What to listen for:“Barking should be under stimulus control. It only happens when I cue it – or when the dog finds target odor – and nothing else.” Our hosts, Robin Greubel and Stacy Barnett, unpack the reality behind bark alerts in detection work. They challenge the idea that a barking dog is always impressive or useful, and ask the critical question: can we train a bark alert versus should we? Drawing on real-world deployment experience, they explain when bark alerts are truly required (such as FEMA USAR) and when they can create unnecessary risks, public misinterpretation, and extra maintenance for both dog and handler. They break down bark alerts as complex behavior chains involving position at source, duration, distance, and continuous barking, and show how easily “criteria creep” leads to dogs leaving odor, orienting to the handler, or only offering a token bark. Using the “dog's wallet” behavior-economics metaphor, they connect heat, terrain, fatigue, and stress to whether the dog has enough “budget” left to bark at all. I'm thinking of a skinny, 18 year old inner city kid hunched over a Morse Code machine in a radio room on a warship tapping out messages somewhere in the Pacific. During World War II US Navy warships used Morse code to speak to each other while they were out at sea. My dad was a radioman. As I watched a WWII era training film to learn more I could imagine dad's finger on that code sending device. Like so many stories our loved ones thought were inconsequential we end up cobbling them together from memory and archives. But I do know this: I chose to become a US Navy Nurse motivated by my dad who chose to go war with his brothers and their friends to defend our democracy because that's what you did then. DALLAS THE DOG DEFENDS BACKYARD FROM DESTRUCTIVE COCKATOOS Colleague Jeremy Zakis. Zakis reports that his dog, Dallas, now serves as an air defense system, specifically barking at destructive cockatoos attempting to land. Dallas ignores other birds but, allied with local magpies, protects the property from these "vandals" known for damaging roofs and scavenging through trash bins.
