In 1993, the remains of more missing backpackers were found in the Belanglo Forest. Despite an overwhelming amount of leads, police were unable to find the killer — until Ivan Milat's only surviving victim, Paul Onions, came forward and positively identified him. Ivan Milat finally got his day in court, but he and his family claimed his innocence. In 2019, Australian police continued to try and get a deathbed confession from Ivan before he succumbed to terminal cancer. But it appeared less likely with each passing day that the sadistic killer would finally give his victims' families the closure they so desperately need. Learn more about your ad choices. In this podcast we'll follow the trail of the disturbed Australian serial killer Ivan Milat, from his troubled youth to his ultimate death in prison. Known as the Backpacker Murderer, he preyed on hitchhikers in the Belangalo State Forest region of New South Wales between 1989 and 1993 where he assaulted, imprisoned, robbed and murdered AT LEAST two men and five women. He was one evil dude. Listen on for a terrifying True Crime tale. ★Enjoy!Newspapers around the world were in non-stop sputter detailing the discovery of bodies from a suspected new serial killer that Hell had spat up. In Birmingham, England air-conditioner engineer, Paul Onions was glued to a newspaper. The headline read: ‘the forest of death'. It detailed some bodies discovered in faraway Australia between 1991 and 1993. The victims all seemed to be hitchhikers who were either shot or stabbed. So far six bodies, in various states of decay had been found. While the details of the murder themselves were sketchy, the outline the police mentioned the killer might be using sounded strangely familiar to a close encounter he had had while in Australia just four years before. ★NEED MORE HOMICIDE INC.? We have three woman who have been murdered linking to the pub Blue Boar Inn. This was two backpackers that linked into Kings Cross at the time as I worked on the Blood Moon rituals and how Task Force Air didn't check the DNA of people linking allegedly to the Blue Boar Inn. Remember it was noted within Police reports that the two murdered backpackers of Caroline On 19 September 1992, two runners discovered a concealed corpse while in Belango State Forest. The following morning, police discovered a second body 30 metres from the first. Police quickly confirmed, via dental records, that the bodies were those of Clarke and Walters. Walters had been stabbed 14 times; four times in the chest, once in the neck, and nine times in the back which would have paralysed her. DNA was found under the fingernails. Clarke had been shot 10 times in the head at the burial site, and police believe she had been used as target practice. These two victims were seen leaving the Blue Boar Inn for a co-incidence. I was working on the links between crimes to see where the Police had missed? Superintendent Scott Cook was also a key Police figure within the William Tyrrell case and why for so long the Police had no evidence happens normally for alleged reason. I was investigating with others for links. We had a pattern where the DNA from the two victims of Belango State Forest had been murdered by many thought in the forest itself. I looked for other cases to the Blue Boar Inn as if this was a pattern their would be more? Rachelle Childs linked in to 2001. Rachel Childs murder the victim was burned and the police have through the Coroner declared murdered. We had a Private Investigator linking to the first two murders and pushing Police to look at the evidence turned up allegedly murdered by heroin yet Brian Raven didn't touch the drugs. So the car that Paul Onions described changed to what Ivan Milat had so we may have alleged murderer utilising a similar car? Yet they all link to the Blue Boar Inn? Maybe the DNA test will prove their was a second person involved? --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jenniferstone/support

The murders of the seven backpackers had dominated headlines for years. The police, psychologists, scientists, and the international media were trying to work out exactly what went down in the Belangalo State Forest. The few leads the police had all seemed to point in one direction – towards a roadworker from Sydney with a passion for guns.In this episode, your girls dive into the background of Ivan Milat and how he became the Backpacker Murderer, Jess's continued love for Paul Onions, and the unfortunate Milat family legacy. We also dive into perhaps the most burning topic related to the case – did Milat work alone? We don’t know for sure, but that’s not gonna stop us from wildly speculating!Ivan Milat was born in New South Wales in 1944. The fifth child in a line of fourteen, he had a rough childhood, hanging out with his literal gang of brothers, causing trouble as a teen, and spending plenty of time in prison as an adult. Everyone who knew Ivan knew him to be a good guy, quick tempered, sure, and a bit of a fan of a firearm, but wouldn’t hurt a fly. Richard was the wildcard Milat, the one you needed to watch out for. But the evidence against Ivan was starting to pile up, piece by piece, until one day it all came crashing down. While we know for sure that Ivan Milat was responsible for the Backpacker Murders, there are still many lingering questions about the case. Firstly, did Ivan work alone? The police, forensic psychologists, and the usual collection of armchair detectives on the internet think it is very possible he had an accomplice. And were the bodies in Belangalo State Forest Ivan’s only victims? With so many missing people in Australia and with a guy as batshit as Milat, it’s hard to think he stopped at seven. Our main source this week was again the excellent Sins of the Brother. Please read it.You can find more information than you can poke a stick at online about this case but here’s some links to get you started.Firstly, read a slightly dry but very detailed sum up of the case in one of Ivan Milat’s appeal documents here http://www.austlii.edu.au/cgi-bin/viewdoc/au/cases/nsw/NSWSC/1998/795.html?context=1;query=ivan%20milat;mask_path=A very detailed exploration into the case with a convenient timeline and some Web 1.0 goodness can be found herehttp://www.geocities.ws/darragh_scully/ivan_millat.htmlRead about the trial and some info on R vs Milat: A Case Study in Cross Examination herehttps://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/news/nsw/the-prosecutors-question-that-was-the-beginning-of-the-end-for-serial-killer-ivan-milat/news-story/0cdc7bf3ae93319ab26d14bc732cc34bTo read one of the lead detectives and forensic psychologists in conversation about the case, go herehttp://medicolegal.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/The-belanglo-enigma.pdfFind us on FACEBOOK, TWITTER, INSTAGRAM or EMAIL us on murderinthelandofoz@gmail.com
The Backpacker Killer. November, 1993. New South Wales, Australia. Three more bodies are recovered from the NSW Belanglo State Forest, bringing the count to seven. Now the police had to admit that a serial killer was abducting and murdering backpackers. The killer was dubbed The Backpacker Killer. His modus operandi was to take his victims to the forest where he disabled them by severing their spinal cords then murdered them in various ways. Because of this, police considered that there may have been more than one person involved. But a man named Paul Onions would contact authorities to tell them of his abduction story. This would focus the investigation on a single person Onions identified in a video lineup; Ivan Milat. Ivan owned many firearms, was very strong, and came from a large, tight-knit family. A raid on the Milat properties in 1994 would produce 100s of items of evidence and yet he denied any involvement.
Join comedians Rachel Fairburn and Kiri Pritchard - McLean as they explore a shared passion, serial killers.
