Our second set from Breakfast of Champions comes chock full of breakbeats from our one and only Rumblemunk. In his words: The set starts with a cool and funky transition track with some well-known vocals to keep folks hooked. I admit: it's hard playing after shOOey. There are literally people hanging from the rafters and dancers all over the stage, and I try my best to keep them interested for as long as possible. The core of the set is an exploration of recent breakbeats that sound minimal, but really are an evolution of the 90s dub sound that traces directly from reggae to drum and bass. The 60-70 BPM of dub double-timed up to high 130s and low 140s BPM forces faster elements like hats and arpeggios to be simplified, but leaves space for really interesting layering when slowed down to 132 BPM. There's a run from 12:30 to 17:30 that exemplifies this layering and progression before dropping back into the more open foot-stompy breaks. I hadn't played it in a while, and was sort of missing the rapid-fire rapping of Eminem, so I dropped in Eminight's Doom, my bootleg of Eminem's Without Me and Timo Maas' Doom's Night. It wraps up a nice run of Plump DJs, Krafty Kuts, and Yo Speed. The final act of the set is a trip back through time to 2004 with deep cuts from Plump DJs, Evil Nine, and the Breakfastaz (name appropriate, no?). This all leads into the final track; a breakbeat remix of Megadeth's Peace Sells (But Who's Buying) from 1988. I was looking for something topical for the current times with space for live guitar, but wasn't finding any tracks that worked. The idea of remixing Megadeth has been on my mind for a while, and the similar BPM and angry lyrics (If there's a better way... I'll be the first in line... But it better work this time) meant I had to do this. The live guitar bit didn't pan out, but production time of 7 weeks from idea to master is a new record for me. Expect an official release with live guitar and club edits later in 2026. -Rumblemunk

DJing is a craft. It reveals itself over time rather than all at once, and few embody that better than OK Williams. Active since 2019, the London DJ has built a reputation through steady accumulation rather than acceleration, becoming one of the city's most trusted and widely admired selectors in the process. Williams has never been interested in narrowing her taste into a single calling card, and it's no coincidence that her roots lie at NTS Radio. She learned to DJ at the Hackney station, starting out as a volunteer producer in 2017. Musically, she moves easily between moods—sometimes cheeky, sometimes deep—and tempos, playing everything from 160 BPM jungle and amapiano to baile funk, deep house and dub techno. For her RA Mix, Williams offers up her "purist" side. Despite her background in radio, Williams doesn't share mixes often and RA.1019 arrives as a relatively rare studio document. Recorded at home on vinyl, the 90-minute session mostly leans into '90s and early '00s techno and prog house. "Ten years ago I tried learning how to play [vinyl] on a friend's 1210s and gave up after a couple of weeks,"Williams tells us below. "Those same decks were then gifted to me years later and were used to record this mix. It's quite nice to see how far I've come." In returning to vinyl, and to the decks that once marked a rocky start, Williams' RA Mix arrives as a fitting marker for the year's end. As 2026 approaches and new resolutions begin to crowd the horizon, RA.1019 serves as a welcome reminder that the best things seldom arrive in a hurry. In 2002, the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) proposed the 3-Tier fetal heart rate (FHR) classification system that was subsequently adopted by many organizations, categorizing tracings into three groups: Category I (normal), Category II (indeterminate), and Category III (abnormal). Recently, our podcast team received an interesting question form one of our podcast family members: “If there is a change in the fetal heart rate tracing intrapartum, but it is still in the normal range (like 120 going to 150)- and variability is normal, is that an abnormality? And what is meant by a ‘ZigZag' FHT pattern (different than marked variability)?”. That is a fantastically complex question…and we will explain the answer in this episode.1. Just as everyone else is winding down for the seasonal break, Lost and Sound returns after my project sabbatical with one of UK club culture's most vital voices: I. JORDAN.We trace a line from Doncaster fairgrounds and bassline bus journeys to festival stages — and to the 2024 debut album I Am Jordan, which places community, class, and queer belonging at the centre of contemporary dance music. It's a fast-moving conversation about sound, craft, and care. We talk about why tempo is a feeling rather than a rule, how working at 132–136 BPM can sharpen intent, and what happens when a seven-minute club tool becomes a three-minute vocal track that completely shifts how your body responds. We get into the granular details too: the feedback loop between club and studio, testing dubs on big systems, and the patient editing that turns a drop into a collective release on the dancefloor.Class and culture cut through everything. We discuss reclaiming the much-maligned donk on Ninja Tune as a deliberate act — honouring northern working-class roots while shaping a scene that gives trans artists agency, visibility, and joy. We also talk about why some crowds are easier to guide than others, what truly separates underground from mainstream energy, and how health, sobriety, and touring habits are central to building a sustainable life in music.I.JORDAN on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/i.jordan/?hl=enI. Step into the soundscape of Nature's Clarity, a restorative audio experience crafted to help you reset your mind and soften your nervous system in real time.In this episode, you'll hear an evening fire recorded at dusk in the Hudson Valley, right beside the Hudson River, interwoven with two powerful supportive frequencies: 40 Hz (gamma-supportive) and 417 Hz (associated with release and renewal). Composed in B minor at a gentle 78 BPM, the piece is designed to feel like a calm, honest conversation with your own inner space — grounded, warm, and quietly focused. This episode is ideal for:• Evening decompression or post-work reset• Gentle focus for journaling, reading, or creative work• Shared listening moments between caregivers and loved ones• Anyone navigating stress, mental fatigue, or cognitive overloadTo experience Nature's Clarity at its fullest:Use quality stereo headphones. This preserves the nuanced movement of the 40 Hz and 417 Hz layers and the spatial realism of the fire and river field.Choose a low-light or dusk/dusk setting. Dim lighting, warm tones, or a candle help your body mirror the track's evening atmosphere and signal a shift into a softer mode.Set a clear, simple intention. Before pressing play, decide what this session is for: mental reset, emotional release, post-work decompression, focused creativity, or shared calming time.Listen for 15–20 minutes. This window gives your nervous system time to respond to the steady frequencies, slow tempo, and natural soundscape without becoming fatigued.Breathe with the music. Let your inhalations and exhalations follow the arc of the melody or the rhythm of the fire, using the soundscape as a gentle metronome for your inner pacing.Allow a moment of silence afterward. When the track ends, stay still for a minute or two before returning to screens or tasks. Let the clarity and calm “settle” before you transition.Send us a textSupport the show

This Christmas, the soundtrack in your car could be shaping your driving more than you think. As millions take to the roads, Allianz is warning that fast-tempo music can subtly increase speed, stress and reaction times and is encouraging motorists to slow both the car and the beat. To support safer journeys this year, Allianz is urging drivers to plan ahead, take their time and never drink and drive. As part of this, Allianz Ireland has partnered with Spotify on a new data-driven initiative that helps drivers manage their mindset behind the wheel, simply by adjusting the tempo of the music they listen to. Building on this partnership, Allianz and Spotify have launched Seat Belters, an in-app experience that creates a personalised, lower-tempo playlist based on each user's listening history. Using Spotify's streaming intelligence, it identifies tracks in the 60-80 beat-per-minute (BPM) range to help promote a calmer mindset on the road - whether it's the school run, inching through town for a bit of shopping, or the long drive home across the country for Christmas. Studies show that music can have a direct influence on how we drive. Songs with a fast tempo (over 120 BPM) cansubconsciously encourage drivers to speed up and change lanes much more often. In contrast, music that matches the average resting heart rate (around 60-80 BPM) is associated with calmer, more focused driving. Behavioural Psychologist Dr. Becky Spelman offered insight into the science behind Seat Belters, and how the initiative can have real-world influence on driving behaviour: "As a psychologist, I'm always interested in the small, everyday inputs that shape how we feel and behave. Music is one of those influences that most of us overlook - we usually think of it as something enjoyable to have in the background, but the tempo and rhythm of what we listen to have a very real effect on the body. "When we're driving, these changes matter. A slight increase in heart rate or a feeling of urgency can lead to quicker reactions, more lane changes or a tendency to drive a little faster. These shifts are not usually conscious decisions; they are simply the body responding to stimulation. The research is very consistent in showing that high-tempo music makes us more reactive and more prone to quick decisions, which is not ideal when we are on the road and need calm, steady focus." A nationally representative survey commissioned by Allianz earlier this year found that over half of Irish adults believe music influences their driving style, with belief particularly strong among Gen Z, who are the demographic most likely to stream music while driving. Higher heart-rate variability, increased mental workload and erratic driving patterns have all been observed in response to faster music, making mindful playlist curation especially beneficial this Christmas. Dr. Spelman explains; "This is why the Allianz Seat Belters initiative is so useful. It takes something that people already do every day - listening to music in the car - and turns it into a practical safety support. By selecting music in the range of sixty to eighty beats per minute based on your listening history, the playlist encourages the body to settle. This slower rhythm is much closer to the natural pace of a calm and regulated nervous system. When we're in that state, our thinking becomes clearer, our decision making becomes steadier and we're less likely to behave impulsively, making the roads a safer place for everyone this Christmas." Allianz has also launched Dashboard Drumming, a social video activation pairing legendary drummer Stewart Copeland (The Police) with science content creator Big Manny. In a parked car, they use nothing but a dashboard and a drumbeat to demonstrate how changing tempo affects mindset, mood, and ultimately driving behaviour - making BPM instantly relatable and sharable. It's a fun but powerful way to show how we respond to rhythm behind the wheel. Start Your Better Driving Sou...

On our fourth episode of FIRST PEAKS, we sat down with Hard Groove / French House producer Atura (aka Eric Peschke), who takes us inside his new EP “Rebirth”. The project explores the emotional aftermath of a breakup, blending heartfelt storytelling with Atura's signature Hard Groove and French House influences as he steps into a bold new sonic identity. From a tender, letter-to-his-ex track to high-energy bangers that feel like racing through Rainbow Road, Atura breaks down each song's context and story track by track. Tune in for a vulnerable, cathartic, and unexpectedly high-BPM journey. Let us know what you think and what your favorite track from “Rebirth”!
I am really proud that this is my 200th mix release over the past 20 years or so of mixing dnb harmonically using software. Despite now being a little longer in tooth, I hope I have inspired others to give it a try and leave vinyl/decks in the 20th century (or to those that just like the smell). The technology has advanced in many ways since I started off using 2 instances of Winamp and a cross-fader plugin...not least the tools to help the DJ mix harmonically and other automations like beatmatching to free them up to focus on higher value input tasks. I expect to see AI being used to this end soon and am always looking for innovative ways to make a better sounding mix. I've been experimenting with generated cover art by crafting a prompt which includes the playlist metadata and expect it won't be long before specialist models can help suggest > mix > dynamically remix > even generate next tracks based not only on analysed key and BPM but on facets like playlist history, vocal themes, arrangement structure and phrasing. This special milestone release is a thank you to everyone that listens in to or comments on the mixes, to the clever software engineers at Native Instruments (and Google) and to the amazing *real* artists making the music that inspires it all - THANK YOU! Bob Moats and Mike Wiemuth break down how player compensation is forcing coaches and programs to think like Billy Beane, analyzing roster construction through the lens of buying wins instead of just buying players.IU's Hot Start & The Omar Cooper ParallelThe guys open celebrating IU's 4-0 start under Darian DeVries while drawing parallels between miracle plays in football and basketball. Finding ways to win isn't just about spectacular moments—it's about putting yourself in position through smart aggregation of talent and data.• Omar Cooper's impossible catch as a "games of inches" lesson• IU rising in metrics by beating predictors• Conerway's passing, Wilkerson's elite shooting on display• Penn State fans still bewildered in grocery storesThe Moneyball Framework for College BasketballMike and Bob lay out how the classic "Moneyball" approach translates to today's NIL-driven college basketball landscape, where buying wins through buying points is the new reality.• The key quote: "Your goal shouldn't be to buy players. Your goal should be to buy wins."• One-seed teams need roughly 540+ point margin over opponents for the season• Box Plus Minus (BPM) as the "on-base percentage" of basketball• IU's last 500+ point variance seasons: 2013, 1993, 1992, 1990Finding Undervalued TalentThe hosts identify the statistical thresholds and player types that offer the best return on investment in the portal and recruiting landscape.• Players with 5.0+ BPM at mid-majors show "stickiness" when jumping to Power Five• Elite one-seed starters average 8.7 BPM (roughly Yogi Ferrell level or better)• 85% of one-seed starters have 6.0+ BPM• The "Lance Jones bump" - finding best player on mediocre team who can elevate• Target the Mountain West, A-10, and top mid-majors for 5+ BPM playersThe Money Problem: Who's Overpaying?Bob and Mike examine which programs are spending wisely versus which are trapped by their own wealth, using real scenarios to show how compensation complicates roster building.• Example: $3M five-star with 3.0 BPM vs. $1.7M A-10 POY with 6.8 BPM• The "hammer looking for nails" problem when you have too much money• Ohio State's Anthony Thompson situation: Overspend or necessary premium?• Why 50% of one-seed starters now come from the portal• BYU reportedly paying AJ Dybantsa $5-7M - only 3-5 schools can competeThe New Three-Dimensional RealityThe compensation era adds a third dimension to roster construction that constrains even wealthy programs and creates new strategic challenges.• Pre-NIL: Two-dimensional (program fit + player development)• Post-NIL: Three-dimensional (add budget constraints)• Top NIL programs creating their own pressure traps• Market correction concerns: "Is that guy still worth $7M after a 25% correction?"• Underground economy going public usually lowers prices—this did the oppositeComing up: A rivalry show with Everything College Basketball's Josh and Peyton Burton (UK and UL fans), plus an extended film room session with Tony Adragna and Brian Tonsoni breaking down DeVries' system. This episode brought to you by the Back Home Network and Homefield Apparel.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

On Healthy Mind, Healthy Life, host Sana talks with veteran film/TV composer Chris Boardman, founder of SoundBridge Health. After developing PTSD, Chris turned decades of musical storytelling into a practical nervous-system toolkit that blends personally meaningful music, breathwork, and ritual movement. We unpack the neuroscience—hippocampus memory recall, amygdala signaling, dopamine release—and why tempo, not genre, is the lever for calm or focus. We also cover how to build on-the-spot “pre-shot routines” to interrupt spirals and why music from ages 12–20 often regulates us fastest. Direct, science-backed, and immediately usable. About the Guest : Chris Boardman is a renowned composer/arranger/orchestrator whose career spans symphony, Broadway, film, and records, collaborating with icons such as Quincy Jones, Julie Andrews, and Shirley MacLaine. He is the creator of SoundBridge Health, a pre-launch program that teaches people to self-regulate using music, breath, and movement. Key Takeaways: Music is embedded in long-term memory (hippocampus); hearing a familiar piece rapidly retrieves associated memories and feelings. Positive recall can trigger dopamine via amygdala → frontal cortex signaling, creating a fast mood lift and physiological shift. The brain's autonomic threat response (startle, hypervigilance) can be interrupted by focused listening paired with breath and movement. Tempo entrains physiology: choose slower BPM to downshift anxiety; faster BPM to energize. Genre doesn't matter—personal relevance does. Music from ages 12–20 often regulates best due to heightened emotional imprinting during coming-of-age changes. Pair music with box breathing/pranayama to anchor attention in the present and with ritual movement to quiet rumination. Build a simple on-demand routine: select 3–5 personally meaningful tracks by target tempo, add a fixed breath cadence, and repeat the same micro-movement sequence to train the response. SoundBridge Health is pre-launch and preparing pilot programs with physicians; interested listeners can join the waitlist to be notified. Pop can sparkle and still say something. That's the throughline as we sit down with recording artist Kayn Falcon, who blends Connecticut calm with New York urgency to craft synthwave-leaning pop that moves the body and nudges the mind. Kayn opens up about producing his songs from the beat up, guarding his creative sessions like sacred space, and trusting a small team of specialists to elevate his mixes and masters without diluting his vision. If you've ever wondered how minimal rooms and maximal ideas can coexist, this is a masterclass in focus. We dig into the art of writing upbeat tracks with hidden depth—why tempos over 100 BPM don't have to mean shallow, how “Automatic” disguises social commentary inside a danceable hook, and what it takes to balance immediacy with meaning. Kayn also shares how a long-lost freshman-year hard drive reshaped his path, proving that early instincts can carry surprising power years later. Along the way, he talks image and branding, why he embraces a bright falsetto that once drew criticism, and how owning what makes you different can become your defining edge.Looking ahead, Kayn sketches a bold live vision: dancers, story-driven staging, and projector visuals to keep the narrative front and center without breaking the budget. Offstage, he's navigating algorithms with playful “confessionals,” building real community one post at a time, and turning work ethic into momentum through multiple jobs and relentless craft. If you're curious about synthpop, DIY production, artist branding, and the grind behind meaningful music, you'll feel right at home here.Loved this conversation?
