The legalization of marijuana will touch every line of insurance: property & casualty, commercial general liability, workers’ compensation, directors & officers liability, cyber, product liability, health and life insurance at the very least. Providing coverage to these new enterprises can be a new area of business for insurers, but it’s also a potential minefield. Employers are facing many questions and the answers are hazy at best. In this episode of CLECenter Experts, Patricia Harman, Editor-in-Chief of Claims Magazine, interviews Ian Stewart, Partner at Wilson Elser Moskowitz Edelman & Dicker to discuss the impact of legalized marijuana on the insurance industry. As a thank you to our listeners, a complimentary CLE program is offered which expands on the topic. Midwife, author, and activist, Patricia Harman has done it all. After living in rural communes during the 60s and 70s, Patricia, or Patsy as her friends call her, moved to the east and settled in Virginia. While living in Virginia she was asked many times to help birth the babies in her community. She soon realized she had a love for helping women and went to school to officially become a nurse-midwife.  She has since spent the past thirty years caring for women as they go through the process and transformation that is childbirth. In an effort to document and memorialize some of her patients’ journeys, she began writing her first memoir, The Blue Cotton Gown: A Midwife’s Memoir. After her second memoir, she realized that she wanted to tell a different kind of story and began writing fiction. My conversation with Patricia was an amazing look into midwifery and modern healthcare practices for women, along with the ins and outs of the publishing world. Patsy definitely has a way with words and she paints a vivid picture of her life and her inspiration for starting her writing career. Listen in to gain insights on some amazing topics from the font of knowledge that is Patricia Harman.  Show Notes: [01:08] Thank you for listening and elevating the stories of our guests. Patricia Harman spent most of the 60s and 70s living in rural communes in Washington State, Connecticut, Minnesota and West Virginia where she and her husband, along with a group of like-minded friends bought a farm. It was there, by accident, that she attended her first home birth. That had quite an impact; she became an RN, the first step in getting certified as a nurse-midwife, a career that has lasted more than 30 years. She subsequently re-invented herself, and became a best selling author. Patricia's written a pair of memoirs, historical/contemporary fiction and a children's book. Lots to talk about??? You bet!

We are pleased to have Author Patricia Harman back with us on DivaTalkRadio. Her last appearance was 4 years ago, almost to the day, and she returns to discuss the power of optimism and love to overcome the most trying circumstances and times. For many years, Patricia (Patsy) worked as a midwife, delivering babies and caring for women across the US and in rural communes. Her story is encouraging, empowering, and exciting.  Patsy has published in The Journal of Midwifery & Women's Health and The Journal of Sigma Theta Tau for Nursing Scholarship as well as alternative publications. She is a regular presenter at national midwifery conferences and her first novel, The Midwife of Hope River was awarded book of the year by the American College of Nurse Midwives in 2014.  About her latest book: The Reluctant Midwife The Great Depression has hit West Virginia hard. Men are out of work; women struggle to feed hungry children. Luckily, Nurse Becky Myers has returned to care for them. While she can handle most situations, Becky is still uneasy helping women deliver their babies. For these mothers-to-be, she relies on an experienced midwife, her dear friend Patience Murphy. Though she is happy to be back in Hope River, time and experience have tempered Becky’s cheerfulness-as tragedy has destroyed the vibrant spirit of her former employer Dr Isaac Blum, who has accompanied her. Patience too has changed. Married and expecting a baby herself, she is relying on Becky to keep the mothers of Hope River safe. But becoming a midwife and ushering precious new life into the world is not Becky’s only challenge. Her skills and courage will be tested when a calamitous forest fire blazes through a Civilian Conservation Corps camp. And she must find a way to bring Isaac back to life and rediscover the hope they both need to go on.

Who knew there was so much fascinating information that could be learned from a midwife? And one that also is a USA Today bestselling one too! Patricia Harman is our guest tonight on “Matters Of The Mind” with Dr. Peter Sacco, and we touch upon what a midwife does, what kind of training they can receive (as we found out there are various kinds of midwives), how much they can actually do, the various benefits and risks of home birthing, AND…finally, we talked about her historical novels about a reluctant midwife :-) Is midwifery on the upswing and becoming more popular Patricia is a wealth of knowledge, and supports both the pregnant mom and her partner, almost equally. Obviously, the pregnant mom requires more direct assistance, but can be a great help to a nervous, new father about what to do and NOT to do during the birth event. Good advice :-) Also, a midwife does not replace a partner during birthing, but becomes a director of sorts, an adviser, a coach. We also discussed how midwives can also potentially be pseudo psychologists, therapists, coaches and more during both the prenatal time, and post natal as well, as they typically spend more time with their patients than an OB/GYN does, due to various factors, none of which is poor care, but availability as well. Patricia Harman has spent over thirty years caring for women as a midwife, first as a lay-midwife, delivering babies in cabins and on communal farms in West Virginia, and later as a nurse-midwife in teaching hospitals and in a community hospital birthing center. She spent over a decade in the sixties and seventies in her wild youth living in rural communes in Washington, Connecticut and Minnesota. During the Vietnam years, she and her husband, Tom Harman, traveled the country, often hitch-hiking, as they looked for a place to settle. In 1974 they purchased a farm with a group of like-minded friends on top of a ridge in Roane County, West Virginia. Here on the commune, they built log houses, dug a pond, grew and preserved their own food and started the Growing Tree Natural Foods Cooperative. It was during this time that Patsy attended her first home birth, more or less by accident. “Some people are destined,” she has written. “I was staying at a woman friend’s commune when she went into labor and I ended up delivering my first baby.” Soon after, Harman traveled to Austin, Texas to train with a collective of home-birth midwives. When she returned, she became one of the founding members of The West Virginia Cooperative of Midwives. Her passion for caring for women and babies led her to become an RN as the first step in getting licensed as certified nurse midwife. In 1985, with her children, a yowling cat and her husband she traveled north, pulling a broken down trailer to begin her training at the University of Minnesota where she received her MSN in Nurse-Midwifery. Find out the rest of Patsy's story on the next DivaTalkRadio with Kelli Claypool and Gina Parris.
