Join AL as he sits down with 2 of of Shropshire's most renown chefs Chris Burt and Liam Tinsley as they discuss the life of a chef, what it means to make food many would consider art and also, what it's like producing high quality dishes at a grand place like Netley Hall. This episode is split into 2 parts.Part one: AL sits down with Netley Hall owner Harrison Poole and Chris Burt, a chef who needs no introduction in many a-kitchen across the county. Chris (along with Liam Tinsley) was tasked with putting together a menu that would welcome everyone to Netley Hall for a food experience they wouldn't forget. This task was met with a couple of considerations. Create homely traditional food and give it a sophisticated twist. Which they have done to perfection. We discuss what it has taken to get to this point.Part two: Liam very kindly prepared AL a beautifully cooked steak along with chips. May sound like a typical dish you could order anywhere, but there is clever twist to the meal that was completely unexpected. For this part we do a "taste-along." AL tastes this wonderful food along with a desert like none he has ever tasted before, while talking to Liam about how life has been at Netley Hall since he and Chris took over.I could sit here and write a full 3 page article about the time I spent at Netley Hall because it was just a marvellous day. This podcast was an absolute pleasure to put together (despite the heat fuelled blunder at the top) Liam you're a wonderful friend and I cannot thank you enough for this!By the way, we filmed a really good vlog to accompany this episode. It will be released on our YouTube channel from 14/12/2022 - check it out!

And on the bay the moonlight lay, And the shadow of the Moon. The rock shone bright, the kirk no less, That stands above the rock: The moonlight steeped in silentness The steady weathercock. And the bay was white with silent light, Till rising from the same, Full many shapes, that shadows were, In crimson colours came. A little distance from the prow Those crimson shadows were: I turned my eyes upon the deck— Oh, Christ! what saw I there! --- You can find the Ancient Mariner Big Read here: https://www.ancientmarinerbigread.com/ --- Copyright: The Arts Institute, University of Plymouth. History of Psychiatry Podcast Series

We are now acutely aware of the effect which viewing or participating in traumatic events can have on people. This last ‘document’ (actually a set of film clips) is about such outcomes. It has no words by the mentally troubled, but it does have the other components that lay and professional alike use to identify mental state: body language, appearance, and behaviour. The symptoms of what First Wold War soldiers called ‘shell shock’ included fatigue, tremor, limb paralysis, pain, breathing problems, nausea, muteness, confusion, nightmares, and impaired sight and hearing. Paralysis and sensory impediments with no apparent biological basis or necessary connection to a specific event were central to the diagnosis. SOURCE: War Neuroses: Netley Hospital, 1917. How should we understand the interwar years in Britain? In Prince of Tricksters: The Incredible True Story of Netley Lucas, Gentleman Crook (University of Chicago Press, 2016) Matt Houlbrook, Professor of Cultural History at the University of Birmingham, tells the fascinating and complex story of Netley Lucas, a character whose fragmented and complex story offers clues to the social changes of the period. Netley’s career as confidence trickster, fraudulent journalist and editor, and creator of counterfeit royal biographies, forms the basis of an engagement with anxieties over class boundaries, the reassertion of social norms, and the nature of the historical source. The book is resplendent with a complex cast of characters and offers a rich portrait of the period. Houlbrook raises the question of how to tell the story of the trickster, if it is possible to capture a life of half-truths and duplicity, and the struggle of historical practice, ultimately causing us to question the possibility of history itself. The book is a fascinating tale, as well as being of interest across the humanities and to the general reader. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
