Everybody, say hi to Max Rigano!   Max is a Midwestern native, fitness enthusiast, and a storyteller. As a transgender man, he is an advocate and voice for the trans expansive community who seeks to raise cultural competency and comfortability around the beauty of gender and sexuality. Currently, he works for Yelp as the Saint Louis Community Manager.   We were very touched that he generously agreed to join us to discuss his journey over the past 30 years. He shares the transition that has allowed him to be his true self in his true body. From being a leader in a church where he was perceived as female to now being an open transgender man with a passion for bettering the trans community, he discusses the path that has led him to where he is today. He explains that although loss and hardships took place during this journey, profoundly beautiful and loving relationships with himself and others have grown and flourished in their place. He details his transition timeline, how he and his wife have navigated the changes and the what the next chapters in his story may be.   He was unbelievably transparent and kind as he helped us navigate this space by educating and correcting us to be better allies. He explains how changing language, using correct pronouns and showing acceptance and love can help transgender people feel the comfort that they deserve. Max has a profound awareness of his own personal privilege, which motivates him to advocate for the more vulnerable members of the trans community. He is striving to create a world in which transgender folk can thrive with no barriers, which is something we should all stand behind.    We also chat about: The importance of offering and using correct pronouns The harmful impact of gender dysphoria  How to support trans folk in your community  Resources:  Instagram: @maxsplain LGBTQ+ support organizations: Martha P. What does family look like when biology isn't the main link between people? Chosen family and intentional family can often help fill the gap for trans and queer people when their biological family can't provide the support they need. Sayer, Willow and Kahle talk about being scooped up by their queer family, what pregnancy can look like for trans-masculine humans and those who don't fit in the binary and how to find your people. • Check out the Feed the People Garden Project here: https://www.facebook.com/FeedthePeopleGardenProject/• If you would like to be involved in Willow's work researching reproductive health for queer and trans folks, reach out here: rosen.w@wustl.edu• Check out https://www.stlmetrotrans.org for more info on the Metro Trans Umbrella Group and the work we do

16 July 2016 - We are here in St. Louis at Netroots Nation and, as usual, it's remarkable. On Friday we sat down for a truly wonderful interview with Lady Ashley Gregory, of QT POC STL, and Capella Marissa Huniwalt of the Metro Trans Umbrella Group. Together these two organizations work symbiotically to empower the queer and trans community of St. Louis. The Metro Trans Umbrella Group delivers against their CAVE (Community, Advocacy, Visibility, Education) Priorities in genuinely impressive ways including providing nationally certified trainings to hospitals, universities and community organizations on providing trans related services and on interacting with trans individuals. They have recently also built and opened the first Trans Memorial Garden in the nation. I especially love the quote they have on a sign there, "They thought they could bury us. They did not know we were seeds." Speaking of seeds, QT POC STL grew out of the swirl of emotions following the murder of Michael Brown in Ferguson, MO. The QT POC community needed a place to talk and to organize. From that beginning an organization has grown. As Lady Ashley says during the interview (paraphrased here), "When they go to write history books in the future, Ferguson will figure prominently." There is no question of this and QT POC STL is just one of the examples of how the nation has been forever changed by the activism which was trigged initially by the murders of Trayvon Martin and Michael Brown. This episode of Hopping Mad is exclusively dedicated to the articulate, informative, exceptional interview and we thank our guests. - Carrots! Arliss

Genderqueer activist Andy Semler gave this platform address at the St. Louis Ethical Society on 11/11/2013, as part of National Transgender Awareness Week.  Recording taken from the Ethical Society podcast feed, and shared with our audience with Andy's gracious permission.  "Genderqueer people are gaining increased visibility within a society that doesn't legally recognize our existence, but we are still a minority within a minority. This talk will explore the social, economic, and health aspects of living outside the gender binary in the USA. I will also share from my own "coming of gender" story, as we begin a broader dialog: What can the humanist community do to create a society where people of all genders flourish? Andy Semler is an active member of the LGBT Center of St Louis, the Metro Trans Umbrella Group, and the greater online community of non-binary trans and genderqueer folk everywhere."For more information on the Ethical Society of St. Louis ("A Welcoming Home For Humanists"), please visit ethicalstl.org
