Somehow it's June already and we're back with another episode of Shared Pages. May's book was an Ian pick, and he chose Yoko Ogawa's: The Memory Police. The Memory Police takes place on an unknown island where people periodically forget things such as ribbons, perfume, and so on. However, some people seem to remember things that should have been forgotten and so a mysterious and sinister organization comes and takes those who remember. When the unnamed narrator-a novelist-discovers that her editor, "R" is one of these people who remember things, she decides to hide him. Along with a family friend known only as The "Old Man", they attempt to hold on to what has been forgotten all while navigating what it means to lose memories and even pieces of themselves. We really enjoyed The Memory Police and we hope you enjoy our discussion of the novel! Next month is Ronnie's pick. For Pride, she's chosen, A Dark and Drowning Tide by Allison Saft!
It's a full circle moment on Karma and Chaos as Kail and Becky finally reconnect after weeks of life doing the absolute most. From baby showers and birthdays to therapy breakthroughs and botox, this episode has everything. Kail opens up about postpartum friendship shifts, feeling overwhelmed hosting her baby shower, and how raising a kid with her sister feels surreal. Becky dives into what it means to love someone who isn't a good partner, the emotional toll of being the “energy suck,” and the real talk around step-parenting struggles. Plus, they break down the pros and cons of homeschooling, whether people know how miserable they are, and yes; how many chuggas come before choo-choo. Hear from current and former teens about their experiences of growing up queer. When was the last time you thought about your teenage self? For a lot of us, our teenage years were an uncomfortable time. Sure, there were some good moments, but there were also a lot of confusing thoughts and big emotions that we couldn't figure out. For Pride 2024, we invite you to enter the world of Open Art Space (OAS), MoMA's weekly drop-in program for LGBTQ+ high school students and their allies. You'll hear from different community members about the ways they discovered and embraced their identity as queer people. They discuss what it was like growing up queer, the role of art in their lives, and the places and spaces that played a vital role in making them feel safe.

For Pride month KALW has been airing stories that explore and celebrate the Bay Area's queer culture. But today, we're going back a few decades to a more difficult time when AIDS was destroying the community. We hear the story of one baker who became an unexpected caregiver during this time, and brought relief to those who were suffering.
For Pride month, Krys Malcolm Belc, writer and author of the memoir The Natural Mother of the Child: A Memoir of Nonbinary Parenthood (Counterpoint, 2021), talks about his experience and challenges as a non-binary, transmasculine parent, and how parenting and gender intersect.
The term "pregnant people," while more accurate and inclusive, has received pushback, claiming that the phrase is overly "woke" and erases women. She was shitty. But THE TALENTED MR RIPLEY is a fantastic novel, colored by Highsmith's own hatreds, and her ultimate goals. For Pride month 2023, we're taking a look back at two of John Waters' later movies, Pecker & Cecil B Demented. One of our most iconic filmmakers, Waters at the end of the 20th Century had settled into a more grand statesman of cinema more than simply being a provocatuer. While he never loses his sense of humor, these two films feel more auto-biographical than his previous works, with Pecker focusing on a young photographer and Cecil B Demented following a gang of maverick filmmakers. Brian and Max discuss all this, plus a young Maggie Gylenhaal, praise for Christina Ricci and debate the term "ugly hot."
For PRIDE month Mairi drops a bonus episode where she explores homosexuality and crime looking at one of the most famous trials for homosexuality, that of Oscar Wilde, and right up to the modern day, with the tragic deaths of four young boys, ignored by the police.Support the show

A quick 20 minute banter with Roddy and Joey of the beaudacious rock band "Man on Man" a gay couple who made a great record during the pandemic, and are back with a sophomore album "Provincetown" that will showcase the talent of these guys. Roddy is the guitarist and keyboardist for Faith No More, and Imperial Teen, so, you know you are starting with some top notch talent here. For Pride month 2023, this is an album that musically NAILS IT, and the lyrics are full of great ideas, and lots of gay content. Enjoy everyone.

Nikki speaks to Jack Rolfe about her career, the devastation of missing out on Olympic qualification, her subsequent attempts to escape those memories only to end up in Lausanne, face to face with the five rings at each turn. She gives a fascinating insight into life first playing the sport and her subsequent role as a thought-leader in hockey's adaptation to the digital world for five years and how the sport battles to make its mark in that realm.

On this week's MuggleCast, the hosts take on the most indefensible characters, and figure out what about them gets under our skin. How can we defend the actions of someone like Gilderoy Lockhart or Rita Skeeter? Do we really believe that James Potter matured out of being a bully? And finally, is Umbridge a case of nature or nurture? Join Andrew, Eric, Micah and Laura for a deep look at characters who bug us in Harry Potter. For Pride month, MuggleCast is participating in The Hogwarts Hunt, a fundraiser and scavenger hunt to benefit LGBT charities. We're team Hufflepuff! Visit our social media for more info. Who are the most indefensible characters in Harry Potter? Why do we say that they can't they be redeemed? The hosts unexpectedly discuss a few Ravenclaws and Micah and Laura get nervous. Micah says the Death Eaters would actually approve of the Dursleys' treatment of Harry if they knew. Among the irredeemable characters, which ones do we LOVE to hate and why? Characters like Snape or Umbridge have scenes that are greatly written as to illustrate their motives clearly, and we are shook. Could anything or anyone humanize Bellatrix Lestrange? What allow us to defend some characters, but not others? Their upbringing? Their intelligence and skill? Where do we draw the line? Is Argus Filch a character we understand? Would a Squib living at a magic school always have his attitude? Is James Potter a defensible character, since we see so little of him and when we do he is still that teenage bully of Snape? Do we believe that James would have made a good father and raised Harry without prejudice, had he lived? Debate: Umbridge, Nature vs Nurture? Quizzitch: Which of Umbridge's Educational Decrees (what number) barred teachers from giving the students any information that was not related to the subjects they were hired to teach? Andrew was on Swish & Flick podcast discussing the history of Dumbledore's sexuality! Check it out here or wherever you listen to podcasts! For Pride month this year, we decided to review a great LGBTQ+ horror movie. Saying Stranger By The Lake is a horror movie, is pretty generous, since it is more on the light end of thriller. But what it lacks in horror, it makes up in homoeroticism. Artwork by Dusting Goebel (@dgoebel00 on Instagram) Synopsis At a French lake, Franke spends his summer days cruising for gay sex. Along the way he befriends the pudgy middle-aged depressive Henri who is ostensibly bisexual, but has no interest in sex, but provides good conversation. Franke sees a gay French Tom Selleck-type at the lake named Michel and is instantly attracted to him. Michel seems to be involved with someone else, but when Franke spies Michel drowning his presumed boyfriend, Franke decides to shoot his shot. https://youtu.be/kG4py4khTEM Review of Strange By The Lake (L'inconnu du lac) This is an understated erotic thriller that could also be considered a black comedy. It explores themes of lust, relationships, commitment, loyalty, hot hot steamy cock. This was on a list of “gay horror films” that I came across, and I hadn't heard it, but the set up seemed intriguing. A man witnesses a murder, but decides “doesn't matter, still got laid”. It is an engaging thriller, but calling it a horror movie is being pretty generous with the genre. The last 10 mins or so could be considered horror, but the bulk of the film is mostly drama. By drama, I mean explicit, unsimulated gay sex. To say that there is gay sex in this movie is an understatement. It is basically soft core gay porn for a good 60% of the film. In past episodes, we have advocated for more full frontal male nudity, and more sex in films. Well, be careful what you wish for. I'll admit that most of my enjoyment came from knowing that I was forcing David to watch this, because if I had known how hard it would go, I probably wouldn't have suggested it. However, I actually really liked this film. Like I said it is understated in that it says a lot with a few words. The script is very tight, and the characters intriguing. The acting is great, and a lot is communicated through glances and silences. Score 7/10 Stranger By The Lake Add it to your collection or rent it now.Click here to buy

In this talk, Prof. Veronica Ogle (Assumption University) helps us understand how Augustine sees the earthly city as parodying the city of God, a process that produces illusions and lies that entrap its inhabitants in a nihilistic dreamworld. She explores how Augustine's critique of the earthly city uncovers the self-love and lust for domination that drove Roman thought and history. But Augustine places his unmasking of Rome's injustice within a broader framework aimed at reorienting this self-love to a love of God. He argues that we can live in the political sphere without participating in the earthly city—as good neighbors whose purified loves make them better citizens.Quotes referred to during the lecture:"We see then that the two cities were created by two kinds of love, the earthly city was created by self-love reaching to the point of contempt for God, the Heavenly City by the love of God carried as far as contempt of self."Augustine, City of God 14.28"He refused to be subject to his Creator, and in his arrogance supposed that he wielded power as his own private possession and rejoiced in that power. And thus, he was both deceived and deceiving because no one can escape the power of the Omnipotent. He has refused to accept reality and in his arrogant pride presumes to counterfeit an unreality.Augustine, City of God 11.13“Pride is a perverted imitation of God. For Pride hates a fellowship of equality under God, and seeks to impose its own dominion on fellow men, in place of God's rule. This means that it hates the just peace of God and loves its own peace of injustice.”Augustine City of God, 19.12“I know how great is the effort needed to convince the proud of the power and excellence of humility, an excellence which makes it soar above all the summits of this world, which sway in their temporal instability, overtopping them all with an eminence not arrogated by human pride, but granted by divine grace.”Augustine, City of God 1.prVeronica Roberts Ogle is Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Assumption University. This lecture was presented at the Morningside Institute on April 19, 2022. The Morningside Institute brings scholars and students together to examine human life beyond the classroom and consider its deepest questions through the life of New York City. It's always a risk to post a TalkBack episode from almost 9 years ago without reviewing it first. For Pride this year, I'm taking that risk. Since #IC #107 focused on moments in my past I'm not proud of, interacting with gays without recognizing and checking my ingrained homophobia, I figure this one would have embarrassing elements either way. It is a direct follow-up to the previous TalkBack episode. These two Inappropriate Conversations were intentionally released in the same week originally. There is a connection, along with a follow-up to one story in an episode that would follow a month later. http://www.inappropriateconversations.org/e/107-eulogy-for-homophobia/ http://www.inappropriateconversations.org/e/112-saying-no-to-myself/

For Pride, Morgan and Chels welcome their favorite bee charmer Cor to talk about every queer kid's cinematic rite of passage, queer-coded films! Chels and Cor attempt to give a definition and reminisce about being queer kids before realizing they were queer, and Morgan is the best ally this episode. Then the gals deep dive into three queer films, Morgan brings up the most important fashion moment of the early 2000's, and Chels read a book! Aaron Myers is an African American Jazz musician, he has recently released "The Pride Album", on June 10th, celebrating his race, and sexuality. He is bisexual veteran, author, and music director for an all-welcoming church in Washington DC. His music does not pull any punches in his experiences and fears, and outlook on the current threat he feels on so many fronts. For Pride we hope to give him and the bisexual men in the community more visibility. He sings very politically charged pieces, with no fear in saying how afraid he is. His voice shares so many aspects of the vocalists we have loved and lost. Enjoy his talents, he has many, as an eloquent speaker, and performer. @aaronmyers | https://aaron2.me | instagram | facebook Covenant Baptist UCC Sponsoring this episode for Pride month is Wunderkeks a bakery who is packaging a Pride promotion of their amazing cookies, proceeds go to help LGBTQ youth. For Pride 2021, Brian and Max are revisiting the seminal queer films of their teenage years, better known as the 1990's. We're starting off with The Opposite of Sex, paired with the cheerful But I'm a Cheerleader. In Opposite of Sex a teenaged Christina Ricci walks into a gay man's life and blows it up by sleeping with his boyfriend. But I'm a Cheerleader takes a broad, John Waters-aping swing at not just homosexuality but religion, the suburbs and gender norms. One of these films had Oscar buzz and one was largely panned, and they're seminal in their own right. But how do they hold up?
The Outcast, Rejoined and LGBTQ Representation. For Pride month in June, Jessie Earl's Nerd Out show for Pride.com called 'Star Trek's Accidental Transgender Episode' talked about TNG Season 5's 'The Outcast', in which Will Riker falls in love with Soren, a member of the androgynous J'nai species who the Enterprise arrives to help in the potentially dangerous scientific discovery of 'null space'. Jeri Taylor's script subsequently explores pronouns, gender distinctions, trans issues and the thorny topic of conversion therapy some years before these conversations would enter the mainstream. Earl's episode gets into the positives and negatives of an episode which was never intended by Taylor to cover transgender issues and rather depict homosexuality in Star Trek for, perhaps, the first time ever. Jonathan Frakes commented at the time that by having Soren played by a woman, actress Melinda Culea, it undercut the homosexual relationship intended. With hindsight, however, 'The Outcast' appears to be ahead of the curve in the conversations around being part of the LGBTQ community that are still being debated today. Your host, Tony Black, is joined by Star Trek fans and member of the trans community, Orion Armstrong, to discuss just how has Star Trek approached LGTBQ issues and the community since the 1990's when these ideas first began to be explored within the franchise and the fandom? How do they align with the political standpoint of Gene Roddenberry's utopian future? And ultimately, is fiction's most progressive futurism progressive enough on this issue? Come celebrate Pride month with two of the Funniest and Gayest Guys in DC. This week Paulie is obsessed with “Chaz” Bono’s sex change and if she will get a huge Cock, he’s hoping over 12”. Evan loves the letter from listener where a would be trick tried to convert him to an ex-gay. Paulie reviews the Blake Riley CyberSkin 7X Vibrating Ass and gave it one hard cock off (who thought he was such a top). Evan gets Dicktimized by the super hot and very long Jet Set Men’s Big Dick Society 2 (almost 3 hours of just porn, and hours of extras) and gave it a Rock Hard 4 splats and he also reviewed Titan’s Triage and loves it at 3 ½ splats. For Pride month Evan picks gay MTFT Yehonathan Gatro’s “My Turn” from Israel. One of our Listeners writes in and clues us on a funny site. Check out Lurid Digs (Horrifying Amateur interiors) and see that Paulie is not the only one who loves to look at bad décor.
The sermon preached on February 25, 2007 was given by Rob Willey, Senior Pastor at Harvest Bible Chapel Davenport titled No Room...For Pride and comes from Luke 14:7-11
