The case of Ivan Milat, also known as the Backpacker Murderer, remains one of Australia's most notorious serial killings. Between 1989 and 1992, Milat lured at least seven young backpackers into the remote Belanglo State Forest, where they were brutally tortured and murdered. The brutal events even inspired a cult classic horror film known as Wolf Creek. Retired FBI agent and criminal profiler Candice DeLong digs into the case of Matthew Milat. Hicrî yeni yıl başladı. 1446 sene geçmiş Peygamber Efendimiz'in (sav) Mekke'den Medine'ye hicretinin üzerinden.

Between September 1992 and November 1993 the remains of seven backpackers were found dotted around Australia's Belanglo State Forest. The long-putrefied bodies had all been shot multiple times by the same .22 calibre rifle. Some had snapped spines; others had been used as target practice. Despite all signs pointing to the Milat family, the real challenge for police was finding which of the ten Milat brothers to point the finger at...See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

In November 1993, a man named Paul Onions called a tip in to the Australian task force working to find a serial killer in New South Wales. 6 months later, Ivan Milat would be arrested, and when police raided his home, what they found in the walls and ceiling implicated him in the 7 backpack murders.

Ivan Milat, is often referred to, as Australia's worst serial killer, or the backpack killer. Ivan was one of 14 children in his family, 10 boys and 4 girls. The authorities would refer to the Milat boys as ‘feral'. This guy is one of the worst, a dark cloud over a beautiful country. I have to apologize to any Australian listeners. I do attempt to do the accent, and, things got carried away. I will do better next time

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, a spate of young backpackers began going missing in the Australian outback. Their families' pleas for help fell on deaf ears until the gruesome discovery of their remains was found deep within the Belanglo Forest. The crimes are pinned on serial killer Ivan Milat in 1996 but he never confessed to any of the murders despite irrefutable evidence. So, tonight I'm actually covering a case that was recommended to me by a listener. You guys know the last story I covered was Ivan Milat, the backpack murderer from Australia. We kind of talked a bit about the inner workings of the Milat family, but apparently it goes even deeper. So tonight we are talking about Matthew Milat, who is Ivan's nephew. Matthew idolized his killer uncle, and went on to commit murder in the very same Belanglo state forest that Ivan prowled. It's so scary, it sounds like it could be a movie, but this all really happened. Between September 1992 and November 1993 the remains of seven backpackers were found dotted around Australia’s Belanglo State Forest. The long putrefied bodies had all been shot multiple times by the same .22 calibre rifle, some had snapped spines, others had been used as target practice. Despite all signs pointing to the Milat family, the real challenge for police was finding which of the ten Milat brothers to point the finger at...1 week of FREE shipping on all merch kicks off Fri 23 April! redhandedshop.com BOOK! Each year about 35000 people are reported missing in Australia. That’s one person every 15 minutes. More then 95% are located within a week. But some like the cases we discussed the next two episodes. They remain missing for decades. 14 women vanished in the Hunter region of New South Wales in the late 1970s and 1980s. Several of these women were believed to have been murdered by Ivan Milat, the Backpacker Killer. He is still considered a prime suspect in many of the cases we will discuss the next two episodes because they fit his MO and he worked in the area at the time. We may never know since Milat died in 2019 taking his secrets with him to his grave.7 Elaine Johnson and Kerry Joel6 Barbara Gibson5 Annette Biffa4 Marcus Allcorn3 Deborah Balken and Gillian Jamieson2 Linda Davie1 Marion SandfordWebsite coming soonFacebook /mysteriouslylistedTwitter @mysteriouslistMusic by Myuu See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
This week is part 2 of a look into the Backpacker Murders and the man behind the crimes. Ivan Milat was convicted of murdering seven people, but some suspect there could be more. For years, he escaped detection for the backpacker killings but a raid would turn up damning evidence linking him to the crimes. Despite all this Milat denied any involvement. On February 9th, 2016, two young, female backpackers traveling across Australia fought for their lives in a real-life Wolf Creek. Nephew of Backpacker Murderer, Ivan Milat, Matthew’s crimes were also brutal and disgusting. On November 20, 2010, Matthew lured David Auchterlonie to the Belanglo State Forest on his 17th birthday with the promise of beers and weed. There, with the help of friend Cohen Klein, they tortured, tormented and murdered David with a double-sided battle axe in the same forest where his Uncle murdered seven backpackers nearly 20 years earlier. This episode was recorded on the 10th Anniversary of the evening when Matthew murdered David Auchterlonie.TCNT: Keely Johnston tells out about the true documentary, Ted Bundy: Falling for a Killer which is showing on Amazon Prime.Aussie As: Another naked bloody legend chases down a would-be robber. For our sources, see our website www.bloodymurderpodcast.com.Become a Bloody Murder Patron (for as little as $1 per month, which you can cancel at anytime) and have access to dozens of Patron only episodes (including our whole first season and AD FREE episodes released early!) with new patron only content added every month!Go to https://www.patreon.com/bloodymurderLevels $5 and over go into our monthly merchandise draws and get Stickers and hand-made Barney Badges!See our website! bloodymurderpodcast.com for all our social media links, contact details, a gallery, fabulous merchandise.True Crime Nerd Time, a segment on Bloody Murder, needs your help because it stars you! In the early 90's two bodies were found in the Belanglo State forest in Australia. The two victims were British backpackers who had been missing since the following year. The cops work on putting together a case but with barely any leads progress on the case was slow until further victims were later discovered. Tips come flying in from all areas in regards to who people believe is committing these murders but a living victim helps lead cops to their man!So let's cuddle up and talk about the Backpack murderer! In the early 90's, young people flocked to Australia to be a part of the adventurous backpacking scene. It was a safe way to have a great time while experiencing something you likely never had. It was also safe and encouraged, until someone started brutally murdering young people in the Belango State Forest. https://www.patreon.com/thetmpodcast

Located south 2 hours south west of the NSW capital of Sydney, is an area of known as the Southern Highlands. If you travel 3 kms west from the Hume Highway that runs through this region you will soon end up in the towering trees of the Belanglo State Forest. The title of the forest ‘Belanglo’, has become synonymous with the callous serial killings of several young backpackers who died at the hands of Ivan Milat. From 1989 to 1993 this tranquil forest would become a dumping ground for Milat. Over a series of searches authorities would discover the remains of 7 individuals who had fallen victim to Milat while hitchhiking through the region. Despite this gruesome history and the negative association with its name, Belanglo forest has still continued to be used as a popular recreational destination for trail bike riders, 4 wheel drive enthusiasts, and campers. But despite locals and tourists alike trying to shake the memory of Milat, In 2010 a disturbing event would bring the names Belanglo and Milat to the media spotlight once again. **Sponsor:** ShipStation https://www.shipstation.com/ **Codeword:** FTC **Podcast Suggestion:** Human/Ordinary http://humanordinary.com/
Two bodies lay thousands of kilometers apart – one, a two-year-old girl in a suitcase on the side of the highway in South Australia, the other, a twenty-year-old woman left lying next to a log in the Belanglo State Forest. No one was looking for them. No one even knew they were missing. When the body of the little girl was finally discovered, seven years after she was killed, police knew she must have a mother somewhere out there. They looked to the body found in Belanglo, and found the little girl’s mother. Karlie Pearce-Stevenson and Khandalyce Pearce had their names back, and now the police just had to discover who killed them – and who had spend the previous five years stealing thousands of dollars from Karlie’s bank account, and using her phone to pretend to her family that she was still alive. Please be warned that this episode contains descriptions of violence against children. When a body was found in the Belanglo State Forest on August 29, 2010, speculation was rife that the Backpacker Murderer Ivan Milat had more victims. Milat was ruled out, however, and the body of the young woman would lie in the morgue, unidentified, nicknamed the Belanglo Angel.Years later, the body of a child was found, over a thousand kilometers away in Wynarka, Western Australia. This poor little girl would also remain unidentified, until a tip from Crime Stoppers gave her her name back. She was Khandalyce Pearce, and police would uncover that she was the daughter of the Belanglo Angel, Karlie Pearce-Stevenson.Police were determined to bring to justice whatever lowlife had left a mother and a daughter to rot in the woods alone, a thousand miles apart from each other. They found Karlie’s ex-boyfriend, a man named Daniel James Holdom, who had stolen up to $100,000 of Karlie’s welfare benefits over a period of around five years, who also just happened to be a convicted child molester. This case is still ongoing, so please watch out for a future update. There is no book written about this case yet, so your best way of getting information is to read the archives of your favourite Australian newspaper. The murders of the seven backpackers had dominated headlines for years. The police, psychologists, scientists, and the international media were trying to work out exactly what went down in the Belangalo State Forest. The few leads the police had all seemed to point in one direction – towards a roadworker from Sydney with a passion for guns.In this episode, your girls dive into the background of Ivan Milat and how he became the Backpacker Murderer, Jess's continued love for Paul Onions, and the unfortunate Milat family legacy. We also dive into perhaps the most burning topic related to the case – did Milat work alone? We don’t know for sure, but that’s not gonna stop us from wildly speculating!Ivan Milat was born in New South Wales in 1944. The fifth child in a line of fourteen, he had a rough childhood, hanging out with his literal gang of brothers, causing trouble as a teen, and spending plenty of time in prison as an adult. Everyone who knew Ivan knew him to be a good guy, quick tempered, sure, and a bit of a fan of a firearm, but wouldn’t hurt a fly. Richard was the wildcard Milat, the one you needed to watch out for. But the evidence against Ivan was starting to pile up, piece by piece, until one day it all came crashing down. While we know for sure that Ivan Milat was responsible for the Backpacker Murders, there are still many lingering questions about the case. Firstly, did Ivan work alone? The police, forensic psychologists, and the usual collection of armchair detectives on the internet think it is very possible he had an accomplice. And were the bodies in Belangalo State Forest Ivan’s only victims? With so many missing people in Australia and with a guy as batshit as Milat, it’s hard to think he stopped at seven. Our main source this week was again the excellent Sins of the Brother. Please read it.You can find more information than you can poke a stick at online about this case but here’s some links to get you started.Firstly, read a slightly dry but very detailed sum up of the case in one of Ivan Milat’s appeal documents here http://www.austlii.edu.au/cgi-bin/viewdoc/au/cases/nsw/NSWSC/1998/795.html?context=1;query=ivan%20milat;mask_path=A very detailed exploration into the case with a convenient timeline and some Web 1.0 goodness can be found herehttp://www.geocities.ws/darragh_scully/ivan_millat.htmlRead about the trial and some info on R vs Milat: A Case Study in Cross Examination herehttps://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/news/nsw/the-prosecutors-question-that-was-the-beginning-of-the-end-for-serial-killer-ivan-milat/news-story/0cdc7bf3ae93319ab26d14bc732cc34bTo read one of the lead detectives and forensic psychologists in conversation about the case, go herehttp://medicolegal.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/The-belanglo-enigma.pdfFind us on FACEBOOK, TWITTER, INSTAGRAM or EMAIL us on murderinthelandofoz@gmail.com

The Backpacker Killer. November, 1993. New South Wales, Australia. Three more bodies are recovered from the NSW Belanglo State Forest, bringing the count to seven. Now the police had to admit that a serial killer was abducting and murdering backpackers. The killer was dubbed The Backpacker Killer. His modus operandi was to take his victims to the forest where he disabled them by severing their spinal cords then murdered them in various ways. Because of this, police considered that there may have been more than one person involved. But a man named Paul Onions would contact authorities to tell them of his abduction story. This would focus the investigation on a single person Onions identified in a video lineup; Ivan Milat. Ivan owned many firearms, was very strong, and came from a large, tight-knit family. A raid on the Milat properties in 1994 would produce 100s of items of evidence and yet he denied any involvement.
