The Man Who Spoke to Plants — And They Actually ListenedWhat would you say about a man who could sit…on a cactus…in front of a live audience...…and not move. Not flinch. Not bleed.Because the cactus had no spines. Not because he found it.But because he made it that way.Meet Luther BurbankA botanist who didn't just grow plants. He talked to them. And in ways science still can't explain…they talked back.Sounds Impossible? Too Mystical?Okay—but let's talk about fries. Not that you'd ever touch fast food, right?Of course not. Never.Definitely not at 11pm in a drive-thru.Wink.But if—hypothetically—you ever had one of those crispy golden fries from a certain global mega-chain… that potato was his.The Russet Burbank.Yes, the most widely consumed, industrially farmed, French-fried starch in America—the very potato that helped launch an empire of deep-fried convenience—came from this man.The man who sat on cacti, whispered to daisies, and believed that plants had personalities. The Man Behind the Big FryHe didn't work in white coats or test tubes. He used pruning shears, a notebook, and something deeper—a felt sense of communication with plants. In the early 1900s, ranchers in the American Southwest had a problem:Cattle were starving during droughts. So they chewed on prickly pear cactus—and ended up bleeding from the mouth.Burbank heard about it.He didn't just study the cactus. He spent years with it.Talking to it. Observing. Loving it.Trying to understand the will of the plant itself.“The secret of improved plant breeding... is love.” — Luther BurbankHe bred hundreds—hundreds—of Opuntia specimens.Until one day, the cactus responded. No spines.Just soft, fleshy pads—safe for cattle. And edible by humans. To prove it?He sat on one. In front of a crowd. And just smiled. Please Share this Article on any Groups you Frequent Online… More Need to Know this Truth. Thank you! What Made Burbank DifferentHe didn't just manipulate plants—he partnered with them.He believed they had memory. Emotion.Even a kind of intelligence. He treated each one as a unique individual. He refused to follow rigid scientific protocols.Instead, he spent hours—days—walking his gardens, whispering encouragement, noting every leaf twitch, every color shift, every scent change.Sometimes he'd wait 10 or 15 years just to see if a single cross would bloom the way he dreamed.“I am not making new things... I am helping nature express herself better.”That wasn't just his philosophy. It was his entire practice.A Saint Among the RosesAnd people noticed.Paramahansa Yogananda, one of the most revered spiritual teachers of the 20th century, met Burbank—and was so struck by his presence that he dedicated Autobiography of a Yogi to him.Not to a swami. Not to a sage.To a gardener.“A saint amidst the roses,” Yogananda called him.Their connection wasn't casual—it was soul-level.On a walk through Burbank's Santa Rosa garden, Yogananda heard the words that captured the essence of the man:“The secret of improved plant breeding, apart from scientific knowledge, is love.”They stopped beside a bed of edible cacti—yes, the famous thornless kind—and Burbank elaborated:“While I was conducting experiments to make ‘spineless' cacti,” he said, “I often talked to the plants to create a vibration of love. ‘You have nothing to fear,' I would tell them. ‘You don't need your defensive thorns. I will protect you.'”And the cactus listened. That's not metaphor. It actually dropped its spines. The plant changed its biology in response to trust.Beyond Biology—Into RelationshipThis is the core of Burbank's genius:Not just biology, but relationship. He didn't dominate nature. He collaborated with it.Listened. Adapted. Guided.Yogananda was so moved by this communion that he asked for some cactus pads to grow in his Mount Washington garden. When a workman stepped in to help, Burbank stopped him.“I myself will pluck them for the swami.”That's who he was.A Walnut Tree, a Twinkle in His EyeHe went on to show Yogananda a walnut tree that took just 16 years to produce an abundant harvest—a process that should've taken twice that time. With a twinkle in his eye, he described the possibilities—for both plants and people—when guided with care and intention.“The most stubborn living thing in this world... is a plant once fixed in certain habits... The human will is a weak thing beside the will of a plant.”But with love and patient attention, even that will could be shifted.“When it comes to so sensitive and pliable a thing as the nature of a child,” he said, “the problem becomes vastly easier.”Burbank saw humanity as one vast garden. And he believed that what worked in the soil...could also work in the soul.More Than Just WooSo yeah—maybe it all sounds a little woo.Talking to plants. Believing they respond to love. But then again…He gave us over 800 new plant species. He shaped modern agriculture. He gave us the potato that fed the world—and powered fast food empires. And still, that wasn't what moved him most.He and Yogananda spent hours dreaming about the future—not just of plants, but of people. They traded thoughts about education, Eastern and Western wisdom, yoga, reincarnation, mysticism. They even brainstormed the name of a magazine together.(They landed on East–West, naturally.)And Burbank wasn't just philosophizing from the sidelines. He took initiation into Kriya Yoga from Yogananda—and practiced it with devotion.“Sometimes I feel very close to the Infinite Power,” he told Yogananda, quietly. The Human SeedWhat stirred him more than a better walnut tree or thornless cactus...was the human seed—the potential in a child. He believed, as Yogananda did, that a new kind of education was needed:One that honored nature.Cultivated inner growth.Treated kids like whole people—not just data buckets.“Schools like yours are the only hope of a future millennium,” he said. That Vision Didn't Die With ThemMy wife Chiara helped start a school for our children and others based on those very ideals. It's called Piccolo Seme (Little Seed — in English)—originally rooted in the teachings of Yogananda, and in the same soil Burbank believed in.When the world was shutting down in 2020, and everything felt uncertain, that school became a lifeline for us—and for many families hungry for something more grounded, more joyful, more… real. And now, years later, I find myself still talking to plants in the garden.Still wondering what they know.Still trying to pass that spark on to my 10-year-old son—who usually just rolls his eyes when I get too mystical about my basil. But maybe someday, he'll get it.Maybe one day he'll feel what Burbank felt. That love isn't just something we feel—It's something we grow. And it grows back. What If...?What if the wildest ideas… aren't actually that wild? What if communion with nature isn't mysticism…but science we just haven't caught up to yet? What if you could learn to listen—really listen—to the life growing silently all around you?Burbank didn't just change plants. He changed the relationship we could have with them. And maybe…that's the part we're still catching up on.Let's talk more soon.Ray “Love Grows when we Plant Seeds” Lee BaconMore chapters of the Electroculture Foundations Guide are coming soon

#28: Breakdown - What restricts SMEs from adopting sophisticated capital budgeting practices?

The lack of robust financial management is an integral growth constraint faced by small and medium enterprises (SMEs). For the sustainability and growth of SMEs, it is vital to choose the correct long-term projects. Yet, literature shows that SMEs across the globe hardly practice the sophisticated capital budgeting (CB) method. The present study identifies, prioritizes, and proposes a structural model of the barriers to CB practices. The study adopts an integrated method combining the Fuzzy Analytical Hierarchy Process (F-AHP) and the Fuzzy Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (F-DEMATEL) approach to evaluate the barriers to CB practices among SMEs in India. The prioritization obtained through the F-AHP suggests that the knowledge barrier of the decision-makers and the inherent barrier associated with the CB techniques are the most weighted main barriers impeding the practice of CB among SMEs. Also, the most important sub-barriers are time consumption and high complexity of the methods, lack of financial education and training of decision-makers, and lack of computation technology. F-DEMATEL provides a reliable quantitative measure of the association of the barriers to implementing sophisticated CB practices among SMEs. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this study is the first to identify, prioritize and structure the barriers to CB practices. Also, it is the first to apply multi-criteria decision-making tools in this field of research. Our findings can help financial managers/practitioners of SMEs to formulate sophisticated CB techniques in their investment decision strategies and efficiently manage their long-term funds. Today I want to start a fun new series on a topic that I've wanted to explore for quite a while, which is the concept of regenerative education. I've worked as a teacher and educational facilitator in different capacities since the beginning of my career, first in before and after school programs for kids, then as an arts and environmental educator at summer camps, then English as a second language in both South Korea and Guatemala, and in between teaching various technical workshops in natural building, permaculture, ecosystem restoration, the transition journey to regenerative agriculture, and of course water management and water cycle restoration. Every time I engage in these activities I gain huge respect for teachers and the incredible skill and patience it takes to be an effective educational facilitator. Similarly, I want to continue to grow as a teacher and even improve my skills as a student since I'm also always in some sort of course or other at the same time. I know this is a wide and nuanced topic and so to help me to become oriented to the considerations and scope of what I'm exploring, I reached out to Pavel Cenkl, who is the Academic Dean at Prescott College in Arizona (US) and the Founder of the Regenerative Learning Network. His work focuses on the intersection of transformative learning, community, and ecology and building a more regenerative, resilient, and equitable educational future. He's also the author of several books including Transformative Learning (with Satish Kumar), “Relational Ecologies: Building Regenerative Community Learning Networks” in Regenerative Ecosystems in the Anthropocene (2023) and “Lessons from the Periphery” in Regenerative Learning (2022). Pavel's current book in progress is titled Networked Learning: Transforming Higher Education through Distributed Learning. This conversation weaves from the troubles with traditional or conventional educational models and why they leave so many behind, and increasingly in debt, through alternative models of teaching and the potential that educational institutions really have. We explore the role of technology in learning as well as the things the digital world can't replace. Pavel also give his take on what makes effective educators and a window into their process of creating learning curriculums that are in line with the concept of regenerative education. This is the first in a series of interviews that I'm in the process of planning so if you have any ideas of what questions I should explore or who I should speak to in upcoming interviews, I encourage you to reach out to me through the Regenerative Skills Discord server.

Abhinandan asks if the party is trying to change its image by dropping names of sitting MPs with a history of hate speech. Jayashree says it is fielding new faces only to strengthen the central leadership's grip on state units. On the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act, Shardool says the law is “practically useless”. When faced with global social and environmental challenges, we can assume that we should be entirely focused on solving the problems ‘out there'. But without paying attention to our inner world and inter-being - the ways in which we relate to one another - can we really reimagine our world and enable flourishing futures for all? In this episode, Daniel and Philipa are joined by peace pilgrim, activist and former monk, Satish Kumar. Aged 9, Satish renounced the world and became a wandering Jain monk. Inspired by Gandhi, he decided at 18 that he could achieve more ‘back in the world', campaigning to turn Gandhi's vision of a peaceful future into reality. Satish founded The Resurgence Trust, an educational charity that seeks to inform and inspire a just future for all. He was the Editor of the charity's change-making magazine, Resurgence & Ecologist, for over 40 years. Satish recounts his poignant journey delivering peace tea to global leaders, advocating for mindfulness, unity, and heart-led communication in times of adversity. He shares anecdotes of bridging divides with a cup of tea, a powerful conversation and connection with nature, advocating for patience and trust in the tireless pursuit of justice. As co-founder of Schumacher College, Satish talks of regenerative practices and sustainable living, grounding his teachings in the belief that the economy should enhance human and planetary well-being, not exploit it. He reframes HR from Human Resources to Human Relationships. Painting a compelling portrait of an economy that celebrates human relationships and operates within the ecological "doughnut." We delve into Satish's guiding principles – soil, soul, and society – and how we must nurture each dimension to foster environmental and spiritual connectivity. With coherent and compassionate wisdom, Satish champions love as the metaphysical gravity that holds our universe together. This podcast is focussed on all the ways that we can bring all of ourselves to the project of total systemic change: our minds, bodies, spirits, hearts - and the practicality of what we do.  Given this, we're delighted to welcome to the podcast Maddy Harland, the Co-founder and Editor of Permaculture Magazine . Maddy, and her husband Tim, co-founded a publishing company, Permanent Publications, in 1990 and Permaculture Magazine in 1992 to explore traditional and new ways of living in greater harmony with the Earth. She is the author of Fertile Edges—regenerating land, culture and hope and The Biotime Log. Maddy and Tim, have designed and planted one of the oldest forest gardens in Britain: once a bare field, it is now an edible landscape ,a haven for wildlife, and a reservoir of biodiversity. I met Maddy first back in the early days of this millennium when the whole Permaculture team was in the south east of England. More recently, they moved to Devon in the south west, where they are retrofitting a Devon longhouse to become zero carbon and restoring an old woodland to be a sanctuary for rare species like Dormice and Pied Flyctachers - and to be a place of healing and retreat for people. Maddy has been one of the beacons of the regenerative movement for decades. She's edited one of the world's most vibrantly alive magazines for over thirty years, she's interviewed - and edited - everyone who is anyone in this field from Vandana Shiva to Satish Kumar to Patrick Whitefield hundreds, literally, of the less well known, but absolutely cutting edge, inspiring people in all corners of the world who are living the change that will take us to the future we'd be proud to leave behind. If anyone knows where we're at, and what potential there is for change, she does. So it was a joy to be able to connect and explore ideas with someone who's given their life's energy to exploring the ways that change can happen. Then in his 20s, he undertook a pilgrimage for peace, walking for two years without money, from India to America, for the cause of nuclear disarmament. Now in his 80s, Satish has devoted his life to campaigning for ecological regeneration, social justice, and spiritual fulfillment. Over the decades, he has been the guiding spirit behind a number of internationally respected ecological and educational ventures, as well as a world-renown author and international speaker. But the focus of today's conversation is his new book, Radical Love: From Separation to Connection with the Earth, Each Other, and Ourselves.
