In this episode, Mindie sits down with Grammy Award-winning producer, composer, and author Barry Goldstein for a rich conversation about music as a tool for healing, heart coherence, creative flow, and energetic management. Barry shares his unlikely journey (from house music and hip hop in the Bronx, to winning a Grammy with Les Paul, to pioneering the use of music and sound as medicine) and offers deeply practical wisdom for entrepreneurs looking to protect their energy and bring their biggest visions into the world.Episode HighlightsFrom the Bronx to the Grammy stage — Barry grew up with a love of music planted by his mother at the piano, learned guitar in the '70s (sporting what he calls "the Jaffer," a Jewish Afro), and eventually won a Grammy for Best Rock Instrumental working alongside Les Paul, the inventor of the electric guitar.Burnout led to breakthrough — After achieving success in club music and hip hop production, Barry hit a wall. Determined to reconnect with the joy of music, he set his metronome to 60 BPM and began composing long, unstructured soundscapes, unknowingly pioneering what we now understand as heart coherence music. The science of sound and heart coherence — Barry breaks down how music at 60 BPM can synchronize your heart rate, slow your breathing, and produce smooth, orderly heart rhythms (the very definition of heart coherence) while simultaneously shifting the brain into alpha and theta waves associated with creativity and flow state.Music as energetic management — Barry reframes music not just as art or medicine, but as a tool for scheduling and protecting your energy throughout the day. He lays out a simple "three meals a day" approach: an activating song in the morning, a mid-day reset during your energy dip, and 60 BPM music in the evening to wind down and unlock insight before sleep.Creativity belongs to everyone — Barry makes the case that creativity isn't reserved for artists. Every interaction, every moment of connection, ripples outward in ways we can't always see. He encourages listeners to carve out even five minutes a day for their vision and watch momentum build.Embrace the edge — Barry's closing message to entrepreneurs on the precipice of something new: the edge is exactly where you want to be. Whether it leads to a fall or to soaring, the gift is in being there at all, alive to possibility and in motion on your HeartPath.
In this episode, I'm catching you up on my week. The weather has been beautiful the past few days, and you already know how everyone starts acting differently the moment the sun comes out. When winter breaks for a second, suddenly everybody is outside, in a good mood, and living their best life.I also talk about getting my PrEP shot this week and why taking care of your health is so important. We've come a long way when it comes to HIV prevention, and being responsible about your health is something I take seriously. Then I get into a conversation about Nicki Minaj and the LGBTQ community. As a fan, I share my honest thoughts about Nicki's cultural impact, why so many queer fans connected with her music and persona, and why the conversation around her today is a little more complicated than it is online. And yes… I explain why I'm still a Barb.—Don't forget to subscribe, like, and give me my 10s in the comments!X: @LNwithSylvesterEmail: LateNightwithSylvester@gmail.com

What does it take to turn a quiet gym into a memory people carry for years? We sit with Paco Loco—Philly-born, Hawaii-made—who built a career at the crossroads of sports, comedy, and DJ culture. From ushering the wildest sections at Lincoln Financial Field and riding with Eagles legends to announcing Kobe Bryant's final summer-league game before the draft, Paco shows how a single voice can set the tone for an entire room.We dive into his playbook: how to pronounce every name with respect, when to fire the arena cannon and when to switch to “library mode,” and why music programming by BPM (not genre) keeps crowds moving without crossing lines. He breaks down the reality of clean edits, the power of communal dance tracks, and the surprising songs that still explode with Gen Z. Then we explore stages you might not expect—STEM robotics finals, esports showdowns, and Special Olympics nights—where the same energy, timing, and care make people feel seen.Comedy sharpened everything. Paco dissects writing premises, stacking examples, reading sensitive rooms, and coaching young comics to use voices and detail to make stories land. Along the way, we trade Philly lore, from the Allen Iverson “practice” moment to early Kevin Hart crowd work. The thread is consistent: excellence without an audience cap. Show up like the building is full, because someone who matters might be watching. If you love sports culture, live events, and the craft behind a truly great in-game experience, this one's for you. You'll leave with practical ideas for crowd energy, music curation, and on-mic presence—and a renewed belief that the right word at the right moment can change a night. In MobileViews Podcast episode 599, panelists Jon Westfall and I (Todd Ogasawara) are joined by frequent guest panelist Sven Johannsen. We start off with thoughts on the new Google Nano Banana 2 (Gemini 3.1 Flash Image), with Todd noting its impressive capabilities. I also shared a recent AI experiment where he fed his 100-song Apple Music Replay All Time list to Google Gemini Pro to generate a playlist for a brisk two-mile walk. The AI successfully curated a 12-song list in the 114-124 BPM range, remarkably close to my average heart rate during a brisk walk, pulling in tracks by his favorite artists that weren't even on the original list. Next, we discussed Apple's upcoming multi-day March product announcement event. I noted my amusement over tech pundits already debating the performance merits (or lack thereof) of the rumored A18 Pro budget MacBook. Sven brings some smart home tech to the table, discussing the Matter-enabled EVE Motion sensor and the frustrations involved in setting it up outside of the native EVE or Apple Home ecosystems. They also touch on the DJI Neo 2 drone, highlighting that a smartphone is required for initial setup and reminding listeners about the necessary FAA TRUST Certificate for recreational flyers. Finally, we took a nostalgic turn, pondering what we lost when media went digital. Jon discusses his recent eBay purchases of old, inexpensive CD box sets—not just to rip hard-to-find tracks, but to reclaim the physical artwork and ephemera that used to accompany music. This leads to a broader reflection on physical media, including coffee table books, and Todd's perspective on the tangible value of ownership as a comic book collector.
There are 20 sports at this year's Arctic Winter Games in Whitehorse. Pin trading has long been considered an unofficial sport at the AWG, so that makes 21.... And now, podcast producer Mark Koepke suggests a 22nd "sport." As he documents the final sprint in a multi-year, volunteer-led marathon to plan the circumpolar world's biggest sporting and cultural event, Mark takes a cue from his favourite event—Arctic Sports—and talks a fine line between cooperation and competition.CREDITSProduced by Mark KoepkeIntro/outro music by Major FunkWEIO audio courtesy of Ross KingMusic:Funk Meister by TheoJT -- License: Attribution 4.0Beautiful Minimalist Piano by TheoJT -- License: Attribution 4.0Cute Background Loop Song Thing by Seth_Makes_Sounds -- License: Creative Commons 0Tom-Based Rock, 135 BPM by carloseton -- License: Creative Commons 0Peaceful Simple Piano by TheoJT -- License: Attribution 4.0Slay the Dragon by code_box -- License: Creative Commons 0Rogue Strings Rag by code_box -- License: Creative Commons 0bel fiore by Seth_Makes_Sounds -- License: Creative Commons 0Half Time Show by code_box -- License: Creative Commons 0Large crowd applause.wav by Bansemer -- License: Creative Commons 0YOU MAY ALSO ENJOYThe Sourdough MocktailHe's a real batassThese old housesHard rock minorsCONNECT WITH USWebsite: theyukonmagazine.comInstagram: @the.yukon.magazineFacebook: @TheYukonMagazineLinkedIn: @theyukonmagazineEmail: podcast@theyukonmagazine.comSUBSCRIBE TO THE MAGAZINESubscribe for yourself or as a gift for that special person who needs a little more Yukon in their life. This playlist is 63% vinyl friendly. Very poor. The Vertere DG-1 Dynamic Groove. One commentator queried whether ‘the design wandered in the direction of form over function‘, but this, the company’s entry level version, was voted in What Hi-Fi‘s updated 2025 ‘20 very best turntables of (the magazine’s) lifetime‘… but it had detractors elsewhere. My first thought was ‘sandwich’ and lo and behold the review mentions the plinth’s ‘three layers of acrylic reinforced with a steel chassis to give a rigid yet well-damped structure‘ with that middle layer, from a distance, reminding me of some marbled cheese. Near £2k for one standard version spotted on eBay and £3550 for a DG-1S updated model, with a bullet pointed spec to match. When you get up to these prices (and way, way beyond) manufacturers are duty bound to work overtime to justify their prices. NB: Apologies. A bit of a glitch in recording my parts for this show but they just about do the job. Any track marked * has been given either a tiny or a slightly larger 41 Rooms tweak/edit/chop and the occasional tune might sound a bit dodgy, quality-wise. On top of that, the switch between different decades and production values never helps in the mix here. Lyric of Playlist 149 On another day and in another frame of mind it could have gone to Baby Rose but much aided by a gorgeous key change backdrop, the gold star sticker goes to Banderas! It’s hard to tell though if their ‘There is no rehearsal. No second chance. No false start. No better circumstances… ‘ words of wisdom would change much with the type of peeps in their video. 00.00 (Intro) THE FLAMINGOS – Stars (Edit) – Unreleased demo – 1983. Episode #1 for info. 00.41 NEW ORDER – Doubts Even Here (Instrumental) (Cargo Demo) (2019 Remaster) – Movement, Definitive Edition Boxset – Warner Music – 2023 Doubts Even Hear? I should coco, and if you want ‘tentative’ in your music then this has it in shed loads. My guess is this maybe wasn’t Hooky’s first stab at the track in the band’s rehearsal room but you can nearly hear him finding his way into and over the ARP Quadra’s strings. 05.15 COCTEAU TWINS – Road River and Rail (Live) – Stream only – 2026 Live in 1991 but only very recently uploaded to the net, a mixing desk recording from The Warfield, in San Francisco and a rare treat to hear Liz this clear in a gig setting. At your leisure, search out the rest of the gig. There’s no visual from the above show, so here’s a barely rescued – but previously unseen/unpublished – photo of mine. Liz and Simon soundchecking at Newcastle’s Tiffany’s, 19.4.84. Photo credit / copyright: Dec Hickey 08.37 JOHN CALE – Thoughtless Kind (M:FANS) – M:FANS, 2LP – Double Six – 2016 A pedestrian, sledgehammer beat and a more forceful take on the lyrics than found in the ex-Velvet Underground man’s original. To my ears, they’re better suited here. 13.59 EMERSON, LAKE & PALMER – Take A Pebble * – Emerson, Lake & Palmer, LP – Island – 1970 I bought this album maybe four or five years after release and without doubt after having heard maybe just one of the three tracks on it I had taken to. I wouldn’t have been listening to any radio that might have played this album, so I’m guessing I borrowed it from a mate – very likely Phil Harris or Tom Locke (RIP). Greg Lake’s vocals were the thing for me back then and on my National Panasonic SG-1070L I’d have skipped Keith Emerson’s often lengthy rock-orchestral leaning keyboard workouts from all three… and likewise it’s a massive edit on the show for Take A Pebble. 17.33 BABY ROSE – Stop The Bleeding – Through And Through, LP – Secretly Canadian – 2023 If I thought the vibrato in Baby Rose’s vocal on the last 41 Rooms’ show entry (‘Go’) reminded me of Anonhi/Antony and the Johnsons then this does so with knobs on… as it maybe sounds even more of a song and arrangement the latter could have penned. 21.17 A RACE OF ANGELS – Golden – Broadcast No. 1, CD only – Luv Classics – 2005 It’s not often a CD gets a visual look in on 41 Rooms but the majority of Broadcast No. 1’s tracks have been or are on course for inclusion… and there was no vinyl. A 21st century left field folk soul beaut. Saluting Yeofi Andoh once again. 23.56 KRAFTWERK – Boing Boom Tschak * – Electric Cafe, LP – Kling Klang / EMI – 1986 The German maestros with some playful mid ’80s electro. Who else could it be? 27.01 BESIDE (with BERNARD FOWLER) – Odeon (Dance Mix) – 12″ – Celluloid – 1984 In 1984 the only place I’d have heard this was on John Peel’s radio shows – and he was partial to some electro. With the other side playlisted on 41 Rooms years ago, that would make this Afrika Bambaataa-produced 12″ a bargain to me these days, at less than the price of a pint on Discogs. Back in 1984, ordering it on import from Bedford’s HMV (as I did) its £5.29 price tag would seemingly have between five and ten pints plus worth! 32.37 MIDNIGHT STAR – Midas Touch (Vocal Extended Remix) – 12″ – Solar – 1986 With Electro roots, some breezy mid ’80s glitzy dance which has aged far better than – ‘Look away now’ (or don’t look at all) – the clothes and hair in the video. 38.42 ROZALLA – Born To Luv Ya – 12″ – Pulse-8 – 1990 At some point, when I do get to wade through the Record Mirror‘s I have from the the late ’80s/early ’90s I’d put a quiet fiver on the late James Hamilton having used ‘bubbling’ in a review of this particular mix of the tune. Par for the course lyrics but given some decent beats Rozalla has a voice that more than matches. 43.00 THOMAS LEER – Forgive and Forget – 1982, CD only – Klanggalerie – 2015 When I first happened on the 1982 CD recordings I thought Leer had re-found his youthful energy in the ‘now’. It’s in the title, Dec… so, a ‘series of tracks for unreleased album circa 1982‘ states the man himself. That would put them around the time of his Letter From America and Contradictions EPs but way before the ‘pop’ album, The Scale Of Ten. Forgive and Forget is though definitely a dry run for that album’s belter, Control Yourself. 47.23 MINT ROYALE – I Don’t Care – See You In The Morning, CD only – Faith & Hope Records Limited – 2005 Aagghh, it’s another CD… but needs must, as no vinyl surfaced and by this point Neil Claxton was flying solo as Mint Royale. 51.48 OSCAR FARRELL (feat SAMPHA) – Dream Therapy (George FitzGerald remix) – Download only – ? – 2026 The So Far South EP original rightly has many admirers but I’m more with this moodier take. Screenshot 55.22 NOSTALGIX – Mess With Me – Download only – Confession – 2019 Out of Vancouver, British Columbia, she seems through the years to have occasionally just digitally floated singular tracks out there. 58.32 SUICIDE – Ghost Rider – Self-titled, LP – Red Star Records – 1977 There’d be a bunch of my early ’80s mates who’d have gone for the album but it’s only this track that grabbed me. 01.01.01 CABARET VOLTAIRE – Nag Nag Nag (Live 2025 Single Edit) – Download only (for now) – Mute – 2026 ‘Updating’ and then capturing – just ‘right’ – this classic track’s first live outing in forty five or so years could have gone wrong but all involved nailed it, and seeing as I caught four of the Cabs’ six gigs last year there’s a good chance I was in on this actual recording. In fact, given the advances in sound technology Nag is likely sounding better in the room than it would have done live back in 1979-82… something I never witnessed. 01.05.10 THE SOUND – Heartland (Mike Read session, 1980) – The BBC Recordings – 2CD only – Renascent – 2004 If Adrian Borland and crew were pushing for a radio session in their early throws (who wasn’t) I’d have thought John Peel would have got in there first. The band did subsequently do a Peel session but here Mike Read edged it and the band were firing. 01.08.19 JOY DIVISION – Warsaw – An Ideal For Living, 7″ EP – Enigma – 1978 I never owned this original 7″ but somewhere around 1980-81 and through the back pages of the inkie press I bought the subsequent 12″ from an ‘MJ’ in Crewe who reckoned in an enclosed note he’d leant Steve Morris £60 to pay for the sleeves. When I sold the single years later I thought I’d kept the note… but if I did, it then went AWOL. 01.10.40 TURNSTILE – Dreaming – Never Enough, LP – Roadrunner – 2025 They’ve eased up here on their early hardcore leanings which might go some way to why this tune gets a thumbs up from me and those who take occasionally take a punt on an album because of the sleeve could still be in for a shock. 01.13.00 TV21 – Ideal Way Of Life – A Thin Red Line, LP – Deram – 1981 Other tracks on the album have already graced 41 Rooms as indeed they did back in Winkles in 1981-82. 01.15.27 THE TEARDROP EXPLODES – Went Crazy – Kilimanjaro, LP – Mercury – 1980 Julian in 1980. Sounding ‘quirky pop’ in 2026? 01.18.03 NATURAL SCIENTIST – See Through You – 7″ – Dental Records – 1982 Even though I bought their Terminal Velocity debut 12″ at the time, this their follow up somehow by-passed me for four decades 01.22.07 IRMA THOMAS – My Heart’s In Memphis – My Heart’s In Memphis – The Songs Of Dan Penn, CD only – Rounder Records – 2000 Criminally, only seven thousand plus peeps have ever viewed the fan video online of Irma on an outside stage, live in New Orleans from 2003 and I nearly went with its muffled sound here, as the more she gets in to the song the more she really lives it. 01.25.53 STEVIE WONDER – (I) Don’t Know Why (I Love You) – 7″ – Tamla Motown – 1968-9 For the UK release Motown couldn’t quite make up there mind on the title – but this stark outpouring and arrangement is still a killer, even though it was maybe trumped for radio play by the lusher, romantic appeal of the b-side, My Cherie Amour. 01.28.25 MT JONES – I Don’t Understand – Joy, LP – ? – 2026 New(ish) blue-eyed retro soul with as much effort on the visual. A fab single but I’ve got a feeling an album of his accentuated vocal might be too much for me. We’ll see. 01.31.49 WILLIE HUTCH – Hurt So Bad – Season For Love, LP – RCA – 1970 Before his switch to maybe his more spiritual Brother’s Gonna Work It Out home of Motown. 01.34.39 BANDERAS – This Is Your Life (PanoΣigma Edit) – Stream only – ? – 2019 Just the one album, squarely aimed at the mainstream, and some cerebral tunes from these two shaven-headed girls. I’m not sure how much the decent lyrics and sumptuous key change helped but this was their biggest UK hit. Even in the sometimes throwaway nature of ‘pop’ charts, quality will out. 01.39.36 DIANA BROWN & BARRIE K SHARPE – Eating Me Alive * – 12″ – FFRR – 1992 ‘Weaving together many different dance music sounds of the late sixties/early seventies, including such as vintage Jackson 5 and Norman Whitfield era Temptations, Timmy Thomas beats and Chicago Transit Authority guitar chords (“I’m a man, yes I am, and I love you so”), this brilliant intensely driving jiggly chugger has been promoed as a twinpack with 0-104.7-0bpm Undisputed Mix Part 1 & Part II, 0-104.7bpm Original Groundbeat, 0-105.25-0bpm Funky Funky Sugar Heavy Groundbeat Mix, 0-105.4bpm One Trip Too Many Mix, more recently influenced grooving 115.8-0bpm Groundbeat House Ensemble/Instrumental, hi-hat hustled 118.7bpm Undercover Dub Mix 1 and 118.6bpm Undercover Dub Mix 2, Dianamite!‘ – James Hamilton, Record Mirror (Music Week), 20.6.92 Any time I re-edit etc I really should remember the source of the original… and there’s a heavy 41 Rooms re-edit going on here. Whatever. James Hamilton’s ‘vintage Jackson 5’ reference is spot on and the bridges and chorus are so strong they make the verses sound absolutely tepid. He dropped in for a visit at May’s house and sat down to play a piano ballad he had been working on called, “Lightning Strikes Twice”. This piece went into May’s sequencer and was kept there until May decided to listen to it all the way through. He found some portions which interested him, and he started to work with it. The song was originally at 80 BPM before May increased the tempo, chopped it up into loops, and added percussion and string samples’. Wikipedia The history of this stark track is interesting. I called this ‘near punk like, house / techno’ on the show, what with its crude/rough arrangement feeling like it nearly takes four minutes to settle… just in time for it to sound like it’s breaking down on the outro! And it’s become a classic! Enough to warrant a bunch of remixes and the mighty ‘live with orchestra’ version that follows. 01.52.18 RHYTHIM IS RHYTHIM – Strings Of Life (Live, Weather Festival, Paris, France) – Stream only – 2015 Derrick May, with Francesco Tristano (ex-Aufgang) loving it big time on extra keyboards, with the weight of the full Philharmonic Orchestra Lamoureux, under the direction of Dzijan Emin… and all beautifully captured by ‘producer, Amos Rozenberg and Paramax Films in 4K with 9 Cinema cameras by Samuel Petit for Arte TV‘… it says somewhere. We fed a real two-hour cover band set list into ChatGPT… and it absolutely roasted it.Mike from @PorkTornadoes and @ConfusedBreakfast has been building this show for 15 years. We dumped the full thing — tempos, singers, closers, all of it — into a GPT thread trained on a year of our cover band philosophy. The verdict?“It's a playlist, not a show.”“You're programming like a musician, not a psychologist.”“Protect the dance floor at all costs.”And honestly… it wasn't wrong. This episode is for anyone who writes set lists, plays in multi-singer bands, or cares about how energy actually moves through a room. We get into emotional arcs, genre clustering, why fairness can kill momentum, and how to actually use AI as a creative tool instead of a gimmick.---### What we get into:* The closer debate: **Mr. Brightside** vs. **Lose Yourself*** Why “slow songs need runway”* BPM brick walls and mid-set energy crashes* Country clustering vs. demographic pinball* Engineering the perfect photo-op peak* The nuclear run and where your biggest weapons actually belong* Fairness vs. emotional inevitability in multi-singer bands* Using AI as a rut-buster (not a replacement for taste)There's also a brief mid-episode emergency when Adam's kid takes a headshot at recess. He's fine. Scalp wounds just bleed like Tarantino directed them.If you build set lists for a living — or even just obsess over them — this one might mess with your philosophy a little.Protect the dance floor.Sweetwater Affilate Link: https://sweetwater.sjv.io/xJE4rk BACTrack Affiliate Link: https://www.bactrack.com/coverbandconfidential MaestroDMX (10% off discount link): https://maestrodmx.com/discount/DISCOUNT4CBC?redirect=%2Fproducts%2FmaestrodmxBlank Contracts & Riders: https://www.coverbandconfidential.com/store/performance-contractsBacking Track Resources: https://www.coverbandconfidential.com/store/backing-track-resourcesThank you so much for tuning in! Silenced Soil begins with a fragile artefact: a recording of Claude Debussy's Sarabande, composed in 1894 and revised in 1901, then recorded on 11 April 1963 in Gillitts, KwaZulu-Natal, by ethnomusicologist Raymond Clausen. Its only documentation is a handwritten note on a reel-to-reel tape box: “at Gillitt's, copy of Debussy, Sarabande.” No pianist, no studio, no context. The archive offers little clarity. Sometimes it keeps its silence.Listening to this recording in 2025, I was confronted not only by sound, but by history. Why was Western art music recorded here, under whose authority, and for what purpose, during a period still shaped by colonial power? Before reshaping the music, I had to confront my own position as a descendant of European colonisers. This inherited legacy uncomfortable but necessary became central to the work, sharpening my awareness of cultural imposition, culture colonialism and ongoing calls for restitution. From this reckoning, Silenced Soil emerged. I treated Debussy's melody as a fractured map: splintered, dispersed, and reassembled through chance. This approach draws on John Cage's embrace of indeterminacy and my long-standing admiration for atonality in music. The soundscape is composed at 120 BPM (2 Hz), chosen to evoke both calm and alertness. A reflection of historical time moving slowly, yet demanding urgent re-examination. Within this framework, I wove voices and instruments from Zulu culture, women's singing sound fragments, mouth harps, clapping sticks, and rattles — alongside electronics, loops, found sounds, urban noise, and synthesised textures and the original recording of Sarabande. I actively intervened in this source material, editing the refrain of Sarabande into fragmentary notes and embedding them within the soundscape composition. These elements meet not as opposites but as interlocutors, forming a threshold where suppressed traditions and contemporary sound worlds converge.Unanswered questions remain: Who was the pianist? Who authorised the recording? What ethical framework governed it? These absences are integral to Silenced Soil. What is unheard can be as powerful as what is recorded. And the soil? It stands for the restless cosmos, for the sand forever in motion across our planet. What drifts, what scatters, what is buried will, in time, be made visible. My compositional process is guided by intuition and curiosity; notation and atonality serve as a compass rather than a rule, supported here by research into the subject itself. My aural journey began at six at the piano, expanded through Germany's 1990s DJ culture, deepened during my years as a contracted composer with BMG, and refined through studies in Sound & Visual Art at Middlesex University's Lansdowne Centre for Electronic Arts. Together, these experiences shape a practice that moves fluidly between structure and instinct, inquiry and an enduring love for soundscape creation.Piano being played reimagined by Linda Himbert.———Part of the project A Century of Sounds, reimagining 100 sounds covering 100 years from the collections of the Pitt Rivers Museum at the University of Oxford. In episode 133, Sudan Archives's Brittney Parks shares the story of her creative evolution, beginning with falling in love with violin when she was in fourth grade (thanks to a school visit by Canadian fiddle group Barrage), how playing in church led to learning songs from the MTV countdown to impress her friends, and eventually learning how to make beats and record her own songs using her iPad. She also talks about the influence of artists including Ibeyi, Santigold, Lykke Li and Corinne Bailey Rae, and how she began releasing her music (under the moniker Sudan Moon) more than a decade ago. And of course we also delve into the making of her excellent latest album, The BPM, and how "driveway beef" with her LA neighbors led her to finish the project with family in Detroit, where the city's rich history of pioneering dance music helped coalesce some of her sonic ideas for the LP. Send Steve a Text MessageWant real progress instead of the same comfortable loops? We break down the simple shift that turns practice from maintenance to elevation, so your time actually maps to your goals. It's not about grinding more minutes; it's about choosing what to grow and building a plan that sticks. We dig into the core idea of intentional practice—defining the exact skill you're training, measuring something tangible like BPM or clean reps, and applying constraints that force better form. You'll hear why random YouTube rabbit holes stall progress, how to decide what to ignore, and the questions that filter out noise: does this solve a bottleneck, can I apply it this week, and does it fit the music I want to make? From timing and fretboard mapping to chord fluency and ear training, we show how to pick the two or three sub-skills that unlock your next level. Then we stack those choices into a lean, realistic routine. We outline short, focused blocks for technique, musical application, and theory that fit inside 30 to 60 minutes, plus a weekly review loop using recordings for honest feedback. We also talk about the power of coaching—surfacing blind spots, confirming form, and sequencing your path—so you stop guessing and start integrating. The goal is clarity, not complexity: fewer inputs, better reps, and consistent wins that compound. If you're ready to stop circling and start climbing, this one gives you the framework to make every session count. M7 JESU, JOY OF MAN'S DESIRING, JS BACH, 1723, BWV 147 (2:56) M8 CHORALE PRELUDE “WACHET AUF”, JS BACH, 1731, BWV 140 (3:37) PROGRAM NOTES Johann Sebastian Bach was a German composer and organist from the late Baroque period. He was born in Eisenach, in what is now central Germany. Bach lived from 1685 to 1750, The Baroque period was a 150-year period in music, dating from 1600 to 1750. Baroque music is Western Classical Music that followed the Renaissance period. Baroque music features drama, ornamentation, major and minor tones, and was presented in new ways – – like the Opera, Concerto, and Sonata, Baroque composers included BACH, HANDEL, VIVALDI. M9 AIR ON A G-STRING, JS BACH, 1730, BWV 1068 (2:27). Bach probably used the CLAVICHORD to compose most of his music. The Clavichord is small, lightweight and would not disturb people. The clavichord was very temperamental, because it required tuning before each play, just like a violin or guitar. The keyboard instruments of the day were referred to as a general category: the “KLAVIER”….these included HARPSICHORD, CLAVICHORD, ORGAN and PIANOFORTE. Bach's favorite KLAVIER instrument was the LAUTENWERK or LUTE HARPSICHORD with animal gut strings. The writing of music was in support of GOD and KINGS. Over time, Baroque Music evolved into what is today known as the modern Orchestra. Bach was a prolific composer, writing hundreds of pieces for solo instruments, particularly the organ. He also wrote pieces for orchestra and choir. Bach is MOST known for writing two or more melodies or voices against each other. Also called point against point, or, Counterpoint. Bit Bucket A BWV catalog number is a unique identifier for musical works composed by Johann Sebastian Bach, standing for Bach-Werke-Verzeichnis (Bach Works Catalogue). Today I will present 9 compositions, dating from 1710 to 1731, during the time Bach was about age 25 to 45. M1 TOCCATA & FUGUE in C MAJOR M.2 ADAGIO, 1710-1717, BWV 564 (4:20) Our first piece — TOCATA & FUGUE in C MAJOR , the 2nd movement (ADAGIO). an ORGAN COMPOSITION. It is taken from a 1959 album of BACH ORGAN WORKS . The movement is called ADAGIO ….which indicates “At Ease”, or “Slow and Stately”. Tempo is only 66-76 BPM. like the resting heart rate for many people. Great liner notes. HERE IS AN excerpt from the liner notes on that album – – QUOTE “OUR BACH” said the obituary notice, “was the greatest organ and clavier player that ever lived”. Though it may seem strange to us now, Bach's genius during his life was recognized only as a master of the organ—not as a composer. It was actually over a hundred years after his death that his works revealed him as a unique and mighty composer. His reputation as an organist brought many invitations to test new organs and advise on the construction of them. UNQUOTE As with most of his organ works , there is no autograph or manuscript score from Bach, his organ work manuscript copies are lost. This song has a CONCERTO style and rhythm. We will hear the 2nd or ADAGIO movement. . It is all very calm and beautiful and pastoral and serene…until Bach pulls out all the stops in the last minute of this ADAGIO movement. He is really rocking the walls and windows of that church. Without any further adieu, here is TOCATA & FUGUE in C MAJOR , the 2nd movement (ADAGIO). PLAY M2 SHOW PLUG – DON'T TOUCH THAT DIAL ! This LP was produced and released on the SOMERSET label here in the US in 1959 The album title is BACH The Majesty of the Luneburger Organ. M2 NUN KOMM DER HEIDEN HEILAND, JS BACH, 1714, BWV 61 (5:21) Our next piece is the most famous church cantata written in 1714 for THE FIRST SUNDAY IN ADVENT. NUN KOMM DER HEIDEN HEILAND or in English “NOW COME, SAVIOR OF THE HEATHANS” A HEATHAN is a person with no religion, i.e., a PAGAN. In this chorale, Jesus is asked to … come and save the pagans. In 1714, Bach would have been 29 years of age. It turns out that this song goes back almost two centuries before BACH's time. It's based on a LUTERAN CHORALE with words written by Martin Luther for the 1523 first Advent Sunday. For centuries, this was the first hymn for the first Sunday of ADVENT. What I will play next is an arrangement for as modern symphony orchestra (the Philadelphia Orchestra) and it is definitely JS BACH heard in those phrases. But it is a large orchestra – – Conducted by Leopold Stokowski. This is an extremely restrained, demure, and understated interpretation of a Bach piece the most restrained I have ever heard. The recording you will hear next is performed by the Philadelphia Orchestra, with conductor Leopold Stokowski. This recording is on a Vinyl LP titled THE SOUND OF GENIUS, produced by COLUMBIA MASTERWORKS, in 1960. It was one of many records that were shipped by mail to members of the Columbia Record Club. My parents were enthusiastic members. A new disc would arrive in the mail every month, such as this LP of classical music. ZAHN 1174 M3 TWO-PART INVENTION in F MAJOR, JS BACH, 1720-1723 (0:40) The next three pieces are called TWO PART INVENTIONS, composed by JS Bach around 1720 The inventions were composed for use in instruction of Bach's oldest son WILHELM FRIEDEMANN BACH who was 12 years old. Today, these inventions are introduced to music students in school grades 4-7. Learning the Two-Part Invention requires ROTE learning, practicing over and over until the two hands work completely independently of one another. The inventions teach, among other things, the use of COUNTERPOINT. Bach is MOST known for writing two melodies against each other. Also called point against point, or, Counterpoint. That is the feature of these inventions, in each one there are TWO PARTS, left and right hand parts. COUNTERPOINT is found mostly in Bach's FUGUES and in his INVENTIONS. Perhaps a brief demonstration is in order. Here is an excerpt from one of Bach's inventions. FIRST the right-hand part or first point – the melody SECOND the left-hand part or second point – the bass line LAST both parts played in counterpoint. In some of Bach works, the roles reverse, The left hand plays the first point – the melody And the right hand plays the second point – the bass line Could you do this by crossing hands on the keyboard – yes, but, the roles are reversed, so no cross-hand playing. I will now play WENDY CARLOS's rendition of three BACH TWO-PART INVENTIONS from her 1969 recording titled “SWITCHED ON BACH” .. I will play all three, back-to-back. Each one is short – – average length ONE MINUTE EACH! Not just a key change like the work title would suggest ! Bach stated that he wrote his inventions “to be models of composition” in other words, to enable the student to form ways of developing musical ideas and “acquire a strong taste of composition” Bach wrote the inventions, one for of the notes A to G and one for each minor and major key. He was 37. The title page to the Well-tempered Clavier song book reads : “The well-tempered Clavier, or Preludes and Fugues, through all the tones and semitones, both the [major] and [minor]. For the profit and use of the studious musical young…” Bach wrote these preludes and fugues in all keys in the chromatic scale … 12 major and 12 minor keys I have the version in D MAJOR. This was written for the Christian Feast of the Visitation- celebrated at the end of May in Western Christianity. The song is a Lutheran hymn. … a CANTATA and it has a CHORALE or chorus piece repeated twice within this cantata. There are many arrangements and versions because this song is one of Bach's most beautiful, well-known, and popular. This hymn was transcribed from a Lutheran hymn written in 1599 by written by Phillippe Nicolai. This Cantata is truly a work from the middle ages. In 1731, Bach took this hymn and created a 7-movement cantata, we will hear the first movement or PRELUDE”. This cantata is sung in church on the Trinity Sunday. Today this piece is very popular piece in general…it is POPULAR CLASSICAL MUSIC. J.S. Bach wrote 46 of these cantatas for church, in all. This title comes from Johann Sebastian Bach's Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D major, written almost 300 years ago. So what is the meaning of the song title Air on a G-String? Well, Bach composed this as an orchestral suite in 1730. 141 years later, August Wilhelm arranged the second movement for SOLO VIOLIN and he did something unique. He transposed the song down from D so that the entire piece could be played on one string of the violin, the G-String, which is the lowest register on that instrument. Here is an example of what this sounds like on the Violin G-String, thjs example with piano accompaniment—pardon the scratchy sound, is from an old 78 RPM disc in 1935. Play example – Jacques Dumont (Violin) Bach Air On The G String with Andre Collard (piano) We went from Bach's orchestral piece, to Wilhelm's transcription for solo violin, to Wendy Carlos modern interpretation with her MOOG Synthesizer. This playlist is 72% vinyl friendly. Not bad. The SL-1300G in 2025. Technics keeping it simple with the design, if not with the spec trying to convince punters they need one. ‘Coreless Direct Drive Motor Achieving Stable Rotation The use of a coreless direct-drive motor with no iron core eliminates uneven rotation of the turntable known as cogging. Also, the twin-rotor construction reduces the bearing load while maintaining high torque and reduces minute vibrations during rotation. Furthermore, the SL-1300G's motor was redesigned to eliminate subtle vibrations that could affect sound quality. To improve rigidity, the same reinforcement pattern as the Reference Class SL-1000R/SP-10R was used for the coil mounting base‘. Any track marked * has been given either a tiny or a slightly larger 41 Rooms tweak/edit/chop and the occasional tune might sound a bit dodgy, quality-wise. On top of that, the switch between different decades and production values never helps in the mix here. NB: THIS PLAYLIST INCLUDES EXPLETIVES. Lyric of Playlist 148 For the reality… Courtesy of Crooked Man, Jarvis’ by a country mile, but… For the idyll…John Sebastian. 00.00 (Intro) THE FLAMINGOS – Stars (Edit) – Unreleased demo – 1983. Episode #1 for info. 00.41 NEW ORDER – Turn – Waiting For The Sirens’ Call, 2LP – London – 2005 With Barney’s lilting, slightly forlorn vocal, a little gem nearly lost on one of the band’s least successful albums. 05.02 LITTLE NEMO – A Day Out Of Time – Past And Future, LP – Domestica – 2013 Though the track originally surfaced in 1987 on the 500 run, cassette-only format of the (debut) album. Even back then it could have been seen as yet another ‘sound’ out of Europe that seemed to echo the UK alternative/new wave scene of a few years earlier. 08.48 KIM GORDON – Not Today – Play Me, LP – Matador – 2026 Get past the intro – where it very momentarily sounds (to my ears anyway) like the batteries ran out – and Kim Gordon drifts nicely across the wash of sound. 12.03 THE COMSAT ANGELS – The Eye Dance – Sleep No More, LP – Polydor – 1981 Judging by a known set list for late Nov ’81 and the fact the band were then promoting the recently released, above album, this track was likely in the set list for my Bedford Corn Exchange gig promotion earlier that month. Big smiles when I hear them… though I’ve sadly never heard a tape of the Bedford night. 15.40 BUNNYDRUMS – Holy Moly – Holy Moly, LP – Fundamental – 1984 The short-lived, mid ’80s Philadelphian band with a quirky mix of ‘new wave’ vocal and a belting soul vocal bv in the backdrop of a low slung, punk country’ish workout. Maybe it’s the ‘yippee-ki-yay’ and pseudo peddle steel guitar? The band have been here before – and will be again. 21.30 COSTUME – Once I Loved (Original Mix) – Download only – 2021 Claudia Placanica’s slightly disconcerting delivery is always the thing for me! 23.54 THE IRONSIDES – The Web – Changing Light, LP – Colemine – 2023 Cinematically soundtracking the ’70s like a good’un! The Streets of San Francisco and its like… which is apt… as that’s where The Ironsides are from. 28.57 BABY ROSE – Go – Through and Through, LP – Secretly Canadian – 2023 My fave 21st century track of the show, Jasmine Rose Wilson (to her mum and dad) with a quivering indie soul vocal – on this tune anyway – that Anonhi/Antony and the Johnsons could have penned and rolled out, albeit with a slightly different sound, no doubt. And that really is the sleeve, honest. I could be wrong but I reckon it’s a photographer’s dud that someone subsequently had a weird liking for. I struggle to actually look at it! 31.56 THE DRIFTERS – Like Sister and Brother – 7″ – Bell – 1973 I had this single in the mid ’70s but with the years since maybe ‘softening’ the senses, this made-to-measure ballad (with lead vocalist, Bill Fredericks sounding more like Johnny Mathis than I’d have remembered) sounds better now than it did back then but in the world we now live in there will be few if any songs written like this again. I had to run the idea past one of my teenage years mates but I reckon that, along with Jimmy Ruffin’s What Becomes Of The Brokenhearted (and others, no doubt), this was a last-dance-of-the-night/grab-a-girl-type tune at Bedford Rugby Club’s Saturday night ‘discos’. I’m making this actually sound like the ’40s but it was the era and I was in my late teens… and until I find my membership card, this’ll have to do. ‘Swing to Boomerang’ indeed. I don’t think they came back. 34.52 EYELESS IN GAZA – Flight Of Swallows – Back From The Rains, LP – Cherry Red – 1986 The intro to my 1984 Rorschach Testing article below sums up my thinking on Flight back then – and though the track was being played live at the time it was a couple of years before it surfaced on the above album. EIG article, Rorschach Testing, 1984 39.22 JONI MITCHELL – Eastern Rain – Archives – Volume 1: The Early Years 1963-1967, 5CD – Rhino – 2020 Truly a legend, such is the quality of the lady’s songwriting this beaut – from a Folklore Radio broadcast, of March 19, 1967 – never even made it to an official album and though it was covered by others and turned up in Joni live appearances of the time it took until the above retrospective to be released officially. And she’ll be back here quicker than you might be expecting. 43.13 SÓLEY – I Will Find You (Live, at the KEX Hostel in Reykjavik: 30.10.13) – Stream only – 2013 With a whole different tone to Liam Neeson’s ‘I Will Find You’ :), a production from the classy KEXP and a song only found on Sóley’s 5 track, 10″ EP, Don’t Ever Listen. This take however is a far more endearing version. 45.54 NORMA TANEGA – Walkin’ My Cat Named Dog – 7″ – Stateside – 1966 Was Norma ‘indie’ before there was such a thing? Sadly, she died in 2019 but search out a short Youtube interview and snippets piece (and the comments that followed) from a decade or so earlier. It was meant to be included in a proposed documentary that never then got going. 48.06 THE ELECTRIC FLAG – Look Into My Eyes – A Long Time Comin’, CD only – Columbia – 2003 From a handful of tracks that possibly didn’t make the cut for the initial 1968 release of the Chicago soul rock band’s second album, this is one of two that were first added to the above reissue. 50.52 LOVIN’ SPOONFUL – Summer In The City – 7″ – Kama Sutra – 1966 Maybe the best known tune on the show, with a forceful sounding John Sebastian and his/their ‘city’ being New York and its Greenwich Village hub back then. 53.13 THE FORTUNES – Here It Comes Again – 7″ – Decca – 1965 Innocent ’60s ‘pop’ with a classy arrangement, and another the likes of which will never be made again… and certainly not by anybody aiming for the charts. 56.09 THE MINDBENDERS – Groovy Kind Of Love – 7″ – Fontana – 1965 Wayne Fontana at the helm (and co-written by a pre-Sager Carol Bayer, I’ve just noted) I think this might have subconsciously stuck with me enough in its chart days (I was 8), to then make it to my record collection in the early ’70s. It felt then like a great many happily got rid of their records (certainly singles) after just a few years coz every second hand record shop had loads of chart stuff from just the 5-10 years prior. I was too young to have been buying the height of ’60s ‘pop’ during its time but picking it up a decade later was dead easy. Bet this cost me 10p or thereabouts. 58.05 SPUDDHA – Ton – Unreleased demo – 2014 ‘Recorded in a single take with a pair of £100 analog groove boxes (Korg Volcas) and there's no multi tracking, effects or post processing. One of the boxes is a three voice paraphonic synth and the other is an analogue drum machine. ‘At the time I was interested in making big, immersive music with an organic quality with sparse loops and a minimal setup. There's a lot of live tweaking and you will notice that the limitations of the synth mean that 1) only 3 notes can sound simultaneously and 2) the voices interrupt each other. Also presets couldn't be saved… if I didn't record what I was doing I couldn't move onto making something else without losing it all‘. – Spuddha. ‘Spud’ to me. 01.04.46 LONELADY – Hinterland – Hinterland, LP – Warp – 2015 Julie Lonelady groovin’ a tune and lyric that should have been here before now. c/w Julie ‘helping out’… 01.09.32 JONI MITCHELL – River (acapella) 01.13.30 ATRIC & FRIDA DARKO – Hide & Seek – Download only – 2023 ‘Always trying to combine genre fluid compositions, qualitative mixing and to take the whole process with a good sense of humor‘. – Them, via Bandcamp 01.17.26 A CERTAIN RATIO – Knife Slits Water (Peel session, June ’81) – Sextet, 2LP reissue – Factory Benelux – 2013 Yep, with Martha ‘Tilly’ Tilson’s oh-so-right vocal, the slightly epic Knife Slits Water. Very coincidentally, the day ACR recorded the above Peel session (according to the Keeping It Peel site) I saw them live supporting Cabaret Voltaire at Leicester Uni and the day the session was broadcast my diary says I had a long phone chat with Rob Gretton – no idea about what, other than re what New Order were up to at that point. 01.25.11 EARL16 – Changing World (Remix) – , LP – Merge Records – 2001 I caught this on a late night KISS FM radio show. His conscious sounds here taken up a few BPM. 01.30.05 COURTNEY BUCHANAN – R U Conscious (Album version) – 12″ – Conscious – 1993 And speaking of ‘conscious’… ‘Courtney has one of the most soulful, spiritual voices to come out of the UK. His music here combines jazzy acoustic sounds with delicate use of technology on a rhythmic, down-paced head nodder. I various mixes, the track’s ‘conscious’ lyrics and impressive vocals are a fine showcase for this British talent.‘ – Ralph Tee, Record Mirror (Music Week), 3.7.93 01.34.42 DELTA HOUSE OF FUNK – Lovers & Losers – 12″ EP – Go! Discs – 1996 Decided to playlist this before I remembered it was another of Ashley Beedle’s works. So, this is with a big nod to a top lad who’s been going through the health ringer in the last few years. 01.39.38 DRAX – Middle Earth – Drax Two, 12″EP – Trope – 1993 Clear vinyl gentle German techno. 01.44.51 CROOKED MAN – Cunts – Crooked Stile, 2LP – Viscous Charm – 2026 The reimagining here courtesy of Richard ‘Parrot’ Barratt. ‘Jarvis Cocker released Running The World in 2006The line ‘cunts are still running the world' is more relevant than ever… 20 years on and Crooked Man thought it needed to be said againHis razor-sharp reimagining is a call to arms with added electronic biteHe's skipped the niceties and titled it CUNTS.Out today on Vicious Charm today. The track is accompanied by an Agit-Prop video directed by British contemporary artist Dominic McGill, who, armed with a photocopier and a scalpel, has cut & pasted a perfect accompaniment to the song – breathless and furious. They are still running the world. It’s a work of “northern genius”, Jarvis’ words, not ours‘. – Bandcamp. 01.47.21 DESPERATE JOURNALIST – 7 – No Hero, LP – Fierce Panda – 2024 Driving indie rockers ever present on Simon Williams’ Fierce Panda label, with a nod to Jo Bevan’s confident vocals. 01.50.22 GANZHEIT – Motions – ‘Summer Of ’84’ demos cassette, unreleased – 1984 With a couple of this cassette’s tracks now playlisted on 41 Rooms, there are more to come from this lost Bedford-based band. Our second set from Breakfast of Champions comes chock full of breakbeats from our one and only Rumblemunk. In his words: The set starts with a cool and funky transition track with some well-known vocals to keep folks hooked. I admit: it's hard playing after shOOey. There are literally people hanging from the rafters and dancers all over the stage, and I try my best to keep them interested for as long as possible. The core of the set is an exploration of recent breakbeats that sound minimal, but really are an evolution of the 90s dub sound that traces directly from reggae to drum and bass. The 60-70 BPM of dub double-timed up to high 130s and low 140s BPM forces faster elements like hats and arpeggios to be simplified, but leaves space for really interesting layering when slowed down to 132 BPM. There's a run from 12:30 to 17:30 that exemplifies this layering and progression before dropping back into the more open foot-stompy breaks. I hadn't played it in a while, and was sort of missing the rapid-fire rapping of Eminem, so I dropped in Eminight's Doom, my bootleg of Eminem's Without Me and Timo Maas' Doom's Night. It wraps up a nice run of Plump DJs, Krafty Kuts, and Yo Speed. The final act of the set is a trip back through time to 2004 with deep cuts from Plump DJs, Evil Nine, and the Breakfastaz (name appropriate, no?). This all leads into the final track; a breakbeat remix of Megadeth's Peace Sells (But Who's Buying) from 1988. I was looking for something topical for the current times with space for live guitar, but wasn't finding any tracks that worked. The idea of remixing Megadeth has been on my mind for a while, and the similar BPM and angry lyrics (If there's a better way... I'll be the first in line... But it better work this time) meant I had to do this. The live guitar bit didn't pan out, but production time of 7 weeks from idea to master is a new record for me. Expect an official release with live guitar and club edits later in 2026. -Rumblemunk

DJing is a craft. It reveals itself over time rather than all at once, and few embody that better than OK Williams. Active since 2019, the London DJ has built a reputation through steady accumulation rather than acceleration, becoming one of the city's most trusted and widely admired selectors in the process. Williams has never been interested in narrowing her taste into a single calling card, and it's no coincidence that her roots lie at NTS Radio. She learned to DJ at the Hackney station, starting out as a volunteer producer in 2017. Musically, she moves easily between moods—sometimes cheeky, sometimes deep—and tempos, playing everything from 160 BPM jungle and amapiano to baile funk, deep house and dub techno. For her RA Mix, Williams offers up her "purist" side. Despite her background in radio, Williams doesn't share mixes often and RA.1019 arrives as a relatively rare studio document. Recorded at home on vinyl, the 90-minute session mostly leans into '90s and early '00s techno and prog house. "Ten years ago I tried learning how to play [vinyl] on a friend's 1210s and gave up after a couple of weeks,"Williams tells us below. "Those same decks were then gifted to me years later and were used to record this mix. It's quite nice to see how far I've come." In returning to vinyl, and to the decks that once marked a rocky start, Williams' RA Mix arrives as a fitting marker for the year's end. As 2026 approaches and new resolutions begin to crowd the horizon, RA.1019 serves as a welcome reminder that the best things seldom arrive in a hurry. In 2002, the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) proposed the 3-Tier fetal heart rate (FHR) classification system that was subsequently adopted by many organizations, categorizing tracings into three groups: Category I (normal), Category II (indeterminate), and Category III (abnormal). Recently, our podcast team received an interesting question form one of our podcast family members: “If there is a change in the fetal heart rate tracing intrapartum, but it is still in the normal range (like 120 going to 150)- and variability is normal, is that an abnormality? And what is meant by a ‘ZigZag' FHT pattern (different than marked variability)?”. That is a fantastically complex question…and we will explain the answer in this episode.1.
