Today on Sojourner Truth: In a message to white supremacist organizations and leaders of the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, a jury in Charlottesville awarded more than $26 million in damages after finding the white nationalists who organized and participated in the violent rally liable on a state conspiracy claim and other claims. Our guest is Susan Bro, a resident of Virginia, who is the mother of Heather Heyer, the young woman who was killed on August 12, 2017, when a car plowed into a crowd of counter demonstrators who were protesting the Unite the Right rally. Millions of people across the United States are gearing up for an extended holiday weekend. Thanksgiving has been an official holiday in the United States since 1863. Most use the occasion to gather with friends and family. Others volunteer to serve meals to unhoused people. But to Indigenous peoples, it is a day of mourning. Our guest is Shannon Rivers, who is a Native American rights campaigner. We also speak about Christian nationalism with Colleen Thomas, a Washington, D.C. native and the co-convener of the Faith Working Group of the Los Angeles Poor People's Campaign.

Today on Sojourner Truth: The closing arguments happen today in the Ahmaud Arbery case. The verdict in the Kyle Rittenhouse trial is being celebrated by white supremacists who see him as a hero. Meanwhile, Black and Brown people are concerned that the message being sent is that it is open season on people of color; and that any white person can shoot and kill a person of color and get away with it by claiming they felt they were under threat. Although the Rittenhouse victims were white people, people of color understand quite well the implications of the ruling. Our guests are Rev. Dr. Monica L. Cummings and Barbara Arnwine. Rev. Dr. Monica L. Cummings is Assistant Minister at Bradford Community Church Unitarian Universalist in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Barbara Arnwine is a veteran civil rights and human rights leader and advocate. She is currently the President & Founder of the Transformative Justice Coalition. For 26 years, she was the Executive Director of the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Despite being labeled as extremists and terrorists, and being killed, beaten, met with water cannons, and having their protest camps burned down, farmers in India scored a huge victory against the Modi government. Farmers, formally viewed as illiterate and uneducated, have managed to unite and emerge as a force to be reckoned with, in opposition to Modi. They have established pride in being farmers, with organizational skills that movements around the world can learn from. Women farmers in India were visible in the movement. The farmers worked across movements, including a coming together of farmers and agricultural workers. The farmers' protests were noted around the world and support for the farmers included actions in the UK and the US. Sadly, over 670 farmers have died in the movement, and there are demands that a memorial be set up for them. Our guest is Didi Rossi, who has been key in organizing support in the UK and in other countries for the farmers protests, including helping to plan a victory celebration on Friday November 26, which marks the one year anniversary of the farmers strike. Didi has been in direct contact with farmers and their supporters on the ground in India. She is a member of the Global Women's Strike UK.

Today on Sojourner Truth: We focus on the inter-relationship between caregiving and environmental protection. Family unwaged caregivers " most of whom are women, including mothers and grandmothers, and the most impoverished women on welfare " provide care for relatives, children, the elderly and persons with disabilities. Caregivers are expected to pick up the slack without any acknowledgement of the value or resources for their work. The International Labor Office has estimated that women do two-thirds of the worlds work for five percent of the income. And according to a report released by Oxfam in January 2020, women around the world perform 12.5 billion hours of unpaid labor every day. Overall, the work of unwaged caregivers has been estimated to contribute at least $11 trillion to the global economy, according to a Human Development Report. Meanwhile, Indigenous peoples who are protecting the forests and natural farmers around the world are showing the way amid the ongoing climate crisis. Many of them are unwaged caregivers, who are providing both for people and the environment. They point out that in order to address the main cause of the climate crisis, we must transform our relationship with the natural world, beginning with agriculture. The interaction of soil, water and sun generates the water cycle on which the climate and all life depend. This forms part of the broader soil regeneration movement, which can help to reverse climate change by rebuilding soil organic matter and restoring degraded soil biodiversity " resulting in both carbon drawdown and improving the water cycle. Imagine a world where unwaged caregivers would be compensated for regenerating our soul and protecting our planet, instead of money going to governments and corporations. During todays show, we bring you audio from a recent webinar hosted by the Global Women's Strike, titled Care Income for People and Planet: Why Our Future Lies in the Soil. The webinars speakers help us better understand the interconnections between the movement for the rights of unwaged caregivers, and the need to protect our environment through progressive new methods, such as soil regeneration. We hear from speakers around the world, who comment on the need to unite both movements.

Today on Sojourner Truth: One of two contentious and highly-watched court trials in U.S. history are now taking place, both of which will have an impact on race relations in the country. One of them is the trial of three white men accused of killing a young Black jogger last year in broad daylight in Georgia. Ahmaud Arbery was shot on February 23, 2020 by Gregory and Travis McMichael, and pursued by William Bryan. Today, we focus on the trial of Kyle Rittenhouse, the 18-year-old young white man who shot and killed Joseph Rosenbaum and Anthony Huber, as well as seriously wounding Gaige Grosskreutz. Our guest is Kieran Knutson, President of CWA Local 7250 and has been active in protests in solidarity with George Floyd and the Black Lives Matter movement. Kieran is based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Also, on Saturday, November 13, the United Nations Climate Change Conference, known as COP26, came to a close. The conference, which took place in Glasgow, Scotland, has been described by many as a failure and a disappointment. Like many of the decisions that came out of the COP26 climate summit, the final agreement has been widely critiqued as being weak and ineffective. Our guest is Tom Goldtooth, the executive director of the Indigenous Environmental Network. Tom has been awarded with recognition of his achievements throughout the past 40 years as an activist for social change and indigenous-based just transition within the Indigenous and environmental and climate justice movements.

Today on Sojourner Truth, our weekly roundtable. Our panelists are Laura Carlsen and Dr. Gerald Horne. We focus on COP26, the UN Climate Conference that is wrapping up in Glasgow, Scotland. After thousands there, including most world leaders, there is little left to show in the outcome thus far, except for a watered-down mention of coal and fossil fuels. Even though it's watered-down, the United States has refused to sign on to it. This, as the Biden administration bends to the coal and oil lobby, and is opening up more access to oil and gas drilling. "So much for US leadership," complain other countries. China and the US did announce what is seen as a breakthrough. They announced a non-binding agreement, that some see at least as a step in the right direction. The United States and other countries that are mostly responsible for the climate crisis are refusing to pay the funds needed by small islands and other developing countries of the Global South, who are the first to feel the brunt of climate change. They need these funds to stop and reverse the damage to their nations. Meanwhile, back in the United States, two trials highlighting racial tensions are taking place, and comparisons are being made to the history of vigilantism in the country. This, as attacks on teaching the true history of the United States is increasingly under attack, including voters in Virginia electing a Republican candidate saying they are concerned about what they call the teaching of critical race theory in schools. This, they say, is why they opposed the Democratic candidate. Nobel Prize winner Toni Morrison's books have been attacked, with some suggesting that they be burned, including "Beloved" and "The Bluest Eye." What does all of this mean as the nation still refuses to grapple with its history and its present-day legacy. On the international front, we get an update from South of the Border, and we look at what is happening with the migrant crisis in Europe, including what is happening at the Poland-Belarus border. Meanwhile in China, President Xi moves to extend his presidency and to solidify his role in China's history.

The conference has the stated purpose of taking global action on climate change, which is accelerating the environmental devastation of our planet. On Wednesday, the governments of China and the United States agreed to increase climate cooperation over the next decade. The world's two largest CO2 emitters pledged to act in a joint declaration. The declaration claims that both parties will work together to achieve the 1.5C temperature goal set out in the 2015 Paris Agreement. It also calls for stepped-up efforts to close the significant gap that remains to achieve that target. However, the joint statement was very short on details. And without details, no one knows what, if anything, will come out of the U.S. China agreement. U.S. President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping are even expected to hold a virtual meeting as early as next week, according to the BBC. Also on Wednesday, a draft agreement being circulated at the UN climate summit calls on countries to phase-out coal power. However, the draft agreement has been roundly criticized for failing to address the crisis. The UN Secretary General said that as of now, COP26 is on life support. By all accounts, unless something dramatic happens, it seems governments will have once again failed to address the climate catastrophe. Our guest is Souparna Lahiri, based in New Delhi, India. Souparna is the Global Forest Coalition's Climate Campaigner and Advisor. The Global Forest Coalition (GFC) is an international coalition of NGOs and Indigenous Peoples Organizations defending social justice and the rights of forest peoples in forest policies. We also hear from Vijay Kumar Thallam, the Advisor to Government of Andhra Pradesh for Agriculture & Cooperation, and in charge of implementation of natural farming in Andhra Pradesh. Lastly, Patrick Ioakimedes joins us to discuss an upcoming California Poor People's Campaign event focused on environmental devastation.

Today on Sojourner Truth: We are in an emergency. Our planet is experiencing an urgent state of crisis. The environmental devastation of our planet, accelerated by climate change, is getting worse by the day. According to the World Health Organization, climate change is the greatest threat to global health in the 21st century, surpassing even the ongoing and deadly COVID-19 pandemic. Land temperatures have increased about twice as fast as the global average. Globally, 2020 was the hottest year on record, according to NASA. The warmest years in our planets history have all occurred since 2005. Every year, approximately 75 billion tons of fertile soil is lost to land degradation, according to the United Nations. The livelihoods of more than 1 billion people in about 100 countries are threatened by desertification. Heat waves and wildfires are becoming more frequent, intensive, and extensive. Between 2000 and 2016, the number of people exposed to heat waves increased by around 125 million. During this time, more than 166,000 people died because of heat waves. In 2020, the number of wildfires around the world were up 13 percent from 2019, which was already a record year. The World Wildlife Fund estimates that at least 75 percent of all wildfires are caused by human activity. Increased warming in the Arctic and Antarctica has also contributed to melting permafrost, glacial retreat and sea ice loss. On Sunday, October 31, the United Nations Climate Change Conference kicked off the COP26 (Conference of the Parties) in Glasgow, Scotland. Twenty-five thousand delegates from 200 countries are attending, and around 120 heads of state. The conference, which was delayed for a year because of the COVID-19 pandemic, will run until Friday, November 12. The conference is the 26th COP to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the third meeting of the parties to the Paris Climate Accords. Today, a special on COP26 and the urgent state of the environment. Our guests are Tina Gerhardt and Winnie Overbeek. Tina Gerhardt is an environmental journalist and academic. Her work has been published by Grist, The Progressive, The Nation and Sierra Magazine. She is currently the Barron Professor of the Environment at Princeton University. Tina is the author of the forthcoming book, Atlas of Islands in a Rising Ocean. She is covering COP 26 for The Nation and Sierra Magazine. Her most recent article for The Nation is At COP 26, Island Nations Demand Action on Funding and Emissions. Winnie Overbeek has been the coordinator of the World Rainforest Movement (WRM) since 2011, a global network supporting forest-dependent communities in their struggles to defend their territories in Latin America, Africa and Asia. Winnie is based in the Brazilian town of Vitoria in the Espirito Santo state. Before engaging with WRM, Winnie has worked for many years with networks and organizations in Brazil supporting communities affected by large scale tree plantations and other large-scale (agro) industrial projects.
