Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for December 19, 2024 is: requite rih-KWYTE verb To requite is to give or do something in return for something that another person has given or done, or for a benefit or service that has been provided. // Sam was worried that the feelings she'd expressed on her date were not requited, but was relieved and overjoyed to learn that they were. See the entry > Examples: “I had attracted the interest of some boys ... but mostly, I wrote short stories about my crushes. The girls who summered on Nantucket and eschewed carbs? Their crushes were requited.” — Amy Kaufman, The Los Angeles Times, 4 Jan. 2024 Did you know? Requite is most familiar in the phrase “unrequited love.” Love that has not been requited is love that has not been returned or paid back in kind. Indeed, the idea of repayment undergirds all the senses of the verb requite, which include the most common sense of “to repay” (usually applied to amorous affection or feeling), “to avenge,” and “to make suitable return to for a benefit or service, or for an injury.” The quite in requite is a now-obsolete English verb meaning “to make full payment of” or “to pay.” (The verb's ultimate root is Latin quietus, meaning “quiet; at rest.”) This quite is also related to the English verb quit, the oldest meanings of which include “to pay up” and “to set free.”

How do new museums make money — really? In this episode, we lift the veil on new museum projects and money. What is “the peril of the bicycle wheel”? Is it bad to rely on “anchor funding”? How many kinds of revenue should a new museum project have? What happens if you have the wrong number? (Hint: eh, not so good.) How much money do endowments make? And what's so magical about thirds?Amy Kaufman (Principal, Amy Kaufman Cultural Planning) joins host Jonathan Alger (Managing Partner, C&G Partners) to discuss “The Money Pie Chart”.Along the way: Latin American Art curator jokes, coat-checking 200 motorcycle helmets at once, and a pharmaceutical metaphor Jonathan will never live down.Talking Points:1. In this episode, Amy Kaufman (Senior Advisor, Talent Strategies, CEO Leadership Alliance Orange County - CLAOC) talks about the profound impact of embracing one's role as a Catalyst in leadership and transformation efforts. Amy discusses how she applied her understanding of the core elements of fire – that she was exposed to from her husband Mike, a retired firefighter – to her understanding of being a Catalyst. She explains how Catalyst can embody the elements needed to sustain a fire - fuel, heat, or oxygen - during the transformative process. Each Catalyst can embody one element or even all three at any given time. Amy shares how this realization helped her drive more effective and accelerated change. Amusingly, Amy also calls out the need for sand in the fire management process – as a way to temper the burn or slow down the burnout. Join us to explore how Amy's journey and insights into Catalyst leadership can inspire others to “ignite” change and navigate the challenges of transformation with confidence and self-awareness. Become a paying subscriber to The Ankler for more great podcasts and stories like these.Today's Ankler Hot Seat podcast is hosted by Janice Min, Richard Rushfield and Tatiana Siegel, and welcomes guest Meg James, a Los Angeles Times reporter. James co-wrote an explosive and heartbreaking story – Bruce Willis' aphasia was suspected by coworkers for years – with colleague Amy Kaufman about how Willis' cognitive function became problematic and noticeable on movie sets over the last 3.5 years, during which time he made a staggering 22 films. James discusses how the actor, worked for only two days on each movie yet made a staggering $2 million on each. However, he carried on this pace while requiring an earpiece for his lines, and was part of a frightening incident involving a gun and a blank. “It just was chilling to hear that there were episodes that with less experienced and less professional people could have really been problematic and potentially dangerous,” says James. “There was a film that was shot two years ago in Cincinnati called Hard Kill. And Bruce was this father figure. And there was a reality television star, Lala Kent, who was cast as his daughter. And she told us in an on-the-record interview that…he had a line that he was supposed to deliver. And when he delivered the line, she was supposed to duck and then he would fire the gun. But his coordination didn't come off right and he didn't deliver the line. Instead, he fired the weapon.” James said the very same mistake happened on the subsequent take. The veteran Hollywood chronicler also explained the conversations inside the Los Angeles Times about tackling the difficult subject of an actor's health and how the story came together. In other subjects, the hosts discuss new details about Slapgate: Rushfield reports that audience members were openly booing Will Smith during his acceptance speech, but that it wasn't audible during the broadcast. He asks, “Did the Academy sweeten the soundtrack to drown it out?” Paging Zapruder: the hosts discuss the missing seven seconds of footage that would show what happened when the cameras were on Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith; Siegel discusses the footage taken by an audience member showing Pinkett Smith's reaction from behind. Rushfield criticizes Vanity Fair, where he had previously served as a contributing editor, for warmly hosting Will Smith at its Oscar afterparty: “You can sort of explain the Academy panic at the moment. They weren't prepared for this. Vanity Fair had [more than] two hours before he got there and they knew he was coming…so there was no last-minute panic there. They had all the time to think this through and they said, ‘Wouldn't that be great if all the eyes are on Will Smith? Wouldn't that be great if he came and danced at our party?'“Rushfield refers to internet chatter that the strange on-screen banner coming on-screen during Smith's acceptance speech was to block a Serena Williams' wardrobe malfunction. And finally, the podcast wraps with a discussion of the curious $108 million options bet on Activision stock made by Barry Diller and David Geffen that has now spawned an investigation by the Justice Department and SEC looking into the possibility of insider trading. The way I do this is with love, compassion and acceptance in a sacred space in my home where no judgement is ever passed. Reiki treatments are used for those suffering both physically and or emotionally. Valeria Teles interviews Amy Kaufman — A Reiki Master, Guided Meditation Leader and the author of “Seasons of the Soul: A Collection of Original Reiki Quotes.” To Amy Kaufman being a Reiki Master is not a profession as much as a path she followed. During a Tarot reading in 2009 she was invited to consider becoming a Reiki Practitioner and it rang true for her. As a wife and mother, Amy is a natural giver. A giver of love, support and a giver of herself. Following her path in becoming a Reiki Master has allowed her to continue to give love and support to many in need of healing. Reiki is a method of bringing light to your inner joy, a way to calm and relax you and a way to alleviate physical pain. The way Amy does this is with love, compassion and acceptance in a sacred space in her home where no judgement is ever passed. Reiki treatments are used for those suffering both physically and or emotionally. With her hands gently placed on a client, she is literally able to feel emotional issues that are causing upset in their lives. For example, pain in the heart center may be due to loss or relationship issues or perhaps a blockage in the area around the solar plexus due to a lack of self-esteem. Through conversation, humor, love and compassion, Amy is able to remove these blockages. Reiki sessions are equally effective whether a session takes place in-person or remotely. Although she lives in Westchester County in New York, Amy has had remote Reiki sessions with clients in Illinois, North Dakota, California and England. Most often, one session is not enough but is a great start! Amy also teaches Reiki in-person and via zoom! In The Devil's Historians: How Modern Extremists Abuse the Medieval Past (University of Toronto Press, 2020), Amy S. Kaufman and Paul B. Sturtevant examine the many ways in which the medieval past has been manipulated to promote discrimination, oppression, and murder. Tracing the fetish for “medieval times” behind toxic ideologies like nationalism, antisemitism, Islamophobia, misogyny, and white supremacy, Kaufman and Sturtevant show us how the Middle Ages have been twisted for political purposes in every century that followed. The Devil's Historians casts aside the myth of an oppressive, patriarchal medieval monoculture and reveals a medieval world not often shown in popular culture: one that is diverse, thriving, courageous, compelling, and complex. Amy S. Kaufman is a scholar of medieval studies and popular culture. Paul B. Sturtevant is Editor in Chief of The Public Medievalist and a Visitor Research Specialist at The Smithsonian Institution. Schneur Zalman Newfield is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at Borough of Manhattan Community College, City University of New York, and the author of Degrees of Separation: Identity Formation While Leaving Ultra-Orthodox Judaism (Temple University Press, 2020). Amy Kaufman is an influencer in her life at every level. Professionally, personally - she shows up with a big personality and changes the atmosphere. Listen in as she recounts how the "muchness" that she now embraces wasn't always a positive and how leaning into vulnerability through community added much needed grace to her life in every way. Follow Amy on Instagram @keepingupwith.ak or on her blog, here. Heather Converse is a certified life coach and owner of Tree of Life Consulting. In this presentation the superb scholars Dr. Sturtevant and Dr. Kaufman guide us into a ferocious and heatedly discussed topic and that is the concept of "race and racism in the medieval world." Was Medieval Europe purely a "white space?" Did racism exist in the Middle Ages? Are there examples of racial prejudice in Medieval literature? Are people of color seen in medieval writings? Did skin color and religion such share a connection? Are people of color seen in medieval Christianity? From discussing Black Saints and travel in the Middle Ages and the interconnectedness of the Medieval world we see a complicated history representing complicated societies, peoples and interactions. In this episode the passionate scholars Dr. Sturtevant and Dr. Kaufman superbly and necessarily take on one of the most propagandized, mythic and misconstrued topics in Medieval history known as the Reconquista also known as the Spanish / Portuguese Reconquest of Medieval Iberia. Today a variety of extremists and amateur historians use this concept as a long enduring struggle between "Indigenous Christians" and "Foreign Muslims" in which after hundreds of years Christianity triumphed and most of Iberia was united......... As appealing as this narrative may seem to many people, it is simply false. Yes, there was a Muslim conquest of Iberia in 711 and yes, there was a Christian conquest of al-Andalus which ended in 1492, but aside from these basic facts, the “Reconquista” narrative is far too simplistic, overlooks key aspects of the political and cultural history of medieval Iberia, and is largely a historiographical construction that gained currency during the early years of the Spanish empire in the fifteenth and sixteenth century. Obviously, there is a lot more that needs to be said on this issue, but this is not the place. It is merely important to underscore that this paradigm is very problematic. Description above by the academic Ballandalus website. What this heavily mythicized history leaves out is that it is not black and white... it isn't US V. THEM..... It was complicated with Christian and Muslim Kings striking fluid alliances with each other for individual dominance and gain, hybrid cultures such as Arabic speaking Christians, and soldiers of differing faiths fighting along side each other against those of whom shared the same faith... and in a world of constant change we also have minorities like the Jewish communities attempting to make their way in an often calm environment interrupted by brief occurrences of upheaval. Iberian history is complicated, all history is complicated but that is the beauty of history and complicated society. In this episode the superb scholars Dr. Amy Kaufman and Dr. Paul Sturtevant quickly walk us through the myth of the Dark Ages created by Late Medieval Humanists in the height of the Italian Renaissance who hated the idea of the Early Middle Ages. We talk about a variety of viewpoints and inaccurate ideas and images of the medieval world and how there was more of a continuity from the Roman Empire and the Medieval World into the Renaissance. We also talk about the contributions of great Islamic Medieval Civilizations that are oftentimes overlooked or ignored.
