In this episode, broadcast to coincide with the launch of the Dundee branch of Laydeez Do Comics (https://www.facebook.com/laydeezdocomicsdundee), I interviewed Nicola Streeten. Nicola is an anthropologist-turned-illustrator and comics scholar. She is the author of Billy, Me & You (Myriad, 2011), an acclaimed graphic memoir about her bereavement following the death of her two-year old son. It was initially serialised in Liquorice Magazine, a comic Nicola produced with her daughter, and it received Highly Commended in the Popular Medicine category of the 2012 British Medical Association Medical Book Awards. Nicola is also co-editor with Cath Tate of The Inking Woman, published by Myriad in March 2018.
Met with writer and artist of titles such as Billy Me and You as well as Inking Women, Nicola Streeten. Nicola began by telling me how producing her own stories in the 1990's, began her journey in to making graphic novels. Discussing the challenges of creating work which has been influenced by her own life. As well as talking about the importance of recognising the role of women in cartooning and comics. It was a genuine pleasure to sit and talk to Nicola. I hope you enjoy.
With Stig Abell and Thea Lenarduzzi – The graphic artist Nicola Streeten discusses two new exhibitions, in Paris and London, linking comics to trauma theory, radical politics and feminism; Alexander van Tulleken on a new book by two "rock star professors" that purports to provide a bold new solution to the refugee crisis; a crackly clip just a few minutes long is all we have left of Virginia Woolf's voice – Emily Kopley fills us in on the fraught context behind "Craftsmanship", a talk broadcast by the BBC 80 years ago See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Nicola Streeten and Dan Berry talk about memoir and autobiography, the necessity of community and opening doors into the world of comics.
Graphic novelists Una and Nicola Streeten discuss how graphic novels have enabled women to talk about their lives and address personal and painful issues. Una's first graphic memoir Becoming Unbecoming, an account of gender violence in the 1970s against a backdrop of the search for the Yorkshire Ripper, was described as a ‘wonderful, wonderful book' on BBC Radio 4's Woman's Hour. Una describes it as ‘Not a misery memoir. Miserable, yes, but hopeful too.' Of her debut graphic novel Billy, Me & You, about the death of her young son, Nicola Streeten said ‘I wanted the laughing and the crying. Not a misery memoir, a book for people who've had shit thrown at them'. Part of the City of Literature programme at Norfolk & Norwich Festival 2016.
