A member of the Dementia Choir did a tandem parachute jump at the beginning of May and raised £1500 for Dementia Friendly Petersfield. Audrey Morton says the money will go to their activities like the Dementia Choir and their Walking Football tournament on 27 June. Their next Tea Dance is at Churcher's College on 31 May. On Saturday 30 May people are invited to the Merritts Meadow Nature Day, from 10:30am, at the top of North Road (near The Barn). It’s about celebrating biodiversity on the one acre community owned site. Coffee and Cake for Age Concern Petersfield on 20 May was a big success. The generous support of the Clavio Lounge for this simple idea was effective and appreciated , says Age Concern manager Sheridan Rocher, who tells Mike Waddington about it. A £3,500 grant award from Museum Development South West, with thanks to Arts Council England., means the Museum and Art Gallery can convert the coffee shop are into a creative space for the community to work in differing ways and media. Sue, the Learning and Community Development Officer, speaking to Mike Waddington, talks abut the space, how it will be used and also describes some of the equipment there too sample arts and crafts, very much in the tradition of Flora Twort and her workshop. The Current Affairs group this month, meeting at One Tree Books, heard Larisa Mendresse-Elder from the Kings Arms talk about young people who may be autistic, have ADHD or other different types of brain. She talks to Mike Waddington about what it means, and how we should look at 'success'. Drawing on 14 years as a teacher and her personal experience she says that the prevalence is symptomatic of a too rigid education system. Four cyclists from Petersfield’s Twin Town Warendorf in Germany were formally welcomed to the town by the Mayor, Cllr Chris Paige on Tuesday 19 May. They cycled 70 to 90 kilometres a day to get here. They were joined on the day by the Petersfield Bike Buddies. We spoke to the Mayor and Dirk (who apart from saying how friendly every one was, read out a message from Warendorf's own Mayor) . This is the origin story of the charity, Service Dogs UK, which supports veterans of the military and blue light services in training their own PTSD assistance dogs. Grayshott Cricket Club celebrates 130 years this year and has teams for all people and recently introduced walking cricket. Women’s involvement in cricket goes back a long way but facilities have lagged behind, so the Club, which is open to members from any area, recognising the explosion in womens' and girls' involvement is appealing for £10,000 to bring their pavilion facilities up to date, and they have just heard that Sports England will match-fund. Ladies Captain Al Gray, talking to Mike Waddington, speaks about getting involved in cricket and what the club offers different groups of people, including equipment. A National Emergency Briefing, attended by about 1,200 MPs, civil servants and others, last November, heard high powered experts talk about the data and trends for Extreme weather, Food security, Health, and the Cost of living. The Runny Honeys organised the ninth 5k on Sunday 10 May and 149 people of all ages ran for the cause on a blustery day, cheered on by families and supporters. Lots of enthusiasm from families running together as well as the veterans and beginners. 30 years ago, on 11 May 1996, the Petersfield Cobbler Steve White started the family business. He also married Moira that year so it’s their Pearl Wedding Anniversary too. They say their Chapel Street family business - two of their five children work there though all have had a dip, as Moira puts it - is worthwhile but it can be demanding especiaily when first starting. Hundreds of people attended the annual Grill Lecture at Churcher's College on Wednesday 6 May to hear Isabella Tree, best selling author of Rewilding. which also won a number of literary prizes and made into a film. She spoke about how they revolutionised their 3,500 acre estate at Knepp in West Sussex by bringing back nature. Talking to Mike Waddington at the event, Isabella speaks with enthusiasm about unleashing nature's ways and means and the message of hope and joy that brings. Rewilding is a spectrum that anyone from farms to gardens can participate in and alleviate environmental problems. It also, maintains Isabella, breaks down the anxiety around dealing with problems of this scale. About the Churcher’s College Academic Lecture Series: designed to inspire curiosity and deepen understanding, each year, they welcome a wide range of visiting speakers - artists, scientists, entrepreneurs, philosophers, campaigners, - who challenge students to think critically, explore new ideas and engage with the wider world. A highlight of the series is the annual Grill Lecture, established by former Head of Religion and Philosophy Judy Grill and named in her honour.
