GDP Script/ Top Stories for September 6th Publish Date: September 6th PRE-ROLL: From the BG AD Group Studio Welcome to the Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast. Today is Saturday, September 6th and Happy Birthday to Rodger Waters I’m Peyton Spurlock and here are your top stories presented by Gwinnett KIA Mall of Georgia. Former Secretary of State staffer running for the office Gwinnett Sheriff's Office looking for applicants for Explorers program A year later, Apalachee High students recount living through a mass shooting Plus, the Stripers report with Jim Jarvis All of this and more is coming up on the Gwinnett Daily Post podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen daily and subscribe! Break 1: 07.14.22 KIA MOG STORY 1: Former Secretary of State staffer running for the office Gabriel Sterling, once a top aide to Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, is officially throwing his hat in the ring for the state’s top elections job. He filed paperwork Tuesday to raise funds and confirmed Thursday he’s running. Sterling, who fiercely defended Georgia’s 2020 election results against Trump’s baseless fraud claims, will face Kelvin King in the GOP primary. King supports hand-counting ballots, a hot-button issue as Georgia’s voting system evolves. The race is heating up STORY 2: Gwinnett Sheriff's Office looking for applicants for Explorers program The Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office is shaping future law enforcement pros through its Explorer Post 699 Program—a hands-on initiative that’s been running strong since 2006. It’s not just about learning the ropes of law enforcement; it’s about building life skills, leadership, and teamwork in a supportive, structured environment. Recently, Post 699 Explorers crushed it at the Law Enforcement Exploring Academy, completing 40 grueling hours of training—classroom lessons, intense simulations, the works. They walked away with six awards, including Leadership, Physical Fitness, and the coveted Academy Honor Graduate. Interested? If you’re 14–20, email Sergeant Adrien Filer or check out GoGCSO.com. STORY 3: A year later, Apalachee High students recount living through a mass shooting Sasha Contreras was sitting in Spanish class at Apalachee High on Sept. 4 last year when everything changed. She didn’t hear the gunshots—they were too far away—but an hour earlier, she’d been in math class with Ana Cristina Irimie. Sasha left that class smiling, not knowing it’d be the last time she’d see her teacher alive. Irimie, along with students Christian Angulo, Mason Schermerhorn, and coach Ricky Aspinwall, was killed that morning. The shooter, 14-year-old Colt Gray, faces murder charges, while his father, Colin Gray, is charged for arming him. Barrow County is still grappling with the tragedy. On Thursday, former and current students gathered at the Capitol to honor the victims and share their pain. In response to the shooting, Georgia lawmakers passed a school safety bill in March, requiring schools to track and share records of students with troubling behavior. Another law doubled death benefits for teachers killed “in the line of duty.” We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. We’ll be right back Break 2: Ingles Markets 6 STRIPERS INTERVIEW Break 3: STORY 6: Activists call for greater scrutiny of data centers Diana Dietz, a retired nurse and Fayette County resident, didn’t hold back Thursday when she spoke to state lawmakers about the impact of data centers on her community. Dietz made it clear: “This isn’t anti-AI or anti-data centers. But you need to see what’s happening.” Data centers, like Excalibur, are popping up across Georgia to meet the skyrocketing energy demands of AI. But they’re guzzling water, electricity, and, according to environmentalists like Mark Woodall of the Sierra Club, stalling progress toward clean energy. STORY 7: Rainbow Village set to expand its campus — and fight — against homelessness For 34 years, Rainbow Village has been a lifeline for homeless families, helping them rebuild their lives. Now, as it approaches its 35th year, the Duluth nonprofit is gearing up to double its impact. By the end of the month, they’ll break ground on a major campus expansion, adding two new apartment buildings to their current 30-unit setup. Soon, they’ll be able to house 66 families—single parents, grandparents raising grandkids, couples, older boys—any family in need. Families stay up to two years, learning to budget, save, and heal. Rent includes utilities, internet, and access to counseling, life skills classes, and kids’ programs. The $15 million project, funded by donations, grants, and Gwinnett County support, is 73% funded. Construction starts Sept. 29, with completion expected in a year. For details, visit rainbowvillage.org. ChessDojo's GM Jesse Kraai is always one of my favorite people to talk chess with, yet somehow it had been five years since his last visit to the pod. Jesse returned at a great time, having been both studying and competing actively, and recently achieving his goal of qualifying for the 2026 U.S. Senior Closed Championship. His recent over-the-board activity provided a springboard for us to discuss a wide range of topics, including: How he has learned to confront his fears in tough, “meat-grinder” weekend tournaments Why he believes weight training—and even certain health supplements—are important for older players, and may be the next frontier for professionals as well How the ChessDojo curriculum and philosophy have evolved in recent years I am also a big fan of Jesse's book reviews on the ChessDojo YouTube channel, so I couldn't let him go without sharing a few recommendations. We even closed the conversation by discussing Intermezzo, a recent novel by award-winning Irish writer Sally Rooney. I always admire Jesse's dedication to improvement, and it's a pleasure to hear his thoughtful perspectives on chess and beyond. Approximate timestamps of topics discussed are below. 0:02- Does Jesse ever find it hard to stay motivated to keep studying and reading chess books? 0:03- Reflections on Jesse's recent tournaments 0:05- What are the keys to GM Alex Fishbein's recent success? 0:09- What does Jesse do to work on his own chess? Aged just 13, Thomas Carrick was placed under covert surveillance by the Australian Federal Police and lured into online conversations with them, posing as fake ISIS operatives. Ultimately, he was charged with terrorism offences. The most powerful intelligence agencies in the country knew Thomas had a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder, and lived with an intellectual disability. Yet undercover operatives continued to engage with him in what a judge later described as ‘grooming’ for terrorist activities. But was Thomas ever truly dangerous… or simply a vulnerable boy, lost in a make-believe world crafted by highly trained police? In this episode, counter-terrorism expert Peta Lowe takes us inside the Thomas Carrick case, and reveals what it tells us about the rising threat of youth radicalisation in Australia. You can also hear Peta in Secrets We Keep: Lone Actor. This episode references extremist ideology and violent crime. If you need assistance, contact LifeLine on 13 11 14. The average American man carries 28% body fat—a level the American Council on Exercise considers obese. Add to that the sobering reality that heart disease has held the title of the nation's #1 killer for decades, with cancer close behind, and you have to wonder: how can the richest nation in history be so unhealthy? Here's the kicker—at least one-third of heart disease deaths are preventable, and the #1 lifestyle link to certain cancers is something as avoidable as tobacco use. In other words, much of this suffering isn't inevitable… it's a choice. But in a world overflowing with opinions about what it means to be “healthy,” what does God actually say? In this episode, Nick and Josh unpack the Bible's perspective on health, explore the idea of stewardship over our bodies, and share practical steps for living it out.Get ready for a conversation that doesn't just challenge what you believe about health—but why you believe it.Get expert fitness advice, free workout and nutrition guides, and more from Cody McBroom by clicking here.Level up your life with IDLife nutrition by clicking here.Apply to join Giant Killers here if you're a man that wants real accountability and training to become a leader.Level up your greatest asset with us in Mindset Mastery. The Dad Edge Podcast (formerly The Good Dad Project Podcast)
Have you ever asked yourself? Am I helping my kids find meaningful ways to spend their time beyond their screens? When was the last time I encouraged or joined my child in an offline activity? Do I ever ask my children to share what they experience online? Today's fathers are raising kids in a world vastly different from their own upbringing. In this episode of The Dad Edge Podcast, Larry Hagner sits down with son Ethan to hash out the stark contrasts between “growing up with TV” and “growing up with a smartphone.” Larry and Ethan dive deep into how social media impacts motivation, mental health, and connection within families, exploring why “doom scrolling” can leave kids feeling depressed and stuck. They discuss generational changes, the pressure to always be connected, the fleeting nature of “streaks” on Snapchat, and—importantly—how open, non-judgmental conversation can bridge the gap between parents and children. With practical insights, plenty of laughs, and a heartfelt wrap-up, this is a must-hear for any dad (or mom) looking for more connection with their kids. So whether you're struggling with technology at home, wondering how to talk to your kids about the pressures they face, or just looking for real-world dad wisdom and relatability, you're in the right place. Become the best husband you can: https://bit.ly/deamarriageyoutube In this vital conversation, we dig into: Understanding the Lure: Social reels are engineered for those instant dopamine hits, but they also make it harder for our kids to generate their own ideas for what to do with their downtime. Pressure Is Real: Not just on girls, but on young men too — from gym culture to physique expectations, today's teens feel the spotlight to “measure up” in ways we never had to. Screen Time Isn't Innocent: Endless scrolling can leave kids (and adults!) feeling drained and blue. Sometimes, all it takes is a thoughtful check-in (with options!) to break the cycle. Modeling Matters: Whether it's respect, discipline, or health, what we do still means more than what we say. Connection Beats Correction: When we bark “put the phone down!” we might be missing the calls for actual connection. Ethan shares, sometimes our kids just want us to start a real conversation, not hand them a to-do list or a lecture. This episode is a must-listen for any parent struggling to bridge the growing digital divide at home. So grab your headphones, and get ready to rethink how you connect with your own kids—one legendary day at a time. Here's what research and observation highlight about psychological and social impacts of smartphone and technology use on teenager and parents Studies show that 78% of teens feel anxious when they're separated from their phones. Studies show that roughly 84% of Parents Say Technology Makes Parenting More Challenging than When They Were Kids. About 52% of Adolescents Report Feeling ‘Left Out' if They Don't Have a Smartphone or Social Media. www.thedadedge.com/mastermind www.1stphorm.com/products/1st-phorm-energy

I learned something new talking with a Physical Fitness company owner in Nashville. The only gift God has given us that we can control 100% is our body. What we eat, how we take care of it, what we feed it, if we are exercising it. Reminds me of Luke 11:36 Therefore, if your whole body is full of light, and no part of it dark, it will be just as full of light as when a lamp shines its light on you. Never thought of that. That we have an obligation to glorify God with our body, and that body is the vehicle that either enables us to work with excellence or not. What will YOU do today, ensure your body is primed to work in excellence unto the Lord?

Traditional bowhunting is a family tradition for Meredith, having learned from her father and brothers at a young age. Through that, she has learned a lot of lessons “the hard way.” They discuss getting into traditional hunting as a female, injury prevention and body maintenance for hunters, learning the basics of traditional archery, longbow vs. recurve, the little details that matter when getting extremely close to deer, rollercoaster track jobs, and a hilarious first deer story.
