Nick Gogerty I A college major in cultural anthropology, MBA, investor, hedge fund analyst, entrepreneur, academic – to analyzing the nature of innovation, competition and the life cycles of companies and industries, Nick Gogerty has a unique baground. Our conversation explored how his research into survivability of companies led him to seek out first principles – a framework to apply to investing at any stage of a corporate life cycle. Nick’s work is relevant for anyone that’s involved with strategy, investing and entrepreneurship, and our discussion touched on how experience curves impact price/performance in emerging industries, the “Paradox of Growth” and how innovative criteria lead to success or failure. He also spoke about SolarCoin, which he co-founded, and his thesis about the coming clean disruption of energy and transportations.
Nick Gogerty is the creative force behind Solar Coin – a blockchain-based token that rewards producers of solar electricity. Producers (even individuals living in their home) send their solar power generation data to Solar Coin, which rewards them for each Megawatt-hour produced. The rewards can further be traded into bitcoin and or fiat currency. Health coin is another reward coin that is based on users sending various anonymous health data showing that they are exercising, eating properly, and working to counter diabetes and or pre-diabetes. Although unusual, both of these alt coins combine self reporting of data and a virtuous feedback system that socially-engineers people into “good behavior” by rewarding them with alt coins that may be redeemed for cash or traded for other cryptocurrencies. Nick also tells us how SolarCoin works to incentivize Solar Energy use and production and how SolarCoin is one of the few altcoins in existence that has genuine Economic Utility. Paul gives us a look at how the Bitcoin movement is beginning to take off in South Korea and how it’s definitely worth a visit – especially for the great food! Through brilliant graphics and a unique lens, he educates the reader on how to discern investment opportunities that go well beyond currently reported financial results to gain insights into how value shifts over time. Any investor who feels the ‘value investing’ paradigm is lacking in its ability to navigate our increasingly complex world will benefit from the tools Gogerty offers.” —Paul Johnson, Columbia Business School Normal Accidents – by Charles Perrow The Black Swan - by Nassim Nicholas Taleb Paul Bugge Bugge.paul@gmail.com Bitcoins Blues Lyrics and Music by John Barrett 2014, RJM Publishing [BMI] *While I've written a good number of Blues songs in my time, The Bitcoin Blues in an unconventional take on the Blues.
