Rebecca explains the difference she's noticed. [12:13] - When you're in a negative space, that's okay. You can move through it when you're ready, but exercise control. How do you go from med school to becoming a franchise consultant? My guest today is Kim Daly, a top consulting franchising expert, and international bestselling co-author. She is also the creator of the Daly Plan, a millionaire mindset coaching program, and the host of KimDaly.tv. We discussed Kim's path from preparing for med school to becoming a successful franchise consultant, how to overcome limiting beliefs and realize your dreams, how to develop a millionaire mindset, and more. Our conversation started with what a franchise business is, the misconceptions around it, and how it can help anyone regardless of their business experience (or lack of) take a proven business plan and become a successful business owner. One of the things Kim highlighted is the importance of setting your own goals for your business, finding your motivation to succeed, and working on your mindset to become successful because success is always an inside job. On her YouTube show, KimDaly.tv, she talks about all things franchising, from advice, tips, and facts to dispelling myths, helping people break through their limiting beliefs and success stories. This was such an uplifting conversation. Listen to Kim share why it's important to have dreams and goals, and why you NEED to spend time imagining what you want in your life. Ask yourself "What do I really want?" Because the true magic happens when we get clear and specific about what we want when we stop arguing about limitations and stop talking against ourselves. "If you want to create the outcome, you have to stop the resistance", says Kim. Another great piece of advice from Kim is "once you know where to focus your mind and your attention, success is simple." Loss of any kind in one's life is tragic and soul-altering. The grieving process that follows, while painful and difficult, is necessary in order to return to a place where you can live life to the fullest. Someone who knows a lot about this process is Kristine Carlson, the co-author of the book Don't Sweat the Small Stuff.  Richard Carlson, her late husband, wrote the book and was considered the foremost expert on happiness and stress reduction. Then one day in 2006, he left to go on a trip, and due to a pulmonary embolism, never made it home.  This harrowing experience has forever altered Kristine's life and her work. It was through the process of her own grieving that she realized how prepared she was despite the sudden nature of her loss. She had the tools to be able to find her way back to a life worth living.  Much of that was due to her late husband's work and the way they lived their lives together.  What she realized is that most people do not have the same tools and practices to help them through loss of any kind. So many women believe they're bad at negotiations because it's not a skill they've ever been successful at building. Not because they haven't sought out the knowledge and advice, but because the advice they were given was not gender neutral.  That's right. Negotiation is a highly gendered skill, and that needs to change.  Kathryn Valentine founded Worthmore Negotiations after having a bad experience with negotiations while she was in college. She had an amazing internship where she'd completed her tasks in a fraction of the time allotted. However, when it was time to present her project, she was told that she wasn't a good fit for the company.  Why? Because she'd tried to negotiate like a man.  This experience led her down the path of researching more about this issue overall. Come to find out, women really do need to negotiate in a different way in order to be heard, respected, and compensated.  Listen as Kathryn shares the three main principles women should keep in mind as they're negotiating, her 9-step framework for helping her clients become amazing negotiators, and some fantastic resources to get you started.  This is a jam-packed episode filled with thorough research and data as well as actionable strategies to get you going on your negotiation journey. Are you ready to lock in your next big compensation package?  Show Notes: [02:46] What led Kathryn Valentine down this path to helping women with their negotiation skills? I was recently chatting with a colleague and she was sharing with me her frustrations because she felt like no one was paying attention. It got me thinking about why that might be. I'm going to impart the knowledge I shared with her here. Let me know, are people listening to you?  First, be fully present when you're in a meeting or one on one. Think about it, why would someone connect with you if your mind is obviously elsewhere. Be present and focused on the person you're having a meeting with.  Second, are you stating facts and figures or are you using the data to paint a picture of next steps? Anyone can read from a report. Anyone can read numbers and figures off of a spreadsheet. If you want to be heard, you need to be able to share facts and figures in a way that tells a story.  Next, dig down to the essential information you're sharing and be sure that's all you share. You don't want to jump down into rabbit holes and start providing irrelevant information. That's a surefire way to lose your audience's attention.  Lastly, ask yourself, are you a listener? When others are talking, are you focused on them and showing them that you care about what they're saying? If you're not listening to others, they won't listen to you! What are your tips for getting others to listen?  Show Notes: [01:01] Welcome back! It's time to talk about listening.  [01:24] The inspiration for this episode.  [01:37] Tip number one for getting the people around you to listen.  [02:07] Are you just stating facts and figures or are you creating a story?  [02:48] What is the essential information you're sharing?  [03:29] Stay away from the rabbit holes.  [03:47] Ask yourself, am I a listener? Have you ever had a perfect moment on stage or during a meeting where you just felt “on”? Everything you said came out perfectly, you felt comfortable and calm, and you were connecting with your audience? You were in your communications flow.  Listen as I share three techniques to help you get into your flow more quickly.  Everything starts with breath. Not just any breathing. The deep, rhythmic breaths that you take from your diaphragm. This type of breathing will help you calm any nerves and get your body ready to perform.  Next, you'll want to visualize your perfect presentation. Imagine yourself in front of your audience, presenting your information. Imagine it going perfectly. Imagine yourself truly rocking your presentation. If you can visualize it, then your brain will believe it to be true which helps that perfect moment come to fruition.  Lastly, you want your words to connect with your body language. This means you need to channel your energy into your arms and hands so that you can better paint a picture for your audience. On stage body language is key to having an amazing presentation.  Getting into your communications flow faster means having less awkward build-up as you get into the rhythm of your presentation. You'll start off strong which will help your audience trust you more quickly and take away more from their time with you. I just had this happen to me and I'm sharing my tips and advice on coming back from a mistake while speaking.  I was recently doing an interview talking about our children's books and I heard myself say the wrong thing. Rather than letting the slip take me out of the interview, I just stopped. I took a moment to get my thoughts together and then restarted.  Beating yourself up doesn't help you say what you want to convey to the audience. More often than not, that same audience is championing you. They are there because they want to hear what you have to say, but they also know that you're human. Mistakes are natural.  Once your engagement is over, take a moment to reflect. Don't focus on the slip up only. Think about what went right, what went wrong, and how you can improve the flow of your speech so that you don't falter in the same place again.  Remember these tips as you engage in your next speaking event and perhaps some of your nerves will dissipate as well. Have you ever had a flub while speaking? What did you do to come back from it? Show Notes: [01:09] How do you come back from a mistake while speaking?  [01:50] This just happened to me during a TV interview.  [02:45] When you catch yourself saying something you don't like, just stop.  [02:56] Don't beat yourself up.  [03:45] The people who are listening are championing you. [04:51] Be able to step back and recognize what didn't go right and reflect. Wondering what the worst piece of business advice you could ever receive is? Per Sabrina Horn, it's “fake it ‘til you make it.” Listen as she shares why that phrase is so damaging and what you should be doing instead to make it instead of fake it.  Sabrina has spent decades teaching c-suite executives leadership strategies and skills. She's come by her own leadership skills through trial and error as she built her fledgling technology company. It was in the process of building her business that she realized how terrible faking it really is.  Essentially if you're faking it, you're lying. You are not being truthful about what you can deliver and what your product can do. Not only is that dishonest, it's also damaging. Both to you and your company as well as the clients you serve.  Listen in to hear more about Sabrina's journey, her new book, and her advice for making it instead of faking it.  This is a powerful message finding its way into the world at the perfect time. No matter if the conversation is about the pandemic, equality in the workplace, politics, religion, these days tough discussions are happening every day. How do you handle them? Listen in to hear my 5 ways to handle tough discussions and create an open and inviting space for conversation.  First things first, check your ego at the door. Don't enter conversations showcasing your personal opinions. If you walk into a conversation already convinced that you're right, you won't be inviting conversation.  Next you want to observe how others are sharing information. Read their verbal and non-verbal cues and alter your body language and tone to help them feel more willing to share. Then validate what they're saying.  Let them know you hear what they're saying and that you understand where they are coming from. They don't need to hear your opinions, they just need to know that they're heard.  Last, just keep listening. Keep your ears open and create a safe space for others to share. How are you handling these discussions?  Show Notes: [01:11] Tough discussions are all around us right now. Each generation that enters the workforce does so from a completely new set of life experiences and expectations. How can leaders attract these new generations and more importantly retain them? Hannah Williams has been studying exactly that and joins me to chat about working with Gen Z. Hannah was introduced to the entrepreneurial bug very early on. As the oldest of 7 in a family of entrepreneurs, she was encouraged to step out in fear and take chances. Her very first entrepreneurial experience was at the age of 12 when her father asked her to close a real estate deal.  Talk about being thrown into the frying pan! She graduated college at the age of 18 and spent the next 5 years in corporate America hearing leader after leader ask the same question, what is wrong with Millennials? Why can't we recruit them and why can't we keep them?  The research shows that the generation in question was less in relation to millennials and more with Gen Z. Listen as she shares her insights and what recent data shows about the needs and wants of Gen Z and what leaders should do to attract this dynamic new generation.  Show Notes: [01:03] Welcome back to the show and another amazing guest. Set Your Level to Calm

It's easy to be calm when you're on vacation, but what can you do to set your level to calm when you're in stressful situations? Listen in to hear three easy ways to do exercises that will take you from anxious to calm in minutes.  First, grab a pad, pen, and timer. Give yourself 60 seconds before your next meeting, interview, presentation, whatever you're facing, and write down all the words that are floating through your head. Once the 60 seconds are up, tear out the page from your journal and rip it up.  You've just released the thoughts that are crowding your mind and making space for the next exercise.  Practice intentional breathing. I like to use the box method which looks like this:  Breathe in for 4 seconds… Hold your breath for 4 seconds… Breathe out for 4 seconds… Hold your breath for 4 seconds… Do this intentional breathwork for a few rounds or until you can feel your body relaxing. This is a great way to reset your body and mind and help bring your anxiety or fear back down.  Once you've got the breathwork down, add in a little acupressure. Use your index finger and thumb of one hand to massage down the index finger of the other hand as you breathe, then go back up with your exhale.  Continue this with all of your fingers on both hands.  Let me know if these exercises work for you. Stressful situations don't have to ruin your calm. Just try these practices and set your level back to calm. Show Notes: [01:00] Welcome back to the show and get ready to be calm.  [01:53] Grab a pad and pen and give yourself one minute before important moments to write out your thoughts.  [02:55] Take time for intentional breath.  [04:04] Learn to breathe and apply some acupressure to your fingers.  [05:40] Let me know if these tips and tricks work to set your level to calm.  Links and Resources: FOLLOW ME AT: Website: https://www.deirdrebreakenridge.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/dbreakenridge/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DeirdreBreak... Emily Rapp Black is an author and creative writing professor who is making waves helping women to grapple with grief and find their own words. Her latest book Sanctuary, is her own memoir diving into her journey of loss and finding her resilience. So what does resilience mean to you?  When she was initially going through the loss of her son, people kept commenting on how resilient and strong she was, but that felt off. Resilience is not the same thing as strength. You don’t have to find it, you already have it.  Instead of thinking of resilience as something that you have to cultivate and nurture, think of it as something that you need to find within yourself. Also, know that ours is not a culture built to understand and strengthen resilience. Especially for women.  Listen as we chat about her book, her thoughts on resilience, and why she’s so passionate about teaching others. That passion comes through every single time she mentions her students and the women in her grief group.  We had an amazing conversation and if you’ve ever had a loss in your life, you’ll want to hear it! Vulnerability in leadership. They seem like two completely disconnected concepts but what Terese Lam has found is that vulnerability builds trust. That is the key to keeping your company connected while working remotely. Terese Lam started her life and her journey in Australia. She had a love for culture and HR and made her career in building company relationships. Through a series of fortunate events, she made her way to the U.S. and is now the Chief People Officer of Wind River.  While she’d already had a fairly vast remote team, there were still opportunities within the company to visit both remote and in-person teams. This past year took all that away. What has she done to keep her teams connected and thriving?  They have definitely incorporated more Zoom meetings but it’s the content of the meetings that have really changed. Instead of getting right to business, time is spent just getting to know more about her team, their lives, their struggles, and how they’re feeling about their world and work.  That little touch of the personal has made it possible for relationships and bonds to grow even stronger. Additionally, Terese is becoming more and more comfortable with showing her own vulnerability, both in her leadership and in her life.  Listen in to learn all of the amazing nuggets that Terese has to share. What do you think you could incorporate into your own culture to build stronger relationships within teams?  Show Notes: [02:36] Welcome Terese Lam to the show and learn more about her background.  [05:09] How Terese made it to the U.S. from Australia.  [06:57] What helps people to thrive in a company?  [10:39] Terese shares how they’ve made up for the in-person touchpoints that have been lost.  [14:39] Has she found that personal connection has increased in the workplace?  [16:10] One of Terese’s learning moments as she’s grown in her career.  [18:47] Why vulnerability is important in a leadership team.  [22:19] It is so important to face your fears as a leader and to lead with empathy.  [23:26] How is she staying focused and motivated?  [24:46] Terese’s advice for staying close and bonding despite the distance.  [26:11] Connect with Terese.   Links and Resources: Wind River Terese on LinkedIn
