The Salvation Army in Petersfield is 140 years old this year. They have an exhibition on Friday 19 and Saturday 20 June at their Hall on Swan Street, so people can see and hear all about it. Nikki Grant is the Accidental Alpaca Farmer, based near Wickham with a herd of 50 and she spins her own alpaca wool. She spoke at Petersfield Women's Institute on Wednesday 10 June to the usual lively WI audience. An accredited trainer, and very knowledgeable - she’d write a book if she had time! Ben Errey and Steve Jacob have thanked the Petersfield community for welcoming the Spring Festival back to the town. Last weekend saw the annual Petersfield Football Club's Junior awards. The event recognises the best achievements from the Under 8s to the Under 16s boys and girls teams. The first week of June was national volunteers week and local family support organisation Home Start Butser, ran a lunch on Thursday 4 June as a thank you Their 86 volunteers supported 333 families in the area and 459 children, in the last year . Tweed, the springer spaniel has the distinction of being the UK's first digital asset detection dog. Martin King of the Devon and Cornwall Police Dog Section tells the origin story of this vitally important search discipline in the UK. Known as electronic storage detection, digital asset detection and various other names, Tweed's skillset is firmly established as a key discipline for evidentiary purposes within the police. Back in 2015, a trainer in his force read an article about such detection work going on in Connecticut, U.S.A. The trainer, Graham Atwood, visited and brought back the knowhow to train the UK's first two dogs. Tweed won Service Dog of the Year 2025 and was shortlisted for Crufts Hero Dog of the Year 2026. A local resident will take to one of the biggest stages on British television this weekend as the Hawkstone Farmers Choir competes in the final of Britain's Got Talent. Gwen Woodruffe is one of the members of the choir, which was originally brought together through Jeremy Clarkson's Hawkstone venture. Made up of farmers, farming families and people connected to agriculture, the group discovered a sense of friendship and community through singing and decided to continue performing together. The choir captured the hearts of viewers and judges during their audition with a moving performance of Elbow's One Day Like This, earning Amanda Holden's Golden Buzzer and a place in the live shows. Last weekend they secured their place in the final with a stirring rendition of Bastille's Pompeii. The Escapist Bar on Chapel Street celebrated their first year in Petersfield on 22 May and it has been a success. Owners Tom and Steve have another bar in Chichester as well as their own brewery. They try to do things differently like a day time quiz for mums with babies (Tuesdays at 3pm) and a local choir are now to come there after rehearsals. They offer their bar as a club room for local groups. Paula Rego: Visions of English Literature developed by the Hayward Gallery Touring opened at the Newlands House Gallery, Petworth on Thursday May 21.Dame Paula Rego, a Portuguese-British artist (1935-2022) is regarded as one of the most significant figurative artists of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. The exhibition explores Rego’s lifelong engagement with storytelling and literature through the medium of printmaking.
