Home Start Butser celebrates its success with families and volunteers

Home Start Butser supported 262 local families last year and their Annual Celebration at Churcher's College, on Wednesday 16 July, was a very emotional affair. The Chair, Linda Bazant, welcomed people to the celebration with Home Start now in its 27 th Year! The Mayor, Councillor Chris Paige, presented certificates to volunteers for 10 years service; and thanked all the volunteers for what he said was their "great gift of time." Lauren, a young mum with three children spoke to the meeting with Dawn, the volunteer matched to her for the last two years; they were a great double act and demonstrated the magic between them in a very productive partnership. Manager Nicola Winter presented the Audrey Award to 15 year old Joe, for his years of fund and gift raising to make sure all Home Start children have Christmas presents. The seven part time staff were thanks for all they did. Last year they raised £149,000 but spent £188,000 (the deficit covered from reserves) so Lucia Smith, the Community Development Coordinator, spoke about the need for fund raising and appealed for support - and volunteers are always needed. It was a very warm meeting with a great deal to be proud of. More at Home-Start Butser | the leading local family support charity See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The book gives a different perspective, not the manoeuvrings in the corridors of power, but from street level; just ordinary people, including children and the older people who worked the fields after the labour force - young people and animals - was mobilised for the war. There was a ‘spirit of 1914’ but lots of other feelings too - like worry, anxiety, fear. And they were common; if you stripped the nationality of the witnesses you wouldn’t know whose army they were in. She also features the impact of the dislocation in Chile, Argentina and what’s now Indonesia. She spoke to Mike Waddington at the Petersfield Bookshop, a location she loves. I spoke to a family whose mother had been safely evacuated but said a lot of damage had been done to the flat and was very upsetting for them. There was a Fire Officer there who was helping families like this retrieve belongings and making sure they had places to stay and Chris's help was asked for and he swung into action. There is a cordon on Lavant and Chapel Streets which means a number of businesses are closed. Structural engineers are to attend to survey the damage from the fire and the impact of the water necessarily used, so he area will be sealed off until then. Businesses close to the cordon are open; I spoke to Adam at Maia's Flowers who explained the effects for them. he also said business neighbours were in touch with each other and believed the damage to some was 'devastating.' The Petersfield Fire Service told me: "the team worked hard in challenging conditions.
