In this new episode of JINS Podcast, I'm joined by Andrew Burt, also known as The Virgin X — an artist, performer, and drag figure whose work is as hilarious as it is haunting, as luminous as it is politically sharp.
A leading author is speaking in Paris about the French capital's ability to draw gay and bisexual people to it. Rasheed Newson's talk is entitled "From Baldwin to Today: Queer Black Expats in Paris". He says that many queer African Americans seeking freedom and creative possibility have come to Paris due to its openness to queer people. Newson is the author of the bestseller "My Government Means to Kill Me", and has a new book is coming out shortly, "There's Only One Sin in Hollywood: A Novel". He spoke to us in Perspective.

Since around 2020, a lot of queer people were finally let in.Into institutions that had ignored us, sidelined us, or treated us as a liability for decades. Suddenly we were wanted. Asked to advise. Asked to represent. Asked to sit on panels, lead staff networks, front Pride content, help “shape culture”. It felt like progress. It felt overdue. And then something shifted. The tone cooled. The questions stopped being curious and started being cautious. Budgets disappeared. Projects were quietly killed. People who had been welcomed for their visibility were suddenly treated as awkward, political, or risky. The same doors that had opened so loudly were slammed shut — and we were left standing on the outside, marked as “other” again. In Part 1 of a two-part interview, we're joined by Kevin Guyan — one of the UK's most respected thinkers on LGBTQ+ inclusion, power and systems. Kevin is the author of Queer Data and The Rainbow Trap, books that don't flatter institutions or offer easy fixes. They ask harder questions about what inclusion actually costs the people being “included”.We talk about what it really feels like to work inside organisations that love queer visibility but fear queer demands. The exhaustion of unpaid emotional labour. The pressure to be grateful just for having a seat at the table. The quiet expectation that you'll soften yourself, simplify yourself, make yourself legible to straight managers who decide — consciously or not — which versions of queerness they're comfortable digesting. We ask the questions that don't usually make it into DEI strategy documents.Do queer people have to perform a role to survive at work? What happens if you don't “read” gay?If you're trans but don't fit the image people expect? If you're a lesbian who doesn't behave the way they think lesbians should? If your identity is complicated, political, messy — or just inconvenient?Kevin talks about the trap of being invited in on someone else's terms. About “gratitude politics” — the idea that we should be thankful just to be tolerated. About how quickly inclusion turns into extraction, and how easily queer people become window dressing for institutions unwilling to change anything structural. This isn't a conversation about rejecting opportunity. Most of us can't afford to. It's about learning how to move through powerful institutions without losing your spine. How to recognise the red flags early. How to tell the difference between real support and rainbow garnish. And how to protect yourself when the political winds inevitably change.Part 2 takes this further — into how inclusion becomes classification, and how data and bureaucracy are now being used to formalise who belongs, who's manageable, and who gets erased. But this first part is about the emotional reality. The whiplash. The silence. The moment you realise the door that opened so confidently can close just as fast. And what you do next.---THIS IS OUTCAST WORLD ---Like and subscribe wherever you get your podcasts and please leave a review. So, Mormonism doesn't have the best reputation on this show. And honestly, given their policies toward queer people, that's not exactly surprising. But, there are some people working within the religion trying to make it more inclusive and open-minded. One of these groups is Understanding Sexuality, Gender, and Allyship - or USGA - a support group that gave queer students at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah a place to find community. And one of the people that went there religiously (see what I did there?) is AJ Romriell, a US-based writer who also happens to be the partner of former Lost Spaces guest Terrance O'Brien Henderson. We got together to talk about why that group was so vital for AJ, and particularly the significance of it being allowed to meet on campus... until suddenly, it wasn't. But I'll let AJ tell you more about that. I'm hearing propaganda that being queer or trans is being "pushed" onto kids. There's an important distinction between having information about actual human diversity available to people and pushing people into making decisions about a very fluid experience. Queer and trans people have existed since people have existed, natural human diversity is more fluid and spectrum than white supremacy culture's binary thinking deluded people into believing. On this week's episode, hosts Tre'vell Anderson and jarrett hill make a call back to Tre'vell's Dis/Honrable Mention of Ncuti Gatwa's British Vogue's Pride Issue feature in Ep #174. In the issue, Gatwa claims he chooses not to label himself as queer, which poses the question: has Pride rebranded (again) to fit those who do not identify as queer? But first, jarrett and Tre'vell discuss the state of employment, or rather unemployment, in media considering the rise of publication layoffs, like Buzzfeed News with 15% staff layoffs and Insider with 10%, just this past April. This month, hosts Christina Cauterucci, Jules Gill-Peterson, and Bryan Lowder reflect on the painful impact of anti-LGBTQ violence and dig into the new possibilities for trans storytelling and filmmaking. First, they talk through their complicated feelings about one of the responses to the shooting at Club Q in Colorado Springs last month: Should queer people be organizing in self-defense, or even arming ourselves for protection? Then they are joined by actress Jen Richards who portrays Barbara in Framing Agnes, a new documentary, directed by Chase Joynt, which is centered on six trans people who were interviewed and treated at a UCLA gender clinic in the 1950s. The film combines reenactments of those interviews with contemporary conversations with trans actors reflecting on how the lives of the people they portray resonate with their own lives. Our own Jules Gill-Peterson has a central role in the movie as a historian and narrator. Items discussed in the show: Season 2 of The White Lotus Christina's Slate piece, “I Think I Found Kyrsten Sinema's Side Hustle” Framing Agnes Gay Agenda Christina: shopping gay, including at The Little Gay Shop and Adam's Nest Jules: “Not a Transition: On Andrea Pallaoro's Monica,” by Eva Pensis in the Los Angeles Review of Books Bryan has created a bespoke cocktail for Outward listeners: the Cuddle Puddle The Cuddle Puddle 2 oz rye 1 oz ginger liqueur ½ oz Fernet Branca or similar Dash of orange bitters Stir the ingredients for a long time over ice, then strain into a cocktail glass. In 1871, Germany adopted an anti-sodomy statute called Paragraph 175. Sixty years later, the Nazis broadened that law—and it quickly became the basis for persecuting Germany's queer population. When World War II ended, Paragraph 175 remained on the books. Dr. W. Jake Newsome joins Jonathan to discuss queer Germans' experiences of Nazi rule and its aftermaths, the history and legacy of the pink triangle, and how this pivotal moment in queer history bears on today. CW: This episode references racist, anti-Semitic, and homophobic ideology, and bodily harm. W. Jake Newsome, Ph.D. is an award-winning scholar of German and American LGBTQ+ history whose work educates global audiences. His new book Pink Triangle Legacies: Coming Out in the Shadow of the Holocaust chronicles the dynamic and inspiring history of the LGBTQ+ community's first international pride symbol: the pink triangle.
