U.S. political maneuverings are keeping biopharma on its toes. Tuesday, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. passed a major hurdle as the Senate Finance Committee voted to advance his nomination for HHS secretary to a floor vote of the entire Senate. If confirmed, RFK Jr. could have an impact on myriad regulatory issues, including PDUFA negotiations. In other political news, Donald Trump announced his promised tariffs on Canada, Mexico and China—the last of which could have particular implications for biopharma companies looking to China for promising new drug candidates. Both were subjects of conversation as leading pharma companies—including Pfizer, Merck and Regeneron—reported their Q4 and full-year 2024 earnings. Notably, Pfizer is eyeing deals between $10 billion and $15 billion, while Merck took a 12% stock hit on Gardasil challenges in China and Regeneron issued its first-ever dividends. On the regulatory front, the FDA greenlit Vertex's Jounavx last week as the first new drug for acute pain in more than two decades. Journavx leads a non-opioid pain space that is seeing significant momentum this year, with Tris Pharma, Algiax Pharamceuticals and SiteOne Therapeutics all announcing positive data in the past month. Meanwhile, in obesity news, the U.K.'s pharmacies regulator rolled out stricter guidelines for online pharmacies selling medicines including Novo Nordisk's Wegovy and Eli Lilly's Mounjaro, and an obesity-focused deal inked with Novo last year wasn't enough to keep Omega Therapeutics afloat as the Massachusetts-based biotech revealed it is heading toward bankruptcy. Finally, a new CEO will be taking the reins at Takeda in 2026—but the selection of Julie Kim is an exception in an industry still struggling for gender parity at the top leadership ranks.

Julie Kim, artist, joins me for today's conversation about the many layers of art and creativity. We chat about cultivating a slow approach to art-making, exploring our inner landscapes, designing an inspiring space and more. She also shares about the intriguing process of making your own paint pigments, and her beautiful journey in Peru. Julie Kim is an artist, designer, and pigment worker from Seattle, Washington. In her paintings she explores the movement of light, color, and energy in the spaces where inner and outer worlds overlap. Using natural handmade and synthetic paints, she weaves elements of the material landscape together with the felt and subtle experience, the lightness and density of which are mirrored in her palette. Her curiosity for landscape and pigment has led her to explore mountains, rivers, deserts, and jungles of the world, cultivating a closer relationship with Earth and a deeper understanding of the inner world. Each pigment discovery contributes to her handmade mineral paint palette and informs a vocabulary of shapes that characterize her paintings: wild growth of jungle foliage, fluidity of the wind, crystallized light, and clear horizons. Her paintings bring to light an unseen story, layering dimensions of pigment, landscape, and spirit onto paper. Hey there! I'm very excited to share with you our next guest and my friend, Julie Kim. Julie joins me as we explore our love of writing (and shared experiences in two creative writing courses at UNC), the way she characterizes her personality (and why she considers herself a 'careful' person), why she loves to ask people questions about themselves, her childhood and life experiences growing up, and her relationship to spirituality. Julie and I compare our enneagram types and astrological signs. We open about our experiences with race in America and the unspoken truths that people of color navigate. Julie tells us why she embraces failure in her life, and I learn that she is a dancer! I hope you can relax and enjoy this chat, it truly was a pleasure. Talk soon. --------------------- Hey there, it's Jai! I've been waiting for you to join me. Welcome to Wish You Were Here, the podcast where we open to each other and cherish human connection. College admissions tips from a Harvard graduate [Show summary] Julie Kim shares her journey from growing up as an immigrant daughter to obtaining a Master's of Education from Harvard to now operating her own college consulting company. She shares her tips for getting into Harvard despite low test scores. How following a passion for education led Julie from HGSE to admissions consulting [Show notes] Welcome to the 428th episode of Admissions Straight Talk, Accepted's podcast. Thanks for tuning in. Before we dive into today's interview, I want to mention a free resource at Accepted that can benefit you if you are applying to graduate school. The challenge at the heart of admissions is showing that you both fit in at your target programs and stand out in the applicant pool. Accepted's free download, Fitting In and Standing Out: The Paradox at the Heart of Admissions, will show you how to do both. Master this paradox and you are well on your way to acceptance. You can download the free guide here. It gives me great pleasure to have on Admissions Straight Talk for the first time, Julie Kim. The daughter of immigrants, Julie admittedly didn't excel in high school. However, using a passion project, she was able to secure acceptance first to USC as an undergrad, and then attended Harvard's Graduate School of Education where she earned her Master's in Education in 2015. She founded Julie Kim Consulting, an undergraduate admission consultancy in 2015 and has grown it ever since. Julie, welcome to Admissions Straight Talk. One question that I had right off the bat was, your undergrad degree was in Business Administration and Marketing. Why the pivot to Education for the Master's? Or was that your plan all along? [1:25] That was my plan all along. As you know, there's not a lot of undergraduate majors that students could take advantage of. At USC in particular, they didn't offer an education major but said they allowed a minor. I thought, well, I want to get into business one day and I feel like this is such an applicable skill set in all industries so that's where I started. Even though I was majoring in business, I continued to participate in education related internships and volunteer work and research. How did you know that you wanted to do education all along? [2:22] I always loved teaching. I remember when I was in third grade, I sat my little brother down and I was like, “I'm going to teach you math.” And he was like, “Okay”, because we're only two years apart. So I always loved teaching, and even with my parents, I would always be explaining to them what's going on in the education world and what is the difference between SAT and ACT. I think I was kind of born with this love for education. You attended USC and majored in Business and Marketing, and then you chose to go to Harvard. Did you take some time off in between, or did you go straight? [3:37] I took a year off to prepare for the graduate admissions process. So a year later. How did you prepare for Harvard? [3:57] Studying for the GRE exams, they're so hard. I was actually at the same time taking another master's program through USC teacher education. I was taking classes at USC and then also studying for GREs and participating in a few research opportunities at USC. Oh, and I was also tutoring on the side to make side income. So just doing a lot of teaching, learning a lot about education during that time. To what do you attribute your acceptance to Harvard? [4:33] I really think my passion is what got me into Harvard. Not just saying that I'm passionate about education, but sharing my vulnerable story. I wasn't trying to show Harvard that I knew everything and that I am this perfect person. Instead I really conveyed where I come from as an immigrant daughter and how I didn't have some resources, but I still made it work. And that vulnerability and authenticity, I think that really made the difference because to be honest,
Girlboss, gatekeep, gaslight is GenZ mocking the “live, laugh, love” trope. “Gaslight every moment, Gatekeep every day, Girlboss beyond words." Girlboss refers to a feminist icon, but the term itself containers internalized sexism and misogyny. And, as a Vox article (https://www.vox.com/22466574/gaslight-gatekeep-girlboss-meaning) puts it, “Gaslight” has become the trendy synonym for lying — particularly a strain of lying where someone denies an obvious truth — and “gatekeep” has become interchangeable with discrimination. The three terms - girlboss, gatekeep, gaslight - are typically associated with white feminism, a topic that Julie Kim and Jessica Yu will be discussing in this episode of the ANAYA podcast. The conversation also includes Asian American feminism, BLM and what it means to be in solidarity. Julie is a writer and organizer in Queens, NY. She works in local politics and focuses on issues of gender, immigration, and Asian America. She is the co-founder of Asian American Feminist Collective, which engages in intersectional feminist politics grounded within communities with backgrounds that encompass East, Southeast, and South Asian, Pacific Islander, multi-ethnic and diasporic Asian identities. If you are considering your future career, are interested in learning how to lead a team abroad, or want to know how to win leadership buy-in, this interview is just for you. Julie Kim, Head of International Value Demonstration & Access at Shire, shares incredible tips and advice in this interview. Julie provides key insights about making difficult career decisions, how to navigate cultural challenges in a global role and so much more! Check out this episode and get ideas you can use to take action today. Making Career Choices Career decisions-whether big or small, requires analyzing the benefits and the costs personally. Julie shares how she took a year to evaluate the benefits and possible down side to moving abroad. It is important to have a dialogue early on with your partner/family, so when an opportunity comes up, you are prepared. Do a final check and ask-“what does your gut tell you-will I/we come out better in the end”. Look at your career as a “lattice” instead of a ladder-“think about what experience you want and what are you looking for” and the steps needed to deliberately achieve that role. When considering a career change- think about what experience you want- and determine what you are looking for in a position. If you have an end goal it will help you plan out all of the steps. Look at what experience you need to have to make you a strong leader in an area. Sometimes it requires you to take on roles that are a step back to move forward. You have to be willing to learn the basics if needed in order to advance. Look at opportunities carefully before deciding to make a change. A role that is a promotion may sound great on paper-but if the manager isn’t a good fit and there is another role that is a lateral role but the manager has a track record of helping lift up others it may be better in the long run. Decide what gives you energy and what doesn’t give you energy. Leading Global Teams Keep an open mindset. Don’t assume that speaking the same language means everyone will communicate in the same way Understand culture with teams in different regions of the world and how people give and receive information. Leading global teams requires sensitivities to how different cultures communicate ideas. Choose words wisely. Direct communication in the U.S. is received differently in other countries. Mentors vs. Sponsors Mentors help with situational issues, and day to day experiences. Sponsors advocate for you on your behalf when you are not present. Sponsors will challenge you and make you uncomfortable and push you in a direction you may feel you aren’t yet ready. Sponsors don’t have the time to work on day to day but are there to help with big decisions. Leadership Decision Process One of the biggest challenges for executives is they don’t have a lot of time. Present ideas with clarity. Most people don’t have clear messages and take too long. The story must be clear and have data to back it up. Business cases that have great data but the message isn’t clear may not get approval. Know the people who will be in the room. If you don’t have personal relationship with leaders in the room-leverage your network and understand their point of view before the meeting. The more you understand where they are the better you can make your message relevant to them. Do your homework before you present and be ready to answer questions. Julie shares how she is inspired by hearing patient stories and it makes her want to work harder knowing the impact the work her company has on people’s lives. When we say the word content, MOST of us refer to the container -- a blog post, a video, a podcast. But the audience we aim to serve is after what's INSIDE our content -- the information, the education, the entertainment. So why the heck do brands and marketers spend so much less time focused on the stuff INSIDE the content they create? Stories today from Slack, the fastest-growing business app of all time, and their director of content, Julie Kim. Then, bestselling author Andrew Davis (Brandscaping, Town Inc) pulls from his time in TV production with the Jim Henson Company and Charles Kuralt to teach us how to think more strategically about the stuff we create and how we structure it. What happens when you spend way more time thinking about the stuff INSIDE our work? Julie Kim was positively glowing in this episode. That's right, the standup comedian/brainiac was pregnant. She tells us about her varied interests, from science and engineering to comedy. She also talks about growing up a rebellious chubby kid living on top of a variety store with all the free pop and chips she could eat. This episode brought to you by Lick's Burgers.
