Indi is joined by Billie Mcloughlin and Kevin Fitzgerald for a busy episode covering AI's move into tax preparation, Xero's repositioning as an operating system, and a string of practical product updates across the accounting tech stack. Indi opens with news of Advancetrack's upcoming GBX conference on 12th May at the National Gallery, where the 2026 Accounting Talent Index launches. Early data suggests 70% of firms say workloads are increasing pressure on senior staff, cutting against the narrative that AI is the profession's most urgent problem right now. Kevin adds context with Employment Hero's March Jobs Report, drawn from roughly 120,000 UK employees. Headline employment growth is positive at just over 5.3% month on month, but wage growth at 8.8% remains high and SME hiring confidence is wobbling again as April's employer legislation updates and the Fair Work Agency's growing focus create fresh uncertainty. Billie recalls a live demo she recorded: Perplexity's new Computer tool filling out a US tax return end to end, pulling documents, error-checking and asking clarifying questions. It doesn't file, but it does everything up to that point. US-only for now, but a clear direction of travel. Kevin links it to a bolder claim from Tom Blomfield, ex-CEO of Monzo, who argued income tax collection could be restructured within five years, cutting out advisers and individual returns. The hosts are sceptical, but take the underlying question about accountant value seriously. Mayday gets a positive segment covering a strong Q1: centralised control of contacts, chart of accounts and tracking categories across multiple Xero entities, plus the acquisition of Easy Month End. Indi raises the question of whether a Xero acquisition is on the cards. Xero OS generates the most debate. Billie breaks down Jax shifting from assistant framing to something closer to an AI CFO. Indi's reading is more structural: the move from ecosystem to operating system signals Xero closing the dome around its data, compressing the opportunity for apps sitting on top of it. Kevin covers Oracle's Fusion Finance agentic applications, where agents chase payments and manage collections without waiting for human input, and notes AI is collapsing roadmap timelines from twelve months to weeks. Also covered: Dext Payments moving into payroll payments; Briefcase One adding live bank feeds with automated categorisation and ledger posting; FreeAgent's MTD bulk workflow release; and GoCardless cutting 90 jobs while targeting EBITDA positive in 2026. FreeAgent is the proud sponsor of this episode. FreeAgent is an HMRC-recognised MTD solution for sole traders, landlords and CIS clients. On this episode of Movie Torture, Brad and Jacob kick things off by roasting MTD for buying a Honda Civic like he just joined the underground street racing scene at age 87. From there, the show immediately derails into couch trauma, Fear Factor takes, and whether Jacob's dark lighting setup makes him look more like a Dateline informant or a full-blown rat. Then the boys finally get to Primate, a movie they were way too excited for, only to discover it's basically a rich family drama interrupted by a chimp in a Party City suit going absolutely feral. Along the way, Brad gives a one-minute synopsis that somehow includes rabies, deaf dads, Deadpool guys getting face-ripped, and the phrase “dead monkey, bad monkey,” while Jacob rightfully asks why a horror movie in 2026 still has ten straight minutes of unsubtitled sign language. They also debate whether the monkey is CGI or just Troy in a fur suit, whether chimps can swim, whether a pet monkey is a power move or a facial reconstruction waiting to happen, and whether MTD would ride a Walmart scooter just for the free parking. By the end, the monkey is ripping jaws off, scalping pool girls, handing out body parts like party favors, and somehow the only people who live are the ones who absolutely deserved to die.In short: Primate is a movie where everyone reaches for their phones, nobody grabs a knife, and Brad and Jacob somehow spend just as much time talking about monkey murder, Czech Cola, and Komodo dragons at Walmart as they do the actual plot.
Ryan Pearcy, Heather Smith and Leigh Stallard return for Season 3 of Digi-Tools in Accrual World, covering the biggest stories in accounting tech this week. Xero has launched a new accounts production workflow in partnership with BGL, bringing year-end workpapers directly into the platform. Heather reports from Australia, where the feature has been live for some time, and flags a data access issue that UK firms need to know about before they rely on it. Xero has also announced a multi-year partnership with Anthropic, the company behind Claude. The announcement has generated significant discussion in the profession, not least because Xero previously stated that JAX would not provide financial advice. The new partnership appears to suggest otherwise. Ryan, Heather and Leigh examine what that means for accountants, who carries the liability, and whether AI becoming the default interface puts the underlying ledger at risk of becoming irrelevant. US accounting platform Aiwyn has embedded its tax product inside Claude, allowing users to generate a 1040 tax return through the AI interface via an MCP-style connection. The hosts debate whether building core workflows on top of an LLM is a sound strategy right now, and whether the product will still be differentiated in two years once the base models catch up. NetSuite used its Suite Connect London event to shift the conversation from co-pilot to autopilot, outlining plans for autonomous period close through its NetSuite Next platform. Leigh invokes Jurassic Park. Ryan pushes back with a transactions-first argument. Neither of them is entirely wrong. Also covered: TaxNav launches Navi, a green furry MTD mascot of questionable necessity; TaxCalc Engager announces a collaboration with Virtual Cabinet and Workiro to embed document management into tax and accounts workflows; and Xero's credit note bank rec update gets more credit than the headlines suggest. Check if your dental practice qualifies for capital allowances here >>> https://www.dentistswhoinvest.com/chris-lonergan———————————————————————UK Dentists: Collect your verifiable CPD for this episode here >>> https://courses.dentistswhoinvest.com/smart-money-members-club———————————————————————Frozen thresholds can be more painful than a tax rate rise, and dentists are feeling it everywhere: higher marginal rates, the £100,000 personal allowance trap, and less room for error when cashflow is tight. I'm joined by accountant Matthew Norton from DJH to map the UK tax changes that matter most in the 2026 to 2027 tax year, with plain-English explanations and the practical “what would you do differently on Monday?” angle. We dig into fiscal drag, National Insurance pressures on practices, and the student loan reality for Plan 2 dentists, including why repayments can barely touch the balance when interest is high. Then we get into the big behavioural shift: Making Tax Digital for Income Tax. If your self-employed turnover crossed the £50,000 line, quarterly reporting and the right MTD software are now essential, and getting set up early is the difference between smooth compliance and last-minute panic. From there we tackle dividend tax changes, the tiny dividend allowance, and why the old salary-and-dividends routine needs a fresh look for limited company dental practices. We also cover tax-efficient choices that can still work, like keeping money inside the company when you don't need to extract it, the logic behind holding companies and family investment companies, and the current incentives around electric company cars and benefit in kind.To finish, we look forward: Business Asset Disposal Relief and capital gains tax changes that affect practice sales, the April 2027 cash ISA limit shift for under-65s, and the growing concern that private pensions may be pulled into inheritance tax planning. Subscribe for more dentist-focused money and tax planning, share this with a colleague, and leave a review if you want more deep dives like this.———————————————————————Disclaimer: All content on this channel is for education purposes only and does not constitute an investment recommendation or individual financial advice. On this episode of Movie Torture, Brad, Jacob, and the legendary beach-dwelling MTD set out to review The Housemaid, but as usual the movie takes a backseat to discussions about dispensaries popping up on every corner, Brad's aunt accusing him of being gay at family gatherings, and a deeply philosophical debate about whether it's acceptable to “duke on top of a duke” in a gas station bathroom.Things spiral quickly.Brad debuts a new sponsor called Sweeney Suppressant, a spray designed to help men focus on the plot whenever Sydney Sweeney appears on screen, while Jacob questions how anyone in Hollywood stays married if their job description involves making out with coworkers for millions of dollars.Eventually they remember there's a movie to talk about. The Housemaid starts with Sydney Sweeney taking a job cleaning a mansion where the family appears normal for about ten minutes before the wife begins screaming, firing her repeatedly, and trashing the house like a raccoon on espresso. Meanwhile the husband turns out to be a manipulative psycho who locks women in attic bedrooms and assigns bizarre punishments like pulling out 100 hairs or cutting yourself with broken china. But the twist?Sydney Sweeney isn't the victim. She's basically Dexter for abusive husbands. The guys break down the wild third act where teeth get ripped out with pliers, fancy plates get smashed out of pure revenge, and the villain gets locked in his own torture room like a DIY Saw trap.Along the way the conversation somehow detours into:Brad's dad getting locked inside a car at a dealershipWhether Betty Rubble was hotter than Wilma (again)Kirk Cameron and the Left Behind franchiseThe possibility of Movie Torture reviewing Christian apocalypse movies nextMTD's inevitable death in every episode scenarioBy the end, everyone agrees The Housemaid is actually good — which almost never happens on this show — earning a rare Movie Gold rating and immediate excitement for Housemaid 2.In summary:A thriller about a killer housemaid somehow turns into a podcast about dispensaries, church movies, gas station bathroom ethics, and why Brad believes hiring Sydney Sweeney as a house cleaner would destroy most marriages.Just another completely normal episode of Movie Torture. Making Tax Digital (MTD) has finally become a reality, more than a decade after it was first announced. Richard Hattersley reflects on the journey so far, from the highs and lows to where MTD stands today, including the National Audit Office report, confidence levels, costs and how the initiative has changed. The team also argues that the real crunch point is not 6 April, but the first filing deadline on 7 August, as they discuss systems, preparedness, sign-ups and what comes next. Tom Herbert then turns to another hot topic, artificial intelligence (AI). After attending NetSuite, he shares what he saw, what was announced and the key themes that emerged. He also looks at OpenAI's growing interest in tax policy, outlining what has been said and what it could mean for the profession. Finally, Matthew Ord reflects on the first series of Inside the Numbers, which featured conversations with FDs and CFOs about the metrics they use. The team explores finance leaders' attitudes to technology and automation, what comes next as AI frees up more time, and why KPIs matter as early warning systems. Stay tuned for the second series of Inside the Numbers on AccountingWEB.

Is your accounting tech stack becoming "Accountable" or just more confusing? From AI agents that hunt through your inbox to the battle over mid-market marketing, the latest episode of the #DigiToolsinAccrualWorld podcast is packed with the insights you need to navigate the noise. Here's what we're breaking down this next week: The Main Stories FreeAgent's Bank-Led CIS: We explore how FreeAgent is tackling the MTD for Income Tax headache by allowing CIS transactions directly from bank coding. As Lara Manton C.MICB puts it, most subcontractors don't care about complex domestic reverse charges - they just care about the money in. This could be a massive win for reducing the admin burden. Fathom's New AI Commentary:
As the tire and automotive industry continues to navigate shifting economies, fluctuating demand and changing consumer habits, how are tire dealer program groups stepping up to meet the moment? In this special episode of The Modern Tire Dealer Show, MTD's managing editor, Sara Welch, talks with MTD's associate editor, Aden Graves, to break down the latest updates for program groups in 2026 and how tire dealers should best prepare their businesses.
This week on Movie Torture, Brad, Jacob, and MTD set out to review Agent Recon… and accidentally spend most of the episode questioning reality, anatomy, and whether MTD is secretly the Matrix. The movie itself? Chuck Norris plays a robot… kind of. There's red ash, magic mana, aliens, and a rule that you can only kill enemies by shooting them in the liver—which immediately sends the guys into a full breakdown because none of them know where the liver is. At one point, the conversation turns into a survival strategy of “just aim somewhere in the torso and hope for the best.”But the real highlight isn't the movie—it's the spirals.Within minutes, they've:Debated uploading MTD's brain into a cyborg and whether he'd save humanity or just bring a TV remote to a gunfightPlanned a full production of Monkey Cop like it's a legitimate Hollywood contenderArgued about who would survive an alien invasion (spoiler: nobody, because they're all aiming for the wrong organs)Gone deep into Total Gym infomercials and somehow turned it into a Rocky-style training montage between two grown men in an apartmentDiscussed who's dying first between Dick Van Dyke and Mel Brooks like it's a Vegas betting lineAnd briefly turned the episode into an emotional moment about not wanting each other to die… before immediately going back to poop jokes and cyborg dadsMeanwhile, Agent Recon keeps happening in the background—barely. There's a random daughter subplot nobody asked for, villains that look like the same three guys in different hoodies, and Chuck Norris showing up just long enough to remind everyone this movie technically has a legend in it.By the end, there's an explosion, a memory chip, and zero clarity—just like the episode itself. It's less of a movie review and more of a chaotic hangout where the movie loses and the tangents win.Follow Movie Torture here:https://www.instagram.com/movietorturepod/Buy Merch here:https://www.bonfire.com/store/the-hopecast-network-swag/This show is brought to you by The Hopecast Networkhttps://www.instagram.com/hopecastnetwork/

Making Tax Digital (MTD) is one of the biggest changes to the UK tax system in decades, and it will significantly impact self-employed business owners and landlords who own residential property in their personal name. If you currently submit a Self-Assessment tax return once a year, these new rules will change how and when you report income to HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC). Starting 6 April 2026, under the new Making Tax Digital for Income Tax (MTD for IT) rules, millions of UK taxpayers must keep digital records and submit quarterly updates using approved accounting software apps listed on the HMRC website. This affects self-employed individuals and landlords earning above the income threshold from trading or property. Instead of one annual tax return, you'll submit five - four quarterly updates plus a final declaration each year. This means accurate record-keeping, more frequent reporting, and potentially higher accounting and software costs for small business owners and property investors. For many landlords with residential property in their own name, especially those managing multiple rental properties, adopting digital bookkeeping software will be essential. This means switching from spreadsheets or paper records to compliant cloud accounting platforms. HMRC say the aim of MTD is to reduce errors and modernise the UK tax system, but it also means more red tape, admin and planning for millions taxpayers. Self-employed workers and landlords should start preparing early to avoid penalties and stay compliant when the rules fully apply. Landlords already hit by Section 24 tax changes and the Renters Rights Act should seek professional advice and avoid ignoring the changes which are coming next month. On this episode of Movie Torture, Brad, Jacob and MTD attempt to review Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle, but instead spend most of the episode debating who's hotter (Lucy Liu vs. Cameron Diaz), planning MTD's funeral, and figuring out who inherits the Hopecast Network when Brad inevitably dies mid-podcast.Before the movie even gets going, Jacob celebrates his 85th episode milestone while Brad reminds him that his job security is entirely based on pretending Jacob is the funniest person on the show. Meanwhile, MTD continues his role as the mysterious, silent, possibly imaginary overlord of the podcast, but with worse communication skills and a tendency to ignore texts.Eventually, they remember there's a movie.Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle is described as a film where Hollywood gathered every famous person from the early 2000s, paid them millions of dollars, and then forgot to write a coherent plot. Instead, the movie focuses on three “agents” whose primary mission appears to be fighting crime while wearing increasingly impractical outfits and defying every known law of physics.Highlights include:A Mongolian bar fight that looks like it was filmed in 1845 but somehow includes a mechanical bullA helicopter that gets started mid-air while free-falling (a moment Brad compares to Kobe Bryant)Drew Barrymore sliding across tables without moving her feet like she's in The Matrix: Low Budget EditionLucy Liu being criminally underpaid while also being the only competent person in the movieCameron Diaz earning $20 million to act confused for two hoursThe guys also uncover the true plot of the movie, which involves:Two magic rings (basically Lord of the Rings for people who failed geometry), a witness protection list nobody understands, and Demi Moore showing up to remind everyone she's still the coolest person on screen. But the real story of this episode isn't the movie—it's the complete unraveling of the podcast itself.Somehow, the conversation spirals into:Whether MTD died by driving into a Country Kitchen and ordering waffles afterwardA full succession plan where Jacob inherits the network and immediately cancels everything to avoid paying podcast hosting feesBrad forcing his son into podcast slavery via his willA hypothetical skydiving scenario where Brad tries to take Jacob and MTD down with him out of spiteThe possibility of replacing Brad with a hologram or re-releasing old episodes like he's a podcast TupacFollow Movie Torture here:https://www.instagram.com/movietorturepod/Buy Merch here:https://www.bonfire.com/store/the-hopecast-network-swag/This show is brought to you by The Hopecast Networkhttps://www.instagram.com/hopecastnetwork/
On this episode of Movie Torture, the boys somehow turn Revenge of the Nerds into a full-blown discussion about boogers, mooning, prison sentences, and whether MTD belongs with the Alpha Betas or the Lambda Lambdas. Brad immediately hijacks the show by proudly announcing that if anybody on the podcast is Booger, it is 100% him, then follows it up with a Navy story about pulling a booger the size of a corn kernel out of his face like he just discovered buried treasure. Jacob contributes by explaining the emotional devastation of thinking you have a bat in the cave and finding out your nose was just lying to you.Once they finally remember there is a movie to talk about, Brad gets sentimental about Robert Carradine, because to him Lewis will always be a legend, a laugh, and a man who somehow made giant glasses look cool. The guys agree the movie is a complete 80s time capsule, right down to the outfits, the soundtrack, the robot side chick, and a fraternity system that would now lead to about 47 separate felony counts and a Dateline special. From there, the episode becomes a courtroom drama disguised as a comedy recap. Brad and Jacob basically spend an hour deciding which characters are going to jail and for how long. The nerds are somehow lovable and criminal at the same time, the jocks are idiots, and everyone in the movie appears to be one bad decision away from doing 15 to life. Brad repeatedly reminds everyone that Lewis is not surviving modern law enforcement, especially after the Darth Vader moon bounce incident, while Jacob tries to keep at least one foot in reality and point out that none of this is remotely okay, even if it is funny. They also stop the movie several times to argue about whether Brad is actually a nerd, which turns into a side quest about Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Star Wars, and Brad's refusal to be grouped with “full-course nerds.” Jacob insists Brad is Lewis, Brad insists Jacob is Gilbert, and somewhere in the middle MTD gets promoted to Lewis's dad, which honestly feels right.Other major topics include: whether MTD ordered the Honda Civic as a lateral move, whether random mooning should be illegal, whether George Soros funded the nerd house rebuild, whether the Asian nerd's tricycle beer race was secretly the best event in cinema history, and why Brad's son apparently turned into a ding-dong-ditching athlete just to prove Brad can run stairs.By the end, Brad once again reminds the audience that ChatGPT says he's funnier than Jacob, which Jacob clearly takes as a personal act of war.
This week the guys head to Screamville and talk about Scream 7. They open the show wondering why MTD isn't there. He is buying a new Civic and Brad wonders if it's a lateral move from a Subaru. They finally get into Scream and wonder what it would be like if there was a Ghostface in every state. MTD trains each one to make them the killing machines they need to be. The guys wonder about Ashley and how she is doing since this is her favorite movie series of all time. Brad laments the fact that Neve Campbell is in this movie and wishes Jenna Ortega was in this movie. The guys wonder what a reality real world house would be like if it had iconic slasher killers in it just hanging out while MTD is the host. Plus, The wonder who would win in a fight, Ghostface or Jason Voorhees. UK Dentists: Collect your verifiable CPD for this episode here >>> https://courses.dentistswhoinvest.com/smart-money-members-club———————————————————————The clock is ticking on Making Tax Digital, and we're cutting through the noise with a straight-talking guide tailored for UK dentists. If you earn self-employment income as an associate or rental income from buy‑to‑lets, this is the moment to get clear on thresholds, timelines, and the smartest way to stay compliant without drowning in admin. We unpack the real meaning of “relevant income” and why HMRC looks at gross receipts, not profits, when deciding who must file quarterly. You'll learn exactly who is in scope right now at £50,000, why PAYE and dividends don't count for MTD for income tax, and how planned drops to £30,000 and £20,000 will bring many more clinicians into the regime. We also cover the penalty system you need to avoid: an initial grace year for late submissions, points that stack to a £200 fine, and a 24‑month compliance runway to reset. Most crucially, we explain the three‑year lock-in once you're on the system and how that affects timing if you're considering incorporation. From there, we move to tools and tactics. Prefer minimal effort? Ask your accountant about bridging software so you can send simple spreadsheets or bank statements each quarter and let them handle the submission. Want more control and real-time insight? We compare software options like FreeAgent, Sage, Xero and QuickBooks, highlighting free tiers, bank feeds, common setup pitfalls, and how live data can help you steer clear of the 60 percent effective rate band with timely pension and expense planning. We set out the dates that matter: Q1 runs 6 April to 5 July, with the first update due 7 August, and why registering before 5 April buys breathing space and avoids easy points. We finish with a practical checklist you can act on today: register for MTD or ask your accountant to do it, choose between full bookkeeping or a bridging route, and schedule your July data handover so the first submission lands on time. It's a clear, calm path through a complex change, built for busy clinicians who value certainty and time.———————————————————————Disclaimer: All content on this channel is for education purposes only and does not constitute an investment recommendation or individual financial advice. professorjrod@gmail.comIn this episode of Technology Tap: CompTIA Study Guide, we dive deep into the concept of cybersecurity risk and why it's a critical factor in your IT skills development. Forget common myths and technical jargon — this episode breaks down risk into understandable elements: threat, vulnerability, likelihood, and impact. Perfect for CompTIA exam candidates, we provide practical IT certification tips that turn abstract fears into concrete strategies to protect your digital assets. Whether you're prepping for your CompTIA exam or interested in technology education, this discussion equips you with essential knowledge for effective tech exam prep.We walk through inherited risk (your baseline exposure) and residual risk (what remains after controls), and explain why zero risk is a dangerous fantasy. From there, we unpack the four response strategies—avoidance, mitigation, transfer, and acceptance—using clear examples you can bring to your Sec+, Net+, or A+ studies and your day job. You'll learn when quantitative numbers help, when qualitative scales are more honest, and how heat maps can mislead when assumptions go unchallenged.Because modern exposure doesn't end at your perimeter, we dive into vendor risk management: evaluating partners before you sign, setting expectations with NDAs, MSAs, SLAs, SOWs, and rules of engagement, and keeping continuous oversight to match changing realities. We also connect the dots to business impact analysis, translating risk into recovery targets with MTD, RTO, RPO, and WRT so you prioritize mission essential functions instead of treating every system the same. Finally, we clarify the role of internal and external assessments and demystify penetration testing as a snapshot that challenges assumptions rather than a guarantee of safety. If you want security that aligns with real-world priorities, this conversation gives you the mental model and vocabulary to make better decisions under uncertainty. What does success look like for HMRC with Making Tax Digital – and what does it really mean for the bookkeepers doing the work on the ground? In this Leadership Takeover Session, Craig Ogilvie, HMRC's Director for Making Tax Digital, explains the “why” behind MTD for Income Tax, how it will change the UK tax system, and why he believes bookkeepers are central to making it work for small businesses. Get step by step guidance on MTD for Income Tax https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/making-tax-digital-for-income-tax?Utm_source=6fb Craig shares his journey from a low-income upbringing in Scotland, through 20+ years in government delivery, to leading some of the UK's biggest programmes – including the furlough scheme during the pandemic. He explains how his parents' values around kindness and optimism shaped his leadership style, why he focuses so heavily on people and psychological safety, and how that translates into the way he runs the MTD team today. You'll hear a clear, human explanation of what MTD for IT actually is: digital record keeping, quarterly updates and software-based filing for millions of self-employed people. Craig talks about the three big reasons behind it – reducing errors in the tax gap, modernising the UK's tax infrastructure, and creating better customer service through more timely data and nudges – and why he sees bookkeepers as uniquely placed to turn that into better conversations about cash flow, credit control and business performance. He also explains the scale of the change: rebuilding core systems, working with third-party software through APIs, and designing multiple agent functionality so both accountants and bookkeepers can support the same client. Craig describes travelling around the UK to meet real practices, how those conversations led to changes like faster sign-up journeys and multiple agent access, and why HMRC is committed to genuine co-creation rather than “rubber-stamping” decisions already made. The episode goes deeper into social mobility, confidence and financial understanding. Craig talks about seeing his dad's January “bag of receipts”, the construction sector's heavy representation in the first MTD cohort, and the financial literacy gap facing many sole traders. He reflects on sessions with unrepresented business owners, where a clear explanation – often from a bookkeeper or accountant – can quickly change how someone feels about digital tools, quarterly reporting and understanding their numbers. ----------------------------------------------- About us We're Jo and Zoe and we help bookkeepers find clients, make more money and build profitable businesses they love. In this Leadership Takeover Session, Stuart Miller, Director of Public Policy and Technology Research at Xero, shares what's really happening behind the scenes with MTD, AI and financial literacy – and what it all means for UK bookkeepers. If you've ever wondered who sits in the rooms with government, regulators and tech companies speaking up for small businesses and their advisers, this episode joins those dots. Stuart didn't set out to be an accountant. He fell into practice to avoid paying rent to his parents, trained through AAT, and built his career in firms where tattoos, shaved heads and “not fitting the mould” were still frowned upon. He talks about the managers who backed him, the crying client whose tax-return anxiety helped him find his purpose, and the R&D projects where better tax advice funded real-world change – like extracting myrrh oil to support schools in Africa. Today, his role at Xero spans smart data, late payments, e-invoicing, unique business identifiers, AI policy and MTD. He explains what his week actually looks like: responding to consultations, sitting on smart data groups, meeting departments like Business and Trade, and feeding the voice of accountants and bookkeepers into policy. Find out about the benefits of becoming a Xero Partner, here: https://www.xero.com/uk/partner-programme/?UTM_Source=6fb The conversation also tackles AI. Stuart sees AI as an efficiency driver, not a replacement for bookkeepers. He talks about using AI to speed up reconciliation, summarise long email newsletters and surface insights, while the real value sits in the 20% of work that is deeply human: handling ambiguity, context and emotion. A big theme is financial literacy and social mobility. Stuart is passionate about closing the gap for people who were never taught about interest rates, APR or cash flow at home or at school. He talks about Xero's financial literacy campaign, which offers bite-size guidance and mentoring for people from disadvantaged backgrounds or those starting a business with no financial training. Crucially, it's open to everyone, not just software users, and supported by accountants and bookkeepers who volunteer their time to help. ----------------------------------------------- About us We're Jo and Zoe and we help bookkeepers find clients, make more money and build profitable businesses they love. How to Get Visible as a Bookkeeper: Sage's Chris Downing on Confidence, Tech and Career Opportunities In this Leadership Takeover Session, Sage's Chris Downing shows bookkeepers and accountants exactly how to get more visible, build a reputation that feels authentic, and turn their experience into new opportunities – without pretending to be someone they're not. Drawing on 19 years in practice (from junior to partner) and his current role as the “voice of the accountant and bookkeeper” inside Sage, Chris explains what visibility really means, why it matters, and how to start even if you feel shy, busy or unsure what to say. Read the GoProposal by Sage guide on how to be an authoritative accountant (or bookkeeper) and establish trust https://goproposal.com/blog/trusted/?UTM_Source=6FB Hosted by Jo Wood and Zoe Whitman from The 6 Figure Bookkeeper, this episode goes behind the scenes with one of the most recognisable faces in the UK accounting tech space. You'll hear how early work experience, a love of technology and a focus on saving clients time led Chris to build a Business Intelligence department inside his firm, win Technology Champion of the Year, and ultimately move from practice into a senior role at Sage. Along the way he shares the mindset shifts that helped him speak at events, work with banks, and present to rooms full of peers – even when it felt nerve-wracking. You'll learn why visibility is not about showing off, but about being useful and relatable; how awards, case studies and collaboration with software partners can quietly raise your profile; and why the firms that grow fastest are usually the ones willing to share what they're doing well. Chris talks about saying yes (and sometimes no) to events, how he protects his time, and how he balances a busy internal role at Sage with being present at conferences, webinars and community meetups. For bookkeepers, he explains why your proximity to the numbers gives you huge commercial insight, why bookkeeping can feel lonely and how to build a supportive network with accountants and peers. He describes the “golden triangle” between the business owner, the accountant and the bookkeeper, and why collaboration – rather than competition – is where the real opportunity lies as MTD and digitisation reshape the profession. This is essential viewing for bookkeepers who want to stop being “brilliant but invisible”, share their expertise with confidence, and build a long-term career that can grow in whatever direction they choose. ----------------------------------------------- About us We're Jo and Zoe and we help bookkeepers find clients, make more money and build profitable businesses they love. In this episode of "Movie Torture," Jacob, Brad, and MTD dive into the chaotic world of "The Toxic Avenger." The trio humorously dissects the film's bizarre plot, where an average guy, Winston Goose, transforms into a superhero after falling into toxic sludge. With a mix of superhero strength and a questionable aroma, he takes on villains who seem to have escaped from a Halloween store. The hosts banter about the film's absurdity, from its questionable budget to its peculiar characters, including Peter Dinklage's brief appearance. They wrap up with a light-hearted discussion on the film's reception and their own comedic takes on the movie's flaws.Follow Movie Torture here:https://www.instagram.com/movietorturepod/Buy Merch here:https://www.bonfire.com/store/the-hopecast-network-swag/This show is brought to you by The Hopecast Networkhttps://www.instagram.com/hopecastnetwork/
What does the future really look like for UK bookkeepers as regulation tightens, MTD expands and professionalism becomes more important than ever? In this episode of the 6FB Sofa Sessions, Ami Copeland, CEO of the Institute of Certified Bookkeepers (ICB), explains exactly what's changing, what standards matter most, and how bookkeepers can protect, grow and future-proof their practices. Ami leads one of the most influential professional bodies in UK bookkeeping and works closely with HMRC, software providers and regulatory partners to shape the modern bookkeeping profession. In this conversation with Jo Wood and Zoe Whitman, she shares what she is seeing across thousands of UK practices, how professionalism and compliance expectations are rising, and why strong ethical standards will define the next decade of bookkeeping. You'll hear how Making Tax Digital is reshaping the role of the bookkeeper, what regulation really means for day-to-day practice, and how bookkeepers can position themselves as trusted finance partners rather than “just” compliance providers. Ami also talks openly about confidence, competence, qualifications, and why credibility will become a key differentiator as the industry continues to grow. This episode explores the commercial benefits of being professionally recognised, how education and CPD protect both you and your clients, and why bookkeepers who embrace change now will be the ones leading the profession in the years ahead. Ami explains the balance between accessibility and accountability in bookkeeping, and what standards clients will increasingly expect as business owners become more financially aware. If you are a UK bookkeeper navigating MTD, thinking about regulation, wanting to raise your professional profile, or unsure how formal recognition fits into your growth plans, this episode will give you clarity, reassurance and direction. Mike Jones, president and master trainer at Discover Leadership Training, and Chris Messer, executive vice president of the transportation group at Endeavor Business Media, MTD's parent company, are back for another special podcast episode. This time, they are joined by Randy O'Connor, owner and principal of D2D Development Group and a monthly MTD columnist, to discuss the importance of focusing on outcomes in business.
This week on our special Christmas episode Jacob and Brad let us know that MTD is not on the show this weeks, which leads to Brad wondering what life is going to be like when MTD is gone for good. They wonder if "Only 10's" should be on his tombstone and then Brad insists that Jacob get some of his ashes and then they come up with an MTD bobblehead with his ashes. Snooze Buttons returns as a sponsor this week and it is quite the doozy. The guys wonder why Mel Gibson didn't go full Santa in this movie, how did the budget get so big for this movie. Were Mel Gibsons demands to be in this move made that he didn't want to look like Santa? Brad asks Jacob if he could be his lead Elf if Jacob became Santa and then Brad creates a name for MTD, Elf Daddy. You don't want to miss this bonkers episode.Follow Movie Torture here:https://www.instagram.com/movietorturepod/Buy Merch here:https://www.bonfire.com/store/the-hopecast-network-swag/This show is brought to you by The Hopecast Networkhttps://www.instagram.com/hopecastnetwork/
Join Brad, Jacob, and MTD as they dive headfirst into the cinematic disaster that is "The Running Man" on this week's episode of "Movie Torture." In a world where 1987's vision of 2017 includes more shoulder pads than a football game and technology that makes a typewriter look advanced, Arnold Schwarzenegger stars as Ben Richards, a man who just can't catch a break. Wrongly accused and thrown into a game show where the contestants are hunted by villains with more personality than the script, Ben must navigate a dystopian nightmare filled with chainsaw-wielding maniacs and a singing electrician who thinks he's the next big thing. As always, our hosts bring their signature sarcasm and wit, questioning everything from the logic of the plot to the questionable fashion choices. Why does Arnold's beard look like it was glued on by a blindfolded makeup artist? And how did a movie with such a ridiculous premise become a cult classic? Tune in for a hilarious breakdown of a film that proves sometimes the real torture is just pressing play.Follow Movie Torture here:https://www.instagram.com/movietorturepod/Buy Merch here:https://www.bonfire.com/store/the-hopecast-network-swag/This show is brought to you by The Hopecast Networkhttps://www.instagram.com/hopecastnetwork/
In this episode of "Movie Torture," Brad, Jacob and MTD dive into the chaotic world of "Strangers Chapter 2," but not without a few laughs along the way. The trio finds themselves laughing so hard when Jacob suggests that he, Brad, and MTD are like the "three bears" standing outside the house. The conversation spirals into a comedic tangent, with Brad imagining them as bears in leather, while Jacob clarifies he meant the actual animals. The banter continues as they joke about being the "three bears" in a horror movie scenario, complete with Goldilocks references and a lot of laughter. It's a wild ride of humor and horror as they navigate through the movie's plot holes and their own comedic imaginations.
In this hilarious episode of "Movie Torture," Brad, Jacob, Hannah, and MTD are joined by Jessica and Sher from Brad's favorite podcast "Love on the Pod" to dissect the cinematic masterpiece (or disaster) that is "Christmas Vacation 2: Cousin Eddie's Island Adventure." The gang dives into the absurdity of the film, while Brad pitches his wild Hallmark movie idea, "Christmas Town Sniper," much to the amusement and horror of the guests. Meanwhile, Jessica and Sher share their Hallmark expertise, and the group debates the merits of liver mush and the concept of "half loaf love." It's a rollercoaster of laughs, questionable movie pitches, and a deep dive into the world of bad holiday films.Follow Love on the Pod here:https://www.instagram.com/loveonthepod/Follow Movie Torture here:https://www.instagram.com/movietorturepod/Buy Merch here:https://www.bonfire.com/store/the-hopecast-network-swag/This show is brought to you by The Hopecast Networkhttps://www.instagram.com/hopecastnetwork/
