Deer season is officially here, and Chasing Giants is back with plenty to talk about. Terry kicks off Episode 341 with an update from his first hunts of the 2026 Kentucky season, including a fascinating Western Kentucky property where years of habitat improvement, food plots, bedding cover and disciplined buck management are beginning to show major results. Don and Terry discuss why buck management can have such a dramatic impact on a property—not because hunters are “changing genetics,” but because they can influence which bucks are allowed to reach older age classes. They also talk about last-minute food plot work, overseeding standing corn and soybeans, hairy vetch, cereal grains, miscanthus screens and preparing properties for the heart of deer season. Then the conversation takes a turn. Don is going old school. His grandson Walker has developed an interest in trapping, and Don is pulling out knowledge and equipment from a part of his outdoor life that predates his obsession with giant whitetails. Their goal includes catching 50 raccoons and eventually pursuing the different Illinois furbearers together. From there, Terry brings up a fascinating debate happening in another outdoor industry: forward-facing sonar in fishing. It raises a much bigger question: What happens when technology becomes so effective that the younger generation experiences hunting and fishing completely differently than the generation before them? Trail cameras. Cell cameras. Drones. Forward-facing sonar. Where is the line between using technology and losing the skills that originally defined the outdoors? Don gives his perspective on the generational divide and why passing along woodsmanship, character, integrity and faith may be more important than ever. In March 2002, John Darwin paddled his canoe into the North Sea off Seaton Carew and disappeared. Searchers found wreckage, his family mourned, and his wife Anne claimed more than £500,000 in insurance and related payments. But Darwin had not drowned: he was alive, hiding in a bedsit next door to the family home while his two sons believed their father was dead.Five years later, he walked into a London police station claiming he had amnesia. The story collapsed when investigators found a photograph of John and Anne together in Panama, taken while they were planning a new life abroad.In 2008, both were convicted of fraud. John received six years and three months in prison, Anne six and a half years, after a deception that did not just target insurers, but shattered their own family.

Welcome back to another episode of Fratello On Air! We've been away for a couple of weeks, but we're now back (sort of) and have taken the time to record. This week, we're talking about the watches that got away. Yes, this is a sad episode, but not really. The fact is that both of us have been very lucky while collecting, but that doesn't mean that there weren't moments of heartbreak and regret. Enjoy the show!Since we last spoke, Mike has been in Brazil, back in America, and on a long weekend in Surrey to celebrate an anniversary. Meanwhile, Balazs has been in Hungary and Chicago before returning to the Fatherland. Yes, we've been keeping the road hot, but we've also been keeping our eyes peeled for watches.HandgelenkskontrolleWe kick off our show with some travel talk. Mike fared well at Heathrow while Balazs enjoyed the typical antics at Frankfurt airport. We also discussed how America seems to have its passport control process in line now. Regarding shows and movies, we mentioned Crime 101, We Own This Town, Reacher, The Handmaid's Tale, and Lioness. Regarding the Handgelenkskontrolle, Mike wore his Patek Philippe Calatrava 570 all weekend for the anniversary. Sadly, it needs a service after stopping in certain positions overnight. Balazs is sporting a more robust choice: his Rolex Submariner 5513.The watches that got awayRegrets, we have a few. But, as mentioned, we've been extremely fortunate during our collecting journeys. We've found amazing watches along the way, but the misses always surface. Today, we each mention a few of the pieces that we didn't buy or sold and wished we'd kept. Mike kicks it off with a very rare Citizen. The Jet Para Water Professional reference JT1307051 is a unicorn among rare JDM pieces. Roughly six years ago, Mike was locked in a Yahoo! Japan battle for hours before backing down at roughly €4,500. Yes, that's a lot for a watch no one knows, but the fight was addictive. Sadly, it went on too long, and the price reached an uncomfortable level. Since then, maybe one other has come up for sale.Balazs recalls 2010, when he was first out of university. At that time, he came across a reverse panda Rolex Daytona 6265 for $18,000, and it was sadly all the money in the world for him. Now, life begins at $50,000 for a similar example. Mike also dredges up a story about a vintage chronograph. A 60s reverse panda Movado M95 with terrible pictures was listed on eBay with a $0.99 starting price. He sought help from none other than Fred Mandelbaum, who told him to tread carefully. In the end, he lost it for roughly $2,100. Today, these watches sell for much more.The Heuer 2446 makes Balazs' list of regrets. He was in a small group in the early 2010's with a weekly Excel file of watches for sale. The so-called Jochen Rindt was available for €4,500, but he wasn't educated enough about the watch to make a decision. Today, expect to pay roughly €15,000 for the racing-inspired timer. Mike brought up a Rolex Day-Date 1803 in white gold with a chalky blue dial. In the podcast, he incorrectly remembers it as a Buckley dial, but in fact, it was a normal piece with baton indices. Still, the watch was stunning, and it was gone within 12 hours. It was available for too short a period for him to sleep on the decision. Alas!Finally, Balazs mentions a watch he once owned but sold, which he wishes he had back in his collection. The Nivada Grenchen Datomaster is a rare beast with a stunning color combination. At one time, Mike, Balazs, and Chase (from Oak & Oscar) all owned one and shared a picture in Basel with the three pieces together. The stories of how they came to be in those collections often involve laws being broken, unethical behaviour, and extreme violence.” — Matthew Campbell Imagine a gay Jeffrey Epstein who set up shop in Thailand. Only rather than peddling young girls, he traded in bodybuilders and priceless antiquities. That's the story of the British émigré Douglas Latchford, the subject of Matthew Campbell's new book The Man Who Stole the Gods. It's the true story of a man who was born in the last days of the British Raj, made his fortune in Bangkok, became the world's leading dealer of Khmer antiquities, and was indicted for criminal conspiracy in 2019. Campbell's tale is simultaneously a crime story, a history of Cambodia, and a parable about the relationship between Western wealth and the world's cultural heritage. The Khmer Empire, which dominated Southeast Asia from the ninth to the fifteenth centuries, produced one of the finest civilisations of the medieval world. Angkor in the twelfth century had 750,000 people — making it ten times the size of London. After the genocidal Khmer Rouge regime, every Khmer site in Cambodia was systematically looted. The pieces went to the Metropolitan Museum, to Christie's, to private American collectors. Latchford was the central conduit. The Jeffrey Epstein enabler. Like Epstein, Latchford got away with it for years. Unlike Epstein, he died a free man, even chalking up a 2020 New York Times obituary as a Khmer antiquities expert. Five Takeaways •       Douglas Latchford: The British Jeffrey Epstein of Asian Art: Born in the last days of the British Raj, educated in the UK, Latchford made his fortune in Bangkok and became the world's leading dealer of Southeast Asian antiquities — selling pieces for millions of dollars to the Metropolitan Museum, Christie's, and wealthy American collectors. He presented himself as an expert and connoisseur. He gave to universities and lent to exhibitions. He received a glowing obituary in the New York Times in August 2020. The dark side: he was, Campbell shows, the central organiser of a decades-long criminal conspiracy to loot Cambodia's cultural heritage. He was indicted in 2019 but died before he could be extradited. •       The Khmer Empire: 750,000 People When London Had 40,000: The Khmer Empire dominated Southeast Asia from the ninth to the fifteenth centuries, ruling directly or indirectly over what is now Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, and parts of Malaysia. Its capital, Angkor, had 750,000 people in the twelfth century — when London had 40,000 at the absolute outside. The Khmer built extraordinary temple cities — Angkor Wat is only the most famous — and produced remarkable stone and bronze sculpture. Every single Khmer site in Cambodia was systematically looted. The pieces all went somewhere. A great many came to the West. •       The Vietnam War, Nixon, Kissinger, and the Conditions for Genocide: The Vietnam War is central to Campbell's story. The Ho Chi Minh Trail ran partly through Cambodia, making Cambodia of great interest to Nixon and Kissinger. Beginning in 1968, large-scale American bombing of Cambodia — ostensibly aimed at destroying a supposed communist headquarters that, Campbell notes, never actually existed — helped destabilise the country and created the conditions in which the Khmer Rouge could emerge. The Khmer Rouge ideology: Pol Pot believed civilisation needed not to be reformed but erased. A blank slate. Rebuild from zero. •       The Museum World's Complicity: The Sackler Parallel: The Metropolitan Museum of Art features prominently in Campbell's account. Objects in museums have to come from somewhere — the works in the Met did not originate in New York. How they came to be in those collections often involved laws being broken, unethical behaviour, and extreme violence. Campbell draws a parallel with Patrick Radden Keefe's account of the Sacklers: the more investigative journalists look at the wealthy donors and private collectors associated with major cultural institutions, the more troubling the stories that emerge. The museum world has a serious provenance problem. •       The Happy Ending: Repatriation and the National Museum in Phnom Penh: Latchford was indicted in 2019 for criminal conspiracy. He died in 2020, in a monastery in Northern Thailand, before he could be extradited. He never went to trial. But the recovery effort — a remarkable collaboration between Cambodia and the US Department of Justice — tracked down hundreds of stolen objects through meticulous detective work. The pieces have been returned to Cambodia. The National Museum in Phnom Penh now has so many repatriated objects that it is running out of room and may need to build a new wing. The Minnesota Wild's Stanley Cup Playoff run has ended in disappointing fashion. After an unbelievable start to game 5, the Colorado Avalanche simply were the better team, and took nearly every opportunity they saw to expose the Minnesota Wild's mistakes. With that said, the Minnesota Wild had a goal disallowed, they hit the cross bar, and there were times that the small things just set them back enough for Colorado to creep in and steal it at the end. This one in going to sting for the Minnesota fanbase, but there were also alot of positives that came out of the series, and the season as a whole. Ryan Carter kicks off the show joined by Kevin Gorg, and is later joined by John King and Joe O'Donnell for a full recap of game 5 in Denver.
