talk to brothers Taylor and Griffin Goldsmith aboard Cayamo: A Journey Through Song during their 18th voyage in March 2026 in front of a packed audience. The guys have been performing as Dawes since 2009, but the band has been a duo since their 2024 album, 'Oh Brother.' The Goldsmiths have been singing and playing together their whole lives inspired by their musician father, Lenny Goldsmith, who toured as the lead singer of Tower of Power in the 1980s. Taylor was never told it was hard to play guitar or sing, so he just did it. He always knew he wanted to be a professional musician. We talk about the ways his musical career turned out as not quite what he had expected. We also touch on how their singing has evolved over the course of their lives together. Both Taylor and Griff are fathers, so of course we asked about the freedom that comes with priorities changing in their lives and careers – as well as what toys they may have regretted ever letting their kids have. One thing following Dawes around for the past year is the aftermath of the January 2025 Eaton Fire in Los Angeles. Both brothers and their parents suffered immense loss due to the flames sweeping through Altadena, destroying thousands of homes and causing over 30 deaths. Griffin's son was born two weeks after the fire, a month early. Dawes became the musical face of the disaster with an emotional performance on 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!' and opening the GRAMMYs with Randy Newman's “I Love LA” with a veritable supergroup: Sheryl Crow, Brad Paisley, Brittany Howard, St. Vincent, and John Legend. The brothers get into what the experience taught them about healing and reaching a place where this tragedy does not define them. We hear a bit about Taylor's love of collecting first editions and his fear of the comment section and we wrap up with a fun "Which One?" lightning round. Did Barack Obama slip — and then walk it back? In a recent interview with political commentator Brian Tyler Cohen, Obama was asked point-blank: Are aliens real? His response: “They're real… but I haven't seen them.” He followed with laughter, referencing conspiracy theories about extraterrestrials being hidden at Area 51, suggesting such a secret would be impossible to conceal — even from a president. Later, he clarified that he framed part of his answer humorously. But was that clarification damage control? Tonight, Martin and UFO Jack go deeper. We revisit Obama's earlier appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, where he was pressed on the same topic — and we review the exceptional breakdown by investigator Ben Hansen, who analyzed Obama's phrasing, timing, increased respiration, and body language frame by frame. Are we witnessing: Political humor? Strategic ambiguity? Or a carefully managed narrative? Two interviews. Two different contexts. One unanswered question. We'll compare tone, wording, micro-expressions, and consistency — and let you decide whether this was just a joke… or something more.During the show, and authentic post on social media was posted:Donald J. Trump@realDonaldTrump Based on the tremendous interest shown, I will be directing the Secretary of War, and other relevant Departments and Agencies, to begin the process of identifying and releasing Government files related to alien and extraterrestrial life, unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP), and unidentified flying objects (UFOs), and any and all other information connected to these highly complex, but extremely interesting and important, matters.
