Amber Roadcap is the new Executive Director of the LGBT Center of Central Pennsylvania. Roadcap has earned a degree from Penn State Health, and has a background in mental health. She started her career in crisis intervention at Geisinger Holy Spirit Hospital. She's also worked at Malvern Health where she helped to develop a LGBTQ+ based behavioral health program. " I believe that when we are able to meet folks where they are, we are able to best serve. And I'm really huge on that of me just meeting the community where they are, meeting folks, where they are having that background in substance use counseling, behavioral health. I think will lend it to being able to, again, be a connector of resources. With our global population, with any population who is in need of housing. Finding a great therapist. And again, working with our agencies in behavioral health and substance use. And bringing some of the relationships that I've built over the years with me to connect folks." In addition to welcoming Amber to her new role, just this week the center held a ribbon cutting for their new location at 1323 N Front Street in Harrisburg. The LGBT Center of Central Pa has been active for nearly 20 years, and board members believe this new location will provide stability for the folks they serve. "I've been using the term grow forward as we have this new home. We have been here in the community, serving the community for almost 20 years. And I think having our own space and having this beautiful, safe space that folks can come and we want to welcome our allies as well as the queer community to come in. And we want to say, hey, like, what events would you like to see? What groups would you like to see? I've been really trying to focus on listening to the community when we're out at tabling events, or when I'm meeting people and saying, how can your LGBT center serve you best?" Is your nonprofit getting donations from Donor-Advised Funds (DAF)? Whether your nonprofit is seasoned, brand new, or just looking to start accepting donations from DAFs, this episode is for you! I chatted with special guest, Mitch Stein, Head of Strategy for Chariot, a Donor-Advised Fund solution for nonprofits to maximize DAF fundraising.  Mitch shared how he is helping nonprofits leverage the power of DAFs by explaining what they are, why they're important, and how he is breaking down barriers for donors. He also talked about why it's important to prevent costly errors and eliminate administrative challenges so that nonprofits can get the most money from DAFs. This is a great episode for organizations looking for a different way to bring in funding and diversify their revenue streams.   About Mitch Mitch is a social entrepreneur, community builder and impact innovator. He is currently the Head of Strategy for Chariot, a Donor-Advised Fund solution for nonprofits to maximize DAF fundraising. He previously founded a nonprofit marketplace and community called Pond after leaving his role as a VP on Goldman Sachs' Technology Investment Banking team. He's a long-time board member at The LGBT Center of NYC and an active alum of the Startup Leadership Program NYC. Read the podcast transcript here.   Episode Summary In this episode, you'll learn about how nonprofits can leverage the power of Donor-Advised Funds to diversify their revenue streams, including:  Developing a strategy for generalized funds (4:45) Breaking down barriers for donors (5:55) What Donor-Advised Funds are (9:50) Why Donor-Advised Funds can be seen as controversial (12:40) Making it easy to use Donor-Advised Funds (17:30) Preventing costly errors and getting your nonprofit the most money (21:05)  Eliminating administrative challenges (26:40) Adapting an entrepreneurial and innovative mindset (31:50) Creating technology for the nonprofit sector (38:20)   Teasers “You're not too late. It's the perfect time to start leveling up, planning, and developing a strategy around generalized funds.” “Just imagine you had a gift card that you couldn't use. You had to log into your bank account to use your gift card at Starbucks. How likely are you to stop in Starbucks versus knowing how usable the gift card is? You're going to both use it more often and spend more money because the money is already allocated.” “We've worked with about 6,000 nonprofits. We ran an aggregate test across our current customers and over 40 percent of them had an inconsistency with their name or address.”   Resources Connect with Mitch on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mitch-stein/  Visit the Chariot website: https://www.givechariot.com/demo-video  Keep up to date with the podcast: @100degreesconsulting Follow Stephanie on Instagram: @stephanie.skry/  Connect with Stephanie on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/stephanieskryzowski/  Visit the podcast page: https://100degreesconsulting.com/leveraging-donor-advised-funds    Want more of the podcast? Mitch is a social entrepreneur, community builder, and impact innovator. He is currently the Head of Strategy for Chariot, a Donor-Advised Fund solution for nonprofits to solicit, maximize, manage & steward DAF donors and their gifts. He previously founded a nonprofit marketplace and community called Pond after leaving his role as a VP on Goldman Sachs' Technology Investment Banking team. He's a long-time board member at The LGBT Center of NYC and an active alum of the Startup Leadership Program NYC. Key Takeaways:Through the Chariot App, donors with donor-advised funds can now log into their accounts and send grants directly to nonprofits on their websites, eliminating the need for wire transfers or mailed checks.Donor-advised funds are money that's already there. We have to strive to make the process easier and more efficient so that people are better equipped to give to the causes they care about without any hassle.  Ask the board what things they are interested in doing for the organization. A lot of people in the nonprofit space feel underutilized and by tapping these people, you'll be able to get them to be more engaged and invested in the work that the organization is doing. The first step to getting more donor-advised fund fundraising is just to learn a bit more about it. The first step to getting more donor-advised fund fundraising is just to learn a bit more about it. Getting yourself familiar with those statistics and information will make you way more confident to bring that up in a conversation with a donor  “There's $230 billion sitting in these vehicles called donor-advised funds. That means money that has already been set aside for charity, the only way it can be used is for charity, and yet this money is sitting there and not yet helping an actual operating nonprofit organization.” “One of the big innovations of doing this through your own system is you capture that donor name and email immediately so you're not hunting down trying to figure out who this check came from, you can thank them appropriately right away and steward them accordingly.” “Through a better engagement of [board members], you're going to get them more, even like a better fundraiser, they're probably going to contribute more to your organization financially because they feel personally more invested with their time and how they're sharing their talents with the organization. ” - Mitch Stein Reach out to Mitch Stein at:Website: www.givechariot.comLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mitch-stein/  Ask for and receive all you want need and deserve without feeling rejected, ineffective, or pushy. Tomorrow is Intersex Awareness Day 2023, and Lauren has a guest whom she's wanted to have on the podcast ever since she saw her do an Insta Live for Intersex Awareness Day 2022! Jahni Leggett has a number of intersecting identities (fat! Black! someone with ADHD!), but describes her intersex identity as the foundation or "fixed point" that informs all of the others. Jahni was raised as a boy by a single father who had very heteronormative, machismo-tinged expectations for her...but in Jahni's own words, "things started to get funky" around fourth or fifth grade, when she suddenly began to develop breasts. This is only the beginning of Jahni's story, which she tells with humor, charisma, and an *incredible* amount of grace and compassion for those involved along the way. From unexpectedly finding radical acceptance and empowerment through sex work to finally receiving a diagnosis that made everything fall into place, Jahni's story is a true celebration of intersex identity! But that wasn't all: they also said that she shouldn't tell anyone about her "birth defect" because people wouldn't understand, and then closed out the conversation by saying "you'll probably never meet anybody else like you." What Jenn *wasn't* told that day was that she was intersex; that was something she wouldn't find out til over a decade later, when she herself undertook a years-long process of obtaining her hard copy medical records from that very appointment. Lauren is joined by her friend and co-facilitator, Maggie Tielker (Episode 165), for an in-depth conversation with Lane Willis, whom Lauren and Maggie both know from the L.A. LGBT Center's HERstories group! Lane (they/them) is a *phenomenal* kindergarten teacher, who hopes their students will always remember them as "that one that wore the rainbow shoes." Lane knew that they "adored girls" as early as five years old, and also strongly identified with both Twiggy and Elton John. But a rushed marriage to a man at only nineteen years old quashed any chance of Lane exploring either their sexuality or their gender identity for many years. Lane shares how their involvement in an underground swinging community confirmed their long-suppressed attraction to women, and discusses how non-binary YouTubers guided them to their eventual gender epiphany at the age of fifty-two. Plus, Lane tells a story about running into a former student at Pride that will pull on even the sturdiest of heartstrings! If you're interested in any of the groups or workshops discussed during this episode, check out the L.A. Joseph Burgo is a psychoanalyst and author and a co-director of Genspect, an organization representing thousands of parents of children caught up in the ongoing transgender social contagion. The organizatioin now seeks to supplant the World Professional Association of Transgender Health as an authoritative source of guidance for how to deal with gender dysphoric youth. Burgo gave a talk at the Genspect: the Bigger Picture conference in April, held concurrently and in the same city as the annual gathering of the European branch of WPATH, titled Autogynephilia, and the Sexualization of Shame which I published at this Substack last month. We had a conversation presented here in podcast form, soon to be posted at the Year Zero YouTube channel, which I encourage everyone to follow, as I'll be posting videos there more regularly. As always, full transcripts of audio interviews are available to paid subscribers. Year Zero is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. Some excerpts: Wesley YangLet's talk about the standard definition of what autogynephilia is. How did we come to know that this was a condition at all and what is it?Joseph BurgoIt's very simple, it's men's sexual arousal at the idea or image of themselves as a woman. They are what we used to think as fetishistic cross-dressers — men who dress up in women's clothes and get off on it sexually. We know this from Ray Blanchard, who came up with the two types of transsexuals, the homosexual transsexual and the autogynephilic transsexual. Mike Bailey wrote about it, and Anne Lawrence did an exhaustive study on autogynephilia. What I find really frustrating is that these histories are really accounts of a fetish. I think of what Anne Lawrence wrote as the account of a fetish. It's all about the fetish — the history of the fetish, when it appeared, how it affects their sex life and their relationships, with no sense that it means something. I mentioned in my paper that Anne Lawrence had collected all this data, and then deleted the lengthy family histories of these guys, as if it were peripheral to her study. I find it enormously frustrating. But I do think that's the way the mental health profession is these days. The idea that symptoms have meaning, that they might have an unconscious significance that can be sorted out; that it's a way of resolving internal conflict, or it represents some defensive compromise. People don't think that way anymore, I do feel kind of like a dinosaur these days.Wesley YangIn liberal enclaves like this, especially in ones that are surrounded by red hinterlands, they just accept the next new thing immediately. They don't question them. “Yeah, being born in the wrong body? That makes perfect sense to us.”Were you already in tension and crisis with peers and with the school administration as a result?Joseph BurgoWe didn't have much to do with the school administration. I was set back, and I didn't really know how to cope with this. I approached the people that I thought would help. I think I speak for parents all over America who are having exactly this experience: the mental health professionals will tell you that you need to affirm your child's identity, and you're a bigot. We consulted with the endocrinologist just to get an idea of what the reality was of these drugs. I said to her, just in passing, that it's kind of frustrating that I can't find anybody who's willing to look at the mental health aspects of this, what else might be going on. She looked at me with utter contempt, and said, “You're not going to find that.” Like, “What an outlandish idea that there's a meaning to these symptoms.” It was really humiliating and awful.Wesley YangIncredible. You're a credentialed medical professional within this field, a colleague, and you have standing within that community. The consensus had coalesced to the point where your reflexive belief that, “of course, no one is born in the wrong body,” had already made you a pariah.Joseph BurgoTotally. This has a chilling effect on the profession. A number of people at the conference talked about this, and I know lots of people who won't go anywhere near gender because it's just too fraught. Or they've jumped on the affirmative bandwagon and have built practices affirming children, which is unconscionable to me, but they do it.Wesley YangThere are many states that have bans, I guess North Carolina doesn't, on what they call conversion therapy. Meaning if you help a child be comfortable in their own body, you are converting them from this fleeting psychological sense that they might be a member of the opposite sex, which we're going to reify and entrench as if it's their true identity and any deviation from it is a crime.Joseph BurgoWhich is an absolutely insane position. It's actually the opposite of what's true. One of the things I'm very upset about is that a lot of these gender nonconforming kids who would grow up to be gay or lesbian are being converted to trans. That's the real conversion therapy. I used to sit on the board of directors and was an officer and friends with everybody at my LGBT center where I live. When I dove into this space, I gave them an article I'd written and I said, “Do you want me to step down?” These are my friends and they said, “Yes, please go away.” They'd all jumped on board with the trans thing. It's the LGBT Center but now everything is trans. This was my big question: what if they're gay and not trans. And I'm treated like, “Go away.”Wesley YangYou're still able to practice. They didn't cancel and destroy you, or they didn't try to, or they didn't succeed at it.Joseph BurgoThe fortunate thing is that I'm at a point in my career where I have enough money. I'm in private practice. They can't really cancel me. What are they going do to me?Joseph BurgoAnd it justifies any kind of violence on your behalf, coming from you. The book I want to write next is really an update of Lasch. He diagnosed America famously as suffering from a narcissistic disorder. I think what we've got now is a culture that suffers from borderline personality disorder. My most recent essay, Living In An As If World, looks at the way this kind of detachment from reality, this “as if” existence that we're living where you can just make it up as you go along, is leading to detachment from reality, but also, increasingly, borderline behavior where borderline rage, vicious assaults, attempts to destroy people, which is kind of what borderlines are like, is widespread. It dominates Twitter, for sure. Twitter is like nonstop borderline rage all the time. I do think there's a cultural pathology that's gotten much, much worse. Even though I say the tide has turned, I think, “Can we really pull out? Can we pull back when the society is this ill?” I don't know.Wesley YangWhat is borderline personality disorder and how do you see it manifesting in the culture?Joseph BurgoThe personality disorders, particularly borderline personality disorder, are characterized by an unstable sense of self that vacillates back and forth between feeling like you're superior and feeling like you're trash. It's unstable emotional states, frequent outbursts of rage, when you are challenged or when you aren't validated. These people are prone to various kinds of addictions. They have a hard time forming realistic and lasting relationships. They tend to blow up their friendships and family relationships. These features sound, to me, a lot like the way trans rights activists behave. They really are the embodiment of a cluster B personality disorder, particularly borderline personality disorder. If you take it just on the way people respond to one another in space, the way people will be enraged about nothing and take other people down. They will feel slighted and go off in an explosive way. I think social media really is characterized by borderline kinds of communication. This is a public episode. The Women's House of Detention stood in New York City's Greenwich Village from 1929 to 1974. Throughout its history, it was a nexus for tens of thousands of women, trans men, and gender nonconforming people. Some of these inmates—Angela Davis, Andrea Dworkin, Afeni Shakur—were famous, but the vast majority were detained for the crimes of being poor or gender nonconforming. Today, approximately 40 percent of the people in women's prisons identify as queer; in earlier decades, that percentage was almost certainly higher.  In The Women's House of Detention: A Queer History of a Forgotten Prison (Bold Type Books, 2022), writer, activist, and historian Hugh Ryan explores the history of queerness, transness, and gender nonconformity by reconstructing the little-known lives of incarcerated New Yorkers. He makes a clear case for prison abolition and demonstrates how the House of D, as it was colloquially known, helped define queerness for the rest of the United States. From the lesbian communities forged through the Women's House of Detention to the turbulent prison riots that presaged Stonewall, this is the story of a jail, the people it caged, the neighborhood it changed, and the resistance it inspired. Welcome to Reimagining Company Culture, a series discussing emerging trends and priorities shaping the future of workplace culture and employee wellbeing. We highlight thought leaders who are constantly evolving their strategy and can provide insight to folks about how to address new business challenges.  AllVoices is on a mission to create safe, happy, and healthy workplaces for all, and we're excited to learn from experts who share our mission. In this episode of Reimagining Company Culture, we're chatting with Cristina Jones, Chief People and Equity Officer at The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Community Center in New York City (The LGBT Center).  She provides thought leadership, oversight and direction to the overall provision of people and HR services and partners with leaders to develop and implement strategic initiatives that drive and support a highly engaged and performing organizational culture centered in equity and justice. Tune in to learn Cristina thoughts on the current state of the industry, leading with an equity and justice-centered lens, changing the dynamics of HR, and more!About AllVoices In today's workforce, people often don't feel empowered to speak up and voice their opinions about workplace issues, including harassment, bias, and other culture issues. This prevents company leadership from making necessary changes, and prevents people from feeling fulfilled, recognized, and included at work. At AllVoices, we want to change that by providing a completely safe, anonymous way for people to report issues directly to company leaders. This allows company leadership real transparency into what's happening in their companies—and the motivation to address issues quickly. Our goal is to help create safer, more inclusive companies.
